Police Chief Lifts Ban on Officers Eating at Denny’s After Detective Was Told to Leave Her Gun in the Car

With gun sensitivity at a fever-pitch, yesterday’s story about detectives in Belleville, Ill., who argued with a manager after being told that they couldn’t have firearms inside of a Denny’s restaurant, resonated. But now, just one day after TheBlaze reported that Belleville Police Capt. Don Sax banned officers from entering the establishment as a result of the incident, he has overturned his proclamation.

Fox News’ Todd Starnes reports that the mandate that officers not eat at the location is no longer in place. Originally, Sax issued a pointed statement that chastised Denny’s and dismissed the negative treatment his detectives received.

“The Belleville Police Department is very disheartened by the lack of respect shown to on-duty sworn police officers,” he initially said. “Until further notice all on duty Belleville Police officers are banned from Denny’s Restaurant unless responding to an official call for service.”

Well, it seems that “further notice” has arrived now that officers can, once again, enjoy the diner’s delicacies. As previously reported, the initial drama unfolded on New Year’s Day when the detectives were eating at the establishment  The restaurant’s manager came over to tell a female in the group that she had to take her gun to the car — or leave.

The employee’s request was purportedly based on a complaint from another customer. While, at first, the detectives assumed that the mandate was a joke, they quickly learned otherwise. The manager explained the Denny’s only allows officers in uniform to carry guns, however the detectives had shown their badges, thus substantiating their identities.

When they got up to leave, a general manager, who purportedly noticed the officers refusing to pay for their meals during the dispute, came over and told the cops that they could stay after all. However, feeling embarrassed by the spectacle, they decided to leave anyway.

Following the incident, a Denny’s spokesperson said that the manager making the initial request was wrong and that police in or out of uniform may carry weapons in the company’s restaurants. The spokesperson dismissed the incident as “miscommunication” and said that the manager was simply trying to do the right thing to address another customer’s complaints.

This is what happens when businesses drop to their knees and try to suck off every loud mouthed liberal. The detective should have taken down the libs name, and put in the computer, “No firearms allowed when responding to calls. Watch and report incidents from the street. Clean up afterwards with a large push broom.”

Didn’t you notice? This happened in the corrupt state of Illinois. The only state that doesn’t allow its citizens the *privilege* of getting a CCW permit. That means the idiot making the complaint should have known they were cops. No one else is allowed to carry in that state. The real surprise is that the moron didn’t discretely flee out a convenient door and call for a police SWAT team from outside.

The trouble with this country is spinal.

Nobody has any backbone. Just imagine if everyone suddenly grew one. Then when crap like the newspaper listing gun owners like sex predators, or this Denny’s nonsense, or 16-oz. sodas, or the [wholly illegal] income tax, or anything else unconstitutional came up, everybody in unison refuses to do the wrong thing, refuses to relent, insists on adherence to the Constitution. How cool would that be? Guy starts shooting up the theater…suddenly gets a quizzical look after firing only a couple rounds and drops his gun…seems the trigger finger only operates when the heart and brain controlling it have no holes or chunks of lead in them. Less death, more justice. The hippie-dippy, global-commie anthem “Imagine all the people sharing all the world” didn’t work…this will: “Instant karma gonna get you/Gonna knock you right on the head/You better get yourself together/Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead.” As in right now! Done.

This cop should’ve said “No, you’re crazy. I’m not leaving. Period. What are you gonna do, call the police? Here I am, that was quick. Now shut the hell up with this poppycock and do your job, before you make me do mine.”

So sick of watching the mightiest nation in the history of the Solar System go all soft and mushy at the hands of a gaggle of pencil-necked, bleeding-heart sissy liberal crybabies. Keep building those “secret” prison camps around the country, gov lovers…just make ‘em nice & co

Exactly. We are too polite. From small things to big ones, we don’t want to be wrong and we don’t want to make waves. How’s that working for us? I went thru the drive thru at Mc Donalds and asked the young girl what was the difference in 2 sandwiches was. She cocked her head like a puppy and said ” I don’t know”. It never dawned on her to ask someone. And I just said O.K. and drove off. I didn’t get my info and she didn’t learn a thing. We need to stand up and be leaders.

