Firefighter’s Helmet Cam Captures a Year of Battling Blazes in Detroit-Area City

A Detroit-area firefighter spent much of 2012 with a camera strapped to his helmet and has put together an engrossing mashup of some of the blazes he faced.
The eight-minute video by Scott Ziegler of Highland Park, Mich. is a fascinating look at how firefighters risk their lives every day.

Posted on January 7, 2013 at 8:37amCan someone tell me the difference between this year in video and a slow motion riot? How many of those fires were intentionally set…arson? FYI, Highland Park, MI is a city within a city. It lies entirely within the city limits of Detroit. One of two such enclaves with Hamtramck being the other one.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 9:07amGood video but the rap music we could have done without.Sure it is Detroit, we get it but the video is not something that could be shown to a bunch of grade school age kids as a teaching tool unless you edit the nasty rap song.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 7:26pmI left Mt. Clemens 30 years ago, It was all bad then but a lot worse now. Why even put out the vacant homes? Maybe look for bodies.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 7:23pmI was born in Detroit. Things were so much better then. Parts were in decay but not like it is now. It is shameful. You can blame it on the Democrats and the taker mentality. The Unions too. So many beautiful old homes wasted, destroyed, gone. Jobs gone. The drug culture rules and they all are supported by government aid. Just about everyone is supported by the government so they have no respect for anything. They will always get more for free. I fear Detroit is coming to all of America!

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 6:50pmWhy put the fires out. Let that whole rats nest burn. I went there in my early 20′s and it was a run down dump back then.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 6:49pmWOW.. where do I start.
(1) Notice the bad condition of the roads? Even as the engine leaves the station.
(2) I didn’t see the traffic lights change green for them???? WTF.
(3) One guy in a fire with just his nomex head cover over his face. Our Chief would have his tail.
(4) A old and what appears to be a non-occupied home on fire (everywhere) Why go inside and risk your life with nothing to really save. Just hose the house until it drops or stops burning. Don’t go inside.
The video was good. I didn’t watch beyond the home fire.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 7:18amDustoff….what your saying is you can with 100% certainty say the house is not being used by squatters from the front yard? With the economy and more americans down on their luck, I can tell you from personal experiences that alot of boarded up,burned out homes have homeless living in them. Either your a chief or your department doesnt really put priority on making sure that even the homeless deserved to be searched for.

I’m with you on the search. However, not every dept deals with chronic homeless people.
Did you guys know that over 90% of fires in Detroit are arson? Usually set by homeless people trying to keep warm?
