Archbishop Calls for Catholics in England to Oppose Gay Marriage ‘Clearly, Calmly & Forcefully’

LONDON (TheBlaze/AP) — The leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales has urged followers to write to their representatives in Parliament to oppose the government’s plans to allow gay marriage.

In a letter read to congregations over the weekend, Archbishop Vincent Nichols called for Catholics to express their views “clearly, calmly and forcefully.”

Nichols says he is concerned about how a change in the law would affect what children are taught about marriage.

He says he wants members of Parliament to “defend, not change, the bond of man and woman in marriage as the essential element of the vision of the family.”

Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative-led government plans to introduce legislation in January to allow gay marriages. Recent opinion polls suggest a large majority of the public supports the change.

As England prepares for a debate surrounding same-sex marriage, France, too, has had recent protests surrounding the controversial subject. After thousands of Catholics amassed for large-scale protests against gay unions in November, a human rights group called “FEMEN” took to the streets of Paris, going topless and wearing nun habits in support of same-sex marriage.

This latest push against homosexual unions on the part of Archbishop Nichols comes after Pope Benedict XVI used his Christmas message to defend traditional marriage. The Catholic Church continues to push back against movements in favor of gay unions across the globe.

I didn’t see this story covered in the Blaze, such is surprising:

“Cardinal Keith O’Brien has signalled he made homosexual advances towards young men, in an extraordinary statement which confirmed he would now withdraw from public life.

The man who just a week ago was the most senior Catholic cleric in the UK admitted his “sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected” but he did not make specific reference to the acts themselves.

O’Brien was a vociferous and colourful opponent of gay marriage, saying it would lead to “further aberrations” and lead society to “degenerate even further than it already has into immorality”.

Shades of Ted Haggard, except this wasn’t some two bit televangelist, this was Britain’s top Catholic!

No matter the subject, when an institution or a word is declared to be redefined, you should smell a rat. It is the same as saying that as cats feel discriminated against, so hence forth, we will be called dogs (actual cats of course, would say it should be just the opposite). Everybody knows the truth, except for those that have been so brainwashed that words no longer have finite exact meanings, they can mean whatever you have been told they mean.

OneWhoReallyLovesMe…In this year of Evangelization, proclaimed by Pope Benedict, isn’t it a great thing that we, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ through HIS Church, have the opportunity to share some of the revealed truths handed down to us from God Himself through HIS Church! I love seeing some of the posts from my brothers and sisters defending these truths. Am praying for those who read them that even in their initial rejection they will finally at some time in their lives realize God created and loves them and wants them to get to know Him. How? The same way I just mentioned, HIS revealed truths handed down through HIS One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Get a Catechism of the Catholic Church, (Book that teaches these truths) He’s waiting for you!

According to recent census, there were 41 million Christians in Great Britain. (72% of the population) Statistics show church attendance in both Catholic and Anglican churches suffered up to the turn of the century, but since the numbers have stabilized. See: “Goodbye Good Men” by Michael Rose. Catholics in the USA “know” that homosexuals have flocked to Catholic seminaries to become priests and that pedophiles have also. Pope Benedict has condemned this and taken steps but the Catholic Church in the USA in particular has proven to be quite resistant on this subject. There has also been a concerted effort over the last 50 years to take down the Catholic Church, specifically in Ireland, because this was the place that made an incredible number of priests so these “people” whoever they were absolutely ruined on purpose the Catholic Church in Ireland and who is investigating Great Britain on this or the Anglican Church on this because the British have hated Ireland and tried to ruin Ireland for centuries. This is a historical fact. What better way to ruin Ireland than to ruin the Catholic Church and seminaries making priests? This was all on purpose. Ireland and the USA are TARGETS for ruining priests because it is KNOWN how powerful a Good Priest is and we still have good ones. Protestants don’t know anything about this history. Unless you do just don’t comment okay? You have no right to make judgements about something you know nothing about. Clean up your own filthy churches. They are polluted as well.

