Furious Chris Christie Rips John Boehner Over Canceled Sandy Vote in Heated Presser
A furious New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie unloaded on House Speaker John Boehner Wednesday following the cancellation of a promised vote for Hurricane Sandy relief, saying the people of his state were “played last night as a pawn” by his own Republican Party.
“There is only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims,” Christie said after the 11th-hour decision to scrap the vote. “The House majority and their speaker, John Boehner. This is not a Republican or Democratic issue. National disasters happen in red states and blue states and states with Democratic governors and Republican governors. We respond to innocent victims of natural disasters not as Republicans or Democrats, but as Americans. Or at least we did until last night.”
Christie said he had been given personal assurance that the $60 billion aid bill would go before the House on Tuesday. The Senate passed the measure last week. With Congress’ term coming to a close on Thursday, members will have to start from scratch to help the hundreds of thousands affected by the megastorm.
“Last night, the House majority failed the most basic test of leadership and they did so with callous disregard to the people of my state,” Christie said. “Our people were played last night as a pawn. That’s why people hate Washington.”
Christie said he has yet to be given a “substantive, credible reason” for why the bill wasn’t put to a vote. He said he tried to reach Boehner four times Tuesday night to find out what happened, but “he did not take my calls.”
“Sixty-six days and counting [since Sandy],” Christie said. “Shame on you. Shame on Congress.”
Christie’s criticisms echoed those of Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who said earlier on Wednesday that New Yorkers shouldn’t give a penny to House Republicans after Tuesday’s “knife in the back.”
But National Review’s Daniel Foster and Betsy Woodruff each pushed back against the outrage that has erupted since Tuesday night. Foster wrote:
[T]he Sandy “relief” bill is really a Sandy “recovery” bill. It’s about the size and shape of the second wave of Sandy spending, which can and should be much more deliberate than the the first wave. The first wave of Sandy spending is already happening. Is it happening quickly or efficiently enough? There is no such thing as quickly or efficiently enough for the people of Staten Island or Seaside Heights, but it’s nevertheless safe to assume that if you think private charities and emergency responders aren’t allocating efficiently, you’re probably going to be disappointed by Congress, too. In fact, according to an analysis released by Sens. Coburn and McCain, “64 percent of the $60.4 billion in ‘emergency’ spending in this legislation will not be spent for nearly two years.
And among some of the provisions in the Senate-passed bill:
•$2 million to repair damage to the roofs of museums in Washington, D.C., while many in Hurricane Sandy’s path still have no roof over their own heads.
•$150 million for fisheries as far away from the storm’s path as Alaska.
•$125 million for the Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Watershed Protection program, which helps restore watersheds damaged by wildfires and drought.
•$20 million for a nationwide Water Resources Priorities Study.
•$15 million for NASA facilities, though NASA itself has called its damage from the hurricane ‘minimal.’
•$50 million in subsidies for tree planting on private properties.

No matter how you rationalize the .61 cents for every dollar New Jersey pays is tens of billions more than it gets back. As far as farmers, New Jersey has plenty as well. If the Democrats would simply CUT SPENDING – towards some of their “entitlement programs” – balance the budget and spend only what is taken in, perhaps the money would be available to help these well needed citizens! We can’t keep borrowing from China – 46 cents on every dollar!

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 4:42pmHow about the outrage at the politicians that saw this as an opportunity to get some reelection street cred for “bringing home the bacon”???
THATS why there wasn’t a vote on the spending bill. Don’t pollute the Sandy relief bill with crap that has little to nothing to do with the immediate need of financial relief by victims of Hurricane Sandy.
If Alaskan fisheries need money for something, they should get it on the merit of that specific need. They shouldn’t use, what would otherwise be an automatic “Yes” vote opportunity, like helping out real people in need from Hurricane Sandy to get a cash payout for their pet project. Why is this so hard to understand?
They do this with teacher pay raises, programs aimed at the elderly, and the funding the US Soldiers….congress pimps their vote out for sale by demanding a couple million here & there for pet projects that have NOTHING to do with some bill that has emotional appeal among the US citizenry. When responsible politicians vote it down because it’s filled with unrelated pork, they get drug through the mud by the media for not caring about teachers, the soldiers, old people, or victims of natural disasters. DISGUSTING!

