7 NFL Coaches, 5 GMs Out of Work After Brutal ‘Black Monday’

By lunchtime Monday, seven NFL coaches were looking for work. The coaches were joined by five NFL general managers.

Cleveland Browns

One day after another dismal season ended with a loss in Pittsburgh, the Browns fired coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, the first moves in an expected overhaul by new owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner.

Shurmur went 9-23 in his two seasons with the Browns, who will embark on yet another offseason of change – the only constant in more than a decade of futility. Cleveland has lost at least 11 games in each of the past five seasons and made the playoffs just once since returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999.

Chicago Bears

The Bears fired head coach Lovie Smith on Monday after the team missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons. General manager Phil Emery delivered the news to Smith on the day after the Bears beat Detroit to finish 10-6 but still didn’t make the playoffs.

Philadelphia Eagles

Andy Reid’s worst coaching season with the Philadelphia Eagles ended Monday after 14 years when he was fired by owner Jeffrey Lurie, who said it was time “to move in a new direction.”

The dismissal came one day after Reid and the Eagles were humiliated 42-7 by the New York Giants and ended their season at 4-12

Buffalo Bills

Chan Gailey didn’t work out after three losing seasons, leaving the Buffalo Bills looking for their fifth head coach since 2001.

The Bills fired Gailey on Monday after he failed to deliver on his vow to transform a losing franchise into a playoff contender.

Gailey’s entire staff was fired, too, but the status of general manager Buddy Nix remained uncertain.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are doing more than looking for a new coach after firing Romeo Crennel on Monday. They’re changing the entire structure of the organization.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in an interview with The Associated Press that he will hire the next head coach and that person will report directly to him. That’s a departure from the previous 53 years in Kansas City, where the head coach had always reported to the general manager.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after the team lost 11 of its last 12 games. Rod Graves, the team’s general manager, was also let go.

San Diego Chargers

Finally, the San Diego Chargers parted ways with head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith after the last game of the season.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags fired general manager Gene Smith on Monday and head coach Mike Mularkey could go soon, too.

New York Jets

Though he also had a losing record, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan held onto his job while general manager Mike Tannenbaum was let go.

Maybe we should fire Obama for failing to deliver his vow on cutting the debt in half by the end of his first term.

OH, IL, PA, NY, CA and FL. These states surely have their priorities all mixed up. They fire their coaches for failing to make the playoffs but they keep re-electing the same old tired politicians to the House, Senate and WH year after year inspite of the fact that the country is going down the tubes.? Is the Super Bowl that much more important that the well being of our country?

I am an avid football fan and I have to tell you that I have been sick and tire of Lovie Smith’s style of run, run, pass. With his smarts you would think he could come up with some kind of intelligent play. The run, run s___T jut doesn’t cut it. Get a front line for Cutler to step up and do the job he was hired to do and that is PASS. He has great receiver and granted Forte is a great runner but no many teams are ableto establish a good running game in the last few years. Chicago defense is outstaning and everyone knows it. Let’s get that offnse moving in th right direction. They are my favs of course.

Now its time to fire Congress and the President. Maybe some of them can coach, but they sure can’t represent and protect the Constitution.

I gave up on the NFL and this type of action is just one of the things that turned me off. Constant firing of coaches will never get a team to be great. Look at the teams that consistently do well and you will find that most of those teams maintain long coach tenure. The NFL has become nothing but the National Fools League under the current commissioner. Thanks Goodell for ruining what once was a great and entertaining sport. Now it is nothing but a puppet show.

As a Bears fan, I’d like to see the Bears lure Bill Cowher out of retirement and turn that team into a perennial Superbowl contender for the next decade or so.

Good riddance to Lovie. How about having some stinking emotion when your players don’t produce? And how about the fact that Lovie is a long-time friend of the McCaskeys? Hmmm, no nepotism there whatsoever. This man never so much as uttered a word when his players messed up. It’s like he was doped up on valium his entire contract. Irritates me so much when all these loser talking heads at ESPN ridicule Cutler for riding Webb’s sorry rear for not doing his job and Lovie can’t so much as utter a word. Lovie was a mistake.

Lovie was, is and will always be a defensive coach. But I’m sorry, the old adage of defenses win games no longer applies. Look at the game, the scores… Offenses win games. Yeah, the Bears defense was top-ranked on take-aways and points, but that only gets you so far.

Think of it this way. Your defense stops their offense, you don’t score and punt away, stops them again, you don’t score and punt away, stops them again, you don’t score and punt away, stops them again, they score, you don’t, they score, you don’t, you stop them. So what. They are ahead. Offenses win games. Lovie never realized this. That’s why the Bears line still had JaLoser Webb (73) at the end of the year. This guy couldn’t block a 3-year old girl from the QB. Lovie never cared about the “O”. Let’s get someone who rides his players for messin up and understands that half a squad (your D playing as your O) only gets you so far. Good riddance Lovie.

Its FANtastic, the NFL is incredibly successful and all American business’s should pay attention. Fire the non-producer’s. If there worth salt they’ll find work if not find a new carrier. I laugh at all the talking heads crying about Lovie getting canned, I would have canned him 2 years ago .

Now maybe San Diego can get someone in there to get them to work harder. Losing 4 or 5 games with big leads in the fourth quarter is inexcusable. Maybe Rex Reid from philly, he is from san diego…

For diversity, a couple of black head coaches were fired, too. I guess it was the Rooney rule in reverse. BTW, can we now dispense with the Rooney rule and simply see head coaches hired for talent. You do not see any complexion diversity applied to choosing players.

I don’t known much about the Jets but it seems Ryan dodged a bullet here. (Sorry Diane, about that bullet thing). Must have been the GM’s fault that they can’t get anything out of their players, especially the Quarterbacks. Yes, Ryan couldn’t even give Tebow a shot (sorry) when it didn’t make any difference at all. Most likely afraid Tim would have show what the team might have done.

They made the right choice. It was stupid to waste all that money on Tebow in the first place. They already had a talented but relatively inexperienced quarterback whose only weakness is connecting on long passes, what the hell do they need another one for? Instead of three quarterbacks, they should have invested in some better receivers. For all the mistakes Ryan made, and there were plenty, it was more the manager’s fault they had a losing season

I watched NFL Network for a bit after Redskins beat Cowboys. Deion Sanders kept saying over and over that the Cowboy’s season keep ending the same way, with a failure by Romo. His record in games where he has to win or go home is 1-6. That’s a lot of failure…he hasn’t been the same since he fumbled the snap vs. Seattle in the playoffs a few years ago.

I concur. As a life long Philadelphia Eagles fan, I long for the days when Dallas was a first rate football team in its management, coaches and administration. Many folks do not know that Tom Landry was a WW2 vet with many 8th Air Force bomber missions under his belt before returning home. In addition to his profession of faith as a christian, I believe his service shaped his life and left an indelible print on his football teams. In particular, I have often admired his ability to persevere, remembering the early Dallas teams which were so awful, the early playoff disappointments, and the final culmination of the first Super Bowl victory. His teams were classy and great representatives of the State of Texas. And now, not so much, both on the field and off.
