No Deal: Fiscal Cliff Negotiations to Reconvene on New Year’s Eve With ‘Significant Distance’ to Bridge

Harry Reid: No Fiscal Cliff Deal Tonight, Reconvene New Years Eve

The Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol is seen as Congress convenes to negotiate a legislative path to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” of automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts that could kick in Jan. 1., in Washington, Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. (Photo: AP)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Sunday that any potential deal to avert the impending “fiscal cliff” would come with only hours to spare.

Combative as ever, Reid said he was pleased to hear that Republicans had withdrawn their suggestions for modifying Social Security benefits– before saying the suggestion never should have been made.

Reid continued: “There’s still significant distance between the two sides, but negotiations continue.  There’s still time left to reach an agreement, and we intend to continue negotiations.”

If the country heads over the “cliff” on January 1, a litany of taxes are set to increase and automatic budget cuts to the military will begin.  Republicans don’t want to see tax hikes for any income group, while Democrats want to raise taxes on families making over $250,000 a year (or “millionaires and billionaires” as they are referred to in most speeches).

The Washington Post summarizes Sunday’s developments:

Negotiations hit an impasse this afternoon, with Democrats accusing Republicans of insisting on Social Security being part of a deal and Republican accusing Democrats of refusing to make a counteroffer.

“We all know that we’re running out of time,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) McConnell said, offering to work “through the night” if needed. “I’m willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner.”

While most were hopeful that Congress would make significant progress on Sunday, secondary provisions are already being made.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has even introduced the “Cliff Alleviation at the Last Minute” (CALM) Act, described by the Washington Post:

The measure would phase in the looming tax increases over three years, rather than all at once, and allow the Office of Management and Budget to pick which programs would be cut rather than having the across-the-board cuts contained in sequestration.

“This is not a great plan, merely a better plan than going over the cliff,” Manchin said of the proposal. “It should never have come to this.”

“Fiscal Cliff negotiations”? Are you people THIS clueless?

100 years of progressive communism (“Progressives” … get it?) has fed us the poison of socialism piecemeal. But there is no free meal. Over all that time, the Obamas of Washington DC have hidden our debt with borrowing and deficit spending.

      We’re broke!

They have spent ALL our money through deceit (did you know that there has been NO BUDGET from Congress for years but they are still spending? can you say unConstitutional? can you say treasonous?). Our bill is coming due and our foreign debtors, with their troops (bill collectors), will show up at our door to claim THEIR property in lieu of our non-payment.

America is crumbled by traitors from within and is fallen by foreigners (can you say “New World Order”?) without a fight:

When does the March on D.C. begin? Because if they start taxing us and our employers into oblivion -on top of the Economy Tax- what’s left to lose besides taking our money back from these thieving dregs? At what point will tolerance reach its limit?…..

I don’t think Congress prays very often–except possibly to pray for re-election or to the possibility that “she (or he) was actually over eighteen.” At this juncture, I don’t really mind. A do-nothing Congress is what we really need.

And it has been known that turbo tax timmy was gonna rob the federal retirement system of 200B to give them some more “headroom” for the debt limit for several months. That’s the plan, kick the can down the road, create a cloud of dust, and send the sheep over the cliff. Timmy has done this THREE times under Obama…historically that is now a total of about 9 times. But those other times was over a period of 30 some odd years. And they said they would pay it back with interest…pfft. Even Regan robbed the retirement sys…they all dip into it when things get bad…but if you own a company and have retirement sys set up for your employees, you go to jail for robbing the retirement system…

But Obama said we are better off than four years ago…. What happened? Gee, where did this cliff come from..It is just sad that so many people refuse to see the light..This system will collapse, it is just a matter of time…Now with this liar in office there is little time. If you failed to be at least prepared at a minimal level I would say it’s never to late, but I would say you’d better hurry IMO…..

Pay close attention to what happends tomarrow folks, If Boehner and McConnell cave then we must find a way to immediately remove them from office because if we don’t live up to our word others in the party will see it as weekness and will continue with the foolish caving…………… PHONE, FAX or EMAIL your rep and senator and demand that they vote against any deal that gives Obama and dems even a fraction of what they are demanding.

We should just go over the “cliff”, but the Republicans we’ve elected are cowards so there will be some kind of deal tomorrow in which the Democrats get most of what they want while the Republicans get nothing. Never the less Hoping against hope I will pray that we do go over the “fiscal cliff”, it is by far the best outcome.

Everyone who is trading in puts. Traders make money in a bear market as well as a bull market. In fact it is easier to make money in a bear market. Think of the market as flight of stairs. It is easier to go down a flight of stairs than it is to go up a flight.

Before Obama, the federal retirement system was robbed about 6 times…Obama quickens the process.

Another news story stated that the Politicians that the Tea Party got elected were refusing to give in to the Democrats. There are 40 or 50 of them. If this is true, I want to congratulate them for fighting back. To me, this was good news. The Tea Party isn’t going anywhere, but I have my doubts about the RINO’s. Anyone else hear about it?

So once again congress waits until the last minute to do anything. And anything they do will not change the fiscal he** that will come raining down on the average tax-paying American Citizen. I really think those on the “Hill” either haven’t got a clue what average tax-paying American Citizens want or they’re ALL stalling to destroy this country so they ALL can rebuild it to their own liking. I’ve read posts on other articles were people are demanding term limits, no perks for congress, etc, etc, etc…I agree, but We The Average Tax-Paying American Citizen cannot change congress. They make the laws and We The Average Tax-Paying American Citizen cannot do a frigging thing about it. Some say, “We’ll vote them out.” Right, just to elect who we’re told to elect to further their cause. Let’s face it America, we’re screwed and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.

Democrats didn’t mind supposedly falling on the sword for socialized health care. Republicans in the House need to supposedly fall on the sword and shut this government down over the debt ceiling. At that point they might get a little respect from Obama and Reed. I bet they will start listening then.
