Hobby Lobby: Go Ahead and Fine Us, We Won’t Comply With ‘Morning-After’ Mandate

Attorney: Hobby Lobby Wont Offer Morning After Pill

(AP)

Despite the fact that it could result in fines of up to $1.3 million per day, an attorney for Hobby Lobby Stores announced Thursday the company’s plan to ignore a federal mandate requiring all employers provide employees with health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill.

“Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel Inc., which are owned by the same conservative Christian family, are suing to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills,” the Associated Press notes.

“The companies claim the mandate violates the religious beliefs of their owners. They say the morning-after pill is tantamount to abortion because it can prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in a woman’s womb,” the report adds.

And although Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor “denied the companies’ request for an injunction while their lawsuit is pending,” as the AP notes, she explained that the companies may challenge the new health regulation in lower courts.

Hobby Lobby is being represented by Kyle Duncan of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

“Hobby Lobby doesn’t intend to offer its employees insurance that would cover the drug while its lawsuit is pending,” Duncan said in a statement.

“The company will continue to provide health insurance to all qualified employees,” Duncan said. “To remain true to their faith, it is not their intention, as a company, to pay for abortion-inducing drugs.”

U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton last month in a ruling against the companies said churches and religious groups are protected from the birth-control provisions but that “Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations.”

The sheep do lead the sheep. Where is the room in a “low-information” voter’s brain? It is so full of “professional” sports, celebrity gossip, video game strategy, Facebook, and the like, the truth has no room. As long as a person’s personal comfort zone is not invaded, the hard stuff that requires critical thinking will not rate a blip on the radar.

We have split religion so far away from ordinary life. Education used to include morality and values. One’s occupation, and reputation therein, was the result of one’s Christian character. Courts used to require for one to swear on the Holy Bible. Today we have created this small box wherein we place God, and therein he must remain. And outside of that box, we can not speak of him, speak to him, or even acknowledge him. Our founding fathers would have never tolerated such nonsense.

Why are employers forced into the business of providing health insurance in the first place?

The Green’s are doing the only thing they should do and are fully willing to be persecuted into destruction by the government if need be.

I will not comply means what it says and my guess is they won’t voluntarily pay the fines either.

I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
      Matthew 10:34

The Christian will be sure to make enemies. It will be one of his objects to make none; but if doing what is right and believing what is true should cause him to lose every earthly friend, he will regard it as a small loss, since his great Friend in heaven will be even more friendly and will reveal Himself to him more graciously than ever. You who have taken up His cross, don’t you know what your Master said? “I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother …And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.”

Christ is the great Peacemaker; but before peace, He brings war. Where the light comes, the darkness must vanish. Where truth is, the lie must flee; or if it remains, there must be a stern conflict, for the truth cannot and will not lower its standard, and the lie must be trampled underfoot. If you follow Christ, you will have all the dogs of the world yelping at your heels. If you live in such a manner as to stand the test of the last judgment, you can depend upon it that the world will not speak well of you.

He who has the friendship of the world is an enemy to God; but if you are true and faithful to the Most High, men will resent your uncompromising commitment, since it is a testimony against their iniquities. You must do the right thing and not fear the consequences. You will need the courage of a lion to pursue a course that turns your best friend into

      Indeed, they need our support.
Since when is religious freedom reserved only to organizations. Freedom of religion, association, and speech are individual rights. What they are saying is we can’t hold all three at the same time.
We need to support Hobby Lobby who are merely exercising their freedom of religion, association and speech simultaneously.
This issue exposes the tyranny of the state like no other. In addition I’m sure these fines cannot stand as they violate the equal protection clause. Federal taxes are meant to be uniform. Giving the federal government the ability to directly tax was a huge mistake.

Great man cave decor there too. There are several oil/ gas station related signs there as well as car signs and decor. One of the neatest things I saw, when I was there yesterday, was a door pull (think closet or dresser) that was shaped like the old car door handles in the 60s and 70s. Likely [as with most businesses] the beginnings were sometimes rough. Most businesses struggle in the beginning. They likely worked LONG hours 24/7 and sacrificed much to get it off the ground. That probably lasted for years until the business began to bear fruit and grow.

