Now that Newsweek is no more, where are we supposed to go for controversial (or — at the very least — thought-provoking) magazine covers?
Apparently, Bloomberg Businessweek has decided to fill that void. Here’s their post-“fiscal cliff” magazine cover:
However, although many will probably agree with the magazine’s message, Business Insider’s Joe Wiesenthal takes umbrage with its depiction of Congress as a bunch of crying babies.
“[I]t’s inaccurate to depict the Congress as being all babies,” he writes. “A lot of Congressmen on both sides of the aisle are adults trying to make deals, and look out for the interests of their constituents.”
“That being said, there is a pretty sizable faction of Fiscal Fanatics that thinks it’s beneficial to go to the edge of a government shutdown/default. And they think that unless they get 100% of want they want, then they’ve done a complete sellout. Baby mentality. After all, the Fiscal Cliff deal preserved the Bush tax cuts for virtually all Americans, and yet most of the GOP in the House couldn’t vote for it,” he adds.
He points to what, he says, is the real issue.
“A number of folks in the media seem to get that there’s something reckless about the Default Caucus of the GOP, but since they strive so hard for balance, they have to attack Obama for something too, and so they usually point to his lack of spending cuts,” he writes.
“The truth of the matter is that Obama has done more than the GOP in terms of trying to come to grips with entitlement spending,” he adds. “Most Congressmen aren’t babies. Some are. In 2013, let’s get rid of the ‘pox on both their houses’ way of looking at things.”

Jan. 3, 2013 at 2:51pmYou can’t say Obama has done great things for entitlement reform after he removed the work requirement for welfare. This after Clinton and Newt instituted it and it worked well. But we’ve become a nation of commenting off the cuff with no facts to back it up.

I know, right? And then people stay stupid, inaccurate things that they’ve merely heard from others without looking into it, things like,
“[Obama] removed the work requirement for welfare. This after Clinton and Newt instituted it and it worked well.”

Jan. 3, 2013 at 2:30pm“Obama has done more than the GOP in terms of trying to come to grips with entitlement spending…”, is the most lying statement I have seen in a long time. If it were not for obama wanting to increase taxes on people there would be no problem. You can bet he will be trying to pass more taxes on people, especially the rich. He is not through. The middle-class will be next to be attacked by the obama tax wave.

Jan. 3, 2013 at 2:11pmActually, the farm has been on auto pilot for about 30 years. Regulations abound, and any new administration can use and abuse them at will without going thru congress via EO.
You have no ideal of ALL of the Bills awaiting the right change agent to push them. Some are very dusty.
So yeah, this is what is happening and has been going on for many decades.
Rise and fall, coming some day…I have hope!

ENTITLEMENT Spending ? Did i miss something here ? Why the emphasis on ENTITLEMENT spending ? This Joe W. is blaming the 16+ Trillion National Debt on ENTITLEMENT spending ?
Maybe i missed something here. But i do love the Cover Picture. It’s accurate and priceless.

Jan. 3, 2013 at 12:56pmThe magazine cover looks pretty accurate to me, both in depiction of the congress’s composition and the comment on the cover. I’d have to agree with both assessments,. But I’ve got to say that some of the things I’ve seen written on this site and others are, at the very least entertaining, if not delusional.

Jan. 3, 2013 at 12:56pmThis is ludicrous. Obama is the one that is looking to get 98% of what he wants, and is only prepared to give Republicans 1% of the rest. Republicans are very forgiving – it’s in their nature. If the deal came down to 60/40 the Republicans would take it and even the Democrats could gloat about such a ‘victory’. But NO – Obama wants to set fire to Republicans and burn them hideously and relentlessly.
And to this I say, FINE. You want to play that way? Then Republicans should just call his bluff and let civilization crumble around Obama’s head. How else will they learn?

Jan. 3, 2013 at 1:08pmI think they should get together and pass whatever Obama first hands them. No changes. Watch what happens when the communists get what they want. Can’t blame the republicans then, it was passed just how he wanted it. Then he would have the choice of vetoing his own bill or letting society collapse on his watch,.
