A good logo can be the difference between success and failure for a company. As it’s the most visible representation of a group and its product, it’s understandable why certain companies choose to put so much time and effort into perfecting their logo.
That said, did you notice these major logo changes in 2012? For instance, did you see Domino’s Pizza changed from this –
Or that the Twitter bird got a haircut:
Or that USA Today decided to ditch the globe imagery and replace it with a big blue dot:
And there were really, really big changes as well. Look at what Lifetime did to its logo:
And look at what retail giant JCPenney did to its logo:
Lastly, it appears that Wendy’s hair has become somewhat unruly:

Dec. 28, 2012 at 12:11amIt was nice to see TheBlaze change its logo? You can have an awesome logo, but have a failing company? How many times was the US flag burned last year? The flag is a logo? Do people make the logo, or does the logo make the people?
Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow, it will soon be here, logo or not?

Dec. 27, 2012 at 3:21pmI want commend USA Today on their new logo. They must have burned the candle at both ends coming up with such an elaborate, creative design!
Domino’s, instead of improving their pizza, have instead changed their logo.
And JC Penney? Nice work! Yet another logo reduced to initials, along with IHOP and KFC.

To be honest, I really never knew what the “USA” stood for anyways.
As for Wendy’s, their new returaunt overhauls have looked good. With Biggie Dave dying, it was pretty clear they wanted to ditch that olde fashioned charm.

Glad to see someone here has some smarts on this.
I own a product and I will tell you that annual printing costs are always something you try to reduce because it’s just overhead with a zero profit margin. Just reducing a little ink will save any company a great deal at the end of each year.
Also product recognition is important and updating your look to help with the younger consumers is a must to survive. You can’t just leave it as is or your look will go stale.
I really see this as just good business and not some kind of alternative political ploy.

Dec. 27, 2012 at 12:51pmOnly the Twitter one is not terrible. The Domino’s one just looks bad and amateurish, like they hired some hipster artist fresh out of college to design it. It’s much worse in the JC Penny logo. If you’re gonna shorten it to jcp, why keep a huge red empty box behind it? It just looks stupid. The new Wendy’s logo doesn’t make me want to go eat at Wendy’s. Makes me want to turn around and go to McDonald’s instead.
I think the worst of the bunch has to be USA Today. I guess, being a newspaper, USA Today is already basically dead, and that stupid logo just a big blue dead featureless circle reflects USA Today’s state of affairs.

“Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance. No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby. (Notes On Journalism in the Chicago Tribune (19 September 1926)”

Dec. 27, 2012 at 1:42pmThe symptoms of a miser – too old to understand, therefore it must be wrong. And speaking of old, didn’t the Egyptians use hieroglyphics as a way to communicate, achieving considerable accomplishments? Are letters not symbols, simply arranged in ways to produce larger constructs of thought? Perhaps these logos represent simply a path of linguistic change? When language dies or becomes obsolete, living on borrowed time, art endures. But don’t take my word for it, simply that last sentence, once spoken by Cicero.
