Horrific New Details Revealed in Christmas Eve Firefighter Murders
WEBSTER, N.Y. (TheBlaze/AP) — The ex-con turned sniper who killed two firefighters wanted to make sure his goodbye note was legible, typing out his desire to “do what I like doing best, killing people” before setting the house where he lived with his sister ablaze, police said.
Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday that the 62-year-old loner, William Spengler, brought plenty of ammunition with him for three weapons including a military-style “assault” rifle as he set out on a quest to burn down his neighborhood just before sunrise on Christmas Eve.
And when firefighters arrived to stop him, he unleashed a torrent of bullets, shattering the windshield of the fire truck that volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, drove to the scene. Fellow firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as a 911 dispatcher, was killed as well.
Two other firefighters were struck by bullets, one in the pelvis and the other in the chest and knee. They remained hospitalized in stable condition and were expected to survive.
On Tuesday, investigators found a body in the Spengler home, presumably that of the sister a neighbor said Spengler hated: 67-year-old Cheryl Spengler. Spengler’s penchant for death had surfaced before. He served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother.
But his intent was unmistakable when he left his flaming home carrying a pump-action shotgun, a .38-caliber revolver and a .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26.
“He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people,” the chief said of a felon who wasn’t allowed to possess weapons because of his criminal past. It was not clear how he got them.
The rifle was believed to be the weapon that struck down the firefighters. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario. His body was not found on a nearby beach until hours afterward.
Residents of the suburban Rochester neighborhood who left their homes during the fire were allowed to return Tuesday. Police SWAT team members had used an armored vehicle to evacuate more than 30 residents.
Spengler’s motive was left unclear, Pickering said, even as authorities began analyzing a two- to three-page typewritten rambling note Spengler left behind.
He declined to reveal the note’s full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: “I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people.”
Pickering added: “There was some rambling in there and some intelligence we need to follow up on.”
It remained unknown what set Spengler off but a next-door neighbor, Roger Vercruysse, noted that he loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living in the house in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters.
Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler’s sister died before or during the fire.
“It was a raging inferno in there,” Pickering said.
As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles.
Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who came to the scene pulled his vehicle alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said.
The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.
“I could see the muzzle blasts comin’ at me. … I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down,” the officer said.
At another point, he said: “I don’t know if I hit him or not. He’s by a tree. … He was movin’ eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots.” Pickering portrayed the officer as a hero who saved many lives.
The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting “firefighters are down” and saying “got to be rifle or shotgun – high-powered … semi or fully auto.”
Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother’s death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario.
That ended when he left his burning home Monday morning, armed with his weapons, a lot of ammunition and a measure of hate.
“I’m not sure we’ll ever know what was going through his mind,” Pickering said.

I, who never believed conspiracy theories, am now wondering about so many things, the timeing, the type of people elected, and I see evil in charge of many men’s souls(yes picky one’s women too). I wonder how easy it would be to send certain people over the edge, just to be able change laws, and I do not think it impossible anymore. I know they want us disarmed, and I ask why, the answer in my head terrifies me for my family.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 1:44pmI agree….I am afraid you are right, Jenny. I think terrifying times are ahead of us and that it won’t be long. Guns don’t kill people….bad people do. That man shouldn’t have been allowed to plead down to manslaughter. He should have been tried for murder one.
Also…laws don’t prevent crimes. I think consequences (when they fit the crime) do deter some people, but more gun laws will just take legally owned guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens not out of the hands of criminals.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 3:19pmRanepowel . . . I guess we can easily do the same for drug use as well. Let’s take away a person’s right to legally purchase Heroin (for example), and then there will be no more deaths by Heroin overdose or illegal Heroin use. Gee, that was easy . . . oh, wait a minute, Heroin is already not legal. How in the world do people get their hands on it?
Amazing.
That must mean, then, that even if we were to outlaw legal gun ownership . . . criminals would still find a way to get their hands on these weapons. Good grief! Whatever can I possibly do to protect myself and my family??

