‘Jesus Generation’: See Why 60,000+ Students & Pastors Are Gathering in Atlanta This Week

For all the talk surrounding the alleged death of religion, one would assume that interest in spiritual themes is anemic at best. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. While the proportion of Americans who count themselves as religiously-unaffiliated is on the rise, there’s still a great deal of interest in exploring faith and religion.
Consider the annual “Passion” conference, which is set to break its own attendance record this year. With 60,000 students and preachers slated to head to Atlanta to take part in the four-day Christian-themed event, it’s impossible to dismiss the ever-intense devotion that many still have to faith and religious structures.
As The Christian Post notes, the event’s purpose is focused around “making Jesus famous and fighting modern-day slavery.” Some of the biggest and most popular orators and faith-based musicians will address and perform for the massive audience at the Georgia Dome, as the collective group invokes faith to contend with complex, modern-day issues. The Post has more about the festivities, which began on Tuesday night and will extend through Friday:
In what will be the largest single Passion gathering in North America since the Passion movement began in 1995, attendees will hear from dynamic Christian speakers including Louie Giglio, John Piper, Beth Moore, Francis Chan, Judah Smith, and Gary Haugen. Worship through music will also be an integral component of the conference, and lead musicians include Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels, Kristian Stanfill, Charlie Hall, David Crowder, Lecrae, and Jesus Culture.
The majority of conference participants are students and young professionals ages 18-25, along with youth ministry pastors and church leaders attending with their groups. In addition, over 2,500 volunteers – called “Door Holders” – have committed to serve during the conference with everything from registration and ushering to production and logistics.
On the conference’s web site, Pastor Louie Giglio, founder of the Passion movement and a faith leader at Passion City Church in Atlanta, Ga., notes that the event is intended to “see a generation stake their lives on what matters most.” Naturally, from Giglio’s perspective, this sentiment is centered around a belief in Christianity and its central figure, Jesus Christ.
Here’s a promo for Passion 2013:
“Passion is more than a conference. More than an event. More than a feeling,” the web site proclaims. “Passion is you and me saying goodbye to lesser things and saying yes to the One whose name is above every name.”
So far, the movement has been highly successful. The first conference, held in 1997 in Austin, Texas, included 2,000 people. While large-scale in its own regard, this year’s expected 60,000 shows monumental growth (and 2013 is up quite a bit over 2012′s 42,000 attendee number). In addition to the annual event, there are also tours, regional gatherings and other related outreach mechanisms.

The Passion 2013 conference isn’t just about feel-good sermons and music that will enrich attendees. In addition to these attributes, the event is aimed at ending human trafficking — a horrific phenomenon that traps and exploits millions of people across the globe.
The conference is partnered with numerous anti-slavery groups and, during the 2012 initiative, more than $3.3 million was raised through the event to help stop trafficking. Attendees are also helping the poor and homeless, as they collect towels and socks and donate them to homeless shelters in the South.
You can watch the main sessions of the Passion 2013 conference for free (here’s the schedule) on a special live stream web site that has been setup for those who cannot attend. And be sure to find out more about Passion 2013 here.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 3:18pmOn not misinterpreting the words of Jesus, throughout he spoke of knowing the spirit by receiving it, that it was the Father in Him speaking His own words. It is in John, chapters 1-17, his farewell prayer at his last Passover. The other gospels say this too. He said it in many ways, many words, so people listening or following him might hear. As for changing the world, he said to the most learned scriptural scholar, you must be born over again to see the kingdom of heaven. Even upon the cross he left the Holy Spirit to flow throughout the world and enter into us. We live because he lives.
Is their “passion” seeking to receive the Holy Spirit of Christ? To know him? Did not Jesus say, “Ask and you shall receive that your joy may be complete.”
To me, it doesn’t matter so much how someone asks, but that they do.
Christianity has changed and grown over the many centuries. A Catholic bishop decided there’d only be 4 gospels because there are only 4 cardinal points: north, south, east and west. Emperor Constantine elevated God into the heavens away from man and created the Trinity. What is the Christian doctrine? The early church was made of groups in different places who had many ways, not one. So who are we to judge another if in his heart he seeks to know God? Jesus reminded us of scripture, ‘Judge not lest ye be judged.” He told his disciples who didn’t get it, “Love one another. If there is this love among you then the world will know you are my disciples in t

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 3:33pmIf Jesus came to them, and they felt and received his presence and spirit, should we not rejoice? For a church is not a denomination or building. He is building the temple of God within men and women. “My father has many mansions,” he said in his farewell words. He told us he was going there on purpose to prepare a place for us, that we and those who through their words put their faith in him would be with him where he is. And they know his voice and be his flock too.

