College Student Granted Restraining Order Against Own Parents for Being Overbearing — But Wait Until You Hear the Details

Aubrey Ireland Wins Restraining Order Stalking Case Against Parents in Cincinnati

Are you a parent? Has your child ever accused you of meddling? While such accusations are many times levied on a whim, you may want to pay attention to this story and weigh in.

There’s a term out there called “helicopter parents” — moms and dads who do more than just take an interest in their kids, but try to dictate their every move, take an interest in every detail, and even live vicariously through their sons and daughters. Twenty-one year old Aubrey Ireland knows the type full well. That’s because she just won a restraining order case against her parents who have taken the idea of being involved to a whole new extreme.

Aubrey is a senior actress at the University of Cincinnati’s prestigious College-Conservatory of Music. This fall, she finally had it with her overbearing parents. The school was tired of it, too, having witnessed the odd behavior for years. After Aubrey filed a civil stalking case against them and the judge heard the details, he agreed to order Aubrey’s parent to stay away.

So what were they doing? The Cincinnati Inquirer has the surprising accusations, which include the parents installing tracking software on Aubrey’s electronics (emphasis added):

Despite her good grades and success in musical shows, David and Julie Ireland often drove 600 miles from Leawood, Kan., to visit their daughter unannounced. They accused her of using illegal drugs, promiscuity and suffering from mental woes. She insisted none of that was true and asked them to stop, but their accusations escalated. They informed her department head she had mental issues that could force them to go to court to have her treated.

The parents knew about what they saw as their daughter’s problems because, they admit, they installed monitoring software on her laptop and cellphone, allowing them to see her every keystroke and phone number dialed or received. It was “like I was a dog with a collar on,” said the daughter, a dean’s list student every quarter.

The parents became such an issue that the school hired security guards to keep them out of their daughter’s performances. When the parents stopped paying her tuition because she’d cut off all contact with them, the school gave her a full scholarship for her final year.

“It’s just been really embarrassing and upsetting to have my parents come to my university when I’m a grown adult and just basically slander my name and follow me around,” the accomplished young actress said in court.

Her mother responded: “She’s an only child who was catered to all her life by loving parents. We’re not bothering her. We’re not a problem.”

The relationship, to say the least, isn’t doing well. Julie Ireland is trying to get back the $66,000 the parents had already spent on Aubrey’s education and have accused her of being a “good actress and lying.” A third-party “interventionist,” however, has even sided with Aubrey.

So for now, the parents have been ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from their daughter until Sept 23, 2013.

  Well was she miss using their money, or not. If she was doing drugs and drinking on their dime; I say no they were not overbearing,but if she’s there on her own dime and is paying them back as agreed, then; yes they should let the druggy do her thing, very hard to do as a parent, I know.   I’m not saying that the parents are not overbearing, but the Govt. has caused this. They make the parents responsible for mistakes that the kids make on their own until they are 21, and now they have tied the kids to the parents with health care until the age of 26.   I can’t fault the parents for trying, but it’s nearly impossible to “legislate” morality. A change of heart in the daughter is what would make a difference. I was raised by liberal progressive parents who were concerned by my wayward living— but when I became a born again Christian?…That’s when the crap REALLY hit the fan.

  Great parody… we expect the government to take care of us (providing Jobs, Healthcare?, etc.), and then we get upset because they want to keep checks on us… (SSN, Phone #, Address, Taxes, Bank statements, I.P address’s, Healthcare#, credit card purchases, registering of your guns, etc.).
  
  She is 21 years old… whether the parents babied her or not. She is an adult by current standards. Whether the parents made a poor investment is between them… at least they had a choice. Where this school can decide (like most schools) to give out scholarships based on home life is questionable at most (maybe another new category), allowing a government total control of its citizens is what is of concern. Unfortunately, half this country is screaming for more government control. Go figure???