Anyone who does that should be put to death or NEVER LET OUT OF PRISON!
The ACLU needs to go so it won’t be so diffucult to get help for the mentally ill—like the mother who was trying to get her son (can’ think of his name at the moment–who killed 20 kids & 6 adults in CT)
more mental help. Thanks to the “hippie” generation for closing the mental facillities and orphanages.
But I must wonder why the mother had ANY guns in her house that her sone could get to?!? She might have had them in a “safe” but after she was dead the safe wasn’t. If I had a mentally ill son I would NOT have had any weapons in the house at all but in a bank vault so he couldn’t get to them—so why didn’t she! It isn’t the guns fault and we need to focus on mental health not banning guns.
It’s easier for the government to control un-armed citizens than it to control armed ones.

Flash Suppression indeed….it didn’t deter the cops from figuring out they were being shot at and furthermore usually only military-grade ammo has the additive to reduce flash signature in conjunction with some sort of flash suppressor (and some muzzle devices will actually enhance flash).

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 11:53pmJenny Lind, the judicial system is responsible for these tragic deaths for allowing someone who beat their own grandmother to death with a hammer to plead to a lessor included offense (manslaughter) and eventual release back to society. The timer was set by the DA who cut the deal with a homicidal maniac, and those poor firemen cashed the DA’s check. This isn’t about Bushmasters or bullets but about POS who cut deals and take a crap on the scales of justice. Life in prison would have prevented all of this…but I’m just armchair quarterbacking. CA will be enjoying the fruits of its judiciary labors as our overcrowded prisons are lanced and all the pus is allowed to run out on us.

Criminals don’t care about your steenkeen badges, or laws, or the law-abiding citizens who actually wish to comply with the burdens you would impose on people who simply wish to protect themselves and their families from the psychotics who manage to get weapons anyway. Murder is illegal in nearly every state, but funny how we still have murders occuring every day, even in those having a death penalty. Laws mean nothing to the lawless.

The Law Failed Again – the law will fail every time when a criminal is involved – only honest people pay attention to the law. Thus, any Firearm law will leave the Honest Citizen Unprotected and keep the Criminals Armed.
A good question should be answered: How many fires where responded to in the United States? How many Honest Citizens opened fire on the Brave Men sacrificing their lives to put the fires out?

Time an again, we see wicked monsters like this who do the killing. The ******** will in turn, clamor about taking guns away from the law abiding. Just look at this guys picture, and you see evil. This dude killed grandma with a claw hammer. he should have gotten one appeal, then been walked to the gallows, and let swing an example why you do not commit murder.

I see your refuse to read the study from Harvard. Truth scares you.
Of last year’s murders, rifles made up about 320 of them, where handguns were used over 6000 times. for every murder with a rifle, there are 40 murders with another weapon (be it knife, hand gun, or club).
Statics show that when you take away the guns, murder rates go up. It did in England, and in Australia. The cities in the US with the most gun control have the highest murder rates.
In America, we own 88 guns per every 100 people, but there are 25 nations with higher murder rates than ours. Honduras has only a miniscule 6.6 guns per 100 people but have the highest murder per capita rate. Less guns does not mean less murder.
Notice Encinom will not say a word about black murder rates. Blacks makeup up 12.5% of the population, but do half the nation’s murders. If we lowered black murder rates to the same as whites, we would lower the nations murder rate by almost 40%. WHAT SAY YOU ENCINOM???
Encinom will not mention Kevin Jennings. Jennings was Obama’s pick for SAFE SCHOOL CZAR. His only claim to fame was teaching homosexuality to school age children. HEY ENCINOM – Did he make our schools safer? Why will you not talk about Jennings? Was he a smart pick?
The police told us that the Sandy Hook shooter was found with two handguns, and the rifle was in his car. The coroner claims all wounds were made by a rifle. When will the media explain that one?

