House Passes $9.7 Billion in Sandy Relief — and 67 Republicans Voted Against It

AP
The House of Representatives on Friday approved long-awaited disaster relief aid for Hurricane Sandy victims after near open rebellion by some Republican lawmakers against House Speaker John Boehner.
A two-thirds majority was required to pass $9.7 billion measure, a small fraction of the more than $60 billion that was on the table Tuesday night when House leadership quashed the vote. The final vote was 354-67, with the opposition coming entirely from Republicans.
The vote provides additional borrowing authority for the National Flood Insurance Program to pay out claims that arose from the October storm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency had warned the program would run out of money next week.
Boehner has promised a second Sandy vote on the remaining $51 billion in recovery money for Jan. 15.
Update: The bill cleared the Senate later on Friday and was headed for President Barack Obama’s signature.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 12:40pmWhy don’t they have their own insurance to cover it? Why do tax payers have to foot the bill? Why do tax payers have to pay for them to rebuild in disaster areas when it can and will happen again? If they choose to rebuild there it is on them and there should be no tax payer bailout.

My friend, Governor Christie would NEVER allow fraud or pork – he just is not built that way – and he has assembled a number of former Attorneys General to oversee the accounting – and accountability.
And – we must remember that these Northeastern Mega-States are the most important Financially Wealthy states in the union – who always pay More Federal taxes than they recieve benefits for – which really helps the poor Red States.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 2:37pmUnfortunately the federal govt sells “FLOOD INSURANCE” at INSANELY LOW RATES.
Very simply put, this increases building on flood planes, increases damage during floods, and costs taxpayers a bundle.
The feds have so overstepped their bounds that we are all screwed until there is another revolution. Thanks to lib-tards trying to “help” (always with other peoples’ money, of course!) we are going bankrupt, literally, and most Americans don’t know it, or don’t care. As an OHIO Class sailor you must be familiar with Kings Bay and Keyport, and probably some overseas ports.
The combined ports of New Jersey and New York are among the top five commercial seaports in the world. The Wall Street industrial base is considered to be the world’s leading financial district. The region is the busiest trucking, air and rail shipping hub on the East Coast, and one of the most used in the world. Add Connecticut and Long Island and there are unmatched leaders in law, art, business, manufacturing, defense, fashion, entertainment, real estate, major Universities, laboratories – the list goes on and on.
And, the NE region is NOT in hurricane alley, and the populations were NOT eligible for Flood Plain Insurance (which, by the way is a Federal handout to Malibu, Galveston and Nags Head). This was regarded as a 1-in-500 year event (esp. if you do not believe in Global Warming!)

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 3:16pmExactly why 67 in the GOP voted against it. Yet in neither the headline nor the story is this mentioned. Clearly part of the agenda to demonize the right and the people running the Blaze are doing it right in front of our eyes. I have been in since the very beginning paying Glenn by the year for insider extreme and even before the extreme and 4th hour began. In May the next year is due again and I am seriously considering dropping out. Glenn hired an extreme leftist to run the Blaze and it is very apparent in the stories and editorializing lately. Between that and the over bloated scripts and advertising I am nearly done with it all. If locking up my computer with errant scripts on top of more scripts was my goal, I would just go to the NYT or similar news site. Actually now the Blaze is even worse than they are. Add to that headlines and writing by left leaning authors with a secret agenda of attacking the right while feigning they are with us, I must wonder why am I still here. The headline on this story is an attack to demonize the right and not a word inside the story explains the insane amount of pork tacked into the bill which would at least explain why 67 voted against it. This story is aimed at demonizing the right with no truth nor explanations given about what the left put in the bill.

You have become your enemy if you think this way. A tactic of the left is to disagree with a universal truth merely because the right was telling it. They do this to the point of the demise of the country they were born in. That and/or for political correctness edit their comments. This is what you are asking me to do. Truth is truth. Your attitude serves to further perpetuate endless division. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Spoken by the Lord Himself. Simply because it is a universal truth. My anger with the Blaze over the headline and content of this story is based solely upon the facts therein. They demonize the right unfairly by omission. What does it matter if the left agrees. If anything, some small common ground was established wherein further communication may be achieved. Your approach guarantees peace can never be, eternal division and strife will continue until the only possible outcome, i.e., utter destruction for all is achieved. Where is the wisdom in that? Put simply what you just asked is to act in precisely the same manner with the same tactics as those responsible for the current as well as future destruction. So no, I see no reason to give credence to your words since I choose not to become the thing I hate

This isn’t a new problem though. As a senator Davey Crockett grappled with this very thing. The excerpt from his book (posted below) embodies the REAL issue at hand and how constitutionalists ought to proceed.

Chris Christie needs to be ranting against any lawmaker who slipped an ‘earmark’ into the bill, stealing money from the victims or the country at large (or both).
The President needs to remember he was outspoken in opposing such behavior… until he took office wtih this ‘most transparent administration’ in history.
The JOB of the House is to initiate responsible financial legislation. Bohner et al need to stop letting Reid, Obama, the Senate, and others dictate what gets done, and get down to the business of reining in spending and limiting the damage of the next four years.

I just don’t care. Ok, I’m selfish and greedy, so what? I’m also a strict Constitutionalist, and when their name calling and childish finger pointing is done, they have zero actual real substance to answer my question of “Where in the Constitution is this authorized”. Posted on January 4, 2013 at 12:27pmEvery bill passed that raises the deficit is suppose to include cuts somewhere to offset the increase.
Also, the repulicans wanted this bill to include raises in the National Flood Insurance premiums to make it solvent and self sustaining in the future. Homeowners insurance covers wind damage but not floods. Most of the damage done in this and quite frankly most hurricaines is due to flooding. Most mortgage companies requre someone buying a home in a flood plane to purchase flood insurance, but only upto and including the ammount of the loan. This will not cover any equity or personal property such as stoves, washers and dryers, beds etc. It is up to the homeowner to purchase a higher ammount of flood insurance, which 96% do not. The premiums for flood insurance are not high enough to sustain the program and thus the taxpayers are once again bailing out a failed program.
As for the rest of the bill passed in the Senate it contains so much that should be paid by real estate taxes in the area affected. Rebuilding roads and bridges in New Jersey should not be the responsabily of those living in Kansas. Other cities and towns must pay for local roads out of thier own real estate taxes. Why does New York city think it’s subway system updates need to be paid for by the rest of the country. JMHO

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 11:33amI’m glad the ones opposed the bill. I feel bad for those people, however they voted for big government and now the government hasn’t been there for them. NY mayor turned away food donations due to salt. Christy turned away companies that could help get power back on, but due to unions turned them away…….. let those people stand on their own feet.

Posted on January 4, 2013 at 1:34pmI did not vote for big government.
Also I did not “Build my home on the sand on the beach”. I rented a one room apartment over a mile from the ocean on Long Island and lost everything I owned.
With that being said I have worked hard all my life and never asked the government for a dime in return. In this situation, I was wiped with no where to go. You are darn right I gladly accepted FEMA rental assistance.
For those passing judgement on this board, you have no idea how bad this storm was. There has been nothing like it in modern history. I honestly hope nothing like this ever happens to you.
