BALTIMORE (TheBlaze/AP) — The New Year wasn’t the only reason to celebrate for some Maryland residents. Same-sex couples in the state were greeted with cheers and noisemakers held over from holiday parties, as gay marriage became legal in the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line on New Year’s Day.
James Scales, 68, was married to William Tasker, 60, on Tuesday shortly after midnight by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake inside City Hall.
“It’s just so hard to believe it’s happening,” Scales said shortly before marrying his partner of 35 years.
Six other same-sex couples also were being married at City Hall. Ceremonies were taking place in other parts of the state as well.

The ceremonies follow a legislative fight that pitted Gov. Martin O’Malley against leaders of his Catholic faith. Voters in the state, founded by Catholics in the 17th century, sealed the change by approving a November ballot question.
“There is no human institution more sacred than that of the one that you are about to form,” Rawlings-Blake said during the brief ceremony. “True marriage, true marriage, is the dearest of all earthly relationships.”
Brigitte Ronnett, who also was married, said she hopes one day to see full federal recognition of same-sex marriage. Maryland, Maine and Washington state were the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote, in November, a development Ronnett said was significant.
“I think it’s a great sign when you see that popular opinion is now in favor of this,” said Ronnett, 51, who married Lisa Walther, 51, at City Hall.
Same-sex couples in Maryland have been able to get marriage licenses since Dec. 6, but they did not take effect until Tuesday.
In 2011, same-sex marriage legislation passed in the state Senate but stalled in the House of Delegates. O’Malley hadn’t made the issue a key part of his 2011 legislative agenda, but indicated that summer that he was considering backing a measure similar to New York’s law, which includes exemptions for religious organizations.

Shortly after, Archbishop Edwin O’Brien of Baltimore wrote to O’Malley that same-sex marriage went against the governor’s faith.
“As advocates for the truths we are compelled to uphold, we speak with equal intensity and urgency in opposition to your promoting a goal that so deeply conflicts with your faith, not to mention the best interests of our society,” wrote O’Brien, who served as archbishop of the nation’s first diocese from October 2007 to August 2011.
The governor was not persuaded. He held a news conference in July 2011 to announce that he would make same-sex marriage a priority in the 2012 legislative session. He wrote back to the archbishop that “when shortcomings in our laws bring about a result that is unjust, I have a public obligation to try to change that injustice.”
The measure, with exemptions for religious organizations that choose not to marry gay couples, passed the House of Delegates in February in a close vote. O’Malley signed it in March. Opponents then gathered enough signatures to put the bill to a statewide vote, and it passed with 52 percent in favor.
In total, nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 5:17pmThe gay community could have called for full legal equivalence of civil unions. They would have faced a fraction of the opposition. The reason they did not was that at least some of them also want social acceptance and moral affirmation… the courts are not the place for this. Social acceptance comes from society, but moral affirmation does not come from he legislature or the courts. The church has started using both to seek affirmation of their beliefs, and sometimes to enforce elements of their doctrines on non-believers. This both undermines the separation of church and state, and has diminished their authority in moral matters as the STATE becomes perceived as a moral arbiter. Both sides have made mistakes.
The most radical solution would be to get the STATE out of marriage altogether. Marriage is 2 things … a legal contract, and a religious ceremony. Separate the two. Contracts can be handled by others and filed with the state. Marriage can be a religious ceremony with no more legal standing than a bar mitzvah. Everyone – gay and straight – can have marriage contracts (AKA civil unions).
Full equality for everyone and marriage is a protected institution, guarded by freedom of religion etc. The “moral majority” get to keep what is essential to them, and everyone gets what they want (most).
Compromise involves hanging onto enough of what is essential to justify what you are giving up to get or keep it.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 10:51amIt isn’t a valid ‘marriage’, nor is it ‘lawful’ in regrads to the law of God. Man can and has made “lawful”, a number of practices that Jesus calls “abomination”. All such laws have no effect at all in relation to the law of God on the matter, they do show a profound stupidity and contempt for the holy and righteous judge of all the universe. Jesus is coming to “take vengeance”, and He will be too hard for those who have chosen to walk in the vanity of their own imagination, and apparently being “past feeling, have given themselves over to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.” As long as their is eternity, God has time to reckon with His enemies. He wants them to repent and live rather than perish in sin. The same goes for all adulterers (including divorce & unlawful marriage), fornication, lovers of this present world, the covetous, and so on. Without Holiness, no man will see the Lord.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 10:28amThe state of Maryland and the heathen may recognize it, but the God of the holy Bible does not recognize it.
Every nation in the history of the world that has recognized homosexuality as normal has soon after fell.
Gays make up only 2.5% of the population, but they carry 64% of the nation’s syphilis, they made up 57% of new HIV cases last year in the US, and they commit a third of the nation’s child molestations. The lesbians have the highest rate of domestic abuse, and gays have the highest suicide rates, alone with having much higher than average alcohol and drug abuse rates.
They are a sick, sinful, and diseased people.
There is a reason that one of the communist goals for bringing down America included making homosexuality seen as normal and natural. They knew it destroyed nations, and it will play a hand in destroying ours.
Thankfully, we still have homeschooling and private Christian School, where I can teach my kids Bible truth, and educate them to the reality that homosexuality is evil.

I use my heart and mind and ask myself, “is that the kind of thing a God who deserves my worship would say?” I have concluded that all of the anti-gay rubbish in the Bible is not. You may feel adrift at the thought of having to rely on yourself to distinguish between true prophecy and false, but remember that back in biblical times, before their was such a thing as an official Bible assembled by men who decided to make those choices for you, this was exactly what God demanded of all of us.

