Surprised? Current U.S. Congress Will Likely Go Down in History as Most Unproductive Since 1940s

Current U.S. Congress Will Likely Go Down in History as Most Unproductive Since 1940s

U.S. Congress isn’t exactly known for its efficiency, but the current Congress has been so unproductive during its tenure that it will likely go down in history as the most unproductive in almost a lifetime.

The Huffington Posts’ Amanda Terkel reports that current Congress has passed only 219 bills so far this session. And with just a week left in 2012, it will almost certainly win the uncovered distinction.

The 104th Congress (1995-1996) currently holds the ignominious distinction of being the least productive session of Congress, according to the U.S. House Clerk’s Office, which has records going back to 1947. Just 333 bills became law during that two-year period, meaning the 112th Congress needs to send nearly 100 more bills to Obama’s desk in the next few days if it wants to avoid going down in history — an unlikely prospect, considering that both chambers are squarely focused on averting the “fiscal cliff” before the new year.

The news comes on the same day that leaders in Congress failed to strike a meaningful deal to avert the looming “fiscal cliff.” President Barack Obama on Friday said he was “modestly optimistic” that leaders would come together and agree on a plan. Maybe he shouldn’t be.

Are you surprised at all?

If “productive” means passing a destructive liberal bill like Obamacare, I’ll take “unproductive” any day. That said, I hate to admit – Boehner needs to cave and compromise regarding the fiscal cliff. I can’t afford the increased taxes. Can’t afford to live now as it is.

Oldguy. the goal of Obama and the democrats is to raise taxes on the top 2% of Americans by 4.6%.. so the government can finally have some revenue that isn’t borrowed. not on all of us who can not afford it! Obama and the senate has been trying to pass legislation insuring no tax increase for the bottom 98% separate from the fiscal cliff debate.. but your boys in the house continue to block it! but whats more important? the people’s welfare? or continuing to try to make Obama fail?

      Are you serious man !
Let me share share a few numbers with you . The proposed tax revenue brought in by Obamas plan increasing taxes over $250,000 will bring in $50 Billion total next year , $500 Billion over 10 years. The government takes in about $5 Billion a day , but at current level of spending is spending $11 Billion a day . That means a deficit of $6 Billion a day , another way to look at it is it will take Obama and the Progressives in our government 9 days to spend all of that tax increase you want for next year. If you are going to make a comment try and get the facts first .

Their goal is not only to destroy capitalism (which does need some tweaking), it’s ridding of all Americans and rewriting history as if Americans never existed. That’s why they don’t want you to have guns to protect yourself. They are using the lame excuse of the Sandy incident when the mother just should have had her guns respectably locked up in gun cabinet and therefore her son would have just used knives or his fist instead. Then maybe they would be banning knives and your own fist…. and still guns.

Yeah who says we want the government’s so-called “progress”? if it were really progress that benefited everyone, it would be great. So far the only progress i’ve seen is the worst spending records in history, so just stop what you are doing! Quit your job and go make your own business. Once you see how bad your ideas are by failing in your business miserably, maybe you’ll learn to listen to your people a lil bit more instead of your ‘click’. Atleast they’re biding us some time, while the libs are forced to devise all kinds of other ways to screw up our fragile economy.

nope, not all people. That’s the problem, pbo’s administration makes plans that only benefit certain groups. You’re acting like their ideas are for the good of all XD they most certainly are not bud. All tax-payers are hurt regardless of taxing, because their is no talk about cutting SPENDING. Our money is becoming worthless because it isn’t being properly pumped BACK INTO the economy, it’s being sent here then their then used for this and a little of that and hopefully you’ll get almost all of it back. But it won’t be worth as much when you finally do, not to mention it might not even be as much as you expected it to be. Our country is dying and every single fiscal decision Obama and his adm. have made have been disastrous in my mind. I mean unemployment might be a little better, but that doesn’t make too much of a difference when the lower end jobs give you the same low@ss min wage and the monetary value of that pay is worth less and less as time goes on. We have a big time poverty problem and the only way to fix it is to give us back our money so we can feel secure again. Then you’ll see a hellova lot more charity donations, not redistribution of wealth. I mean what’s better to you? People giving because they sincerely care about others that can’t take care of themselves or govn’t taking more and more of your money to give to people that do need it and some that could do without it but still take it.

To some that is a good thing. The less they do they less they can mess up. BUT that also means that the “machine” of being ruled by bureaucrat, regulations and administrators is activated and can work without any new controls from on high. Congress is now irrelevant. Now it will be near imposable to turn anything off once the real curtain is pulled back.

Harry Reid won’t pass a budget. Without a budget, without some kind of plan for both branches to work on, they are all just flailing around like fish out of water. It is dysfunctional because of the lack of leadership and the lack of will to work on the problems. The Democrats just plan to render the Republicans totally worthless so the dems win back a super majority in 2014. I’m having a really hard time understanding why the Democratic led senate isn’t seen in just as bad or even a worse light than the Republican congress. At least the congress does pass budgets and jobs bills that Harry just tables. I don’t understand why either party puts up with this. They should all be sent home permanently.

I also blame Harry Reid for the problems with the fiscal cliff. If the Senate had done its normal business, they would have voted the house version up or down or possibly modified it and sent it to conference committee. All of this would have been done with CSPAN and other cameras rolling and there would have been transparency as well as a possibility that the public would finally blame the correct culprits. Instead, all of the dealing was done behind closed doors and possibly while some of the actors were suppose to be on vacation with an occasional peek at the progress and generous lubrication by the news spinning media. This process is not as bad as the one that created ObamaCare but it is a close second.