  where in this story does it say she’s a druggy @ ISHMOT2 ? Why would you call her a druggy, it doesn’t say that anywhere? many of your comments on other stories come back to drugs, I’m guessing there’s a “druggy” some where close to you that has skewed your outlook,but we should probably stick to the facts. her parents were spying on her and calling her insane.   She’s 21. If here parents gave her money that’s their problem. If they were so pissed about her behaviour why did they continue to support it? They can give me money too. Then I’ll put a restraining order against them if they pry. If there was no contract attached to the “loan” then they should buzz off. If she was doing illegal drugs call the authorites but beyond that mind your own business. Now if she is running around the subways acting irrationally they may have a point. But I don’t think so.   Hey Bluehen, I just have to ask if the standards at UD have dropped so low that they no longer require the study or use of the English language for graduation? I understand that with all of the newly required diversity and other indoctrination courses they only have so many hours in a semester for classes, but please learn to use proper capitalization and grammar. If they wonder why I toss their alumni donation requests, it should be obvious.

  As far as I’m concerned, she is a child and was living as their child (they paid all of her bills and took care of her), and therefore, she is their child and they have the right to ensure her safety and teach her in any way that they see fit. A parent / child relationship is peculiar in that it is a benevolent dictatorship, not a republic. If her parents wanted to keep tabs on her, fine. If she didn’t like it, she should have stopped taking their money, gotten a job, and paid for her own bills.

We The People should also be able to get a restraining order, impeach the whole government and put a stop to this complete rudeness.   This should warn any company that she will sue them if some fellow worker passes gas in her presence. Give her an interview and tell her you still have others to interview and then notify her you hired someone more qualified.My sons have a construction company and had a guy come in that came from a votech that taught heavy equipment and he passed at the top of his class. My sons start new employees at $12.00 an hour. He told my son that he wouldn’t start out for less than $18.00 an hour and he would not get off of a backhoe to work a shovel as sometime they must. Soon she will be in that land where dreams come true and all that money well spent on tuition will begin to payoff , you guessed it ,Hollywood Ca. . I see it all now young fresh faced “actress” starts her new gig waiting tables hoping to be discovered but after a few years of frustration a shady guy offers the struggling actress some work (she needs the money) doing a little soft core porn ,then come the drugs and the hard core porn ,next thing you know shes sold as a sex slave to some evil foreigner who wants to make a snuff flick .   There is definitely something very wrong with parents who would SPY on their child in college, making good grades. I suspect the mother is the culprit in this case, but I hope they will devote their efforts to helping kids or doing something with their own lives – you cannot force kids to ‘love you’. Your first 5 years determines a huge block of how kids will respond and you can’t make it up afterwards by ‘hovering’. I feel sorry for this young person…the mental abuse is often much worse than the physical abuse. She’ll be able to find employment and take care of herself. Kudos for her being able to break this strangle-hold. No one should be allowed to SPY via electronic devices like this. THINK ABOUT IT.

These are shameful acts of some truly OVER THE TOP PARENTS. The parents need to seek some mental help, the actions they displayed were not of parenting but something much more sinister. I would venture that if the school thought enough of her to stand behind her and provide for her last year that they see what you are missing. Your thought process seems to be off center, I doubt very seriously that this woman would ever entertain moving back in with the Hiltler’s from Kansas

  Some of you ought to try reading a book called Boundaries, if you want to have a good relationships. These parents are way out of line and have destroyed their relationship with their daughter, not the other way around. If you are funding your child’s college education, then yes, you do have the right to expect certain things-primarily good grades and a degree that’s worth a crap. However, it does not grant you the right to spy on and enslave your adult child. As an adult, your child will do things you disagree with and make mistakes – just like you did. If you want them to grow and mature as a person, step back and let them take the wheel.

  Patty Henry, my employer monitors everything I do on my computer and work phone. The courts have said it is legal for them to do so. What isn’t mentioned in the article, was if the parents paid for her laptop, her phone. We know they paid for her college and room and board, at least until she filed her restraining order. Based on court cases, parents who pay for internet service, computers and phones at their homes, can monitor the users of such devices. While it sounds like the parents went a little far, if they paid for it, they can monitor it.

  This girl’s parents were way out of line with what they were doing. If they wanted to monitor her that badly they could have sent her to a local college. The idea that they felt it was OK to bug her phone and laptop as well as show up on campus whenever they felt like it says something is wrong with their own sanity. Obviously after hearing testimony from witnesses on both sides a judge agreed. It’s also telling that the school had to ban them from her performances.

