AP Analysis: Republican Party Seems ‘Angry and Divided’ as Ever — Do You Agree?

(AP) — The Republican Party seems as divided and angry as ever.
Infighting has penetrated the highest levels of the House GOP leadership. Long-standing geographic tensions have increased, pitting endangered Northeastern Republicans against their colleagues from other parts of the country. Enraged tea party leaders are threatening to knock off dozens of Republicans who supported a measure that raised taxes on the nation’s highest earners.
“People are mad as hell. I’m right there with them,” Amy Kremer, chairman of the Tea Party Express said late last week, declaring that she has “no confidence” in the party her members typically support. Her remarks came after GOP lawmakers agreed to higher taxes but no broad spending cuts as part of a deal to avert the “fiscal cliff.”
“Anybody that voted `yes’ in the House should be concerned” about primary challenges in 2014, she said.
At the same time, one of the GOP’s most popular voices, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, blasted his party’s “toxic internal politics” after House Republicans initially declined to approve disaster relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy. He said it was “disgusting to watch” their actions and he faulted the GOP’s most powerful elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The GOP’s internal struggles to figure out what it wants to be were painfully exposed after Mitt Romney’s loss to President Barack Obama on Nov. 6, but they have exploded in recent days. The fallout could extend well beyond the party’s ability to win policy battles on Capitol Hill. It could hamper Republicans as they examine how to regroup and attract new voters after a disheartening election season.
To a greater degree than the Democrats, the Republican Party has struggled with internal divisions for the past few years. But these latest clashes have seemed especially public and vicious.
“It’s disappointing to see infighting in the party,” said Ryan Williams, a Republican operative and former Romney aide. “It doesn’t make us look like we’re in a position to challenge the president and hold him accountable to the promises he made.”
What’s largely causing the dissension? A lack of a clear GOP leader with a single vision for the party.

(Photo: AP via Politico)
Republicans haven’t had a consistent standard-bearer since President George W. Bush left office in 2008 with the nation on the edge of a financial collapse. His departure, along with widespread economic concerns, gave rise to a tea party movement that infused the GOP’s conservative base with energy. The tea party is credited with broad Republican gains in the 2010 congressional elections, but it’s also blamed for the rising tension between the pragmatic and ideological wings of the party – discord that festers still.
It was much the same for Democrats in the late 1980s before Bill Clinton emerged to win the White House and shift his party to the political center.
2012 presidential nominee Romney never fully captured the hearts of his party’s most passionate voters. But his tenure atop the party was short-lived; since Election Day, he’s disappeared from the political world.
Those Republican leaders who remain engaged – Christie, Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus – are showing little sign of coming together.
Those on the GOP’s deep bench of potential 2016 presidential contenders, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, have begun staking out their own, sometimes conflicting ideas for the party.

Over the short term at least, the party’s divisions probably will continue to be exposed.
Obama has outlined a second-term agenda focused on immigration and gun control; those are issues that would test Republican solidarity even in good times. Deep splits already exist between Republican pragmatists and the conservative base, who oppose any restrictions on guns or allowances for illegal immigrants.
It’s unclear whether Obama can exploit the GOP fissures or whether the Republican dysfunction will hamper him. With Boehner unable to control his fractured caucus, the White House is left wondering how to deal with the House on any divisive issue.
Fiscal issues aren’t going away, [even if] lawmakers were [to] agree on a broad deficit-reduction package. The federal government reached its borrowing limit last week, so Congress has about two months or three months to raise the debt ceiling or risk a default on federal debt. Massive defense and domestic spending cuts are set to take effect in late February. By late March, the current spending plan will end, raising the possibility of a government shutdown.
Frustrated conservative activists and GOP insiders hope that the continued focus on fiscal matters will help unite the factions as the party pushes for deep spending cuts. That fight also may highlight Democratic divisions because the party’s liberal wing vehemently opposes any changes to Social Security or Medicare
“Whenever you lose the White House, the party’s going to have ups and downs,” said Republican strategist Ron Kaufman. “My guess is when the spending issues come up again, the Democrats’ warts will start to show as well.”

