Have You Seen the Graphic Mass Shooting Reenactment Video Being Promoted by the State of Alabama? (Plus: How the Media Is Getting the Story Wrong)

The Alabama Department of Homeland Security is receiving quite a bit of press surrounding a video it released in an effort to educate the public about active shooter scenarios.

The clip, entitled “Run Hide Fight,” is a dramatic reenactment that showcases steps one should take in the event of an emergency situation. While some outlets such as the Associated Press and Gawker are reporting that “the video’s release is in direct response to the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary,” the active shooter video was published well before the horrific tragedy.

TheBlaze spoke with Jeremy King, deputy communications director for Gov. Robert Bentley’s office on Wednesday in an effort to clarify the video’s origins. King explained that the clip, despite getting a plethora of attention this week, was already being distributed by the state’s Homeland Security department before the Connecticut shooting. An upload date on the original clip verifies this as well (it was uploaded Nov. 5; the shooting unfolded on Dec. 14).

“The Alabama Department of Homeland Security was already taking active steps to engage the public in ways to deal with an active shooter [before Sandy Hook],” he said. “There were efforts [aimed at] working with law enforcement [and] training — those efforts were already underway.”

Among the provisions already being publicized at the time was a hot-line that residents could use to report suspicious activity. King did note that Gov. Bentley ordered a more coordinated, strategic plan following the Connecticut shooting — something that the state announced in a press release on Dec. 17. However, steps were already being taken to engage professionals and the public on these key issues.

In preparing for the formal long-range plan to help all facets of the public deal with an active shooting situation, a press release from last month outlined the three top priorities:

  • Continue and expand training for law enforcement in how to respond to and combat an active shooter event
  • Engage the private sector in sharing information, and educate the general public on how to respond to an active shooter event
  • Continue work with the Alabama Department of Education, utilizing the Virtual Alabama system, which makes school safety plans immediately accessible to first responders

The release mentions the video as well as a web site where the clip is embedded. King previously told the Associated Press that the video was originally produced by the Houston Police Department and that it was repackaged for Alabama with an introduction added in by state Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier.

Throughout TheBlaze’s interview, King corrected the Gawker and the AP account that the “Run Hide Fight” video was released in response to the Connecticut shooting. The AP story read:

Although the video was made before the Connecticut shootings, Collier said it was originally scheduled to be distributed in January. But that was moved up because of the shooting at the elementary school.

Collier said the video will be offered for training purposes to law enforcement agencies. It will also be used to help train education officials and private employers.

As already noted, though, the video, which depicts a workplace shooting, has been available since Nov. 5 on the Homeland Security agency’s YouTube page — thus, it was not released as a result of the shooting. It continues to be advertised on the state government’s web site, where a list of tips about how to handle a dangerous situation is also presented.

@MONKEYBEAGLE I’d say their demographic appears to be correct. Unfortunately it seems to be white males between the ages of 18-30 committing these mass shootings. It seems that blacks are targeted shootings, not at random. I’m unsure of, however I may have missed it, the last time I heard of a mass shooting committed by a black guy?

I think the video is good and that true, while all situations are different, the basic premise is still good for most people to understand: Run, Hide, Fight.

I am surprised they didn’t portray the maniac with an AR15 or AK47 or some other such demonized rifle. But all in all, the video portrays what I think will help people should they be unfortunate enough to be involved in such a situation and without a gun themselves with which to fight back.

I did find interesting the choice of statute numbers written on the door of the building:
(I couldn’t read it all, but here’s what I could read):

      “Pursuant to section 30.06, persons
(trespass by holder of a licence
      a concealed handgun), a
      licensed under subchapter H, (
      Government code (concealed
Law), may not enter this property

30.06? Hmm. Interesting. You’d think they could have chosen a different statute number :)

Now that attention has been drawn to this video, it will have to be amended by the Obama administration. This video does not represent the views of the Obama administration. It will be edited and re-released under the title “Run, Hide, Wait, and Die” replacing the admonition of “fight” which is too violent with “Wait” which will be explained as “wait for the police to show up and stand around outside unable to enter the crime scene of an active shooter until all the shooter either runs out of bullets or takes their own life.

If you look carefully the ‘federally approved 30.06 sign’ is at the front door. That means if you carry a weapon inside this facility, you are breaking the law. I would imagine if you KILLED THIS GUY before he killed lots of people, you WOULD be arrested, but even the left wing media would have to label you a hero.

I find it interesting that this video was produced basically for the Houston PD to show to Texans. And in this video they give four ‘killed/wounded’ stats that total to 72 killed/86 wounded. I’m pretty sure in each incident a good guy with a gun would have resolved the bad guy with a gun very quickly and made those numbers non existent. The problem is NOT GUNS. It’s BAD PEOPLE.