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 4:58pmI think all states get back less than they send to DC (district of corruption). One reason for this is pork.
Another reason is the number of federal workers (77 percent of the new jobs created in the last four years were public and they just got raises). Even the poor poor victims of Katrina, that Bush tried to kill, remember them? All the federal and charitable donations appropriated haven’t been doled out yet.
That amount would have given all those victims hundreds of thousands $ each. Where did it go? This is the biggest problem with our country, throwing money around like confetti, only now even the underpaid NYC Dept. of Sanitation couldn’t clean up the trillions of pieces of this “give everybody more of anything they want shut up and go away social candy”. Boohoo my multimillion dollar house that I pay really really high property taxes on has been ruined by weather. How bout if Dumberg and NJ Doughboy gave you enough tax relief so you could by flood insurance duh. Maybe you could not rebuild and turn over your property to the UN. Maybe the next time you vote dumb-ss you will think about how good you felt about not being exposed to 16 oz. soda pop. Cowboy up citizens or shut up.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 6:11pm@Deuteronomy22,
Your 61cents metric comes from faulty data. It was from 2007 I believe (?). It it total government EXPENDITURES by state, not just transfers and such. So, for example, if Texas (who was at 94 cents by the way) has numerous air bases and army bases as well as companies producing military hardware as well as selling oil/gas to say the Strategic Oil Reserve then the payments to Texas are going to be huge…which they were. This makes it even more remarkable given the amount of taxes we pay. We are pretty wealthy here I suppose.
Now, a different story exists for say Mississippi. They are poor as heck and are in a negative status (2.02 if you and I are on the same study). They don’t have the wealth to pay in and don’t make stuff the government wants and don’t really have much military.
So there is New Jersey, don’t know the story in terms of what the government spends there. I know Ft. Dix is closed since I was one of the last basic training cycles there. But the point is that the 61 cents doesn’t tell you what you are implying that it does. It isn’t simply welfare and pork and whatnot. But, hey nice try. Lying with statistics is always more effective than lying outright I think.

That seems pretty steep, would we be paying to rebuild towns and communities which are situated in a flood plane or which are always at risk in a hurricane, then these people should have had insurance. There is a lot of room for BS in a check for 50 billion, a windfall? A late Christmas package, in days gone by the country had more money to give a state but today times are different. You live on the coast you have to know you are going to have a storm every now and then. I mean really it’s such a small state how much money do they need, the home owners should have had insurance and the businesses as well, but 50 billion with a B no. I think they look at the last state who had some big disaster and say YEAH we need whatever they got and roll the dice to see if we will go for it.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 4:56pmYou’re missing the point…..it’s not about a return on the money Jersey sends to the fed government. It’s about stopping an appropriation policy that has this country in the tight spot it’s in.
Politicians use sensitive issues (pay raises for teachers, funding for programs aimed at the elderly, funding for soldiers, victims of natural disasters) to load up with unrelated spending for their own pet projects so that they can show their constituents “Look what I’ve done for you lately” in effort to get reelected.
Don’t like the fact that Guantanamo Bay Prison is getting funding from Sandy Relief? You must hate NY victims of Hurricane Sandy!
Don’t like a DC museum is getting funding to replace a roof that was damaged BEFORE Hurricane Sandy? You must hate people still without power in NJ!
Don’t like the fact some politician pimped their vote out in a Teacher Pay Raise Bill in exchange for 10 mill for some urban development project in California? You must hate Teachers!
See how that works? It’s disgusting!
If money is needed for Alaskan fisheries, it should be able to get the money on it’s own merits. If we need money allocated to a Water Resource Priorities Study, those people supporting that program should be able to justify the spend on it’s own merits. Don’t hold those victims in NY & NJ hostage so some sleeze bag politician can pad their own reelection campaign.

And they refuse to admit they screwed up. You know its bad when Jersey is being treated like Alabama or Texas after a natural disaster. How has Christie not dropped a few pounds from all that rebuilding in Jersey, his historic precious shoreline?? Where are the UNIONS???Better hop to it big boy, start cleaning it up on your own with capable “UNION” workers.
If you wait for Barry to help, you may as well let the sand and ocean reclaim it, cause the help is never going to come. What a Jersey dumb *ss!!

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 3:26pm“There is only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims,” Christie said after the 11th-hour decision to scrap the vote. “The House majority and their speaker, John Boehner.”
Really?
Seems like I remember when emergency relief workers showed up from all over the country
they were greeted by mobs of NY & NJ UNION WORKERS who threatened and berated them
before turning them away.
You mean those Union maggots arent getting it done?
Christie why dont you just go call your Chocolate Candy Man in the White House. All he has to do is sign an executive order.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 4:13pmEvery word spoken by any politician is just for show. Christie is just getting in his “sound bite” so he can tell the useful idiots how he fought for them to get “help.” I actually think those who
got “blown away” probably deserve some help – but as usual, the elite elected want to make sure they help out their buddies who give them campaign donations so they can continue to “show off” how much they care about spending other people’s hard earned money.
What a load on both sides of the isle – The Dems are the biggest criminals while the Repubs are most likely to get fried by the lying MSM.
How’s that ‘Hope and Change’ working out for all the taxpaying suckers now?
We need a new tax on people who do not pay any tax by cutting their welfare and entitlements by at least 10% – then they will feel much better about paying their ‘fair share’ like the rest of us!
