UPDATED: With No House Vote, Will The U.S. Go Over ‘Fiscal Cliff’ at Midnight?
[Click here to follow TheBlaze'es coverage of the deal between Senate Republicans and the White House]:
–
The House said today that it would have one vote tonight and that it would not be on the “fiscal cliff,” a year-end combination of tax increases and heavy spending cuts, CNBC reports.
House leaders said last week during a last-minute meeting that it was up to the Senate to produce legislation that both chambers could agree on.
That Senate has failed produce anything. This means that it is almost certain that we will go over the “cliff” tonight:
BREAKING: The U.S. will go over the fiscal cliff tonight.
— CNBC (@CNBC) December 31, 2012
JUST IN: House will not vote tonight; nation will go over fiscal cliff at midnight
— CBS News (@CBSNews) December 31, 2012
Happy New Year!
UPDATE: But wait! Here’s some clarification from Brendan Buck, Press Secretary for House Speaker John Boehner:
People – we don’t have anything to vote on before midnight. The House will take action after the Senate passes something.
— Brendan Buck (@Brendan_Buck) December 31, 2012
Also, according to the National Review’s Robert Costa, a few “trusted sources say all sides, at top levels, know this gets done Jan 1 evening at the earliest, more likely Jan 2.”
Lastly, per CBS News’ Mark Knoller, House members are being asked to keep close to the Capitol Building in case “any additional votes arise”:
House Members also advised by Majority Whip’s office to “stay close to the Capitol tonight should any additional votes arise.”
— Mark Knoller (@markknoller) December 31, 2012
UPDATE(S) II: MSNBC’s Chuck Todd explains where the Senate stands in negotiations:
As soon as Biden and McConnell can work out buying down 3-months of the sequester via 50% spending cuts and 50% taxes, then there’s a deal
— Chuck Todd (@chucktodd) December 31, 2012
Now the Wall Street Journal reports that a deal has “largely” been reached:
Sen Kyl: Deal is largely reached to avert fiscal #cliff. Still hoping to vote tonight in Senate.
— WSJFiscalCliff (@WSJFiscalCliff) December 31, 2012
However, word is out (as Sen. Harry Reid would say) that there are a number of Democrats who are not on board with deal Sen. Kyle is talking about:
Based on what reporters are saying, Senate GOP very much trying to say “deal done” to isolate Ds who seem to still have issues.
— Joseph Weisenthal (@TheStalwart) December 31, 2012
Senate deal seems to be all squared away, except for the part where Democrats need to agree to it.
— Matt Yglesias (@mattyglesias) December 31, 2012
UPDATE III: Well, that didn’t take long:
The House has adjourned until noon tomorrow
— Felicia Sonmez (@feliciasonmez) December 31, 2012
House has adjourned til noon Tuesday – 12 hours into fiscal cliff. Talks on cliff measure continue but bill is yet to be brought to Senate.
— Mark Knoller (@markknoller) December 31, 2012
As of this writing, the Senate is waiting on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Vice President Joe Biden to broker an agreement. Reports claim a handful of Senate Democrats are unhappy with the package the two are working working out. UPDATE IV: Reports are coming in that a deal has been struck between the White House and Senate Republicans:
BREAKING: Senate Democratic aide: White House and GOP reach deal on fiscal cliff.
— The Associated Press (@AP) January 1, 2013
“The House is expected to begin considering the bill Tuesday with final passage in the next day or two,” writes the Washington Post’s Felicia Sonmez. “A vote on the package could be held by 10:30 p.m,” she adds. “[White House] officials gave in on estate tax.” According to initial reports, the final deal will also delay the automatic spending cuts (i.e. the “sequester”).
The deal is “basically” done. Now, Senate Dems have to bless it. Senate GOP has already done so. Vote cd happen by 3am — Chuck Todd (@chucktodd) January 1, 2013
Reports also note, along with GOP leaders, Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have signed off on the deal.
I am told by Hill/WH sources that Reid and Pelosi have OK’d the Biden-McConnell deal. Two-month sequester delay offset w/revenue & $ cuts — Major Garrett(@MajorCBS) January 1, 2013
The 2-month sequester delay: cuts would come half from defense & half-non-defense. 2 month window to give all sides time for bigger deal.

Whatever fiscal package emerges, it would appear that Joe Taxpayer confidently believes it’s going to be someone else’s ox that gets gored. A headline in the local paper revealed the public’s not-exactly-shocking ignorance about what’s going on in Washington: Shoppers Not Fearing Plunge Off ‘Cliff’ was how the Boulder Daily Camera presented the story-of-the-hour. Oh really? It’s a tragedy for America that people like those quoted in the article are allowed to vote, since they in fact have much to fear, even if they are not among Obama’s “filthy-rich” earners of $200,000 or more. For starters, a steep upward skew in the Alternative Minimum Tax that is set to take effect on January 1 will hit households down to the level of $75k. Even worse, it will be retroactive to 2012, taxing income that most people didn’t expect to pay taxes on.
There’s a common misperception about the fiscal cliff— that the tax increases only apply to 2013. Not true.
In a cruel epilogue to 2012, roughly 28 million families would owe the IRS $86 billion more than they anticipated for this year should the country plunge off the cliff, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 5:10pmThe republicans created this monster to scare the public. Now they are going to get the blame for it. Republicans are always shooting themselves in the foot because the people who vote for Obama just don’t care about fiscal cliffs. They don’t pay for it anyways. Republicans are still clueless as to what they are dealing with. It still amazes how that political party stays so clueless. Don’t they ever take a walk down the street in a big city? Don’t they ever check out who is getting all the money they vote for? Amazing, just simply amazing.