Republican Congressman Peter King of New York and other lawmakers speak to reporters after meeting with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, over the delayed vote on aid for the victims of Superstorm Sandy, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. (Photo: AP)
The GOP’s fissures go beyond positions on issues. They also are geographical.
Once a strong voice in the party, moderate Republicans across the Northeast are nearly extinct. Many of those who remain were frustrated in recent days when Boehner temporarily blocked a vote on a disaster relief bill.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said campaign donors in the Northeast who give the GOP after the slight “should have their head examined.”
Boehner, who just won a second term as speaker, quickly scheduled a vote on a narrower measure for Friday after the new Congress convened, and it rushed out a $9.7 billion measure to help pay flood insurance claims.
Weary Republican strategists are trying to be hopeful about the GOP’s path ahead, and liken the current situation to party’s struggles after Obama’s 2008 election. At the time, some pundits questioned the viability of the Republican Party. But it came roaring back two years later, thanks largely to the tea party.
“If we have learned anything from the fiscal cliff fiasco, conservatives discovered we need to stand firm, and stand together, on our principles from beginning to end,” said Republican strategist Alice Stewart. “It’s frustrating to see the GOP drop the ball and turn a position of true compromise into total surrender. The Democrats succeeded in their strategy of divide and conquer.”

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 6:57pmJon Boehner is a figurehead. The “Fiscal Cliff’ passage by Congress is a prelude to Obama’s second term. There’s no stopping Obama. The Senate still has its majority plus two. In the House although the GOP picked up two more. The power for passing bills is with the Democrates, and the Rinos. Boehner couldn’t get the necessary votes to pas his “Plan B”, but on the day of the passage of the “Fiscal Clif” bill. Nanacy Pelosi at 3:10pm on CSPA was confident of passage, and demanded an up or down vote. No amendments, Boehner put it to the up or down vote eight hours later. For New Jersey, only one repulican congressman voted NO, Scott Garrett 5th District. Frank LoBiondo 2nd Disrict, Jon Runyan 3rd District, Chris Smith 4th District, Leonard Lance 7th District, and Rodney Frelinghuysen 11th District voted YES. New Jersey is officially a purple state.

These are the “talking points” they ALL RAN ON.
The “Grand Bargain” was some Republicans voted as “Democrats” without the “D” in front of their names.
Republicans went to the left and they went over the cliff and they lost a lot of credibility with many.
To say we are very angry and we the people are very divided is putting it mildly.
2014/2016 is coming and we wont forget.
I for one wont forget what the House Republicans have done to squander their power the power

That’s a rhetorical question right? House Republicans can’t even pass their own bills (plan B). Republican Mitch McConnell filibustered his own bill for goodness sake. Republicans are at each others throats in the news.
The US government is broken. And, no, don’t blame the entire government. Don’t blame the President and don’t blame the Senate, even though the Founders are rolling over in their graves at the fact that the Senate can’t even vote on legislation without a super-majority – 60 – votes.
The House is dysfunctional, unable to themselves to pass any legislation that doesn’t meet fringe right demands, and let’s face it, those guys aren’t going to vote “yes” on any bill, unless it’s to ban gay marriage, or eliminate civil rights or something similar.
I’m convinced history will not look kindly on the those obstructionist extremists who are willing and even happy to destroy the country by preventing the US government from acting by majority rule as our Founder’s intended.

Okay. That’s you’re claim and you’re sticking to it. So what kind of government did they prefer and why didn’t they establish this country with that kind of government instead of the one they did? And what makes you think that the Founders believed every act of legislation should require a 60% vote? Can you reference the Constitution on that?
And, I have to ask, you’re afraid “The Government” is going to outlaw freedom of speech? Really? Have you talked to anyone about this?

