Hobby Lobby: Go Ahead and Fine Us, We Won’t Comply With ‘Morning-After’ Mandate
Despite the fact that it could result in fines of up to $1.3 million per day, an attorney for Hobby Lobby Stores announced Thursday the company’s plan to ignore a federal mandate requiring all employers provide employees with health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill.
“Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel Inc., which are owned by the same conservative Christian family, are suing to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills,” the Associated Press notes.
“The companies claim the mandate violates the religious beliefs of their owners. They say the morning-after pill is tantamount to abortion because it can prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in a woman’s womb,” the report adds.
And although Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor “denied the companies’ request for an injunction while their lawsuit is pending,” as the AP notes, she explained that the companies may challenge the new health regulation in lower courts.
Hobby Lobby is being represented by Kyle Duncan of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.
“Hobby Lobby doesn’t intend to offer its employees insurance that would cover the drug while its lawsuit is pending,” Duncan said in a statement.
“The company will continue to provide health insurance to all qualified employees,” Duncan said. “To remain true to their faith, it is not their intention, as a company, to pay for abortion-inducing drugs.”
U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton last month in a ruling against the companies said churches and religious groups are protected from the birth-control provisions but that “Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations.”

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 6:47pmWe have split religion so far away from ordinary life. Education used to include morality and values. One’s occupation, and reputation therein, was the result of one’s Christian character. Courts used to require for one to swear on the Holy Bible. Today we have created this small box wherein we place God, and therein he must remain. And outside of that box, we can not speak of him, speak to him, or even acknowledge him. Our founding fathers would have never tolerated such nonsense.

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 12:56pmI have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:34
The Christian will be sure to make enemies. It will be one of his objects to make none; but if doing what is right and believing what is true should cause him to lose every earthly friend, he will regard it as a small loss, since his great Friend in heaven will be even more friendly and will reveal Himself to him more graciously than ever. You who have taken up His cross, don’t you know what your Master said? “I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother …And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.”
Christ is the great Peacemaker; but before peace, He brings war. Where the light comes, the darkness must vanish. Where truth is, the lie must flee; or if it remains, there must be a stern conflict, for the truth cannot and will not lower its standard, and the lie must be trampled underfoot. If you follow Christ, you will have all the dogs of the world yelping at your heels. If you live in such a manner as to stand the test of the last judgment, you can depend upon it that the world will not speak well of you.
He who has the friendship of the world is an enemy to God; but if you are true and faithful to the Most High, men will resent your uncompromising commitment, since it is a testimony against their iniquities. You must do the right thing and not fear the consequences. You will need the courage of a lion to pursue a course that turns your best friend into

Since when is religious freedom reserved only to organizations. Freedom of religion, association, and speech are individual rights. What they are saying is we can’t hold all three at the same time.
We need to support Hobby Lobby who are merely exercising their freedom of religion, association and speech simultaneously.
This issue exposes the tyranny of the state like no other. In addition I’m sure these fines cannot stand as they violate the equal protection clause. Federal taxes are meant to be uniform. Giving the federal government the ability to directly tax was a huge mistake.

No one is being “forced” into anything.
The “owner” owns the company. He started it in his garage with his family. David Green is his name.
http://www.hobbylobby.com/our_company/our_company.cfm
Likely [as with most businesses] the beginnings were sometimes rough. Most businesses struggle in the beginning. They likely worked LONG hours 24/7 and sacrificed much to get it off the ground. That probably lasted for years until the business began to bear fruit and grow.
Employees on the other hand are paid workers. They get a wage and benefits in exchange for their labor. They arent owners. They have no official say in company direction or strategy. They werent there in that living room struggling and sacrificing 24/7 for all that time in the beginning.
Employees who dont like the decision are absolutely FREE to find employment ELSEWHERE..

To them, the morning after pill is the same as abortion, which is MURDER OF INNOCENT BABIES…If you owned a business, and tomorrow the government DEMANDED that every time a down syndrome child came into your store, you have to give their parent some arsenic to kill the child or face a 1.3 million dollar fine, what would you do? It really is that simple. The “law of the land” is that murder of babies is not only allowed, but now this law is FORCING business owners to be an accomplice.
Would YOUR business mean so much to you that you would become an accomplice to MURDER just to keep the doors open and your people employed?

