Last-Minute ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Meeting Ends in Silence, Obama ‘Modestly Optimistic’

President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) met for a last-minute meeting Friday to negotiate a deal to avert the quickly-approaching “fiscal cliff,” a combination of tax increases and deep spending cuts set to take effect next year unless Congress comes up with a budget plan.

The meeting broke up at about 4:14 p.m. ET. Everyone left in silence:

Based on the fact that both Sen. Reid and Rep. Boehner declined to comment on the details of the meeting, it’s probably safe to assume that neither side is any closer to getting what it wants. President Obama offered nothing new, according to Reuters, and an aide with Boehner’s office said the Speaker will not be returning to the Capitol today.

Indeed, it would appear that the only thing accomplished by today’s meeting is that Senate leadership was told to get its act together by House leaders:

Shortly after the meeting broke up, President Obama held a press conference to say that he is “mildly optimistic” that a deal can be reached.

“I’m modestly optimistic that a — an agreement can be achieved,” the president said. “Nobody’s going to get 100 percent of what they want but let’s make sure that middle-class families and the American economy, and in fact, the world economy aren’t adversely impacted because people can’t do their jobs.”

President Obama made sure to voice his displeasure with Congress.

“Ordinary folks, they do their jobs. They meet deadlines. They sit down and discuss things and then things happen,” said the president.

“It there are disagreements they sort through the disagreements. The notion that our elected leadership can’t do the same thing is mind-boggling to them. It needs to stop,” he added:

Members of Congress will meet Sunday to try one last time to negotiate a deal both parties can agree on:

No negotiations on Sunday morning because everyone’s on television. So we have Saturday, Sunday afternoon-evening, then New Year’s Eve.

  Obama wants Reid to pass a temporary bill if an agreement cannot be reached, just kicking the can again, the temporary bill will include unemployment for 2 million , keep Bush tax cuts for those making less than 250k and the ability to keep spending until an agreement can be reached or in other words he is waiting until the dems control congress again then he will bury America.   The problem here is the Senate cannot make appropriations bill, it is in the Constitution that the House has to make this kind of bill. What is happening is the basic destruction of the Constitution because Bonehead should never have been in direct negotiations with obummer. The House makes the bill, the Senate says yes or no, commitees reconcile the bill, and then send it to obummer for a yes or no. End of story and TV drama.

  @skimmer57 You’re an idiot. Those tax breaks also included a reduction in inheritance taxes. Starting in 2013, small family farms, who hold very valuable pieces of land, but are not remotely rich, will be devastated by these new tax increases. This means that if a father has reached his old age, and desires to pass on the family crop business, his child, before receiving any land title, would have to pay about 50% in taxes. Tell me how the hell will a family, barely making ends meet, be able to pass on a farm, valued at say 3 million dollars, to their son, if the son must first pay 1.5 million in taxes? These farms will close down, and food prices will go up. These same freaking Progressives will also raise taxes on those making $250,000 a year. Most individuals making around that much are owners of small business. They are not “millionaires”. They don’t file taxes as a corporation, but as private citizens. That $250,000 includes expenses for their lease, employees, fixes, supplies, etc. They don’t pocket $250,000. Now, what the hell do you think these small business owners will have to do to make up for the loss in money? They sure as hell won’t be hiring more or increasing wages. So, how about you go back to lala land, and turn on Madcow. That lonely loudmouth needs more viewers.

  Sorry to say it but it’s time for Boehner to give in. I understand that taxing the job providers is bad but EVERYONE’S taxes going up – even the poor, is just insane if we go over the cliff. I for one cannot afford an increase $1800/yr tax bill as someone in the middle class and will most likely be thrown in jail or whatever because I simply cannnot pay. Lots of Americans are in the same boat with raise freezes and myriad struggles in this economy since ’08. Obama wants us to go over the fiscal cliff so Boehner has to be the one to concede. Please do what’s right for 2/3 of America Boehner and don’t throw everyone under the bus because Obama won’t give in re: the wealthy. Please!

  I have no answer Valient. Nothing is right about it but it will do not good to not reach an agreement. Obama is hell-bent on taxing the wealthy and he will not let it go. I don’t want us “little people” to have to pay because Boehner stuck with protecting those who make over 400K – who will have to pay anyway so what choice is there. Evil Prez has him over a barrel…

  The 250K for small business is their net income(Receipts – Cost of goods – Expenses). There is about 1.9% of small business that will be impacted by repeal of Bush tax cuts for rich. Half of them are not small businessmen but investors in small business. In reality it impacts about 1% of small business.
  