Employees on the other hand are paid workers. They get a wage and benefits in exchange for their labor. They arent owners. They have no official say in company direction or strategy. They werent there in that living room struggling and sacrificing 24/7 for all that time in the beginning.

The company seems to be doing business as usual, prospering and providing good jobs and benefits for it’s employees. The gov’t has upset the apple cart by overbearing regulations. Let’s keep the blame where it belongs. The company did not ask for the controversy, they are victims.

Yes of course you are a troll. True children of God believe interfering with the creation of life is something only our creator has the right to manipulate after conception has occurred. Using methods to destroy this life after the fact is a very bad sin and tantamount to murder. Only self defense or in the defense of others or the homeland can this tenet be violated. People wishing to work there can abide by this. All those who have no conscience about the taking of life or the violating of a living souls future can answer alone in judgement. In short speaking for all true children of God bite our shiny metal a55es.

Yet another major employer has been destroyed by the Godless forces of darkness running this nation since this money drain will destroy them. Nothing new, these forces are destroying us all.

Standing up for your convictions and not giving into a Govn’t you feel is becoming morally and constitutionally unjust is not dumb, it is American. Americans don’t take crap on the jaw and ask please, sir, can I have some more. We stand up for ourselves and make a stand. Like in Atlas Shrugged, ‘I am leaving it as I found it. Take over. It’s yours.’ The Govn’t has NO RIGHT to be so invasive in telling people how to run their business and I am in full support in Hobby Lobby standing up for their rights in such a fashion.

      FREE_THOUGHT…

To them, the morning after pill is the same as abortion, which is MURDER OF INNOCENT BABIES…If you owned a business, and tomorrow the government DEMANDED that every time a down syndrome child came into your store, you have to give their parent some arsenic to kill the child or face a 1.3 million dollar fine, what would you do? It really is that simple. The “law of the land” is that murder of babies is not only allowed, but now this law is FORCING business owners to be an accomplice.

Would YOUR business mean so much to you that you would become an accomplice to MURDER just to keep the doors open and your people employed?

Free, by what stretch of the imagination is Hobby Lobby going to be “forcing 13000 employees into financial ruin” by refusing to pay for their abortifacients?

If Hobby Lobby is allowed to life by their owners’ religions – a Constitutional right – they will continue to do great business.

It will be the government who forces them to close, if they do; not the owners.

Your sense of “a business must do whatever the government requests, regardless of their beliefs and regardless of Constitutional rights,” is misplaced.

Put the blame where it belongs – on President Obama and his lackey Sotomayor, not on Hobby Lobby.

It seems the problem lies in the fact that many people believe that certain kinds of rights are less valid than others. They are not. These people have the right to act according to their religious beliefs.

Rights are not distributed by the government. Some laws are immoral. People have the right to act accordingly. I can disagree but I would never assume to say one’s rights are less real or actionable than mine.

So vote with your dollars. If you disagree with their moral stance, never darken their door or become an employee. Simple.

G.E.R. I suggest you take a course in embryology, as your current understanding is grossly over-rated. The drug you mention does not prevent fertilization unless taken well before ovulation. Conception usually takes place in the fallopian tube within a day of intercourse. What makes this drug an abortifacient is that it makes the endometrium a hostile environment for the 5-8 day old human embryo, preventing it from implanting and obtaining nutrients and thereby causing it to die. A life conceived is killed.

Hobby Lobby needs to rethink it’s own business strategy as so many American business are doing right now.

We are a nation being driven into decline along with Europe, and our gober’ment is our enemy in this regard. “All enemies foreign and DOMESTIC” has little meaning today. These massive, intrusive laws and regulations are meant to destroy us. Those who don’t comply will be eliminated like HL. The result will be a U.S.S.A (united socialist states of america).