It is just some spew that Levin, or Hannity or some other right wing gossip host has said, so it must be true for you. Look, we’re not trying to take your precious, so-loved weapons away. If you’re a hunter, that’s fine. If you use a weapon for protection, that’s fine. But if you support everyone obtaining assault rifles, guns that have magazines that have many rounds-( you don’t need that for hunting or protection) then I do not support you. All most Americans want is sound, sane rational gun/weapons discussion and regulation that protects those who don’t want to answer 911 calls and get shot. And we don’t want our children going to school and have some nut who has somehow gotten an assault weapon from his mom, dad or someone else to shoot and kill our children. Enough is enough.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 11:17am“assault rifle” is a political term, not a gun term.
Go to a gun store, and tell them you want a “assault rifle” and “30 round clips” (Magazines being the proper term), and they will run you out of the store.
In the 1950s, you could walk in a hardware store, purchase an M1 Carbine, and all the 20 and thirty round magazines you wanted. The ammo for this rifle could be purchased by the case for cheap.
Why did no one do any mass murders in our schools back then? The m1 Carbine was just as effective as the AR is today.
Back then, we had mental institutions were the crazy folks were kept. Back then, we prayed in school, read the Bible, and learned the ten commandments (there is one about not killing your fellow man).
Encinom knows that socialists in the past took away the guns, then murdered their own people. Encinom also knows that the federal gov cannot take away the Bible until they first take away the guns.
Encinom knows that history shows taking away guns leads to more crime and more murder, but he is not about lowering murder, or he would talk about the black on black murder rates.
Encinom is all for a socialist take over that would murder Christians, and do away with our Bill of Rights.

Did you read the attached link from Harvard?
You refuse to embrace the truth. Taking away the guns, does not lower the murder rate, never has, and never will.
Once again, Americans own 88 guns per 100 citizens, and there are 25 nations with higher murder rates. Honduras owns 6.6 guns per 100 citizens, and has the highest murder rate in the world.
Only a miniscule amount of murders are ever done with a ” rifle”. The majority of our murders in this country are done with a hand gun, and half of them are done by black folks, but you people will not even discuss black on black murder rates, or the fact that there is a direct relationship between violent crime and welfare.
the founding fathers did not recognize our freedom to keep arms to shoot rabbits or burglars. It was recognized, because an armed population is the only means of stopping a corrupt government. Thus the reason Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro….all knew it necessary to take away guns from the people.
The AR is very seldom used in a crime, but it is the one weapon libs are screaming for. The founding fathers allowed citizens to own the same rifle and pistol that the Army used, and the police used. There is a reason that every police force in the nation now uses the AR. Those cops that showed up at Sandy Hook were all armed with ARs.
I compete in the nationals at Camp Perry, Ohio, and I shoot an AR target rifle. This year, I tagged two deer with an AR.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 12:56pmHere’s two countries to support your statistics that more guns = lower crime rate… Switzerland, and Israel. In Switzerland, every one over the age of 18 is given an assault rifle, ammunition, and the training to use it properly. They require every one over the age of 18 to be a member of the militia. Granted, the weapon is to be kept at home, secured, until the call to arms comes through. However, as a result, Switzerland has the lowest crime rate in the world. Israel is of the same ilk. Everyone is armed, but because they only use the weapons in self-defense (and understandably so, being surrounded by violent lunatic asylums (nations) intent on wiping Israel off the face of the earth), they also have one of the lowest crime rates in the world… and they have not had a school shooting incident since 1973!
Tell me… those that believe in more gun control restrictions… why is it that Obama sends his children to a school that has 11 armed guards to protect his children (along with Gary Powers, the idiot in Washington, DC, who waved a 30-round magazine around on his news show, violating WDC law)? Sandy Hook Elementary didn’t have a single armed guard. However, 1/3rd of American schools DO have armed guards, and they aren’t being attacked. Isn’t Obama being a hypocrite?

Additionally, Switzerland has mandatory military service. You want that, too? And Israel has some of the hardest vetting processes for possessing firearms in any western nation. Massive background checks, federal registration and psychological exams are required before you are allowed to train and then possess a firearm.

“A 2004 critical review of research on firearms by a National Research Council panel also noted that academic studies of the “assault” weapon ban “did not reveal any clear impacts on gun violence” and noted “due to the fact that the relative rarity with which the banned guns were used in crime before the ban … the maximum potential effect of the ban on gun violence outcomes would be very small”.
In 2004, a research report submitted to the United States Department of Justice and the National Institute of Justice found that should the ban be renewed (see that ENCIDIOT? Renewed? we already tried it your way little guy), its effects on gun violence would likely be small, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement, because rifles in general, including rifles referred to as “assault rifles” or “assault weapons”, are rarely used in gun crimes.
Furthermore…ENCIDIOT…you know why your little ban won’t make a difference? Because criminals don’t care about gun laws.
You’re an idiot.

Sorry dude, your posted study on crime and concealed carry got blown out of the water.