If Hobby Lobby is allowed to life by their owners’ religions – a Constitutional right – they will continue to do great business.
It will be the government who forces them to close, if they do; not the owners.
Your sense of “a business must do whatever the government requests, regardless of their beliefs and regardless of Constitutional rights,” is misplaced.
Put the blame where it belongs – on President Obama and his lackey Sotomayor, not on Hobby Lobby.

The drug you mention does not prevent fertilization unless taken well before ovulation. Conception usually takes place in the fallopian tube within a day of intercourse. What makes this drug an abortifacient is that it makes the endometrium a hostile environment for the 5-8 day old human embryo, preventing it from implanting and obtaining nutrients and thereby causing it to die. A life conceived is killed.

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 2:19pmHobby Lobby needs to rethink it’s own business strategy as so many American business are doing right now.
We are a nation being driven into decline along with Europe, and our gober’ment is our enemy in this regard. “All enemies foreign and DOMESTIC” has little meaning today. These massive, intrusive laws and regulations are meant to destroy us. Those who don’t comply will be eliminated like HL. The result will be a U.S.S.A (united socialist states of america).
Americans have always been bred to feel like we should fight and die to preserve our freedoms (and freedoms of others), but we have been timid too long, and put off action until it may be too late! We have allowed the socialist philosophy to spread like a cancer. So many freedoms have already been lost and so many more will be gone in the next few years…. I wonder if at some point it will become futile and escape will be the only answer?
The good news is that freedom is still alive and thriving in some places around the world. It may be time for HL and a few hardy souls to join ‘John Galt’ someplace like Chile. Do some research.
From Soverignman.com:
“…In May 2012, there were only 4 or 5 Papa John’s locations in all of Chile. Today, just six months later, there are 13…” Papa John gets it. ….rf

If I were them, I’d begin the process to close all the stores I have nation-wide. The unemployed can thank they President they voted for.
If Wal-Mart had any moral convictions like they did when Sam Walton lived, Obamacare would have never passed.

Just wait until they mandate that catholic hospitals MUST provide abortion services, and that individual OBGYNs MUST provide abortion services. Its on its way. Posted on December 28, 2012 at 12:01pmTeresa… As far as you are concerned sums it up. When proceedings occur that find this law unconstutional then and only then should they change it. Did anyone complain about the patriot act which took away everyones’s privacy? Or does it only matter when it is a liberal gov that does it? I actually think that the right to bear arms is just that. A right. It should not be repealed. However limiting people to a certain amount of weapons as well as stricter guidelines for people wanting certain types of firearms is needed. You should have to pass psyche and special training in order to get them. I didnt refuse to pay taxes when the bush adm. Declared an unconstitutional war against iraq. Why make the soldiers suffer because i disagree? My president decided to go to war. Whether i agree or disagree doesnt matter.

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 2:15pmThe law is IMMORAL. Requiring an individual or a company to subsidize or provide abortion services for the taking of innocent human life can never be justified. If they took out the birth control part and the abortion services part there would not be this problem. This is simply an end run around the governmental prohibitions against funding abortion. Since the government can’t do it, it’ll just order the citizens under force of law to do it.

Do you mind if Obama has sent troops to many different countries without the approval of Congress? You should care about everything the president does that takes away any right of the people. This and several other provisions of Obamacare are truly is an affront to what Christians should hold dear.
Sadly, too many Christmas-and-Easter “christians” (notice the small c) are too far away from their beliefs to realize they’ve lost track of where they should be to keep in line with God’s will.
…and before encinom chimes in…
Christians are all about helping the poor and infirm, but doing it of their own free will. Christian churches are more chairtable than almost any secular group in the country.
Afterall, charity is only charity when it’s not mandated.

Why not demand employees provide receipts for all purchases of any kind so corporate can make certain their employees are spending what used to be their money in a company approved fashion. This isn’t about religious freedom, this is about religious imposition.
