The largest mosque in Australia posted a Facebook “fatwa” against Christmas — warning followers that it’s a “sin” even to wish people a Merry Christmas — before taking it down, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The ruling, posted Saturday by the Lakemba Mosque in Sydney, said the “disbelievers are trying to draw Muslims away from the straight path” and that “a Muslim is neither allowed to celebrate the Christmas Day nor is he allowed to congratulate [Christians].” It went up following a sermon from the mosque’s head imam against participating in any Christmas-related activities.

On wishing people a Merry Christmas, the fatwa stated that a “Muslim who says this does not become a disbeliever himself, he at least commits a sin as this is the same as congratulating him for his belief in the trinity, which is a greater sin and much more disliked by Almighty Allaah than congratulating him for drinking alcohol or killing a soul or committing fornication or adultery.”
The president of the Lebanese Muslim Association, which oversees the mosque, told the Herald that the message had been posted by a young worker who copied the text from another Islamic website. The fatwa did not represent the views of the mosque’s imam and was taken down, Samier Dandan said.
Before it was removed, the fatwa drew condemnation from other Muslim leaders: The Grand Mufti of Australia, Ibrahim Abu Mohammad, said Islam believes in peace and respect for others and that the view was not shared by the majority of Australia’s Muslims.
“There is difference between showing respect for someone’s belief and sharing those beliefs,” he told the Herald. “We are required to have good relations with all people, and to congratulate them on their joyous events is very important.”

Dec. 27, 2012 at 5:59pmMaybe if more Europeans had stayed in their own homelands, they wouldn’t have this stuff to worry about. Y’all could always go back to the land of your forefathers and then you wouldn’t have to worry about the fact that you’re about to be a racial minority in places like America and Australia.

Dec. 27, 2012 at 5:54pmIf Europeans had stayed in their homelands, they could have avoided most of the stuff they complain about, too. Go back! I’m sure the Aborigines and Indigenous Americans won’t cry over the departure.

Dec. 27, 2012 at 5:51pmWell, those “Aussies” who don’t believe in multiculturalism could always return to their own ancestral homeland. As long as they are on Australian soil, they have no room to complain about foreigners. If Aborigines have to put up with Europe’s undesirables, then there’s no reason why Muslims should feel bad about being there. If you can’t read the signs to their shops, then feel free to learn a new language. After all, it’s not like Europeans felt obligated to learn the language(s) that were already spoken in Australia. What’s with all of the whining? Nobody is forcing white people and/or Christians to stay in Australia.

Dec. 27, 2012 at 11:18amThis is what Muslims actually think and the fatwa will reappear as soon as they feel they have sufficient numbers to state their feelings without fear.It may take one, two, three years it matters not time means nothing when you live in the 14th century.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 5:55pmSince when do Islamic mosques anywhere permit women and men to worship in the same room? Not even in progressive mosques have I heard of this. Do the research, I see what appears to be 2 women in the middle of the above picture? What’s going on here? Mixed in with the men inside a mosque? Sounds like it was faked.

Notice that there is an absence of prayer rugs and prostrate worshippers mooning their moon-god. Since all appear to be sitting I would suggest that they are simply attending a lecture. Also, the only head covering I see among the listeners is one one man up front wearing a ball cap, with no mandated Islamic head scarfs or long hair seen in the group. Possibly the audience may just be curious “westerners” being propagandized. Note also that the caption below the photo is dated 2010 so this is a file photo rather than a contemporary one relevant to the article.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 6:03amHHHHMMMMMMMMMM you dont suppose that this explains why old barry tries to disappear to Hawaii every Christmas do you?
I guess when your vacationing, body surfing, and golfing at wildly expensive clubs, estates, and private beaches I don’t suppose you have to say “Merry Christmas” to anyone. That would save one from any possible offense towards the muslim religious laws as they are defined.
Now why in the world do you suppose barry might want to try and not offend only that group of foreigners???? HHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMM

Dec. 27, 2012 at 5:56pmTaqoushi, do you know where that principle comes from? You probably don’t. It’s from Christians. Casuistry has existed and been encouraged by Christians since before Islam even came into existence.

Dec. 25, 2012 at 4:44pmIf the Qur’an is Allah’s word, then to acknowledge the celebration of a nonbeleiver’s religion is blasphemy. If Torah is Hashem’s word, then to ackowledge the worship of other gods is blasphemy. If the Gospels of Christianity are the word of G-d then to recognize other paths to God is blasphemy. If man is to be at peace with God, all religion is blasphemy for God is the creator of all things and no part of God’s creation should set itself above any other part

Dec. 26, 2012 at 1:09pmFAIL: Your logic (if you want to call it that) seems to imply that because muslims and other religions have a text containing doctrines and tenets of their faith, which they hold sacred, that the mere existence of such volumes somehow gives them authority to speak for God.
The Qu’ran was written by a goat herder named Mohammad who claimed to have seen the angel Gabriel who instructed him. Only Mohammed knew what he saw and heard; but what is clear is the aftermath– a religion which he largely spread with the sword, and who’s practitioners have largely come to the conclusion that the only way to perpetuate and spread the faith (to conquest of the world) is to follow suit and do it with deceit, blood, violence and intimidation. Also relying on the useful idiots in government and society to make up the difference.
Does this make the Qu’ran the word of God? I think not. Many religions are a perversion of what was once (and still is) good, clear, and easy to understand. Jesus taught it in clarity. Satan and those under his influence perverted and distorted it.
So, in regards to your comments, the element upon which your comments hinge is the word “if”. “If the Qu’ran is the word of God…” I say no. It is not. The same goes for many religions. They interpret scripture to mean what they believe it means, or what they want it to mean. It doesn’t mean they are right, or that they really speak for God
But there are those on the earth who do.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 1:59pm@JOHNPAUL – Of course they could be wrong. Look at the Nazis in WWII or the Communists in Russia. They all thought they were right. All religions are self serving organizations based on a perceived position of favor with “God”. God has no favorites in his creation. If he did then his creation would not be perfect would it.
