When their blind, 8-year-old dog, Abby, went missing in an Alaska snowstorm, the Grapengeter family didn’t expect to ever see her again.
Abby — a short-haired brown-and-white mix — disappeared Dec. 13 during the worst part of recent storms in Fairbanks and her family searched for several days in 40-below-zero temperatures before giving up, according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
Then Sunday, the family got a call from a local musher, who found Abby on his doorstep about 1o miles from her home, according to the AP. With help from Facebook and the local community, the musher, Mark May, had been able to find her family. May, who also happened to be a veterinarian, was surprised to find her unharmed by the week-long ordeal.
“It’s a miracle, there’s no other words to describe it,” Abby’s owner, McKenzie Grapengeter, told the News-Miner. “We never expected to have her to be returned safe and alive. She’s blind. It’s a miracle. It’s amazing.”

Dec. 27, 2012 at 8:23amThis is a wonderful story and I have one just as good. True Story.
I had got off the turnpike in Bedford Pa and was paying my toll and I seen a sign with a missing dog on it. Not only was it missing but it was in a car accident the day before and the car rolled over and when it did the dog flew out and was gone. They had no clue but assumed the dog got killed. On the flyer was a phone number and I new that the number was not a PA number. I went across the street to sheetz and said a prayer. I said Lord, Help me!! Help me find this dog. I then called the lady and was talking to her on the phone and was crying and told her I will go home and get friends and we will look for your dog!! As I made the turn while I was still on the phone I looked down in the valley and there layed her dog!!!!! I told her “your not gonna believe this but I found your dog”!! There it layed with a broken leg. I picked it up with the help of a passerbyer and we returned the dog to its owner(which had stayed at a motel overnight after the wreck. They had planned to stay for a week to see if the dog could be found. Their is a god and he sure helped me/dog/owner/. AMEN.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 5:49pmWhat a heartwarming story, especially at Christmas time. I bet that little dog never gave up hope in finding her family. There is nothing purer than a dog’s heart and spirit. It kind of makes all the rest of the nonsense going on in the world irrelevent. Life’s all about love and hope. Welcome home Abby…..there’s no place like home.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 4:03pmDid you notice the smile on the dog’s face? My dog smiles a lot, too. And to think some people have said that dogs don’t have feelings.I guess they don’t know dogs.

Dec. 26, 2012 at 11:54amWe had a pup scheduled to go to Milwaukee on the 23rd but flights were overbooked due to the recent storm in the Midwest. A family who was going to pick up their pup after getting back from their Christmas trip mentioned they were going to …..Milwaukee on the 23rd!!! They were just 15 miles from the pup’s final destination in Cedarburg. I am going to have to write a book – not the first time the “unseen hand” has made Himself known by these divine appointments.

Dec. 27, 2012 at 8:16amyes, they are your best friend, No matter what you do they will walk beside you, not behind you or infront. I have always wanted to hit the lottery (ofcourse who doesnt) and build a big huge kennell for the homeless animals and adopt out and such. I cant explain the love you have for an animal. True Love. Good Luck!!!

Dec. 26, 2012 at 10:25amSome on here make fun of these heartwarming doggie stories. I think it is a lovely reminder, in a world in absolute turmoil and strife, that there are some things in life that supercede all the ugliness. Dogs are just special sources of love for families. A look at the faces of the children in the photo says it all.
