Spokesman: Former President George H.W. Bush in Intensive Care Unit After ‘Series of Setbacks’

HOUSTON (TheBlaze/AP) — A spokesman says former President George H.W. Bush is in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital.

Bush’s spokesman, Jim McGrath, said late Wednesday that the former president was admitted to the ICU on Sunday at Methodist Hospital, “following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever.”

“He is considered in guarded condition,” McGrath said. “He has suffered a series of setbacks.”

McGrath says Bush is alert and conversing with medical staff, and that doctors are cautiously optimistic about his treatment.

No other details about his medical condition were provided, but McGrath says Bush is surrounded by family.

Earlier Wednesday, McGrath said a fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and that doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet.

A bronchitis-like cough initially brought Bush to the hospital in late November. McGrath says the cough has improved.

McGrath had said earlier in the day that the fever had gone away, but he later corrected himself.

“It’s an elevated fever, so it’s actually gone up in the last day or two,” McGrath told The Associated Press. “It’s a stubborn fever that won’t go away.”

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil’s wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush’s daughter, Dorothy, will arrive Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited twice by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II – at one point the youngest in the Navy – and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

We were raised to blindly admire WWII vets, but not all were good. This Bush brought us NAFTA, an invitation to the New World Order, a tax lie, doubled immigration, fostered a climate of corporate greed, bowed to the Saudi king, and played a role in JFK’s assassination to name just a few.

Repent Sir. Your time is at hand. A director of the CIA has things to get straight before death.

There was so many things I disliked about President G.H.W. Bush after President Reagan gave him the reins to the USA.He failed to carry on a great legacy.
I always liked reading about his airplane jumps though.I love Paratroopers.God Bless you President George Herbert Walker Bush.

@Red Meat: I would hate to be such a hard hearted person as you that would wish ANYONE to burn in hell. Maybe you have not experienced salvation by grace through faith but it is available to all, you need only ask God. But to wish that someone would burn in hell tells me what you think of your fellow man, regardless of politics, race or religion (or lack thereof). I can only hope you find forgiveness for your soul.

So uncalled for. Bush was a principled man. I may not have agreed with his politics but he is a great American. His WWII service proved his bravery. He was much more deserved of his position than his AWOL son.

His service in WW2 was before he became an elite and before he became a spook. My uncles fought on the ground in WW2 in the battle of the bulge and Normandy. They were far more heroic than Bush ever was.

Factually speaking, W did not go AWOL….ever. He was however critizised for being in the Air National Guard and avoiding the draft ( presumed because he was H.W’s son, his name never came up). However, Clinton DID dodge the draft and protested the Viet Nam war in Russia during his college years. I believe when he was asked about it on MTV he said something like…”I did what I thought was right”. Soon after, the “I didn’t inhale” question came up.

Then, other things came up, cigars were “smoked”, dna was glowing under a phosphorus lab light, voices were recorded, lies were told, dresses were presented, impeachment was imposed and justice was ignored. But, through it all, Bill Clinton is harolded by the left. Mean while, Please Mr. Deuteronomy spends his tale, burning a Bush, rather than chastising President B.J. Clinton.

“He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.” Please look up the definition of “notoriety” before you use it. Journalists should know that it has a negative connotation.

Troonorth, sometimes incompetence is just that, incompetence. Not everything has a political motivation behind it, and I have no reason to think that this does. The misuse of the word “notoriety” by journalists is epidemic. This just happens to be the latest example of it.

Chief of the Liaison Office to the People’s Republic of China under President Ford from Sep 74 to Dec 75
United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President Nixon from Mar 71 to Jan 73

Also don’t forget his service as a US Navy pilot during WWII.

Clearly he has served beyond the call of duty for the USA. For that, he has earned my respect.

I must agree with you. Although a likable man, and a far damn cry from the sorry excuse of a president we currently have, he did give us Supreme Court Justice David Souter. I spent years believing he was fooled by this turncoat Souter, but in light of his son’s EXACT same mistake with John ‘Fake’ Robertson, I now believe it was on purpose, serving the agenda of furthering one world government. Just my opinion. Still wish him well as a human being, tho.