  If the top rates goes up then a small business owner making net income of $500,000 would see an increase of about $5,000 in taxes. The Bush tax cuts were temporary ones because we had a surplus but now we have a huge deficit. We cannot afford give tax cuts to everyone and increase our debt.

  The temporary tax cuts which given when we had surplus, we cannot afford it any more. We have to go back to old rate in stages. Also, we have to reduce our spending and bring it down to at least 22% of our GDP. We had 1T in spending cuts last year, now we need a couple (2T) more next year.

  GDP peaked in 2000 thanks to the dotcom boom.
  Our population is living longer
  Rising healthcare cost (it was 113% from 1999-2009).
  
  We have to reduce our spending down to 22% of GDP and increase our revenue to 18.5% of GDP (Reaganomics).

This meeting like all the others initated by our (ahem) pres is just theater…plain and simple..He cuts his vacation short to ride in wearing his white hat to save the day creating the illusion of trying to make a deal..(illusion is all they are good at!) and offers crap no one in their right mind would go for in hopes we go over the “cliff” (which is what they want) then can blame the GOP thereby cementing a win of the House for dems in the midterms where the true demise of America can be realized…Our pres is the worst piece of crap ever elected!! (yes he,s got woodrow wilson beat hands down) Our options in this case are very limited In other words no matter what we do we will be demonized!! As I,ve said before we need to reveal to the general public the lame stream media as the lap dogs of the progressives if we ever wish to get our country back to sanity!!! How? I,m open to any suggestions.

The problem is that Obama has never been an executive in real life, and doesn’t know how to handle the “job”. Whether running a Country or a Company, the executive LISTENS to expert advice, and makes a decision based on the expert advice.

Obama thinks that he is a King, and merely has to state what he wants, and expects ALL to do his will.

  Thats exactly what is being done. you see the expert advice is raise taxes to create more revenue so we can stop paying for everything with a credit card, and continue to help rebuild our economy. just like we rebuilt Germany, Japan, and currently Iraq and afghanistan. the rebuilding process takes money obviously. but the ends justify the means! or we can keep taxes low. spend no money on the economy. and be Greece, up the creek without a paddle by 2030.

Dear Congressman, I respectfully request that impeachment proceedings and treason charges be brought against the President as soon as possible for his actions in Libya (a fast and furious-like gun running scheme to al-qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood) and also charges that he violated his Oath of Office during his 30-minute speech at the UN General Assembly, 9/25/12, at the following points in time: 10:16, 13:16, and 15:08, in which he blamed a “Youtube video” for the events that transpired in Benghazi on 9/11/12. The President needs to be reprimanded for that speech and he needs to understand that even if the Youtube video was indeed the cause of violence in Beghazi, that the video is actually fully protected under the US Constitution. Thank you.

No, no they are doing something, to spur the economy and increase gun sales they are freaking everyone out with Feinstein’s Bill. Plus, if all the guns get made into NFA, $200 per gun, wow, we could support the federal govt. for almost a week, assuming everyone follows in line and the shooting doesn’t begin. Ironically, putting everyones back next to a cliff, with guns out, hmm, no insane imagery there….

Screw thse backroom deals. Bring in the cameras and let’s put these socialists on camera. Let us see the crappy deals they are trying to push through. Keep that POS, obama, out of the deal. He is a deal breaker and does not give a dam* about the American economy. Barry wants higher taxes so he can redistribute them to his cronies. Problem is, he is an idiot when he chooses who gets the money.

  “Barry’s” Problem is that he’s not going to get the revenue they are looking for just ask New York Governor before Cuomo when he enacted a millionaires tax, they moved to Florida and Texas. And there are some Billionaires that have denounced their US Citizenship to avoid the taxes imposed even when you live outside the country in a foreign country for a foreign Company.

Take and eat the fiscal-cliff pill, bitter though it may be, it’s better than the suppository administered by Obama’s Chinese masters at the point of a bayonet/sword/pen is – mightier than the sword.

None of them want a solution. Their plan is for the fiscal cliff moment to happen so they can have a crisis that won’t go to waste. No one who is paying attention expected any other outcome than this.
