This MLB Team’s Retro Logo Has Critics Crying Racism — Do You Agree?
The Atlanta Braves are going retro. And they are ticking a lot of people off in the process.
Major League Baseball will introduce new batting practice caps next spring and the Braves have chosen to reintroduce the team’s old “screaming Indian” logo, which is proving to be controversial. ESPN’s Uni Watch provides a sneak peak at the new design:
“The Braves first started using the logo in 1954 when they were based in Milwaukee. It was used in various capacities until 1989. The team stopped using it at least in part because of pressure from groups that find the use of Native American imagery on sports uniforms offensive and dehumanizing,” AOL’s Sporting News reports.
And the reaction from the web has been less than positive so far.
“Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing… Grade F,” wrote Paul Lukas of ESPN’s Uni Watch.
The Atlantic Wire compiled a list of tweets reacting to the new logo:
Is the new logo offensive/racist or is this political correctness run amok?

Change the name to the “TTs” They play in Ted Turner Field, and damned near everything else in Atlanta is named Turner in one way or another. So, drive on down to Turner Field, pay a hundred dollars to park your car, two hundred per ticket to see the Ted Turners play in Turner Field, twenty bucks per box of Turner popcorn, and fifty bucks per cup of Turner beer. Maybe not every Indian tribe looked like this particular brave but this is what my mind comes up with when I think of an Indian Brave. I think it is the highest form of praise to put a face to Indian Braves! Should we also take all pictures of Indians out of our history books? When a sports organization picks this kind of logo, I think they are saying that they think that these people are worthy of being known & stand out in history! Too bad we have so many people out there that want to make an issue out of a non-issue! Let’s try finding a way to stop the spending in Washington & worry more about how far our dollar is falling rather than something as stupid as worrying about a sport’s logo!!!

Posted on December 29, 2012 at 12:25amI think we ought to insist on not offending our native brothers by naming our beloved sports teams after them.
Instead, we ought to name our teams after less controversial subjects: how about the Marquette Missionaries, the Washington Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Buffalo Hunters or the Cleveland Cavalry. How could Native Americans possibly object since these mascots would be clearly intended toward white people?
I know how incredibly offended I am as a part Norwegian, and part Irish American that the Minnesota Vikings and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have chosen to besmirch my heritage.

Posted on December 29, 2012 at 4:50amWorst, you bring up a good question. Is it offending most Native Americans, or only a few? Or is mainly a bunch of white people being offended for the Native Americans?
One of the past (possibly still ongoing?) controversies, North Dakota’s “Fighting Soux” actually had support of the local tribe, but mass condemnation by people outside the state (most of the activists and MSN personalities condemning it being mayo on white bread white).
It’s interesting for example the Florida State Seminoles for example apparently have close ties to the Seminole tribe, and have the tribes support.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_mascot_controversy
Likewise
“According to polling results published in Sports Illustrated in February 2002, “Although most Native American activists and tribal leaders consider Indian team names and mascots offensive, neither Native Americans in general nor a cross section of U.S. sports fans agree.[6] According to the article, “There is a near total disconnect between Indian activists and the Native American population on this issue.”[6]”
“In 2004, a poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania essentially confirmed the Sports Illustrated poll’s findings, concluding that 91% of the American Indians surveyed in the 48 states on the mainland USA found the name “Redskins” acceptable.[7]“

Posted on December 29, 2012 at 5:03amFor what its worth, there is a related topic in changing ethnic cultural names usually promoted by anglosphere as being for ‘PC’ reasons, but often they have no clue or idea what the people themselves want, or if they care. For example many academics insisting that all tribes of the north becalled Inuit (rather than Eskimo). Despite the fact that many tribes find that term an insult, and consider Eskimo to be ‘correct’ collective term for their tribes, because of certain cultural relations. Here is a good article that covers the subject.
http://www.isteve.com/2002_name_game_inuit_or_eskimo.htm
Another example it brings up;
The fashion of renaming the Bushmen of Southwestern Africa as the “San” exemplifies many of the problems with the name game. University of Utah anthropologist Henry Harpending, who has lived with the famous tongue-clicking hunter-gatherers said, “In the 1970s the name ‘San’ spread in Europe and America because it seemed to be politically correct, while ‘Bushmen’ sounded derogatory and sexist.”
Unfortunately, the hunter-gatherers never actually had a collective name for themselves in any of their own languages. “San” was actually the insulting word that the herding Khoi people called the Bushmen. (“Khoi” is the term used by those who were labeled “Hottentots” by the Dutch. As you can probably guess by now, “Khoi” means “the real people.”)
Harpending noted, “The problem was that in the Kalahari, ‘San’ has all the baggag

Posted on December 29, 2012 at 5:10amBoth of these topics bring up a good point; Should people outside of a state or outside a tribe project their own ‘disgust’ of symbols or terms used in the state or tribe? Should local tribes decide for themselves if it is offensive or not to them, or what they they would like to be called?
Are people outside the state or tribe projecting their own bias and bigotry, possibly even racism by not accepting, tolerating, or respecting the local cultures opinions and choices on the matter?

They picked a logo and name for which they wanted people to hate them, take on a totally negative racist attitude to a set group of individuals obviously to build themselves up by tearing others down, like liberal policies do. You know, do the politically correct thing, to build a fan base by bullying.
At least, that is what liberals and the ACLU want you to think, of any sports team that gives accolades and respect to such a minority group. It cannot be that the Atlanta Braves respect such Indians and want to build up the spirit of such a group.
How dare any sports group take that away from the all knowing and powerful left leaning leadership we have today. Liberals alone should have the right to discriminate, bury the past by not allowing free speech. Not for historical spirit and pride of a minority to be highlighted by a sports team making a group a symbol to admired, Minorities are only for liberals to take advantage of. After all, demeaning groups and causing division is where the real power lays in American power and law these days. That power belongs only in the liberal’s playbook.
Only the government along with help from the ACLU has the right to rewrite history to their benefit, gain power by such causing controversy and division which allows them to further their own power base while others below them bicker and tear each other apar
