Man Suspected of Stalking Ex Shot Dead After Overpowering Officer, Stealing Gun and Shooting 3 Cops

(AP) — A man who had been arrested for allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend overpowered an officer inside a police station, grabbed her gun and shot her and two other officers before being killed by police early Friday, authorities said.

All three wounded officers were expected to recover.

Eddie Jones III, 39, of Willingboro, overpowered Officer Ruth Burns inside the station in Gloucester Township, a Philadelphia suburb, police said. He fired at her and two officers who had been in a nearby room and came rushing to aid their colleague. The two officers fired on Jones, killing him.

“This morning, the reality of a cruel world fell upon our doorstep,” said Mayor David Mayer. “We thank God our officers are expected to fully recover.”

Sgt. James Garber was shot multiple times and underwent emergency surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen; his life was saved by a bulletproof vest. He also suffered a graze wound to the head.

Sgt. Kevin Thine suffered a laceration to his abdomen and a graze wound to the chin. Burns was shot in the foot.

Jones, a civilian employee of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, had been arrested for stalking the home of a former girlfriend after a caller told police they saw a suspicious man lurking at about 1 a.m.

He was brought back to police headquarters and when his handcuffs were removed for a brief period during processing, he lunged at Burns, knocking her down and taking her weapon, police Chief Harry Earle said.

The suspect “unleashed a barrage of gunfire” at the officers, Earle said. Jones was struck multiple times by return fire and was pronounced dead at the scene, the chief said.

The shooting will be reviewed by the state attorney general, as is customary with all shootings involving police officers. But Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk said initial evidence shows that the officers responded to gunfire that was initiated by the suspect, and returned fire to save their lives and those of other officers in the building.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

Dammn good thing there wasn’t any Gun control in that police station…….Or we would have 9 dead cops.

Let a woman cop escort a large male stalker by herself……You know some of us in the world use that badge as a target.

Why would there be an uncuffed prisoner with an officer that was in possession of their weapon

Chancellor, first of all, what do you mean by “some of us use that badge as a target”? Are you claiming that you target cops? Now you have the possible attention of the police for that comment. Second of all, regarding your first comment of gun control in the police station: if there was gun control the cop wouldn’t have had one either, and the shooting wouldn’t have happened in this case. I am not advocating gun control or disarming the police, I am just showing that this poster is potentially not thinking properly.

Oh my God it’s like dealing with children. here’s the comment again ‘Dammn good thing there wasn’t any Gun control in that police station…….Or we would have 9 dead cops.’

If all the cops are dead, then presumably – in this alternate universe – the cops don’t have guns either, so the question still stands ‘…….where exactly would this guy have got the gun from????’

guz75 before you jump down the throats of people responding to your statement. Remember you know what you meant, but your statement did not equate to what you meant. We are not mind readers and could not possibly know what you meant.

So you think cops should not have guns in the police station, thus the guy would never have been able to acquire the gun from the officer he knocked down and shoot the three officers. True. However, if our police should not be armed then you must at all cost eliminate guns from criminals first. Until that happens, police must remain armed. I also agree she should not have been left alone with a stalker. They are unstable people to begin with. Any man who thinks he “owns” a female is not in his right minds and should be assumed dangerous. He should have been handcuffed to a desk or other sturdy object and fingerprints taken on the other hand, then reverse the process.

Apparently, yougottabekidding you watch to much TV. They don’t wear suits and have their gun strapped under there coats like detectives on TV shows.

Arresting officers usually are gun carrying officers and most have their guns strapped to their belts with the gun strap securing it in the holster. Remember, she was pushed down, thus the holster was not protected plus he was a corrections officer who knows how to use a gun.

Wow I’m so glad you correct and explain every thing to me. I did not realize LEO carries his weapon on his belt. Who even said anything about carry position?
You apparently have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Common sense rules
If the prisoner was being moved he should have been cuffed behind or shackled.
The officer should NOT have been in possession of her firearm with an unsecured prisoner.
He should have been on her weak side so the weapon would be available with strong hand, and the weapon in most cases would have been covered by her body if she went to the ground making it less likely to get in his possession.
But thank you for your insight!

Senator Feinstein immediately rushed to the nearest TV news camera to declare she would submit legislation on the first day of Congress to limit police officers to 6-shot revolvers, specifically percussion (or possibly even flintlock revolvers as the gender-neutral “founders” intended) to prevent this from EVER happening again.

The parallel here is much like the mental health system is largely to blame for the tragedy in CT, liberal efforts to make the police social workers instead of cops is also to blame here.

Is it because of the CT shooting we’re now being inundated with gun related crimes. Is the media (including FoxNews and The Blaze, plus the a.b.c.’s) in cohoots with the federal government to push the second amendment out and disarm the law abiding American Citizen? Is this a concerted effort? I don’t usually fall for the tin-foil hat conspiracy theories, but things lately have really made me think maybe there is some truth to conspiracy by the government and the media to disarm and discredit the American gun owner. If it is true, we are in for one heck of a long haul of ugliness.

Agreed serveral people could have been kiied today because this woman was over powered and lost control of her weapon. Obviously not all men are of the same strength so while it could have happen to another male officer, the chances are much higher with a female officer, not worth the risk for all involved.