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 5:47amFew of us really “know” the representatives that are in Washington D.C.
With that said, I believe that Speaker Boehner has landed himself in a bad situation. He has his own party members speaking out about things, before he can talk things over with “all of them”.
It is sometimes like herding cats!!!
I think he realizes that he must do something to close the pursestrings, and that the battle on taxes got out of hand before the election was over, with Republicans hinting they would vote for higher taxes on the so-called wealthy. So, he offered Obama exactly what Obama had said he wanted, “make the millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share”. This was to let everyone see, that Obama wanted more than what he said, “A bold-faced Lie”.
As I said before, I do not know Speaker Boehner personally, but I “think” the fight will be brought to bear with the Debt Ceiling. At least that will tell me the true intentions, and how much the Republicans are willing to fight for “All of Us, present and future”!!!
Please, do not let us down!!!!

“The United States is, indeed, a republic, not a democracy. Accurately defined, a democracy is a form of government in which the people decide policy matters directly–through town hall meetings or by voting on ballot initiatives and referendums. A republic, on the other hand, is a system in which the people choose representatives who, in turn, make policy decisions on their behalf. Most of us who WERE JFK Democrats figured out a long time ago that the Democratic Party had changed. Way too much for us. So we voted for Reagan in 1980. The two parties have drifted ideologically further and further apart. Then there is this current nauseating conversation about whether the GOP should be more gay friendly or abortion friendly or whatever. Puke. Give me the barf bucket. Then the TEA Party arrived. Ahhh. Fresh air. The GOP is in the process of getting rid of these OLD FARTS like Gingrich, Rove, Cheney, etc. and putting in TEA PARTY people who want uncontrolled spending and tax increases to start. But this takes time. The GOP may split. Or the Tea Party may become a new party. But in any case what we are seeing is a restructuring or necessary split. Americans are punked with the word “unity” and they fall for that word every stupid time. The GOP has to change to thwart the Democrats. They are kicking and screaming to do it. But, they will. Eventually. Give it time. Stop believing stupid crap articles like this one and stupid predictions that all is lost and the Democrats cannot be stopped. They can be stopped and they will be stopped. Give it time.

I think 2013 will be the year that people get smart and organize for any number of bad outcomes due to the policies of Obama’s Marxist administration and our idiot Reps in Congress. My suggestions… Join or start a local Militia. Do NOT allow our government to take away ANY of our 2nd Amendment rights, by any means necessary. Buy lot’s of ammo or better yet learn to make your own and buy a lot of the supplies you will need to do it with. Learn to Barter more. And finally… make this the year that you swear to leave the USA better for your offspring than what we were given by our parents. It is after-all an unwritten American rule and always has been, so it has become our patriotic duty!
However it will take a lot of people doing some extraordinary things in 2013 so we can start to take back the Country we all dearly love.
Also… We need a dynamic Leader to emerge before we can become a real movement (it’s just the way it is so don’t ask me why. It just is). Please know that some of us are NOT waiting for a Leader to magically appear. Instead we are presently actively looking for that leader. Pray for us.

