    If a child is over age 18 & you are paying for his/her higher education, then you owe your adult child a detailed explanation of expectations & what you will be monitoring (e-mail, cell phone records, activities, grades, etc.) If you aren’t upfront with your child on what you will be monitoring, you have no right to infringe upon their adult privacy at whim. You DO have the right to withdraw your financial support, but you DO NOT have the right to intimidate them at whim.

    Shame on parental elders for not spelling out money lending / gifting agreement rules to children & later challenge the “kids” for not following unwritten (or unspoken) rules.

    Bottom line . . . if you are paying for your adult child’s higher education, you & he/she should sign a legal, (adult) contract. Otherwise, either cut off the free funds for your grown up baby & back off BIG TIME, or let the apple of your eye continue to rob you blind & STOP complaining!

    Once they turn 18, they are adults. Treat them as such or suck up the icky consequences of treating them as if they were 10 til they are 20, 25, or 30. Everyone wants to protect & help their children. The reality is that pampering them (pun intended as I think of the diaper brand, “Pampers”) remains a disservice to an adult child’s future growth. BE THE PARENT & prepare them for life at the milestone moment (age 18) they become legally aged adults.

    One day, they may fully appreciate this fine gift & all will be well.

    If you’re going to be the kind of parent that pays ALL the bills for the student than the arrangement needs to be all grades must be A’s or B’s and if not the funding stops. No need to spy on your kid. If they are into things you don’t approve of (drugs, too much partying, or way too sexually active) than that will reflect in their grades and you have in a sense “caught” them anyhow without resorting to stalker tactics. Plus with you paying all the bills it’s easy to punish them cause now they simply have to come home and you don’t have to worry about what they are doing.

    As far a college student paying their own way through school…….well in that case they can snort coke every night and fail every class they attend. We don’t want the government holding our hands when we make our own way so I sure as hell wouldn’t intrude on the life of my 18 year old if they truly are making their own way.

    Parents don’t need to spy on their over 18 years of age college attending children;

    All a parent has to say AS LONG AS I AM FOOTING ANY PORTION OF YOUR COLLEGE TUITION/BILLS, you will allow me to monitor your computer and cell phone or I won’t give you another penny. END OF DISCUSSION. The student will either drop out, take on thousands in students loans, juggle several part – time jobs with no time to party OR AGREE TO WHAT THE PARENTS WANT.

    I would CUT OFF the 21 year woman who took her parents to court. She wanted to be FREE – then be free of their cash also.

    If used to keep kids safe from say a serial killer or if they are involved in totaling vehicles at their fault more than once or drunk driving more than once something equally dangerous but otherwise to just spy thats going to far and is totally insane to want that kind of control of your adult child.

    Do I agree with their tactics – NO!

    But in the same vain, if I am paying for the education; I deserve to
    Know the marks that that are being produced or not produced by
    The fruits of my labor! Don’t tell me that is privileged info

      Thats what report cards are for. Paying for your cchilds education does not give you the right to track their every movement. This girl was a straight A student and even the school had to get involved. Time to cut the cord parents.

      I see this as no different than government SPYING on every citizen. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, IT DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD.

      Mind your own business!

    Are you putting on a clinic to get around the legal system?
    Tips for stalking your children?
