Unemployed Single Mother with 5 Kids Gets Makeover and Job Opportunity in Unforgettable Christmas Surprise

An organization called “Style Me Hired” is presenting a new twist on the classic “makeover” story.  In rough economic times, many women don’t just need a new hairstyle or bronzer– they need an entire lifestyle change.

That’s why Style Me Hired tackles both, giving struggling women a free makeover, and then presenting them with a unique job opportunity.

The most recent recipient was single mother of five Nanette Garvey, who was surprised at her Pennsylvania home by Marc Voci, the owner Marc Voci Salon in Folsom.

Garvey seemed unable to control her excitement, waving and smiling at the cameras as she left.

“I’ve never had anything like this happen to me” she said, emerging in black pants, tennis shoes, and a blue shirt.

Having recently lost her job, Garvey said she’s been having trouble managing her finances and providing all she can for her children.

She explained:

“I have to be really strong for them, and it’s not easy all the time, so something like this– and for them to actually experience that too…it can do a lot for a person.  Especially a woman!”

MyFoxPhilly has more:

She was whisked away to the salon where stylists gave her a new hairdo and clothing from Clothes Mentor in West Chester. Voci has been doing these monthly makeovers for the past two years. He says it’s about “Local businesses teaming up, same mindset, to help these women and men in this economy and try to bring some joy to this world.”

Just last month Voci surprised a woman whose home was damaged in Hurricane Sandy.  ”Not only did we give her a makeover, we had her house fixed for free” said Voci.

Garvey won the makeover by filling out a card at the salon. “I thought, let me try, it could be something that could give me a new lease, you know, a new beginning for me and my kids” she said.

When the salon component of the makeover was complete, a man dressed as Santa came in and provided the most meaningful gift: a full-time job opportunity with Educational Data Systems Incorporated (EDSI), a consulting services company.

“Amazing.  I never really thought anything like this would happen,” she said, practically speechless.  “Not at all, not at all.  I’m overwhelmed at this point.”

From there, “Santa” took Garvey on a fire truck, where they drove to deliver presents to her children.

NBC 10 concludes:

“It’s hard but I have a lot of family and friends that support me and are there for me no matter what. I teach my kids that you will always family and friends. Someone will always be there for you,” said Garvey.

While it’s not a guarantee that Nanette will get the job, it’s a major opportunity for the Folsom native and one that we’re confident she’ll take full advantage of. Most importantly, it’s a Holiday memory that Nanette and her family will never forget.

Salon owner Marc Voci simply said: “The holiday spirit is alive and well in Delaware County.”

It is good to hear of giving to someone in need yet what I saw this Christmas was less Christ and more selfishness…we must fight as a people to keep the Spirit of Christ alive in this nation or we will go the way of the rest of the world and that is into great darkness.

This story may warm the heart of many here.. But I have to say I’m tired of hearing about the plight of Single Mothers over the past 40 years here in America.. We have a big big problem in that area and it’s not the men, it’s the woman themselves..

Great story. I would like to hear a heart warming story about veterans not losing their houses because they are still fighting a war or about their families struggling to get by while their loved ones are overseas. Our beloved veterans are spending today struggling to keep alive with Obama’s rules of engagement. They can’t fight this war fairly because their hands are tide by the cowardly politicians. Some of these are reservist on their 3rd of 4th tour. Where is their story?

In a related story…. the tenth most popular request for kids this year is….. a NEW DAD!!!

It’s a shame that what’s really needed in our world these days are Extreme Makovers of the INTERIORS of people where kids are concerned…. Having to be “strong for your kids” has always involved a hell of a lot more than trying to prove you can single handedly bring home the bacon and then fry it up in a pan…

Here’s to the family units that have been completely decimated by forty years of feminism…..

“Moms might be mandatory….. but Dad’s make the difference”……..

    Merry Christmas…..

I find it quite fascinating to read some of the comments here.

Here we have a heart warming story, on Christmas eve no less, and some are fixated on this beautiful womans weight, appearance and situation. No matter that the story said she RECENTLY lost her JOB, some here assume she must be of ill repute and a welfare cheat. Outrageous!!

No wonder our country is doomed and set for judgement. No one can see there own faults because they’re too busy judging others.

I wish this lovely woman a Merry Christmas. Oh yeah, the rest of you also. ;-)

    This-Does-Not-Fit-The-Narrative.

If Winston Smith was working tonight all the private sector stuff in the story would be removed.

The new headline would be “Dear Leader, as He’s known to do, Blesses one of His Subjects with a Holiday Gift”.

Notice how most people give her the benefit of the doubt and just assume some unfortunate events happened in her life to be single with 6 kids. Compare that to the black mother of 6 and it would be a free for all with racial jokes and generalizations.

I am so discouraged sometimes by the catty remarks made by some of the posters here. Is it not possible to just say ‘Well good for her.” All the nasty remarks are just so unnecessary. I fully expect this stuff from liberals, but not from the average poster on this site. Who’s business is it what her marital situation is. Whether she’s divorced, widowed or whatever. That’s really not the point of the story. Overweight? Really? Good grief! She may have a few extra pounds, but look around, my friend. Virtually ALL average women have a few extra pounds. She looks great, she has been gifted with a great opportunity, and I, for one, wish her nothing but the best.

@AmericanStrega: Nope, no sore spot here, just felt that some of those things are none of your buisness? You don’t know anything about this woman whatsoever and yet you have set yourself as judge and jury over the choices she makes in life. Maybe she was an abused woman who got away from the man in her life (husband, whatever) and is simply trying to do the best she can. She IS looking for work… You have a right to your opinions, I don’t dispute that. She also has a right to have children, and whatever else she chooses to do with her life.
We may not LIKE the choices others make, but they still have a right (at least for now) to make those choices, good, bad or ugly. *shrug* …just sayin…

My first thought was are all of her children from the same man? Was she married to this man and if so why did he leave and why isn’t he paying support? If he isn’t paying support he should be in jail? And, is she using some form of birth control so she doesn’t have more children she cannot support until she is able to provide a self-sustaining life for herself and her children?

Saturday; No, I’m not kidding with these questions. I think if a woman who has multiple children and cannot afford them should really think about how she (without the support of a spouse) is going to provide for them and should make sure she doesn’t bring anymore children into the world that she cannot support. I think my questions are valid. How did they offend you? Hit a sore spot?

She’s not going to take the job. Maybe it’s just in Nebraska, but a “single mother” – especially with six kids – makes more income from the Government by staying home and doing “what ever she” wants to do all day. The “single mothers” will spout all day long how “it’s so hard to work and take care of the kids”. Horribly it’s true (at least in Nebraska). No chick with kids would give up the wad of cash, SSI, Medicaid, and Food Stamps, in order to have to get up and work a $9.50 per hour job. Even the social workers would “instruct” not to do it, AND THEY DO “INSTRUCT”.

Women who stay at home with 5 kids do whatever they want all day???

I do agree with you financially it is better for her to tAke the handouts. We need to switch it and garnish dad’s pay, not the taxpayer’s. there would be a lot less so gle women with babies if men were held accountable financially for their kids.

They don’t after the other parent for child support because less people would need the government. My ex-wife has not made a payment in over 2 years and is over 20k behind yet nothing happens. I’m down to 570 a month income and i REFUSE to take any hand out. Help the elderly/sick/young who can’t help themselves. It warms the heart to see things like this in the news for a change. God shuts doors in our life, and opens others that usally have a blessing and something better. It depends on how you look at it. Being spiritual minded vs humanly minded there is always blessings if you look close. I pray God bless this woman and her family, especially the younger ones who face a world and battles we did not have to face at that age.
