Viral Video of Insanely Talented Norwegian Kicker Has Caught the NFL’s Attention
Although we’re tempted to offer an analysis of Norwegian football player Havard Rugland’s kicking technique and style, it’s probably best if you see it for yourself:
Rugland posted the video to YouTube in September and it was met with moderate success. However, it wasn’t until major U.S. sports networks started promoting the video that it went viral:
Dear NFL Teams: If you need a kicker, you might want to take a look at this guy -> bit.ly/STf3dN
— ESPN (@espn) October 11, 2012
Unsurprisingly, the video has caught the attention of some in the National Football League, namely the New York Jets. The team recently hosted Rugland and his kicking coach, Michael Husted, for a tryout.
“Havard’s workout with the Jets when very well,” says Husted. “They definitely see his potential. They understand that he has never played the game, but his leg strength impressed them. They would like him to continue to train and then they will bring him back in for another workout at the end of February.”
“It has been very exciting to be part of something that has gone viral,” he adds. “It has been amazing that in just a couple of days, the number of views for Havard’s kicking video has doubled. His talent and creativity in the video that got him noticed by NFL teams, and the subsequent workout with the Jets, has caught the attention of the media worldwide and more NFL teams.”

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 9:49pmThis thing looks fake to me. The ball in many of the kicks doesn’t seem to fly quite right.
Perhaps I’m wrong.

Posted on December 27, 2012 at 5:47amdoesn’t matter. none of what he does is of any use to an NFL kicker. The kicks that say 60 yds etc. have a weird angle so you can’t tell if they are actually the yardage they claim.

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 9:30pmId like to see him in pads and with a line. Or better yet kick head to head against guys like Matt Prater, David Akers and Janikowski. I think hed embarass himself.
Prater kicks in pregame from 70-75 yards. In pads with 21 other guys in front him.
I think it would be a massive fail.

Posted on December 27, 2012 at 2:08pmLOL. Yeah, he kicks in pregame from 70-75 yards… then why has NOBODY made one that long in a real game?
This guy will be on an NFL team next year. How many good kickers are there in the NFL? 3? 4?

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 11:30amThe reason they don’t make kicks from 75 yards out isn’t the ability to kick that far. It’s because the angle on a kick that long is more easily blocked by the opposing team.

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 8:19pmIt’s mostly because if you miss a 75 yard kick you’re giving the other team the ball on your own 35 yard line. And they can also attempt to return the kick as if it’s a punt if it comes down in the field of play, which field goal teams aren’t ready for because they’re concerned entirely with blocking for the kicker.
Kicking in a game is far more difficult for a lot of reasons though. You can’t place the ball perfectly just how you want it in perfect conditions and casually stroll up at your leisure to make the kick.