A permit to carry concealed will not help you in federal, state, or commercial “Unarmed Victim Zones”. If you are a law abiding citizen, you will not carry in these zones. As a hunter, I hunt where the game is located in large numbers, easy to access, and is the least risky. Psychopaths do the same and seek out these UVZ’s for the greatest potential for success.

I have tested the effectiveness of Gun Free School Zone laws and found that neither the signage or the printed law will stop a bullet.I then placed the printed law in front of the GFSZ sign and fired a single shot of 7×39, resulting in a complete failure to protect anything behind them. Please refer to my study on the effectiveness of restraining orders as protection against firearms, knives, or physical battery.

I think federal offices have been gun free since about the Carter Administration. I know of a person who was allowed to carry a pistol for personal protection but had to lock it in a box and leave it with the government security officer while he was working on government property. He retrieved the pistol after his shift and before leaving the facility.

They left out the two most important parts: be mindful of your surroundings and remain calm. Those two elements will dictate your tactics more often than not. Something else to keep in mind is that most first responders are often at least 10 mintues away. Running and hiding only serve yourself and give the active shooter that 10 minutes to attack others. Training yourself to be prepare to tactically engage an active shooter, while puts you at risk, buys time for others to escape and first responders to arrive. It also provides an opportunity to eliminate the threat more quickly.

Please note that I said to train yourself to do such a thing. As a former soldier, I can tell you that actively training for all possibilities is what gives our soldiers the edge in combat. We prepare ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally for anything that we might encounter. This is more than merely taking a handgun to the range for you CCP people out there. Find a range with a tactical course. In your office, come up with a plan with the other people and do drills monthly.

Running will get you shot in the back. Hiding is only an option if you are not near where the shooting starts and you can lock a door between you and shooter. My choice is a 9mm concealed carry which gives me a fighting chance. In my not so humble opinion this video will result in unnecessary deaths.

Many office buildings do not allow concealed carrying, as was the case in the scenario in the video. In those situations, evade and attack strategies become necessary. Simply running, except for initial cover, does only expose the back. Being aware of the laws and regulations that govern your workplace and coming up with a legal and effective plan is the most prudent way to prepare. I know many people who keep baseball bats in their cubicals.

Life is about choices. My workplace does not allow concealed carry, yet I carry every day. Carrying on private property that is posted no carry in the state I live in is not a criminal offense. It only becomes a criminal offense if they find out I have a gun and refuse to leave after I have been asked to do so. Could I be fired if it is found that I have a gun on my employers property? Yes. I have made the choice to be armed to protect myself and others. Losing my job is inconsequential compared to knowing that I left my gun at home and could not protect those I care for.

Read Thomas Hobbes’ 1651 Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil. Written during the English Civil War (1642–1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and situations identified with a state of nature and the famous motto Bellum omnium contra omnes (“the war of all against all”) could only be averted by strong central government.

Sad that we have to reteach human instinct to humans, but if it helps I guess it’s the right thing to do.

You can’t teach instincts or courage. People either have them or they don’t. In a situation like that there is no time to think. People aren’t going to be able to try to remember the cheesy acronym they were taught to help them remember what to do in what order. They’ll instinctively react or they’ll end up an easy target.

RIGHT. Spend money on Training Films, but not on actual Security. It’s the prefect Government way. Scare all the Kids and use them as a Tool to eventually ban ALL Guns in AmeriKa.
    So long Second Ammendment.

We need more signs that say gun free zone on them. That would have stoped him! Crank out the printing presses, we will show those criminals whos boss! Print those signs! Make them big enough so those criminals can see that they cant bring a gun into a building. Really its a simple fix you knowThen we can follow al sharpton’s advice and put up signs that ban knives!!! Good job AL…keep us safe!

@GodStuff, which law would that be, please? In Wisconsin there is no state statute generally prohibiting a law abiding citizen openly carrying a firearm weapon, not pistol or long gun.

Do not mistake law enforcers abusing their discretion for law. The law is an ass that lawyers ride to work, don’t be one.

Glennda claims to be a Marine. I have a hard time believing that a Marine or former marine could be so stupid. Their statement of service rang hollow also. It was odd. They didn’t state it like a normal veteran would.

He cannot state what “MEW” he was in.

Well, damn, I’m screwed if someone was to come into my workplace and shoot… there’s a single person at a time turnstile that requires a scanner card to enter/exit. (unless there’s a fire, then it should release). Though, oh wait… I’m in Canada. Although, it’s not too uncommon to see see co-workers carrying mock guns from time to time… we’re a game company. http://www.cnbc.qr.net/j36H/