HMMM…. duh……Maybe…… No…… Oh….. Can anybody give me some hints ?
How about you, FDR?
“The real truth of the matter is that a financial element in the large centers has owned the government since the days of Andrew Jackson.”
– President FD Roosevelt
Hmm. Thx. anymore?
“When the Federal Reserve Act was passed, the people of these United States did not perceive that a world banking system was being set up here. A super-state controlled by international bankers and international industrialists acting together to enslave the world for their own pleasure. Every effort has been made by the Fed (Reserve) to conceal its powers but the truth is — the Fed has usurped the government!”
Congressman Louis McFadden, Chairman of House Comm. on Banking and Currency from 1920 to 1931
Wow !!! thx, McFadden. Now I think we are getting somewhere. I am sorry you were poisoned to death. I think I know why.
Anyone else ?
“Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today.”
― Theodore Roosevelt
Invisible Government. Thx, Teddy.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 8:44pmInvisible Government. Thats a pretty far fetched statement…. wait…..
“This [Federal Reserve Act] establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President Wilson signs this bill, the INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT of the monetary power will be legalized….the worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency bill. From now on, depressions will be scientifically created.”
– Charles A. Lindbergh, Sr., 1913
Wow !!! I think anyone with an I.Q.of 20 or more, can understand now.
“I am afraid that the ordinary citizen will not like to be told that the banks can and do CREATE money, and they who control the credit of the nation direct the policies of governments and hold in their hands the destiny of the people.”
– Reginald McKenna (1863-1943), President of the Midlands Bank of England, UK Chancellor 1915-16, January 1924
“The Federal Reserve is one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever seen. There is not a man within the sound of my voice who does not know that THIS NATION IS RUN by the international bankers.”
– Congressman Louis T. McFadden, Chairman of the House Banking and Currency Committee, June 20, 1932

The Death Of Chavez
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/southamerica/venezuela/9782566/Death-of-Hugo-Chavez-could-set-off-shock-waves-across-region.html
“The orchestra played and loyal lawmakers erupted in adulatory applause as Hugo Chavez invoked Fidel Castro and Jesus Christ as his revolutionary role models.
His right hand raised, the fiery Venezuelan leader echoed the famous call to arms of his Cuban mentor. “Fatherland, socialism or death,” he proclaimed, then added with a typical flourish: “I swear by Christ, the greatest socialist in history.” That was six years ago as “El Commandante” was sworn in for his third term as president and blew kisses to rose petal-tossing crowds when he returned in an open-topped car to his palace to watch a military parade. “

Every person who wants a LEGAL election better do several things: demand paper ballots, remove electronic voting machines, prevent illegals from voting, require voter ID in every state, prevent George Soros from counting ballots, ensure proper voting procedures, etc. Election 2012 was fraudulent. Barack Obama is NOT the duly elected President of the United States. He was not LEGALLy elected. The GOP needs one lawsuit after another about Election 2012. Posted on January 5, 2013 at 6:52pmThe Chicago radical Democrats have a habit of stating things they wish to be true and then repeating them endlessly in their Lap Dog MSM . The repeating of said things is to make them become accepted by the public as true. They did it endlessly with the allegations of ” racist” Tea Party remarks ( that was after there was an actual Democrat, Jason Levin, who was caught advising Democrats to take racist signs into Tea Party rallies to smear the Tea Party ) This is all part of the Rules For Radicals tactics our Chicago radicals learned so well ! And they use the media to promote their propaganda 24 / 7. Without the propaganda tool of the media, our radicals would never be able to get away with what they get away with.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 6:50pmThe more I observe, the more I read I begin to realize that Washington is a stage and they are all players……or I should say most of them. The end game is to remove the Constitution. The established in both party’s are behind this. The know that an outright attack on the Constitution would never fly, so they have plucked away at it for years……many years. They can smell the endgame, we see the masks coming off and know that a huge part of our government is not working for the good of America, or the American citizen. How can anyone look at Schummer, Jackson Lee, Maxy Waters, Wrangle, Boenhner, Christie, and so many others and say “they are out for me”. Good lord if I knew what I know now…………Washington is not America’s friend, Washington is ground zero for the infection taking over America. The media is where we should focus our efforts. The media is not as well insulated as Washington, but the media spreads the infection through out the rest of the country. Washington is the Flu, the media is the vascular system spreading the virus.

Especially in politics, it’s nice to have something that shakes the established order up every once in a while, it helps you grow a backbone, which is something the Republican Party desperately needs. Also, why does conflict always imply dysfunctional? Just because you fight and disagree doesn’t mean you hate each other and won’t stand together, otherwise there wouldn’t be a single functioning family on this planet.
We will experience loss, but we’re already doing that, so why not try to come out the other side of it stronger than we were?