Well, you did vote for Barack Obama so not only is he your new Pappy but all 3 of you will now have the to finance the final 2 years of your University educations including room and board. Each of your AMEX cards now has a $200 limit and will cancel January 2.
  
  Now for the good news, Mom and I received our refund from University and as you can see Mom is truly enjoying her new BMW and I’m really enjoying my new vintage MG. Now along with your new gift necessities’, i.e. underwear, shoes, each of you have been given a year’s subscription to The Daily Word, a copy of our Bill of Rights and our Constitution. I’m sure there are jobs like your Mother and I had to take to finance our own educations but I have no fear as we know you’re much smarter than us because you tell us so. So, Merry Christmas Kids! This is why self-reliancy is so important. So you can be free to make your own choices and so nobody can hold anything against you. My parents are proud of me and love me even when I stand up to them because they know I am capable and have never taken a dime from them after I moved out (over ten years ago). “leave and cleave”. That is the key. Cut the apron strings and let people learn. The hard way is often the most rewarding way.

  Yea, maybe in a perfect world where they have the freedom to choose. Not everyone has that freedom. We sent our daughter off to college. She was a friendly kid, getting all A’s and was happy to see her parents visit every 2 weeks. Then, suddenly she called and asked us not to come because she was busy with school work. Each time we called to ask to visit, she would say no. We drove out there only to find that she would not answer her door. We asked the Police for help but they would only knock on her door and get the same result. They said that since she was 22 she was an adult and could refuse company. Long story short, we discovered from one of her class mates that she had been abducted when a strange guy forced his way into her home. Over the course of months she was beaten, brainwashed and forced to accept her captor as her master and reject all of her family and friends. Police still will not help. This is a sad but true story. We have been unable to assist her. Moral of the story is to keep your kids close so you can protect them.

She is 21, not a child. She has the right to choose her associations. If she is not a drug addict, she should also consider sueing for character assasination. She could have gotten kicked out of school or lost a job opportunity because of her parents defamatory remarks.

  If they are paying her bills, providing any housing, or paying her tuition, IT IS their business. If not, not so much so, although concern would still be a natural reaction by a parent. It sounds like they’ve raised a snot nosed brat to me. They should obey the order cut her off of any financial help and support (if any) and let her lie in her own bed.

  A snot nose brat? Hmmm, If I found tracking devices in my equipment, parents trying to seduce me by using others to get me mental assistance, I believe I would be having a problem too. Besides, its not just her saying it. The school is too. She is on the Honor Roll every year and has great re poor with all she comes in contact with. As far as drugs, I had a son go through that. Believe me, if you are on drugs, sooner or later you WILL crash. So, based on information provided, I have to support her, the judge, and the school that gave her a free ride for her last year.

  You people are making assumptions that the story doesn’t support. No where does it say that she was doing drugs and her grades are great or she wouldn’t have continually made the Dean’s List. This isn’t a story about an out of control young woman but her out of control overbearing parents. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to wise up. Even if her parents were footing the bill they were still acting very strangely. This to me sounds like the parents of an only child, stated in the story, who can’t let go.

  Not defending the parents, but they were paying for her school. Thankfully, even after they cut her off (which is the appropriate action to take if you think your child isn’t doing “the right thing”) the school gave her a scholarship.
  
  This is really less about being the legal age and much more about REALLY overbearing parents. I’m betting they don’t want her to be an actress, which is what it looks like she’s studying.

  Its not that simple dear.She has no choice really.While she can get married join the service she still has to show her parents income for financial aid.The only way someone under 24 can prove independence from their parents for financial aid purposes is to either be married ,formerly married fully responsible for a dependents suppor or otherwise certified in a court as an adult.Neither her or her parents has much choice on that.
  Her parents if they even are her parents are looking to make her their gravy train.Its quite possible they want to use her to collect a check every month.There is no indication that she is suffering mental illness or addiction.This though is a favorite lie to try an illegaly obtain control custody over someone..Be it a greedy parent lover spouse organized crime ring or terrorists.Their are simply different twists used with different goals at hand.