There are levels of strict psychological testing and examinations of all seminarians in the USA that are studying to become priests. These are used to filter out any men who have tendencies toward abusing children. The Catholic Church has done much to try and assure that similar instances do not occur.

@ SHORELINELIZ, Yes, things have changed a great deal since JPII was Pope. I know many new priests who have just been ordained and many seminarians currently under study. They all concur that a great change has taken place and there are multiple levels in place to detect individuals who may put children at risk. The screening process prior to becoming a transitional deacon (step before priesthood) is a grueling process now. Many say to the point of it being over done.

You don’t think it’s more likely it was simply the vow of celibacy that priests take, which led homosexuals to the catholic church? In a society where single men are viewed with suspicion if they never take a wife, wouldn’t being a priest be an attractive cover for someone with no interest in the opposite sex? And of course the unconditional authority with which priests are held creates a situation where unfulfilled sexual urges can attach themselves to vulnerable youngsters, and nobody dares to question it.

That seems more plausible than your conspiracy theory, sorry.

To GRFUL1JM: If you read “Goodbye Good Men” by Michael Rose he reports the opposite of what you are saying. He says that seminarians who do NOT fall in line with Liberal Teaching, aka, “homosexuality is normal”, these are the seminarians that are sent to psychologists/psychiatrists in seminary for “evaluation” until they recant. So, I don’t know how it is today, right now, but during John Paul II reign this is how American Catholic Seminaries were operating. I heard that Pope Benedict had ordered changes in these seminaries but I don’t know if they happened. I know a couple of nuns at some Catholic University were “let go” recently over everything that is going on. What people do not understand is that Liberal Academics over took the Catholic Universities. And polluted them. I joined the Cardinal Newman Society which gives me news on what Catholic Schools and Colleges are off the chart Liberal. Of course, all these colleges teach pro homosexual and pro abortion subjects without impunity which should not be. They are Catholic.

Just some data on “priests” for all you Catholic “haters” out there. Sexual misconduct is 30% across the board in ALL Christian religions. It is covered up among the Methodists and Lutherans, the Presbyterians and Evangelicals. For years the Catholic Church “moved” around priests accused or suspected of such crimes. But there is actually a website where you can view “priests” who are defrocked and criminalized. Does the Catholic Church need to do more? Yes! So does your denomination as well. Why don’t you look up the statistics about your own filthy pastors as well in your own denomination. You would probably have a jaw dropping experience to know that sexual deviants exist among the Protestant churches at the same rate. If you have the guts to look.

@JD9215…If you are talking about the program that helps prevent future sexual misconduct, it is working exceptionally well. As long as lawsuits that are not capped are allowed, (lawsuits against a school district are capped. That is why no one sues a school district.) there will continue to be those who wish to capitalize. My prayers go out to those who suffered abuse, and not all wish to capitalize. As I’ve stated before; The Catholic Church is a perfect institution run by imperfect men. Human frailty and deception are imperfect qualities that mankind possesses. There are far fewer incidents within the Catholic Church than other denominations, school systems and social organizations. The MSM doesn’t want you to know that though and continues to fuel the fire for anti-Catholic bigots. No, I am not a Priest, but am a faithful Catholic that DID NOT vote for the current administration and its morally deficient platform. I support the Pope, my Bishop, my Priest, and my Parish.

I teach children the catechism. If you are not a Catholic, how can you know if your sons’ teacher is as Catholic as they come? An authentic Catholic, properly taught the catechism would know enough not to vote for Obama. Unfortunately, in the last couple of decades, there were some poorly catechized Catholics. We call them CINOs (Catholic in name only) and that includes those that attend Mass, but have no idea about Catholic belief.
Obviously, if this teacher is persecuting your son, she is nowhere near a true Catholic, but you have a responsibility to report her! Quit complaining and do something about it.