What is “reason” and where does it come from?
In the words of Jefferson’s Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom, 1779, ME 2:300, Papers 2:545, “Well aware that the opinions and belief of men depend not on their own will, but follow involuntarily the evidence proposed to their minds… Almighty God hath created the mind free, and manifested his supreme will that free it shall remain by making it altogether insusceptible of restraint… all attempts to influence it by temporal punishments… tend only to beget habits of hypocrisy and meanness, and are a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, who being lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either, as was in his Almighty power to do, but to extend it by its influence on reason alone… truth is great and will prevail if left to herself… she is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflict unless by human interposition disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and debate: errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them.”

“That which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen,”
“When the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.”

Jan. 1, 2013 at 10:32pmOur own Declaration says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident”. My belief in God does not come from the revelation or profession of other men, but from reason alone. BTW, faith is another thing, not to be confused with “belief”. I do not consider any other man to be born greater or superior to me. We are all by nature equally free and independent. We were all made in the same Image, and are all accountable to the same Creator. I detest the ludicrous presumptions of liberals who believe themselves to be morally superior or better enlightened because they alone posses or have achieved the gift of reason. They’re idiots. They pompously proclaim to be wiser because they use their heart and mind alone, so they say, without “outside influence”. What foolishness. No man lives in a bubble. They erroneously elevate the fallen state of man, and presume that man may become perfect or without fault. They’re a disgrace, and spout crap out of pure ignorance. Out of man’s heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, thefts, false witness, and perversions. They live in lala land believe that through human law we may rid the world of evil, when in fact, human laws are meant, not to do the impossible based on stupid utopian ideals, but to combat evil and right wrong (justice), to confront reality, and not hide from it. Man will never achieve peace or perfection on his own. Man’s heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 10:13amTo say that I am opposed to “same-sex marriage” is inaccurate; I am in favor of re-affirming the definition of marriage that has been operative throughout the world for centuries. The novel notion of “same-sex marriage” is not an equality issue; it is a special privilege for a tiny minority. Homosexuals already have an equal right to marry anyone of the opposite sex, which is what “marriage” means. If not for the procreative aspects of marriage, civil institutions (that is, governments) never would have had any interest in the practice in the first place. My preference is for the government to get out of the marriage business altogether. A marriage license is simply another tax.

Here is what God has to say about them.
Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in their lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves.
And even as they ignore Gods wrath on unrighteousness, God gave them over to a DEBASED mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgement of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of DEATH, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 7:34pmBlackstone’s Commentaries (1776) became the law book of the Founding Fathers. Political scientists have shown that Blackstone was one of two most frequently invoked political authorities of the Founders. Blackstone explains the Laws of Nature:
“Man, considered as a creature, must necessarily be subject to the laws of his Creator, for he is entirely a dependent being… And consequently, as man depends absolutely upon his Maker for everything, it is necessary that he should in all points conform to his Maker’s will. This will of his Maker is called the law of nature… This law of nature, being coeval (coexistent) with mankind and dictated by God Himself, is of course superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times; no human laws are of any validity, if contrary to this… And if our reason were always… clear and perfect… the task would be pleasant and easy; we should need no other guide but (the law of nature). But every man now finds the contrary in his own experience; that his reason is corrupt, and his understanding full of ignorance and error. This has given manifold occasion for the benign interposition of Divine Providence; which… hath been pleased, at sundry times and in diverse manners, to discover and enforce its laws by an immediate and direct revelation. The doctrines thus delivered we call the revealed or divine law, and they are to be found only in the Holy Scriptures.”

“The law… dictated by God Himself is, of course, superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times. No human laws are of any validity if contrary to this.” Alexander Hamilton. Feb 23, 1775
“Tis substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to every species of free Government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric.” George Washington, Farewell Address

Having some “gay” gene existing is contrary to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution (and religion). Yes, all life originated from the sea and, yes, you see what appears to be gay behavior between animals but it’s not for lust. Humans have evolved into a separate species altogether and, being self aware, we cannot be grouped in with all other life. The answer is pretty simple though: When people abandon a strict set of morals because they lack self control and nurture lust then society starts to break down.
Over a million years of evolution and mankind wants to devolve back into animals.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 1:34pmThe government was issuing licenses and performing weddings and calling it marriage a hundred years before any of us were born, and nobody ever seemed to have a problem with it until just a few years ago when they started to consider extending the service to same sex couples. Religion doesn’t own the word marriage. There are millions of straight couples in this country who were married by the state because they don’t follow any religion, or follow two different religions or for any number of other reasons. Are you telling them that they don’t have a real marriage? And if the government did get out of it, there would be gay marriage in every state. There most be a hundred religious sects in this country, there are bound to be a few who would say yes.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 7:04amMore than likely most of them will be divorced within a year. Almost every gay couple I know that ran off to other states to get married when gay marriage first became legal are now divorced. I say let gays get married in every state. Then they can enjoy splitting up all their belongings, drawn out divorce court proceedings ,and paying high lawyer fees. True equality does come with a price.

Jan. 1, 2013 at 6:40amThe lord will not be mocked. As ye sow, so shall you reap. An abomination unto the lord. I’m sure they are good people, I just dont like their life style. Not my choice, not my decision, not my having to live with their results of their choices. .