  @STA – IF your college age kids are living with you then I could understand a curfew and a ban of inviting people over without permissions and introductions beforehand however tracking software is completely overboard. It also implies not only a lack of trust in your offspring but also a lack of faith in your parenting. If your children are not responsible adults that know right from wrong by the time they are college aged then the fault is due to your failure as a parent. Those parents went completely overboard and completely destroyed any chance of a relationship with their daughter due to their actions and the lack of trust.

  They did cut her off. That’s a telling point of the story. The parents cut her off so the school gave her a full ride. Not many universities will do that unless there’s merit to her side of the story. They also hired security just to keep her parents out. The university has no motivation for doing either of those things. They both cost the school money.

  Actually, yes, if the devices were purchased and then gifted to her, installing spyware on the machines is felony eavesdropping, wiretapping, and hacking. Depending on what account information was intercepted, again if the devices were gifted to her or hers to begin with, then it could also constitute bank fraud, wire fraud, or international hacking.
  
  If the devices were considered to be the retained possession of the parents, and loaned to her, then there may be some room for the parents to escape the charges, but only to an extent. If, say, the devices were still considered the parents, and the daughter set up a bank account completely separate from the parents, and the parents used their spyware to intercept her login info and check her accounts, that is hacking and bank fraud (the latter, you are misrepresenting yourself in electronic form to a bank).
  
  Electronic privacy is a tricky minefield, all the more so when you are trying to be a control freak with someone else’s equipment.

  Depending on how they developed this information, yes. Privacy, eavesdropping, wiretapping, and stalking laws exist in this country for a reason. Parenting is one thing, social engineering is another, and espionage is not appropriate means.
  
  Again, read my first post. I deliberately said that the ownership of the device determines the legality of their actions, regardless of my opinion on the matter.

  @OhioRifleman I admire your conviction. You are right, but I’m a dad myself. I would DO ANYTHING to protect my daughter, even from herself. The need to protect my little girl is immense. I would never try to change the law to accommodate that, this is not the Middle East where it’s ok to stone your family if they go against you. With that said, Laws have A LOT of gray areas for LE & Fed. agencies to do the same thing we are discussing. Restricting Laws is not the answer I think.   I’m a father of three with my oldest daughter about to be a senior in H’s and there comes a point where you have to let them go. It’s just like when teaching them to ride a bike, if you don’t let go of it they’ll never learn to ride on their own. These parents couldn’t let go of the proverbial bike and now they have to suffer the consequences of their actions. If they’d have treated their daughter like the young adult they had hopefully raised her to be this would have been avoided.

oh lookie – yet another young girl who after going to college – rejects she parents.

I think we need more info on this. First off just because a judge and a school took her side means nothing. Alot of mental illnesses are fully accepted by the community at large!!

And the parents did go over board a little, but there is no details on why they were banned from the school performances, did they make noise or a scene? no details makes it hard to take sides.

I have lived near college towns, and I can tell you the kids are out of control, rapes occur regularly, bike theft on a weekly basis, roofie drugs are often used on girls just like her. it’s sad but when you try and warn the kids, they act like they are invincible and nothing bad will ever happen to them – naive.

I want to know what the parents found while watching her – I don’t care if she’s a straight “A” student as a singer/actor – big deal!! some of the worst crazy people in the world end up in hollywood so that is not a selling point at all!

If parents want to keep tabs on their children THEY ARE ENTITLED TO DO SO, don’t expect a Christmas gift though, for her to go to court over this … seems like she has MENTAL ISSUES. Big Gov. must step in and protect the BRILLIANT DAUGHTER from the STUPID PARENTS who only have her best interests in mind(*assumption based on being a parent and having BOTH). “Oh Ye without sin cast the first stone!” or something like that. The parents went way to far when they informed the dean of her program of her daughter’s “mental health” issues and that they may have to take her into treatment. Unless the daughter is failing her classes, missing school or her dormmates are reporting her to the Resident Assistant for mental health issues, then the parents need to but out of their daughter’s life.

  There’s enough info here to know if the girl wants an education, she should be paying for it herself and the parents should not. Since she is 21, she’s an adult- legally though not for Obamacare purposes- and has her own life to live sans parents.