If there is but One God the Father and One Jesus Christ, how do supposed Christians believe that their are thousands of paths back to God? God will no more accept ordinances like baptism performed by unauthorized officiators than the state acknowledges marriages performed by someone without authority.
People claim to believe in God, but deny the power required and possessed by One Faith…..the Faith led by Jesus Christ.

I’m always amused by Christians who seem to construe non-belief as the foundation for organizational group-thought. Sure, there are atheists and agnostics who belong to groups and take it seriously and wear their non-belief on their sleeves and follow those who champion their beliefs, but most agnostics or atheists simply don’t subscribe to religious or mythological beliefs. End of story.

Be a BEREAN Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
The whole point of the gospel (Romans 10:9-10 7 1 Cor 15:1-4) is to spread the truth in spite of a FALLEN WORLD.
We as Christians are not ordered to change an already condemned world. It is not the Christians task to try and change the fallen world. We are to give the gospel and out of this fallen world will rise the church, the bride of Christ
This conference is emergent church new age satanic garbage and nothing more

What they don’t know is regardless of whether or not any of us here in this fallen world repent and believe in the Gospel, a whole perfect, heavenly host serves and worships the Lamb night and day. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords does not desire to be “famous”, even though His Word will endure for eternity, and by Him, through Him and for Him everything was created. Unless they preach the Gospel and remission of sin through Jesus Christ, I’m worried that the Holy Spirit will be miles away. God bless brother.

As I type this we have Isaiah 17:1 & Isaiah 19 in the process of being fulfilled and these two prophecies lead into Zech 12 & Psalm 83.
I believe that the resurrection/rapture( 1 Thes 4:13-18, 1 Cor 154:50-55, Rev 3;10) will take place prior to the fulfillment of Psalm 83
I am actually against this event because it is pseudo Christianity and is emergent church new age garbage.
What matters is not the end of slavery, what matter is the following
Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
1 Cor 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
In this cursed world we will always have the poor and slavery and denigration, hate, until Christ returns and changes it.

No amount of money they raise will stop slavery.
I as a Christian have helped people in my local area but this social gospel is not THE GOSPEL. No where in scriptures do you find the Christ or the apostles doing these things now do you.
If these people really want to help, then raise three million dollars to smuggle in bibles to the middle east.
Do you even read or understand what the bible teaches. Why did Christ take the expensive bottle of perfume and sell it for the poor? That was JUDAS and look what he really was.
So tell me, how much money will actually make it to the slaves and how many will it free.

Yes, conferences such as this do tend to be very emotional, but I think they can also encourage young adult Christians to keep on the path less traveled. And, the anti-slavery focus of this particular conference is very informative…a lot of the first timers in my kids’ group last year had no idea of the scope of the problem. One of my younger daughter’s best friends has become heavily involved in anti-slavery causes due to her exposure to the issue at Passion.
A businessman in our town has contributed to at least two young adult church groups to assist first timers in attending.

And remember when he became angry over the “money changers” doing their business at the temple? Or how about the time when He was in the Garden of Gesthamane when he sweat blood asking the Father if this cup could pass before him..or on the cross when He said..Eli Eli lama sabachthani? When the Holy Spirit is involved..it’s going to be emotional..Where 2 or more are gathered in My name..there I will be also.. As far as the bands being there..best worship music I’ve ever heard is from Jesus Culture..You Won’t Relent..with Kim Walker Smith and Chris Quilala on Youtube live..and also Show Me Your Glory with Kim Walker Smith both of Jesus Culture..Until one experiences God’s glory (his presence) for themselves..they will not realize how emotional it is..I never realized how at one you can become with God until I realized the importance of worshipping Him with music..

