One Pound Fish Artist Muhammad Shahid Nazirs Video Goes Viral, Compared to Gangnam Style

Korean rapper Psy recently posted a record 1 billion YouTube views for his viral music video for “Gangnam Style” earlier this month. Now, the torch seems to have been passed to a Pakistani fishmonger who has become world’s next YouTube sensation.

Muhammad Shahid Nazir, whose videos for his song, “One Pound Fish,” have surpassed 16 million views on YouTube, has also landed himself a record deal with Warner Music and a popular song on iTunes.

Additionally, the people in Pakistan are so proud of Nazir that the country reportedly lifted its YouTube ban so citizens can watch “One Pound Fish” and celebrate his Internet stardom.

Business Insider explains how Nazir’s phenomenon of a song came about:

Nazir made up a song, “One Pound Fish,” which he sang to bait customers for the Upton Park market stall where he sold fish. Colin Miller, a British Web designer, filmed him nine months ago. But the video didn’t start going crazy until early December.

Now there’s an “o-fish-al” music video and Nazir’s returned to Pakistan, where he’s being celebrated for his global Internet pop-culture victory

He’s far from touching the record set in 2012 by Korean pop artist Psy, whose “Gangnam Style” beat out longtime champion Justin Bieber for the most-watched video on YouTube with 1 billion views.

As Business Insider also notes, the bizarre song and video provides more proof of the “transformative power” of YouTube to “disseminate mass culture globally in the blink of an eye.”

  WGAF…the entertainment industry is nothing but a bunch of 15 minute wonders anymore. I watched Space Cowboys with my wife last night. A movie filled with long time great actors. There will never be anymore of those. It’s a shame but true.

  That guy singing looks just lie the Imam I rented a room from back in the 80′s. He and his wife had an arranged marriage in their home country, Pakistan. I was in Hawthorne CA at the time. The next-door neighbors were from Pakistan also, but they were way more “traditional” and would not let their six year old daughter have any friends, so she always came over to talk to me. She really liked Barbie dolls, so I got her one for her birthday and her father made her return it to me. They invited me over in order to return it to me and gave me suspicious looks. But I just kind of felt bad for her because my own father, who was brought up in Iran, treated me like that when I was a little girl.

uh…Music is prohibited in Islam. It is haram to sing, and it is also prohibited to dance with women in Islam.

So if Pakistan is behind this guy….how is it called the ISLAMIC state of Pakistan?

This is just another mundane video with a few sexy girls. At least a few of the sight gags in Gangnam Style were almost witty and had a little more effort put into its production.

BTW, is that guy breaking UK law by selling fish by the pound rather than by a metric unit? A former coworker of mine told be that while UK people prefer to use English units, merchants are required to use metric and not use English units.

  It was a terrible video with really LOW production values. The soundtrack even STOLE one of the sounds from Psy’s song. Copycat. Also Ran. But FAIL because of so many reasons.

I am not a fan of Gangnam Style so I was hoping I would like this one but in my opinion this one is even worse. To me it looks like it was made specifically to be “the next Gangnam Style” but failed to realize Gangnam Style actually had some substance and just tried to copy the style…though failing at that as well.

The Gangnam Style video is fun to watch (if I tried to dance like that I’d dislocate a hip!), But once I read this new video is a Pakistani version, I decided I didn’t need to watch it. Yes, Psy of Gangnam Style may have spouted anti-American nasty-ness, I’d rather watch a Korean dance to a catchy tune than watch a Pakistani do anything. Sorry, anyone can call me a racists or whatever. But nothing good comes from Pakistan. (Go ahead, disagree with me. Wanna fight about it?)

  You didn’t miss out to much; Gangnam style is vastly better. And as for the part about Psy being anti-american; that was quite some time ago, and it was a popular sentiment at the time in South Korea. He was also a lot younger, and not many go through life without making some seriously stupid mistakes. He did apologize for it, and I personally don’t see a reason to not forgive him. Everyone says idiotic things at some point and most regret such statements later.
