Pope Denounces ‘Unregulated Capitalism’ in New Year’s Message

A message for 2013 from the Vatican has left many scratching their heads. According to Reuters, Pope Benedict XVI spent part of his New Year’s address talking politics– even comparing “unregulated capitalism” to “various forms of terrorism and criminality.”
Reuters writes:
Earlier in his homily, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics decried “hotbeds of tension and conflict caused by growing instances of inequality between rich and poor“.
He also denounced “the prevalence of a selfish and individualistic mindset which also finds expression [in] unregulated capitalism, various forms of terrorism and criminality“.
[...]
In his full message for the peace day, the pope called for a new economic model and ethical regulations for markets, saying the global financial crisis was proof that capitalism does not protect society’s weakest members.
He also warned that food insecurity was a threat to peace in some parts of the world and strongly reaffirmed the Church’s opposition to gay marriage. [Emphasis added]
The reaction on Twitter has varied:

Despite it all, though, the pope expressed optimism that peace will prevail in 2013.

When you can no longer send him or her down to the next government program. Then you will understand that socialism and UNREGULATED capitalism don’t work. The Pope ALWAYS talks over the heads of protestants and secular Americans, the ‘Glen Becks” of the world. Sound bite idiots!

From the Vatican’s website: http://www.news.va/en/news/pope-on-new-years-day-find-inner-peace-in-god
Here is what he said; “Although the world is sadly marked by “hotbeds of tension and conflict caused by growing instances of inequality between rich and poor, by the prevalence of a selfish and individualistic mindset which also finds expression in an unregulated financial capitalism,” as well as by various forms of terrorism and crime, I am convinced that “the many different efforts at peacemaking which abound in our world testify to mankind’s innate vocation to peace. In every person the desire for peace is an essential aspiration which coincides in a certain way with the desire for a full, happy and successful human life. In other words, the desire for peace corresponds to a fundamental moral principle, namely, the duty and right to an integral social and communitarian development, which is part of God’s plan for mankind.

Posted on January 1, 2013 at 6:18pmWhat are you talking about. Capitalist systems feed more people than any socialist or communist system throughout history. It is called charity. There is no economic system on this earth that practices unregulated capitalism. Since man has been in existence and agreed to form a governing body to be ruled by, capital and the capitalist system has had a government foundation to work within.
The Pope talks of income inequality, tell me what communist or socialist government has income equality. I guess he just wants all the masses to be poor and have the corporate and political elites like himself living in palaces with servants and all the finer things in life.

Especially if you factor in the amount of immigrants that funnel money to Mexico, and South America.

Capitalism has given citizens independence from government and the ability to survive without charity….It’s easy to understand the popes need to keep poverty and desperation alive as it is their breeding ground for gathering the majorityn of their followers.

Capitalism by nature offers everyone the opportunity to CAPITALIZE on an idea, thought and demand in the marketplace. It should be almost void of regulation so people can expand their ideas. The Pope has just given in like the HOUSE did since it was popular as most should remember the Pope is a flawed human like the rest of us. I wish someone would show us how some people out there are not capable of succeeding and why that is. I tend to those that fail have poor work ethic and talk instead of walk. Socialism will temporarily give the poor and lazy more income until those that produce either quit or move somewhere else. What progressives have suggested in the past in trial balloons is quartering the poor in the people’s houses. Forced Quartering of British troops helped lead to the American Revolution. Yet progressive are suggesting this very thing. Instead of quartering soldiers you would be forced to quarter the poor.
In Germany they have started down this slippery slope already. Of course they are more socialist & therefore more advanced than us. It is why liberals love them.

The current Pope did get rid of limbo when he was a theological lawyer. It goes against the concept of infallibility, but I’ll go with it. The concept of purgatory does not concern me overmuch
Confession does not necessarily hurt. It could be good for the soul. If the person unloads & then gets incrementally better. They are still going to be a sinner but maybe not so much. Saying that you have to have a confessor who is human that you confess to. That is a bit much. That said I do not fear the catholic church.

Who gets to decide what “social justice” means? EVERYONE should receive equal justice of opportunity based on a person’s individual character, attitude and achievements, and those individuals who can provide evidence of discrimination should receive justice in a court of law. However, a civilized society should support those who cannot support themselves through no fault of their own.

Posted on January 3, 2013 at 1:46pmTo all of the Protestant Catholic haters in the room. Lets be honest here, the problem with Protest-antism is you can’t even agree with eachother about anything (other than hating the Catholic church). If there was ONE united Protestant church I would say you have a strong argument but all that you have managed since Martin Luther is division and disagreement with eachother (over 30,000 different “Bible Based” churches with differing doctrines and beliefs from reading the same Bible) You accept the New Testament (which isn’t mentioned anywhere in scripture) that the Catholic church canonized but reject the authority of the Church that canonized it (it’s like holding and eggg and denying that chickens exist) If you can find me even ONE of these man made doctrines mentioned in scripture I’ll listen to you. 1. Sola Fide (saved by faith alone) see (James 2:24) and (Eph 5:5) and (Rom 2:7)

3. Once Saved Always Saved (aka Eternal Security) see (Heb 10:26) and (Rom 11:22) and (2 Pet 2:20)
4. Saying the “Sinners Prayer” as a means of being saved?
5. Making an “Altar Call” as a means of being saved?
6. “Accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior” ?