At least they kept the promises they made to get elected, not unlike the President who claimed he would cut the Bush era deficit by 50% not increase it by 400%, he even called Bush “UnPatriotic” for the deficit that he created over 8 yrs not in 4. Obama promised to get Immigration fixed he has yet to do that through Congress because Executive Orders only last as long as the President that creates them is in Office it is not considered the same as Laws passed in Congress, so the next President can just wipe out the so called “Dream Order” by not renewing it during his term. Just to be clear, are you saying that the Congress are the enemies of America? You are then giving Harry Reid a pass for taking bills that Congress sends him and preventing them to get a vote in the Senate to protect their political careers.

Yep, it is as simple as that. Get the press to support your every move and then demonize anyone that disagrees with you and then you can do anything you want to.

I love the Media. They managed to persecute the past President every day for 8 years and have not found one instance where the current President has made a mistake in 4 years. You have to love this media.

Unemployment under 5% and he is demonized as the worst President ever and now we have a President that has kept unemployment above 9% for 4 years and he is the greatest President ever.

Love this Media that sent a large team to vet Sarah Palin and spent a lot of money investigating her but felt no need to vet Pres. Obama that hired proven communist and leftist in his administration.

I guess you don ‘t understand the definition of SUPER-majority. It’s not identical, it’s when there are over-whelmingly, more of one party, than the other.

I am not sure this is correct. The Rep. Controlled sent bill after bill to the Senate and Harry Reid made the decision to table them and not allow a vote

It may be true now that the Rep. Party has chosen the liberal agenda but that doesn’t mean that Congress didn’t at least try.

Well I’m surprised (sarc). Are any of you? Both Dems and Reps are nothing but crooks looking for their next mark (that would be you and me American Tax Payer). All these crooks look out for is their own bottom-line. They don’t give a rat’s-red-patoot about us low-life-unwashed-masses (who pay their salaries. Well crap, they’re all millionaires, so the chump-change we pay them doesn’t really make a difference. They’re just in it for the power they can hold over us poor tax paying slobs). Question: Who impeaches the unimpeachable when those who should be impeached hold the vote to impeach those who should be impeached? Hmmmm?

There should be a law that no more laws can be passed untill they get rid of at least half of the ones on the books now.

The less laws the lawbreakers pass the better,I never could understand how someone gauges their congressman’s effectiveness by how many new laws and regulations the lawbreakers create,it’s illogical.
As for a budget they do need to do that and Barry tried but no one not even the communists in the so called democrat party voted for it,tells you how much he wants to pass a budget huh? He knew the commies in his own party wouldn’t support it,he doesn’t want a budget because it doesn’t fit with his agenda to have one.

Well I didn’t think that before. I know the Tea Party attempted to put conservative candidates on the ballots. For the 1st term they tried and passed bill after bill and sent it to the Senate only to have Harry Reid to toss the bills in the trash and not bring them to the floor.

Now ;you have the MSM bashing Congress and all that they have tried to do and give the Senate a pass.

You may be right, Congress tried and the Senate made sure they failed. Now you have the Rep. Party wanting to change and take the liberal policies because they think it will help them. Got news for them. If that is true then yes the Republican Party is dead and you people that wanted to be controlled or provided by the Government are probably going to get your wish.

The GOP has been relegated to being a small minority because we elect crooks and people that lie with the best of them. When they had the majority and people’s support, they screwed us just like the Dems do. They lined their pockets, voted in fancy benefits for them selves and left the tax payers out in the cold.

People seem to be pushing Libertarians and Conservative parties, they have no record to show us that they are any better than the Dems and Reps. They want to show they have anything to provide, they need to run for local and state positions and demonstrate that they are better.

The problem with Washington is when you get there you get corrupted with all that money. Think of it .. What would you do for a million dollars, nothing .. well how about five million dollars .. What would you do for the Boss if he gives you a promotion. As long people abandon their principles for money and power, there is no hope. Yes I live in a glass house and yes I abandoned some of my principles for a better job and more money but what I did did not hurt or mess people’s lives. Also I pray that the Lord forgives me for my sins.

It is true that we have one party system. As long as we have a press that features the values that this Senate wants to give us then yes we do. The people voted for more of what this Administration promised them and that was more government control and we will get more taxes to give more to you.

This is exactly what the people voted for. You are correct that now the Rep Party wants to go along with the liberals in hopes that they can get votes later.

Guess what, if this is what America wants then they will get it. I am a conservative and will not vote for liberal Republicans. It looks like the Communists have won and America is destroyed.

Since when has the number of new laws passed been a measure of legislative efficiency? If we’re going to use that as a standard, we should just count pages of legislation passed and call Pelosi’s Obamacare legislature the most productive Congress in history.

      Agreed.

Yet I will be clear on one thing, as the ‘most unproductive’ Congress for generations, so long as it blocked the madness of Obama and the Progressives, and enabled Americans to hold onto some of our freedoms for a little longer, than for that portion it is a success.

Congress should not be measured by the count of the bills passed into law, but by what they do to ensure the freedoms of the people and the nations economy and the armed forces.

Obama and the communist left of course are massive disasters in all aspects to our way of life and freedoms.
