D.C. Cops Told NBC ‘Meet the Press’ High-Capacity Magazines Were ‘Not Permissible’ Before the Show

NBC’s David Gregory has come under fire in the last couple days for bringing a high-capacity magazine for ammunition storage on Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” which is filmed in Washington, D.C., an area with laws forbidding gun possession within city limits. It has now been revealed that NBC asked local authorities before bringing the firearm component on air if it was allowed, were told no and seem to have brought it on anyway.

(Scroll down for update)

NBC Asked D.C. Police Department to Use Magazine on Meet the Press and Law Enforcement Denied Their Request

Since the show aired with Gregory holding the magazine, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation. Politico reported Wednesday that police had told the network having a magazine on the show within the District was “not permissible.”

“NBC contacted [the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department] inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment,” Gwendolyn Crump, a police spokeswoman, said in an email to Politico. “NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated.”

The local news station WJLA also contacted the D.C. MPD and received a similar response that NBC was denied permission.

Politico wrote that it contacted NBC for comment on this latest development but did not receive a response.

Update: TMZ, citing “well-placed law enforcement sources,” reports that an official with the D.C. police told the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that David Gregory could in fact display a high capacity magazine on “Meet the Press” Sunday.

Well-placed law enforcement sources tell TMZ … a staffer from “Meet the Press” called ATF before the show aired to inquire about the legality of David holding the empty magazine during a segment on gun control.  We’re told the ATF person contacted the D.C. police to find out if the District of Columbia — the place where the show is broadcast — had a law prohibiting such a display.

If he didn’t get it there someone must have gotten it from somewhere. This could point to a conspiracy of sorts. Sort of like the local dope pusher but this would be the local hi-cap mag pusher. Where is the DC PD? This is getting serious…………. What a pathetic joke. There must have been at least 10,000 witnesses ( I figure that’s about the total audience for this loser) to this crime and I’m betting nothing will happen to Gregory. Do you think he is even the least bit concerned. Can you imagine Joe Citizen being yanked from his car and thrown to the pavement, knee in his back, Glocks pulled all around with 10 cops screaming 10 different directions as the hi-cap magazine is/was discovered in Joe’s pistol case? Bad Boy, Bad Boy, Watcha’ Gonna Do???

He’s going on about what looks like a little 20 shot clip. If he looks at a news clip from one of the Muslim countrys he will see everyone walking down the street with a AK-47 and a 60 shot clip. A few will have a 30 shot clip and and they would be laughed at if they had a 10 or 20 shot clip.

Australia implmented a gun ban around 1996 and people have been using the “gun crime” statistics ever since then to mislead people into thinking that crime has significantly lessened since the gun ban was implemented. That’s just not true, gun crimes have necessarily gone down (less guns means less crimes committed with guns) however the crime rates have not gone down. In other words increased gun control in Australia has not reduced the crime in Australia or made it any safer in Australia. Simply google Astralia gun laws and you can find this information. Here is a good link with some solid information http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1736501,00.html

“John Howard — just two months into his eleven-and-a-half years in power — seized the chance to overhaul Australia’s gun laws, trampling all opposition to make them among the strictest in the developed world. “I hate guns,” he said at the time. “One of the things I don’t admire about America is their slavish love of guns … We do not want the American disease imported into Australia.” Howard argued the tougher laws would make Australia safer. But 12 years on, new research suggests the government response to Port Arthur was a waste of public money and has made no difference to the country’s gun-related death rates.

To see how the NRA would react to him violateing a unconstitutional law? Will they defend him or won’t they see how they operate? ALL gun laws are UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!!!!!!!

Married to an Aussie woman for a breif stint, I live in Hawks Nest, NEw Castle. I was surprised by how strong the presence of the state was. There was such a mixing between state and business, I couldn’t help but wonder who got the privileged to sale their items at the post office ? Or is it just the government sales those items there and makes profit on it ? Seemed to me this type of situation set’s up a great deal of favoritism and corruption in the government. Not quite a fair deal. I also didn’t like the hospital’s to much, Reminded me of being in the military. David Gregory is a true American. He knows that if you can’t show a 30 bullet magazine or a 100 bullet magazine, or semiautomatic weapons or automatic weapons like my M4 hunting rifle on TV, the next thing you know the government will ban and confiscate all guns of all kinds including air powered BB guns, as well as knives longer than 2″. They may in fact ban all metallic silverware, and allow Americans to own only sporks. Once that happens, isn’t it clear enough what will happen next?

It is to me. Slavery, total subjugation of the US population, defeat, despair and ultimately death: yours, mine, and your children’s.

If David Gregory can’t legally show a 30 bullet clip on TV, then ultimately, given the inevitable consequences, you and me and our children will all die.

If there is something wrong with my logic, and you are unAmerican enough, and stupid enough, to believe anything to the contrary, then please post your so called “logic” here.

David Gregory stood up to big government, protected you from the slippery slope, prevented you from losing your guns and may have saved your life. And the life of your children, and the future of America.

Dude, your comments just come out so dog gone fake and corney.

It is obvious that you know nothing of firearms, or the lingo.

We do not call it a 30 bullet magazine. the bullet is the lead/copper portion on the end of the cartridge that actually goes down the barrel of the rifle (the projectile if you will). You have the bullet, the brass, powder (like Reloader 15, varget, IMR…), and the primer. When all together, it is either called a round, or a cartridge. So, we call it a 30 round magazine, not a 30 bullet magazine.