I see once again, you have absolutely no answer on any of my questions concerning the MSM and libs complete denial of black on black violent crime. You refurse to even acknowlege it exists, and ignore the number of young black males getting killed. Basically you do not care, and are more inclined to push forward with communist goals of disarming America.
What is your answer to Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Castro….. All disarming their populations, then murdering millions of their own citizens? Why is it the libs like you refuse to speak about this historical fact?

Your comment – “People always like to bring up Israel and Switzerland, but never point out the fact that both of those countries have 100% universal healthcare — including mental healthcare.”
They also ignore the fact that these countries have a sever shortage of African folks????
African Americans make up 12.5% of our population, and do half of the nations murders. The majority of the nations in the top 25 countries with highest murder rates are in Africa, or South American countries with a high percentage of African peoples. This is not opinion, it is fact. What say you?
argue all you want, but higher gun ownership does not equal higher crime. Check the stats in the Europe. The countries with the lowest gun ownership have some of the highest murder rates.
When England and Australi outlawed handguns, murder rates went up, not down, and gun violence went up also.

your comment – - violent video games reduce violence
http://ocw.metu.edu.tr/pluginfile.php/5587/mod_resource/content/2/Cunnigham_Engelstaetter_2011.pdf”
Just who do you think funded that little study?
Basically, when we tripled the number of folks in prison (liberal judges were turning them back on the street in the 60s and 70s), crime went down nationally. It just so happens that as crime was going down, that the invention of the violent video games was hitting the market, thus Scott Cunningham and crowd want to draw the conclusion that violent video games made crime go down, wow, brilliant.
Psychological studies invariably find a positive relationship between violent video game play and aggression. This is fact. We also noted that every single one of these school shooters in the past fifteen years have been avid gamers of the violent games. The columbine shooters were heavy into the game “Doom”. The latest shooter lived on the computer and was into the “Goth” lifestyle. The Colorado shooter was into the violent video games, and literally tried to become the Villain from one of the more popular violent movies.
Don’t piss on our backs, and expect us to believe it is raining.

Sorry, that study by Lott is a collections of lies brought and paid for by the Gun Makers. Poor Bastard gun nuts, they can’t handle the truth so instead they grasp at lies. Caught lying about conducting survevys http://web.archive.org/web/20110606235648/http:/www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~lambert/guns/lindgren.html
http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2003/02/09/lottethics/
With regards to the “Corrected” study, its another Lott lie:
“In an interview conducted on August 18 (transcript), Lott told me that he had posted “corrected” tables on his website for all to see. But when I downloaded Lott’s “corrected” version of the contested table, it showed the same numerical values as that of Donohue and Ayres — that is, the coding errors were gone — but bizarrely claimed the properly coded data still indicated statistically significant drops in murder, rape, and robbery. That’s because Lott had introduced a new twist: Rather than simply fixing the incorrectly coded data, he omitted a key calculation regarding statistical significance used in the Plassmann-Whitley paper. (For statistics geeks, it’s called “clustering at the state level.”) Faced with no other way to save his thesis, you could say that Lott changed the rules — rules his own team had laid down — in the middle of the game. ” http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2003/10/double-barreled-double-standards

Posted on December 27, 2012 at 11:41amGreat paper, everyone who wishes to debate gun control should first read this. When ppl say eliminate guns and reduce violent crimes: all u have to say is the studies conducted do not support your theory. In fact it’s the opposite, there is a direct positive correlation in increased gun control in fact leads to higher violent crime rates. And in English states further assault on personal freedoms; like random car searches without consent. So called random is my guess. Hmm I don’t like the way you look so let’s search your car. It’s funny that they give muggers a warning and let the go(that’s because since banning guns their crime rate is so high, so they don’t prosecute. Great link; if you don’t read the Harvard study(highly liberal source btw) than just shut up. Because banning guns in no way decreases crimes. It actually causes an increase in all crimes.

Guess you did not read the link. Obviously not. Because hard evidence does not support your theory. Absolutely: “no gun control measures have been found to decrease violent crime or any crime thereof, intact the opposite is true; more gun control leads to an increase in all crime”
Got it. Lets start practicing in evidence based studies. Would you want your doctor to presume things based on theory or do you want him to practice what evidence says is fact. Sometimes what would seem to be the right thing is actually the wrong thing. I know that ppl like you think it would be a good thing to decrease gun ownership. But this is one of those things that is different from a common perception. Prior to 1996(gun free zone law implementation). There had been one major school shooting is the us(west Texas university, sniper climbed a tower and began picking ppl off). Since that time their has Ben a 1000 % increase in school shootings. They are easy targets. Evidence supports this statement: banning guns causes an increase in gun involved murder!