Organized religion is a racket. They prey on the poorest and most destitute people on the planet, promising eternal reward in the next life while seeking power in this one. All of this goes on while the clergy allows their African followers to die of starvation and AIDS, both of which could be greatly remedied by selling off even a fraction of said wealth. Instead churches keep passing around the collection baskets, week after week. Non-faith groups such as Doctors Without Borders are left to clean up the horrendous mess created by the Church with their policy against condom use. AIDS is bad, just not as bad as condoms apparently.

You know the same guy that painted the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Also the Statue is cordoned off, they try to keep people from it, not encourage them to kiss it. Under the Church is the final resting place of Saint Peter the Apostle not a vast hall of Statues. Pure gold? Try bronze removed from the Pantheon, another building in Rome given to the church be the emperor, not stolen. And indulgences were a thing of the past by the time Saint Peter’s construction. - Great another former Catholic that went to ‘catholic’ school, in other words like the rest of us that did so you received no catechisis

- http://cathapol.blogspot.com/2010/08/gargoyles-on-churches.html; next…just because someone says something doesn’t mean its actual church teaching
- First no priest who is properly formed would make a dumb statement like ‘what if God is busy’ considering hes omnipresent. Second http://www.catholicfaithandreason.org/confession-of-sins—how-biblical-is-it.html; next
- If you are praying for anyone right now stop because you are acting as a mediator, how much more effective is the prayer of a righteous man who is in heaven then? Come on you are better than this, do your home work
- First kicker is that Vatican Hill is not on of the 7 hills, second http://www.catholic.com/tracts/hunting-the-whore-of-babylon; next
- Im sure the “(the Catholic Church)” was actually right there in scripture, or are you adding to it? I wonder what St. John would say to your new inclusion? Friday, Saturday and Sunday is actually less than two days on the Jewish calendar. Friday sunset when he was allegedly buried to Sat sunset = 1 day. Sat. 6pm till before dawn on Sunday (while it was still dark) is less than twelve hours. Jesus explicitly said three days and three nights:
“For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matt. 12:40)
Besides, Jesus WAS our Passover. He was/is the fulfillment of ALL the Jewish Feasts. The feasts were really typologies pointing to Messiah. The Passover is celebrated on 14 Nisan and Jesus was buried just before sundown that day (Jn. 19:42) and on the 15th of Nisan (Wed. sundown to Thurs. sundown) the high Sabbath began, i.e., the Day of Unleavened Bread, when Christ the manna from heaven who had no sin (leaven) was wrapped in linen and buried (hidden) then resurrected (recovered and unwrapped). http://hadavar.org/drupal/book/export/html/217
One more point to consider: Three is the number of God, who is perfect, complete. If you use half days, then that wholeness is lost. Mind you, it is not just a symbolic number or time span. It is the very nature of the triune God. Jesus took our sins on the cross for three full hours as well — not one second more or one second less. God is awesome. :)

—
No. ALL our prayers are in JESUS’ NAME, meaning He and He alone is the mediator. We are mere vessels, made righteous by the blood of Jesus. Read Hebrews 7-10. You can’t be a mediator between God and man without blood. Did Mary shed her blood for you? Even if she had, it would never make you righteous because she was a sinner, like every other descendant of Adam.
There is only one Mediator in the New Covenant, and He is seated at the right hand of God. You can rationalize in your own puny head why people should pray to the dead, but it is an abomination and an affront to God, and He calls the shots not you.

Posted on January 1, 2013 at 5:38pmWell, he did also condemn ” various forms of terrorism and criminality.” Think the Pope should have spoken out much more forcefully regarding those two topics which are far more prevalent and dangerous today than ” unregulated capitalism.” Very odd word choice and focus on his part. He sounds like he is channeling Father Michael Pfleger, the social justice Chicago priest who periodically gets chastised, but like Pelosi and the other Far Left Democrats never get the boot / excommunication.