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:42am“The path less traveled?”
I never understand when religious people make comments like this.
One of my friend’s kids wrote a short paragraph in it and she said something along the lines of, “why does this world continue to alienate and persecute religious people?”
Do you know how many Christians there are? How can you then say that it’s the “road less traveled?”
This world is made up primarily of religious people, so any alienation or persecution is likely coming from…….wait for it……other religious people.
It’s something in the religious mindset to have a majority and still claim persecution.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:44amAll things, including our intellect AND our emotions are to be used in worshiping the Lord. David danced emotionally before the Lord and his wife criticized him to her own shame. The key isn’t whether there is emotion or not (how could there not be if you understand what has been done for us), but if it is sincere and from the heart. The worshipers God desires are those who worship in the Spirit and in truth. That is the acceptable sacrifice to the Lord. Just like our minds need to be transformed so do our emotions. Not eliminated just brought under the control of the Lord and his word, but they are to be a part of our relationship with him. Reading psalms one quickly begins to see and understand that our relationship with God is not stoic. Thank you….

SLEAZYHIPPOs ILLEGITIMATE OFFSPRING
Posted on January 2, 2013 at 2:11pm@ MOD…while your comments have some merit, I think the problem comes when we begin to confuse “religious” versus true followers of Christ. The “religious” are who crucified Christ. Often religious pride allows the “religious” to justify all kinds of evil while believing they are doing God a service. It is the true followers of Christ, not those who call themselves Christians necessarily (many are nominal at best), that will be, as promised by Christ himself persecuted to lesser and greater extents. Jesus stated that if the world hated him then it will hate those who follow closely after him. Now some bring hatred not because they act like Christ, but like the religious of his day, theirs has been earned and doesn’t profit them anything in the sight of God. Others, however, will be hated because they proclaim his truth about sin, repentance, judgment, and salvation. In this regard, Jesus himself said that broad is the road to destruction (and many religious people are on it), narrow is the road that leads to eternal life and few find it. There is such a thing as false ministers, followers, and churches as well as teachings. But don’t think I am playing the martyr please, I should rejoice when hated or persecuted for proclaiming his truth and that I have been counted worthy to suffer for His name’s sake. Also, I am humbled and grieved realizing I too was once a persecutor much in the same way Paul was before his conversion. Truly, I suffer very little, Tha

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 9:24amHow wonderful! I remember the JESUS MOVEMENT of the early 1970′s. It was an awesome time to be alive in HIS WORD and in THE WAY. I would love to see this happen again one more time, a turning of AMERICA back to GOD living the way HE planned for us— HOLY and GODLY— focused on HIM. It makes all the difference. HE makes all the difference.
GOD BLESS and PROTECT all involved with this project. May GOD’s HOLY POWER rest on, in and around you these days and beyond. In JESUS’ SWEET and MIGHTY NAME, amen.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 9:44amPeople seem to think the drop in religious attedance and turning from Jesus. Fact is the drop in orginized church goers is a turn away from the industry of religion Not turning from Christ. Too many false prophets have been caught building mansions on profits of bilking the poor. Fact is most religious leaders even in local churches feel it’s acceptable to collect a large salary in the name of God. God commanded me to buy a Benz. and a 15 rooms home for me and my wife. **** anyone see the 10,000,000 dollar mansion in an exclusive gated neighborhood that Rev. Wright just had given to him by the church…..Religion is dead but the word of Christ is strong.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:45pmI see Mod is extra sensitive and whiny today.
As for religion dying away. 31.2% of the U.S. population claims to pray more than once a day. Fifty-nine percent of respondents stated that they pray at least once a day. 122 million people attend religious services in the U.S. on a typical weekend, and more than 500 million pieces of Scripture are distributed annually. If that’s dying away, then we have different defintions of the word dying.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 8:46amThis will be an emotion filled event – the Christian spiritual life has NOTHING to do with emotion. 99% of Christians in the USA have no clue what the spiritual life is and the result: well just watch the news. As goes the believer in Christ – so goes the USA.

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 10:19amDUKE, of course the Christian spiritual life involves emotion. God designed us with having emotions! Maybe it’s more accurate to say that as Christians our faith (and practice of it) should never be dependent on our emotions?

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 8:45amThose pesky Christians still haven’t learned yet,I am your ruler and will be for many many years. As you know I’m working night and day to remove God from your society completely and when I’m successful your society will be thoroughly destroyed. That’s been me and dear old dad’s plan for you all along,he’s looking up at me right now so proud of the destruction I have visited on you.