As far as your “my M4 for hunting” comment. The AR is a great platform for a hunting rifle. It is modular, lightweight, and without a wood stock, it does great in bad weather conditions. It is also very easy to drop in a match grade trigger, and easy to free float the barrel for better accuracy. Generally, the hunting ARs will use a 5 round magazine (some states limit what size mag you can hunt with). Most of the hunting ARs will have a 20 inch or longer barrel, and many will be in calibers such as .308, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5 Grendel, the .260 Remington. These are generally more suited to taking larger game. Some folks do use the .223 on hogs, deer, and it is very well suited for varmints. I use a Bushmaster .223 as a coyote rifle. It has a fluted match grade barrel. I have also taken a few deer with it, but use the .77 grain Hornady rounds when hunting deer.

The M4 could be used for hunting, but generally is not t

      @sendthemeatballs continued

The M4 generally is not the choice for hunting. It usually has a 16 inch barrel and is more for doing Three Gun competitions, tactical shooting, home protection, police work…..

Because of the shorter barrel, you get less velocity, but more maneuverability.

We all know you are fake as a three dollar bill, but figued I would give you a little help with the lingo, so you do not come across sounding so stupid next time your throw one of your dumb comments out there, trying to sound like you are one of us. We all know you are a troll, playing a game.

also know, that every time you try to throw some BS, me, or someone like me will catch you on it, and expose you for the bone headed lib that you really are.

You are what Col Jeff Cooper used to refer to as a hoplophobe. you have an unnatural fear of ARs. Being black, plastic, and all scary and such, just puts you in a tizzy. Most likely, you could see a pic of a standard Ruger Mini 14 Ranch rifle, with blued barrel and wood stock, and be just fine, but the AR just makes you urinated down your sissified little pants leg. In reality, both will fire the same caliber at the same rate, and both can use those scary mean 30 round magazines.

Keep it real moron, and know that I am keeping an eye on you and your stupid ways

Let’s just gloss over the fact that all the laws in DC regulating guns are unconstitutional, hardly worth mentioning. Why do we continually allow the lawbreakers in DC to make any laws regarding the sale and use of firearms? Congress doesn’t even have the authority to write a law regulating firearms yet they continue to violate the constitution since the implementation of the second amendment.

You realize we’ll have the 2nd Amendment repealed in the next 10 years, right? All that has to happen is for just one conservative judge on the Supreme court to croak, and then Obama’s replacement will side with the liberal judges in stating that the 2nd Amendment is no longer relevant as the US has a standing army, and that the framers never intended the citizens to have uncontrolled access to ‘arms.’

Gun control will happen. We just have to wait for one of the con. judges to die before it gets 100% official.

@lonelypower You do realize the Bill of Rights doesn’t grant to the people any Rights, do you? All those Rights therein are inherent in the people, and are only declared not created. The right to arms is founded on the natural right to self defense and self preservation, not any mad made law or statute. You do realize that the last time anyone tried to disarm the American citizenry that a full out war broke out, and the armed populace won? You do remember old Georgy and his attempt to confiscate arms and ammunition from those patriots in New England? Expect no less.

In the early 1980s a friend of mine, who lived just outside DC in Maryland left his home to go shoot a few tin cans. He put his Marlin Glenfield (semi auto .22) in the gun rack on his suburban and left his house. He made two left turns in order to get onto Highway 1. This put him over the DC Line. He was stopped, arrested and booked into the DC jail for possession of a machine gun. The Glenfield was a semi auto with a tubed magazine that held about 16 rounds. Under DC Law any weapon that holds more than 9 rounds is a machine gun. He ended up paying a large fine and forfeiting his rifle.
This was when DC was the murder capitol of the US. The man who this happened to is a retired soldier with a clean record, an avid hunter and ourdoorsman who served during WWII and Korea. He has a record now over a $50.00 rifle.

Looks like the Liberal zombies such as Mr. Gregory really don’t have any respect for the law so Mr. Gregory went ahead and showed it to all of his viewers to make a point. Yes Mr. Gregory should be arrested, arraigned in court of law, and then he can file for bond to keep his **** out of jail. Mr. Gregory could have held up a carboard model of the magazine and he would have been within the law, but no he had to show the real item even if it was against a Washington DC ordinance. So you see Mr. Gregory like some other ******** (the Obama’s ,the Holder’s, and the Kennedy’s) think they are above the law.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I guess it would have to be in the hands of a nutjob…. But other than that- it looks VERY DANGEROUS!

Any doubt that if the NRA guy brought that clip that he’d be in jail?

Absolutely, or for that matter anyone who is pro-right to bear arms. The police would have been summoned at once and they would be dragged off the air in cuffs.

The correct term is magazine. Clips are used in M1 Military WWII rifle’s, and fast loader “Clips” for revolver Hand Guns.

Shhh…be quiet man. If they write the law banning 30rd clips we have nothing to worry about. I don’t own any 30rd clips and as far as I know they don’t make them. If they can’t get the nomenclature correct they can’t ban them.

NBC doesn’t bother with truth,… or laws. Those things are burdens only for non-supporters of the regime.

So David Gregory and NBC knowingly broke the law. And used the magazine as a prop from their arguement anyway, for dramatic effect.

What about the broken law! Justice! Where is the justice?

We’re NBC…. No Body Cares if we lie or break the law.

Metro DC should only arrest David Gregory and watch as NBC turns their back on him.

Also, the NRA banner on the TV screen shot should be removed so people just looking at the caption and photo don;t think this liberal POS has anything to do with the NRA. The way it is not, it gives the impression that the loser holding the magazine is from the NRA, which he obviously is not.

…or Obama is their lap dog…kind of hard to tell who is on top. Just another investigation that will fade away. The D.C. police need to get with the program and go do something constructive like…like….ahaaaa….Well, they need to go do something else.