Absolutely not. Do not confuse anarchy — which is what you see in much of Africa — with what socialists and communists call “unregulated capitalism.” They hate capitalism per se, so all capitalism is unregulated in their view. The qualifier is simply used for propaganda purposes to give capitalism a negative connotation.
BTW, the Vatican is not an example of unregulated capitalism. There is no capitalism in that tiny state; just monarchical corruption.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 5:59pmSo, Vance, sounds like you know where there is “unfettered capitalism”. Where? Certainly not in the United States — Americans are very regulated. Europe even more so. What legal enterprise can you identify (and in what jurisdiction) constitutes “unfettered capitalism.”
Point I’m making isn’t that the Pope is wrong — just that he is tilting at a windmill. Or, perhaps a better way to say it is that the Pope is setting up a straw man. Capitalism is so highly regulated in the U.S. for example, that what is decried as a failure of “capitalism” is actually an example of socialism’s having infected and sickened capitalism. Good example: the housing market and “Fanny” and “Freddy” creating a bubble.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 5:12amThis is how this Cathoilc feels. I work my butt off for the salary my employer pays me and I am happy to do it. That being said I attend Mass weekly and give my 10% to the weekly offering. I also support various charities (Salvation Army, the local Rescue Mission, Humane Shelter, etc) each paycheck and amy not only happy to do it but enjoy helping others. Not ONCE have I ever heard a sermon from my Priest(s) asking the congregation to give his/her 10%. Maybe that is the problem. Even in this economy if you cannot give 10% you could at least give a dollar or so. No one wants to deny him/herself that Starbuck’s, movie, eating out, etc. That is the problem. It is NOT Capitalism. Capitalism is what has Fed MILLIONS, Capitalism has Clothed Millions, etc. I would say to the Pope “Capitalism has kept the Cathlic Church in the Business of feeding and clothing the children of God. Perhaps if the Pope did his job and urged human beings to use their OWN MONEY and not the Government’s when it comes to Charity the world would be better off

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:13amI am a Catholic. I read the Pope’s homily in it’s entirety. Below is the paragraph in which he mentions capitalism:
“Although the world is sadly marked by “hotbeds of tension and conflict caused by growing instances of inequality between rich and poor, by the prevalence of a selfish and individualistic mindset which also finds expression in an unregulated financial capitalism,” as well as by various forms of terrorism and crime, I am convinced that “the many different efforts at peacemaking which abound in our world testify to mankind’s innate vocation to peace. In every person the desire for peace is an essential aspiration which coincides in a certain way with the desire for a full, happy and successful human life.”
I live in a regulated capitalist system with a progressive income tax designed to redistribute wealth.
The unregulated capitalistic systems to me are 3rd world countries and countries like China where child labor and, in some cases, slave labor are common. The people who run these businesses are flat out greedy capitalists.
Now I don’t know if the Pope is pointing a finger at the USA. If he is, he is wrong. The USA is still the bread basket of the world. Our society is marked by individual acts of charity. That is why some of us disagree with mandated government charity.
Disagreeing with the Pope doesn’t make me a bad Catholic. I am free to disagree. The Pope’s homily is neither dogma or doctrine and does not carry papal

Sad to see that the Pope is even falling in with the social justice crowd. People give charity to help others, not the government. Oh well, if you believe that a priest can absolve you of your sins, then what did Jesus die on the cross for? That is why a lot in the mafia were/are Catholic. They can do bad all they want and as long as a priest gives the last rights before the croak, their slate is wiped clean. That is why I left the Catholic church 16 years ago, I could not resolve that a human has the power to erase sins that Jesus does. Anyway, sad to see the Pope turning towards social justice & away from true freedom.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:40amOkay…I had read the article, the full quote, and the comments but this just takes the cake…as usual, Cavallo is ignorant and a fool.
Catholics voted LESS for Obama in 2012 than they did in 2008, know the facts or keep your mouth SHUT!
54% -46% voted for Obama in 2008
51%-49% voted for Obama in 2012
That means Catholics moved 3% towards the Right…with the 40 million Catholics in the USA, that means 1.2 million more of them voted based on the teachings, the TRUE teachings of the Church, which means the “social justice” wing of the Catholic Church is losing the argument. Given that the largest group of Catholics in the USA are Hispanics, and they voted 71% for Obama, a 4% gain from 2008, that means 7% of the Catholic USA Church moved towards the Right as a whole.
Now, seeing as MORE of this country is Protestant/Non-denominational than Catholic, I think you should turn your attention to the 43% of them that voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012, NO change. How about the 30 million Evangelical/Protestant voting age citizens that either didn’t vote, in 2008 or 2012, or more importantly the 14 million of that 30 million that ARE registered and still didn’t vote in either election.
Obama only won in 2008 by 6 million votes, 5 million in 2012. Simple math will tell you, non voting Evangelicals cost McCain and Romney 2 million votes each NET. Not to mention the other 50 million non registered, non voting public.

You are right..wait…you are right…the Catholic Church does not give 10% to anyone…neither does any other church..but that is besides the point. The Catholic Church gives 100% to God, well actually MORE than 100% seeing as they have been operating at a deficit for some years.
Now if you want to be technical, which I know some of you legalistic Pharisees are, then the truth is that the Catholic Church gives 100% of the NET away every year to Catholic orphanages, shelters, abuse programs, family counseling, etc. Once they pay all their utility bills, property taxes, salaries to lay people that work for the Church worldwide, the meager stipends to the clergy (unlike the Evangelical pastors that make 6 or 7 figures – not that I begrudge them their salaries), and the interest on their debts…Once ALL of that is done…the Catholic Church STILL gives away EVERY LAST DIME and then some.
Now before we get the same IDIOTIC comments about the “whore of Babylon” or the “pedophiles”, why don’t you pull the plank from your own eye. The rate of pedophiles in the Catholic church is no higher that the same in any society, denomination, or sect, in fact it is lower. Same with any type of “sexual” misconduct. Next, why don’t you check the background of your sources before quoting them blindly, I believe following your “false prophets” is not what God commanded.