Because instead it smacks of the alarmism the media is pushing across the board to further gun control aims. Once again, even the Blaze seems intent on demonizing the gun…
Maybe he should have set something to smoldering, filled the house with gas, and blown it up when the fire department went in… would Blaze be helping to advocate banning propane or gas heating, then?
And it was NOT just reporting the facts… there is a clear attitude about the weapon used, rather than just a statistical acconting of what was used.
Wake up and stop being part of the problem, Blaze!
Why no reporting of the criminal justice system failure as the big issue?
Why no notation of mental health?

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 1:02pmWhen cutbacks started happening in the mental health industry, the asylums that were holding these lunatics closed. That put these people out on the streets, homeless, no place to go, because the system failed them. We are suffering the consequences of this drastic decision. Do you think MOST families can afford taking care of mentally ill family members? Nope… the average ones cannot, because they make too much money to qualify for assistance from the federal government… so the sick end up falling through the cracks, and end up in situations like these shooting incidents. None of these people should have had access to weapons, yet, somehow, they did. All the gun control advocates don’t want to accept that the black market will explode, when the gun bans take affect… and that’s how these mentally ill criminals get their guns.
However, law-abiding citizens who buy guns have to have them registered, so that when the guns get taken away, the federal government knows exactly where to go to confiscate them. It’s the law-abiding citizen who ends up with the short end of the stick, trying to defend themselves against these sick people.

They are created by progressives to reduce the opposition to the total takover of citizen rights in favor of government control. If they de-arm the public, it makes it easier to do whatever they want to do. How many times in history have we seen this happen and yet here we are again, falling right in lock step, whining about it, but letting them disarm us without a fight. Republicans let the left define the argument everytime one of these crimes happens. They start to give in, little by little, which is what progressives do. The UN starts pushing for the Arms Trade Treaty, which has a provision buried in it that all civilians eventually be disarmed. Hillary Clinton indicates that the US will commit to it. The People’s Republic of China decides that the US should disarm all it’s citizens (while they put theirs in uniforms and arm them). Obama promises the gun grabbers that after he is re-elected that he would work vigorously for more gun legislation. And in every incident, from Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma City, to Gabby Giffords’ (which was really set up to kill the judge that went to see her at her rally), on down the line to Adam Lanza and the Sandy Hook Elementary School, there were mysterious individuals that were in the company of the perpetrators, who disappeared into the background, never to be seen again… yet enough witnesses saw them, and they were reported. Now, Eric Holder has been connected to the the Oklahoma City bombing, through the FBI and DOJ. And then they videotaped the extraction of the gun from the trunk, and lo and behold, it’s not a Bushmaster AR rifle, but a SHOTGUN! They showed the trooper ejecting the shells (which destroyed evidence, as they did it). So, where did the rifle come from? Witnesses reported seeing a man disappearing into the woods behind the school during the attack, and he was wearing black clothing… I suspect that this was the actual shooter, and Adam Lanza was just a patsy (like Lee Harvey Oswald, in JFK’s killing). You don’t know that. He could have gotten them from Eric Holder. I mean, if he were a Mexican national exporting weed and meth to the US while murdering 1000′s of their own people. Bad people in foreign countries get the good stuff too. Not like the semi-automatic crap we’re allowed to have. Hell they even get stinger missiles.

Just look at Mexico. Guns not allowed, except for the mofia and bad people who get all they want.

Many are religious fanatics others are greedy lazy pigs and many are the mentally ill….that is who makes up the progressives. This group rules based on veiled hate and the media is their leader. Posted on December 26, 2012 at 8:01amWell now, another criminal got his hands on firearms. Doesn’t he know that is against the law? And of course, the military style assault rifle. Sure Feinstein is feeling pretty giddy about this!

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 9:22amHey Stuck, great story/link. It sounds crazy but I belive it. All you have to do is take a look at what is going on. Don’t you think it’s odd that every big shooting lately has the AR15 invoulved and the media is fanning the flames. Obama recently stated something about the military working with local police…everything that can be done to destroy the dollar is being done. We are in bizzaro world. Hope all the Blazers had a good Christmas!