He want’s to see this country go down in flames, and he will see. But it will be people like you that cause it to happen. Yes I will die gun in hand if they try to take my guns, but they won’t just up nad start taking the guns, there will be some event that gives them a reason.
Sinse the school shooting wasn’t enough for Americans to quietlky hand over their guns, maybe, just maybe this fiscal cliff will be the answer to all of their blessings.
Those who don’t care are a part of the problem, not a part of the cure. When you say things like that you sound like a moron.

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 4:29pmOMG! The Mayans were right. The end of the world is upon us. The entire ‘fiscal cliff” is a sham. Our government and members of congress together with the moochers in our country are the true fiscal cliff. Those of us who pay for the spenders & moochers are barely hanging on. Does not matter what they do because whatever it does NEVER solves the problem.
Here are a few ideas: Stop and cut spending; actually balance the budget just like the states, cities and counties have to do; stop the class warfare; stop devaluing our currency and stop the endless and new wars. NOW! Until then the fiscal cliff will continue to be a black cloud over this country.

These polititians will never stop unless they are made to stop, they call it an impeachment. Obama needs to be out of office, ah oops I mean Berry.
He will continue to devalue the dollar, and ride rough shot on this country because he hates the USA.
But don’t get me wrong I don’t plame it all on him. Let’s for a minute think of all of the pussified people in this country, all those who want a free raide, and are perfectly willing to let this country die to get it, it’s called socialism, and that is what Obama and all of his minions are all about.
They want all good hard working Americans to be paying the way for all the bums of this country. This is why; I’m sure you have all heard the saying nothing comes for free right?
That includes handouts from the government, when the time comes all of those people who have made a living off of the taxes that we pay will learn a very hard lesson.
The government will tell them listen to us, for all of those years we paid your way it’s tiem that you started to re-pay your debt to us.

It is a shame the tax increases are not across the board. Think about it. The reason liberals are gaining traction among the middle class is because the people are getting something for nothing! The false illusion has been created that government spending does not result in higher taxes

Wouldn’t be hard to balance the budget without tax increases: 1) Abolish all departments of the government which cause more cost to the economy than they produce good for. 2) All let go Federal workers can only receive unemployment for 36 weeks at the rate their private counterparts would recieve, not government rates. 3) Cut taxes to stimulate economic growth, (see history, Kennedy, Reagan, Bush 43.) . 4) Repeal all Obama’s executive orders and all regulations back unitl a time we had a balanced budget.
Problem solved really easy! Just need to destroy, “Hillary’s lock box” before the new Congress get’s immasculated.

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 4:12pmThis is shocking indeed, folks as you probably know Barry didn’t want to make a deal he wanted the rates to go up and they will and not just income taxes they’ll be plenty of new taxes as well.Capital gains, when you sell your house (good luck with that) and many many more taxes brought to you by a Marxist POS and a candyass congress. The Obama depression coming soon globally.

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 5:26pmCould of, Should of, Would of moment… November election 2012 feels as to have happened last spring…
To those that ‘blew off’ going to the polls… You have NO say in what is going on in the today’s…
It is not only a right to vote but YOUR civic responsibility…
This is what happens…
As James Wilson said in his 4th of July 1788 – Who is James Wilson?
James Wilson came to America from Scotland in 1765 and quickly learned the law and began to practice in PA. By the time of the Revolution, he was well-known and trusted, and was elected to represent PA in the Continental Congress.
On July 4, 1788, Wilson gave a speech to a group assembled to celebrate Independence Day and the ratification of the Constitution. The Constitution he had helped draft was just barely formally ratified – NH, the 9th state to do so, had ratified less than 2 wks earlier, and VA, one of the “do or die” states, had ratified just 4 days after NH. He was obviously proud of what he had helped craft, and just as proud that the states had accepted the invitation to a “more perfect union.”
“To speak without a metaphor; if the people, at their elections, take care to choose none but representatives that are wise and good; their representatives will take care, in their turn, to choose or appoint none but such as are wise and good also. The remark applies to every succeeding election and appointment.”
Enough said

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 4:05pmI am going to consider it a fiscal cliff party then
Why does Theblaze act like it is a bad thing? At least we get a little bit of spending cuts. The alternative is no spending cuts and tax increases
