NEW YORK (AP) — A mumbling woman pushed a man to his death in front of a subway train on Thursday night, the second time this month someone has been killed in such nightmarish fashion, police said.

The man, who wasn’t immediately identified, was standing on the elevated platform of a 7 train in Queens at about 8 p.m. when he was shoved by the woman, who witnesses said had been following him closely and mumbling to herself, New York Police Department chief spokesman Paul Browne said. It didn’t appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said.

The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.

It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was shoved in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either.

A homeless man, 30-year-old Naeem Davis, was charged with murder in Han’s death and was ordered held without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and has said that Han was the aggressor and had attacked him first. The two men hadn’t met before.

Service was suspended Thursday night on the 7 train line, which connects Manhattan and Queens, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was using buses to shuttle riders while police investigated.

Being pushed onto the train tracks is a silent fear for many of the commuters who ride the city’s subway a total of more than 5.2 million times on an average weekday, but deaths are rare. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale, who was shoved by a former mental patient. After that, the state Legislature passed Kendra’s Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren’t threats to safety.

Why the hell don’t they just install barriers like they have at EVERY OTHER TRAIN STATION IN THE WORLD!!! It is obvious that these idiots in NYC are not smart enough to keep back from the edge and they have crazies running about pushing people on the tracks and then masses that just watch in amazement when it is their turn to see what they see in the movies in real life. They can’t be trusted to be safe at all. So just install gates that are motorized and make them wait in line like the subway is an amusement park ride.

I’ve noticed it’s almost always the front half of the train that kills so if we eliminate the front half of trains these people would not be killed. This should make perfect sense to those dumbasses wanting to ban guns.

how about if the trains come to a complete stop BEFORE entering each terminal? Then they can have a conductor get out and scan the tracks before proceding into the terminal. Also add an addtional camera to the terminal on each end and then terminal “overseers” to contact the Conductor to verfiy no one in on the tracks. Sounds like the three letter word: J-O-B-S ! They would have to hire additional people for the trains, what a breakthrough. maybe that’s what all this is about anyway. And hey if we hire the loonies in those positions it’ll keep them to busy to push anyone.

Another senseless act of violence. We either need to slow the subway train down to 3 mph (at all times) or do away with the subway train to prevent further deaths.

Last year alone in NY City: 146 people where hit by a subway train and 47 people where killed. I see a serious problem here. Old Bloomy something must be done about subway trains.

Gee, what is that saying started by a program with New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)? C’mon, you guys know, the one that was even borrowed with permission by Homeland Security? That saying that is so similar to the one under the Bush Admin that was so pooh-poohed by the left, especially the media? Oh yeah…..”If you see something, say something!” Oh yeah, didn’t this last incident occur yet again within the scope of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority? As Jim Morrison used to sing, People Are Strange. If you spot these deranged people acting oddly in areas where they can be dangerous it is best to report them. Attention directed towards them by the authorities and the time to have a short conversation will let even the craziest know that somebody is paying attention.
Again, what is the single common thread amongst our most recent murderers? Mental illness apparently. At least there has yet to be a knee jerk reaction by ENCINOM to ban trains or even subway platforms.

This is not a hard thing to fix. I’ve been in several airports with subway systems. In every one, it is impossible to push someone onto the tracks. Between commuters and trains is a wall with doors. The doors open once the train is in the station.

Is the idea of a wall so revolutionary, no one’s thought of it before? I got a bunch of them in my house and most of them have doors, so I’m pretty sure the technology is sound.

Yes, and everyone owning a train needs to be photographed, fingerprinted, pass a background check, and must be authorized by the United Nations to own a train. They should be on a national registry with interactive websites showing their home address. Anyone caught with a train in a ‘train free zone’ should be locked up for the maximum amount of time. No person shall have a train capable of pulling more than ten cars.

NYC needs to regulate subway platforms, starting with mandatory distances of 6 feet between each person on the platforms. Only infants and small children are exempt. Jobs will be created for “platform monitors”, that will have arrest powers if the 6 foot distance isn’t maintain.

I sure that Mayor Bloomberg will jump at the chance to enact these new regulations.

Such a program is not beyond the scope of the NYC Transit Authority. The reason passengers crowd the platforms is they hope to be the first on board in order to clain any vacant seat available.

Chain link fences with gates which automatically open after the train comes to a complete stop and will allow passengers to exit through one way rotating gates (Out) and allow boarding the trains with the same gate assembly (In) could be installed 5 to 6 feet from the edge of the platform.

Theme parks already have such passenger controls on steam trains and other rides in their parks in order to keep patrons from getting injured.

Maybe I’m just a high-school graduate moron, but can’t they – OH I DON’T EFFING KNOW – install 7 or 8 foot plexiglass BARRIERS along these platforms with sliding panels where the train doors end-up? Then no one gets pushed or trips, etc – and it’d be harder for anyone to suicide this way.
