An 18-year-old spent New Year’s Day in jail after a Facebook post tipped police officers off about his drunken hit-and-run accident in Astoria, Ore. the night before.
At approximately 1 a.m., Astoria police discovered evidence indicating that two cars had been hit on 5th Street, KGW.com reports. Later on New Year’s Day, officers were sent messages by two separate people who provided the following Facebook post by 18-year-old Jacob Cox-Brown:
“Drivin drunk… classsic ;) but to whoever’s vehicle i hit i am sorry. :P.”
After reading the post and very sincere apology, officers made their way to Cox-Brown’s house and found a car that had damage matching that of the victims’ vehicles.
While he escaped a very costly DUI charge, the teen was charged with two counts of failing to perform the duties of a driver.

Jan. 4, 2013 at 1:03pmAs a Juvenile Probation Officer we have seen this many a time. It definately makes our job easy as far as finding leads and tracking down perpatrators, but after all is said and done the hard work starts when it comes time to take the buggers to court. As you see, by the young man in the stories own admission he was drunk and he ran into someones vehicle. His charge however was failing to perform the responsible duties of a driver; Twice. So it is not just the fault of our youth, but the fault of our society because we have allowed it to slide to this extent. There can be a lot said for the old proverb: “Spare The Rod, Spoil the Child”. We’ve made our own bed and now we are forced to sleep in it.

Jan. 5, 2013 at 10:11amYour grammar leaves a lot to be desired. You would think that a Juvenile Probation Officer would even know how to spell simple words like “definitely” or “perpetrator”. The rest of the comment is completely illegible. My third grader writes better than you, sir! Another living example of the dumbing-down of America.

You sound just like my uber progressive elitist cousin who is a High School englishteacher. When ever he cant argue against a conservative viewpoint he goes after grammer or just tries to mire the debate/arument with a college aquired vocabulary. To me that is just another example of the dumbing down of America

Jan. 4, 2013 at 12:32pmIt goes to the same point of Glenn’s guest last night, “kids” or these prolonged adolescents’ have not been taught common sense thinking or the value of life and equate reality too simulation.
While the vast majority can cope with these issues thanks to parenting or mentors but for those who fall through the cracks, well we have these incidents or worse like the school tragedies.
The answer is simple, better teachers and a return to the traditional family structure, whenever possible. It’s been proven that a government can not raise a child… and good Lord, please keep these so called “Experts” who don’t have children…!

Jan. 4, 2013 at 9:10amFunny story. I can’t help but wonder though how long it will be before someone develops an algorithm to detect crimes, or the hint of a crime, or the psychological profile of a future criminal and uses it to scan social media looking for people to detain, arrest and investigate. Then again, they probably already are.

Jan. 4, 2013 at 7:05amWe have already played the banning of alcohol and drug game in this nation and it didnt and isnt playing out so well. Prohibition of alcohol only drove it under ground and gave rise to the gangsters who bootlegged it and killed thousands of people in the process. Much as prohibition of drugs is now giving rise to the cartels and common street peddlers who in turn kill thousands of people in the process. The police in turn have gone from public servants being issued a shotgun and a pistol to now being hard to differentiate between the military and police. I know it sounds radical and people cant fathom a world where people are allowed to put whatever they want into their body but I support legalization of all the stuff you listed. I urge you to look at what the Dutch study showed after a decade of legalization of marijuana. They concluded “We succesfully made marijuana boring” There up and coming adutls did not want and had not tried marijuana when it was readily available. Just the same as most teens do not smoke even though its only a convenience store away. Marijuana is 70% of the drug cartels multi billion dolllar profits. Imagine wiping that out overnight through legalization. The price would no longer be black market prices and would settle in the area of common cigarette prices. And for the record I do not do drugs, have any desire whatsoever to do drugs, and would not do drugs even if they were legal
