NBC Reporter Robert Bazell Skeptical of Hillary Clintons Hospitalization

NBC News’ chief science correspondent Robert Bazell on Monday speculated that federal officials may not be telling the whole story regarding Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent hospitalization for a blood clot. Clinton was reportedly admitted to a New York hospital on Sunday after the discovery of a blood clot resulting from a concussion she sustained earlier this month.

“We really don’t know a lot about what’s going on here,” Bazell said, adding that the hospital “is not saying much.” So far, Clinton’s office has only said she is being treated with blood thinners for the blood clot. But something about that explanation didn’t sit right with the NBC reporter.

“The problem is that concussions, when they lead to blood clots — the blood clots are not usually treated with blood thinners, as they say she’s being treated,” he explained. “If she has a blood clot that occurred because she was sitting around or something, they would treat that with blood thinners, and that would be fine. But there may be more to this story that we don’t know.”

Bazell said more information should be released over the next few days. He did not speculate any further.

State Department spokesman Pillippe Reines said in a statement that Clinton is “being treated with anticoagulants and is at New York-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours.”

“Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion. They will determine if any further action is required,” he wrote.

CBS New York’s Dr. Max Gomez discussed the possible scenarios Clinton is facing.

“There are two main possibilities here. One is that she developed blood clots in her legs as a result of being on bed rest after her concussion, those would commonly be treated with anti-coagulants…A second possibility is that she developed something called a subdural hematoma, which means as a result of the blow on her head, she broke a small blood vessel on the surface of her brain, and it has been slowly leaking blood, which accumulates and forms a blood clot.”

Meanwhile, Clinton’s illness has continued to fuel conspiracy theories, some involve a traumatic “brain crisis” others involve a plane crash. And the continued absence of Clinton has people speculating whether it will keep her from testifying on Benghazi before she steps down.