      HI

Please don’t judge all Catholics because some or even many don’t adhere to Catholic doctrine. Catholic social teaching is supposed to be based on the principle of subsidiarity. That holds that nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be. This principle is the foundation of limited government and personal freedom. It conflicts with the passion for centralization and bureaucracy characteristic of the Welfare State.

Perhaps your son could respectfully inform his teacher that if a Catholic voter knows a candidate is pro abortion and votes for that candidate anyway, that voter sins mortally. Why a Catholic would jeopardize their soul by voting for a pro choice candidate is beyond me.

The Pope and Former Pontiff’s have been trying to discipline the rogue Catholics in the USA and they are getting around to it more now and these nuns who are FemiNazis. It is very political because the Vatican is in Rome and these churches are in the USA and no one knows exactly how the procedures go, if recalled to Rome, which is used to be, for these things. I don’t know Canon Law concerning these things either. There are Canon Lawyers and charges have to be brought up and I don’t know how that works outside of the Vatican which is in Italy. For some time, I would say since the 50s, Post WWII, the VAtican lost control of the US Catholic Church and Vatican II was a council between 1962-1965 to try and resolve some issues without success because they could not get the Bishops to follow through and John Paul II should have done a better job. He did ex communicate some bishops in France.

This church has condoned and hidden the crime of child rape for hundreds of years. They would continue to do so, but many victims came forward and made the savage crimes public. Now the flood gates are open. The pope at one time was in the position of moving known rapists from one parish to another. He is directly responsible for the continued rape of kids. There is no justifying it or absolution. Saying 5 “our fathers” won’t make it better. The confessions don’t absolve these criminals of any responsibility in the real world. The steps taken to solve this problem by the church are because they had no choice. If catholic priest child rape had not been made public, it would still continue. In fact, more than likely it still does. Although gay marriage is an inevitability, the church should stay focused on dealing with crimes it has spent generations supporting…child rape.

First off it is not the Pope who assigns priests but the Bishop. I agree there was great wrongdoing with the problem of molestation in the Church, But the Church is now a leader in the education and awareness of this issue and many schools, churches, and organizations are modeling themselves after the the Catholic Church for instructing members, volunteers and staff to prevent this. Anti- Catholic bigots just love to use this played out trump card for a talking point.

Trotting out this old chestnut is getting a little tired, isn’t it? This sin of the church is horrific just as it is when committed in other religious organizations, psychiatric practices, schools or in any profession where trust is violated and it is covered up.

      Get it, Mr. V:
Catholics do not have an exclusive on this or any other sin that was created by man.
Any sin is horrific because it offends and subverts the will of God.

If you have a suggestion as to how this matter could be better handled in any institution, please come forward. Are you aware of any organization that has done a better job at dealing with this matter than the church?

This Catholic bashing is pathetic and worn out.

If you would care to read the church’s official pronouncements including “The Theology of the Body” you might be shocked to discover why the church takes the position it does. It actually is quite beautiful.

You contridict yourself. Many homosexuals are also pedophiles, so wouldn’t the Church be addressing child rape? Also, you spread gossip and denograte the Pope without showing proof he was responsible. To try and ruin someone’s reputation is a great sin.
Despite headlines focusing on the priest pedophile problem in the Roman Catholic Church, most American churches being hit with child sexual-abuse allegations are Protestant, and most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers.

These are findings from national surveys by Christian Ministry Resources (CMR), a tax and legal-advice publisher serving more than 75,000 congregations and 1,000 denominational agencies nationwide.

Those that keep harping on this are nothing more than social bores who are so entrenched in their position that no amount of rational discussion will ever convince them that their views are contrary to reality. It will take the very presence of Jesus, His Devine Mercy and their humble acceptance of Him (enlightenment of conscience, which will happen soon) to come an acknowledgement of their hard-heartedness. Fasting and prayers for their enlightenment is all we can do for them at this point. The rest is up to their Free Will to accept the Grace of Truth.