Americans have always been bred to feel like we should fight and die to preserve our freedoms (and freedoms of others), but we have been timid too long, and put off action until it may be too late! We have allowed the socialist philosophy to spread like a cancer. So many freedoms have already been lost and so many more will be gone in the next few years…. I wonder if at some point it will become futile and escape will be the only answer?

The good news is that freedom is still alive and thriving in some places around the world. It may be time for HL and a few hardy souls to join ‘John Galt’ someplace like Chile. Do some research.

      From Soverignman.com:
“…In May 2012, there were only 4 or 5 Papa John’s locations in all of Chile. Today, just six months later, there are 13…” Papa John gets it. ….rf

Did anyone complain about the patriot act which took away everyones’s privacy? Or does it only matter when it is a liberal gov that does it? I actually think that the right to bear arms is just that. A right. It should not be repealed. However limiting people to a certain amount of weapons as well as stricter guidelines for people wanting certain types of firearms is needed. You should have to pass psyche and special training in order to get them. I didnt refuse to pay taxes when the bush adm. Declared an unconstitutional war against iraq. Why make the soldiers suffer because i disagree? My president decided to go to war. Whether i agree or disagree doesnt matter.

The law is IMMORAL. Requiring an individual or a company to subsidize or provide abortion services for the taking of innocent human life can never be justified. If they took out the birth control part and the abortion services part there would not be this problem. This is simply an end run around the governmental prohibitions against funding abortion. Since the government can’t do it, it’ll just order the citizens under force of law to do it.

Sadly, too many Christmas-and-Easter “christians” (notice the small c) are too far away from their beliefs to realize they’ve lost track of where they should be to keep in line with God’s will.

Christians are all about helping the poor and infirm, but doing it of their own free will. Christian churches are more chairtable than almost any secular group in the country.

jerk-water ‘law’ (signed by one party) that comes down the pike? NO PRIVATE company should be forced to do something they oppose ethically. The US GOV is very wrong and I applaud HOBBY LOBBY for their stand. I will support them any way I can.

You do not have to follow an unconstitutional law idiot!

Obamacare is unconstitutional, along with forcing someone to act against their conscience. Obama and half of America are already “not following the law.” When “law” becomes a dictatorship violating basic human rights established in our Constitution, it’s our duty to defy it by any means possible.

@freethought I hope the good people at Hobby Lobby continue to pay their employees and don’t pay the fines. Let your dictator Obama send some ObamaZombies to padlock the doors at Hobby Lobby. It will then be clear who the villian is… an overreaching government with a bunch of something for nothing ObamaZombies in lockstep behind their dictator. Let the ObamaZombie Apocalyse begin! I am ready…

      @ Marine

I say that is their right, just like I have a right to find another job.

I go into Hobby Lobby for ribbon and walk out with 200.00 worth of stuff. They have everything. Want to build model airplanes? They have them. Tomato trellises? Got it, Yarn, material, kids crafts, you name it. AND they honor Our Lord by being closed on Sundays.

@Freethought – Some people stand higher on the principle ladder, than you obviously do. FWIW, they built that company. They can tear it down, should they so desire. That is not your concern. Their employess will suffer, while they try to find new jobs. But, they will find new jobs.

Once you give up your principles, you will never get them back. Once you give up your freedom, you will never see it again, in your lifetime.

@Free_Thought, and violate their faith to keep working at the will of the State? Why? Is the purpose of Hobby Lobby to provide jobs? If you suddenly found your line of work required you to do something morally reprehensible, is it not your right to quit, or should one keep doing morally reprehensible actions because the Central Autocratic Authority and their sycophantic fascist thugs think your work might be beneficial to their overall scheme?

Just FYI. Hobby Lobby does a great job of framing stuff. I’ve had diplomas and certificates framed there and the price is right and everyone of them looks fantastic.

I highly recommend this place and admire the stand they’re taking.

We don’t have a Hobby Lobby here that I know about. Would support them if we did! (gee, time to take out the rubber stamps and fun scissors again!)

How many businesses will go bankrupt or be forced to close their doors because of Obamacare? How many jobs to our economy will be lost because of this monstrously unconstitutional piece of garbage that none of our lawmakers have read?