That is just beyond outrageous and now of course they will be the ones to pitch a fit about everything the commie is doing or going to do. Wait until they are forced to perform gay marriages – they deserve everything they have coming down the line – tragically we all have to pay the price.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 7:12pmWell…Neverending, I do agree with you about the people who did not vote. God only knows what was going on in their minds. I think we may be on the same wave here, you can’t be all things to all people, so to youself be true. The Republican Party is desperate to make the Dems like them. I think they (Republicans) are reacting as people do, who are in an emotionally abusive relationship. If they say the right thing, do the right thing….then maybe the abuser will be nice. Unfortunately, the Republicans are selling us out. I’m from NJ. I was glad that the first vote for Sandy relief was defeated. I was disheartened that the republicans from NJ, NY , were upset that the vote went the way it did. Not one of them mentioned the “pork” that was in the bill. Ok, they passed a bill to help the people who have suffered. guess that is good. ( I know many who have lost so much). Anyway, I don’t think we should expect anything much from the house. I guess what I’m saying is we’re screwed.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 9:29pmIt’s not the conservatives fault the RNC put up another hopelessly flawed big gov. candidate after they did the exact same thing 4 yrs ago. The media propagandists instantly said it was the conservatives fault that the Reps lost to BHO. There was no conservative at the top of the ticket!!!
The 2 things that lost it was another big gov. candidate and voter fraud.
I, personally, think the fraud alone did it, but we YT’s ain’t supposed to mention that! The media propagandists tell us it be racist.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 10:37pm@DRS1969 – couldn’t disagree with you more. Blaming others still got us this commie in chief for four more years. The ones that gave it to him were the ones of course that voted for him but what put him over the top was the ones that stayed home or went to the polls and voted all but the presidency. If that is the rationale then all of you deserve just what you are going to get and so please enjoy it but guess you all are so proud that you proved your poiint. AND I thought the dems were the ignorant ones. Guess we learn something new everyday.

I too am disappointed in my evangelical brothers and sisters. I’m guessing the ones that were not praying for 40 days were also the ones not voting, but who knows. All of my friends were shocked when they saw the numbers on evangelical turnout. The non-voters should be ashamed. We are going to get another 4 years of h*ll on earth with BO in charge. Maybe that will bring them to their knees and to the voting booth.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 6:34pmNeither will a Union, that is why we need to go back to the idea of 50 different independent States, that only need a weak federal government to handle National security (including border security) and foreign trade.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 6:47pmActually, a Government that could secure all our borders (including sea and air ports of entry) and fight two foreign wars at once and provide effective counter-terrorism by definition could not be weak. The Government was getting smaller up until 9-11. Since then, Federal and contractor jobs were added to answer national security demands, 50% of all growth has been in DHS Agencies, 15% at DoD and 10% in the Intelligence Community. So what should we cut, Booger?

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 7:01pmThe Democrats have a definite agenda : to divide the conservatives. Witness the comments our Trolls make here. Obama Chicago radicals have done almost as much to divide America as the issue of slavery did. The Chicago crowd uses ” race” to accomplish the divide. That and the Marxist issue of class warfare in their ” the rich don’t pay their fair share” division. The Great Divider : Barack Obama.

Posted on January 5, 2013 at 7:39pmOur reps need to know that this theme is more than some disgruntled fringe group. It is what they have shown us by their actions. They are more concerned with how they are viewed by their peers (Republicans or Democrats) than they are with doing their job. That’s why there is very little difference between either party. They are both irresponsible with our money and neither will cut spending. There is no member of the GOP that has the backbone to lead. Not one. There has not been any significant workable plan put forward by the GOP. They don’t want to rock the political boat. Go with the program and stay in office. Status Quo. Status quo is a larger deficit and higher taxes. Stop. Make a stand. Have a plan. Go to work.