      @ TB
It is a crummy headline. If you read the story, you will see that the ban was not lifted after the officers were asked to leave. Instead, the ban was lifted after “a Denny’s spokesperson said that the manager making the initial request was wrong and that police in or out of uniform may carry weapons in the company’s restaurants. The spokesperson dismissed the incident as “miscommunication” and said that the manager was simply trying to do the right thing to address another customer’s complaints.”
I have done my own boycotts of business based upon bone-headed mistakes by managers, etc., but Denny’s has done its best to show that it was a mistake by a low-level bonehead.

    Too little, too late…
any manager or employee who overreacted to that degree ‘based on the complaint of another customer’ has an underlying bias…

towhit… the table of officers was no smaller a number than the individual patron who complained, most likely even including the upset patron’s entire party… making an issue of it to an armed diner implies their service… their economic contribution… is less important than the other patrons.

This entire country has fallen prey to the ‘I am upset about X, so the person responsible for X should change.’ Just because you or I are upset at the appearance or behavior of someone else is NOT reason enough to expect that person to change… we can either tolerate it or leave.

Were i the officers I would not darken the door of this Denny’s; there are, I am sure, more restaurants that will welcome the presence of the city’s protectors.

They have an incredibly hard job, and get zero support from the public most are trying to protect, and precious little support from their administration when there are even the slightest problems or the ‘public perception’ of a problem.

So meanwhile, you think it’s OK for businesses to forego the benefit of having armed law abiding citizens not having their rights restricted while patronizing their business. In my state, the conceal carry law does not restrict the open carry rights already in place. Ergo, the little sticker on the door as you come in doesn’t make it illegal to wear an open-holstered gun into the business. If they ask you to leave, the most they can charge you with is trespass if you don’t leave. I’d like to see that happen just once and the armed citizen leaves, and then watch the whole place empty out in protest.

Hi MONK, My thought exactly. I’d still like to know what kind of action corporate took against that manager for misrepresenting their internal rules to the civil authorities. You would think that the higher ups would take that seriously considering what the publicity has done to them by now.
ARMEDANDREALLYPISSED, I really hear you. When I was a civilian cop the 24/7 convenient stores offered free coffee and welcomed us to take a short standing break and enjoy it for a moment. That marked cruiser out front followed by others through the night made a statement to criminals.

No matter where you go, you’re going to find a liberal who thinks they have the right to order even the police around. I don’t care if they did make amends, Denny’s has seen my last dollar just being stupid in the first place. It’s no different here where I live, the establishments are all liberal owned and operated.

You gotta remember that a lot of today’s liberals were yesterdays hippies and still view the police as “pigs”. AFAIAC the customer who complained can go pound sand and the manager needs to grow a brain.

MORETEAPLEASE, I suggest salt rather than sand. Far more effective.

Yep. Somebody from Denny’s contacted the chief and asked them to come back. It was all just a stupid bunch of liberal prog crap to begin with. If I were the manager, I would have told the patron that complained that I would pay for his meal and that HE should leave. Typical commie prog crap.

Police are the police. They carry guns to protect citizens from wacko losers who shoot up a Dennys or are a drunken mess. The “manager” of this Dennys who made this lame law on the spot should be put on leave for a couple weeks and go back to management seminars about common sense.

No. Police carry guns to avoid resistance from those that they rape, beat, kidnap and rob. People with guns stop crime.

Police don’t carry guns to protect you the carry guns to protect themselves.

Remember these officers will be attempting to strip law abiding citizens of their firearms in Illinois in a very short time. Do you really think they would defend your rights, and your liberty in the face of fascistic legislation? Do you think they would risk their jobs and personal wealth and risk being fired or jailed for your rights? I certainly don’t. They might grumble about it, but in the end they will take your freedom.

Don’t be so sure. You can’t lump them all into one category. And who said the Police are going to show up at our doorsteps. I am expecting the blue helmets.

JCLDWL, I was about to step in and point out that these police officers are merely the employees of the local politicians and have taken an oath to uphold their laws. Can’t blame the police officer as the root cause, but I’d still suggest to be very careful in these areas. I plan to stay firmly planted here in the south where I feel far more comfortable.
As for the blue helmets, they are about as useful in combat as **** on a stop sign. I wouldn’t let them worry me whatsoever. Okay, maybe if some are Canadians, they know what they are doing, but not the others.

That has nothing to do with this incident. I don’t believe in tempering the truth with personal feelings. It was wrong and idiotic for the manager to cave in to a whiny liberal pincushion and regardless of why police carry guns, they are allowed to and to ask them to leave themselves unprotected is wrong.
The fact that these same cops might be confiscating our guns shortly alters nothing concerning this incident.
