This Is Why a Shark-Filled Aquarium in a Shopping Center Is a Bad Idea
As shoppers came and went from a Shanghai shopping center last week, a 33-ton decorative aquarium in the lobby suddenly shattered, sending gallons of water, fish, turtles and three live lemon sharks on top of people who were standing nearby.
As Deadspin points out, the sharks are harmless to humans, so luckily no shoppers needed to be treated for shark bites. However, three sharks died and 15 people were reportedly injured by broken glass.
“There were lots of injuries caused by flying glass, some of them serious because the glass was so thick. We are investigating what caused this,” a police spokesman told the Austrian Times.
“There was no warning. Just a loud crack and it went. I’ve never been so scared,” one worker said.
An official with the shopping center said they are not going to “build an aquarium again in the future.”

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 9:52pmEven though we’re talking about China, a country not known for engineering excellence, presumably the aquarium walls weren’t actually made out of glass. If they were, that by itself explains the failure of the walls. Large aquariums don’t use glass, they use acrylic, which is a polymer. Plastic in other words.
I know you don’t care. But it make the story itself suspect.
As you were.

Posted on December 27, 2012 at 12:25amBarry Petchesky once noted that human life takes precedence over that of an animal (the context was Michael Vick’s dogs). However, when he is spontaneously relaying news Petchesky says, “[T]hree sharks died and 15 people were reportedly injured by broken glass,” implying that dead sharks matter more or as much as injured human beings.
There you have the liberal mind in a nutshell: a cesspool of cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy. This man’s liberal heart bleeds for a dead shark, but, geez, give Vick the dog killer a pass, will ya? After all, a dog doesn’t have a soul (but lemon sharks are an endangered species, is that it?). Or maybe Petchesky was gently chiding his readers for their inability to forgive a black man, thereby exposing their deep-seated racist attitude. That would explain the apparent contradiction, given Petchesky’s fictional view of another black man, Obama, whom he describes as an “elegant, well-educated, cerebral black man.” We’re talking the black Einstein. But no, dude. Somehow your remark sounds eerily similar to Bozo the Clown’s when he called Obama an “African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
Petchesky is a product of Columbia University, so here’s the point of my seemingly off-topic comment: It is our God-given duty to protect our kids’ malleable brains and open hearts (souls) from the ravages of the liberal educational system.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 7:59pmSo why exactly is a shark-filled aquarium in a mall a bad idea? It’s not like the sharks bit anyone when the aquarium cracked. What was in the aquarium or where it was located is irrelevant in this story. You might as well say, “This is why an aquarium anywhere is a bad idea.”

Posted on December 27, 2012 at 11:23amWe should ban ALL fish tanks because of the danger they pose. Just think of the poor injured shoppers, during this breakage spree. It’s good the sharks died, save the taxpayers money in legal fees and housing at the shark prison.