As of April 11, 2011, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has counted 5,948 clerics “not implausibly” and “credibly” accused in 1950-2010 of sexually abusing minors.

Over the 60 year time frame, an average of 99 U.S. based Catholic priest have been credibly accused of sexual abuse (5,948/60 = 99.133)

Currently there are approximately 100 married priests in the United States.
People who hate the Catholic Church like to imply all Catholic priests are pedophiles; but why not say all Catholic priests are married? (equal numbers) Most will tell you no Catholic priest are married.

The mainstream media has all but ignored the recent Associated Press report that the three major insurance companies for Protestant Churches in America say they typically receive 260 reports each year of minors being sexually abused by Protestant clergy, staff, or other church-related relationships.

That would be 99 vs 260

Let’s be clear: the report of abuse in Protestant Churches in no way clears guilty members of the Catholic Church — neither the predators nor those who moved them from church to church and put other young people in danger. But the report does give us better perspective. The problem of sexual abuse has no denominational boundaries.

The only fly in the Catholic Church’s ointment is going to be the decades of molested boys that was either ignored or covered up. This will detract from the many, faithful Priests and followers, but it was a major tragedy that should not have been brushed under the rug.
As for the choices we make as a society, the farther we remove ourselves from moral structure, the more that other things must become the norm. Gays say they are normal. “you see it in the animal kingdom” So they’re not any smarter than an animal. Makes sense. What will gays say when NAMBLA begins actively pushing their sick agenda and saying they’re normal too? As morals and personal responsibility decay, the lines WILL shift. Then people will cry, “How did our world get so bad?” It is a traceable, historic fact in the downfall of once-successful societies. Whine and scream all you want. You can’t change facts… only ignore them.

The Catholic Church has implemented one of the best programs to ensure that sexual misconduct towards children will never happen again. Many denominations, schools, and volunteer programs are modeling their own programs based on it or they are using the same program. The Catholic Church moves forward on issues such as this. The Church takes an approach to stop what is happening and form a program to assure it is corrected. It is too bad that the school districts and other social and volunteer organizations are not putting as much effort and resources into the problem. The anti- Catholic bigots can continue to throw the overused trump card into the fray, but as a Catholic, I am very pleased at the progress the Church has made on this troubling issue to ensure it never happens again.

The biggest fly is to brand all priests child molesters or pedophiles. Which they are all not. Not anymore than the sexual deviants among the pastors of the Mainline Protestant/Evangelical churches. Wherever there are positions of power there will be men sexually abusing. Wherever men or women are given authority over children there will be child molestation. It happens in all religions or faiths where authority cannot be questioned. The Muslims have an incredible problem with child molestation and homosexuality. Child molestation has completely ruined Ireland. That case is relatively recent. I think it involved 14,000 claimants and the Christian Brothers. I have not heard who went to jail yet. But, it ruined the lives of 14,000 Catholic boys and girls. Roman Catholic Church in Ireland is completely ruined. On purpose. Author Michael Rose believes that these homosexuals and pedophiles were strategically placed to bring the church down. There is another investigator who wrote a more detailed book on this and Malachi Martin wrote on this as well. If you can get people to believe that the entirety of the Catholic Church is chock full of homosexual and pedophile priests you can take down the whole enterprise. Which they are still trying to do. But, it won’t work. Cause we know what they are trying to do. And fighting them.

What the archbishop should be calling for is an end to the molestation going on by his own priests.

Broken trust between the flock and the shepherds must be mended.

Molestation should never occur in the workplace, in the schools, in prisons, in the daycare centers,in the Boys and Girls Scouts, in the synagogue, in the mosque, and in the church.

You should educate yourself on the programs the Catholic Church has implemented worldwide and has shared with everyone to model their own programs to stop this type of abuse. The Church is a frontrunner in training and education on this issue today.
