‘My Wife Is a Hero’: Georgia Mother Shoots Home Intruder Five Times After Being Cornered in Attic

A Georgia mother and her two young children are unharmed after a man broke into their house with a crowbar on Friday, cornering them in an attic crawlspace.

According to WSB-TV, the woman was at home with her nine-year-old twins when the doorbell rang. When they didn’t answer, the man reportedly went back to his car and returned with a crowbar.

The mother said she could see the suspect– now identified as Paul Slater– trying to enter the house with the crowbar from her office window. Without hesitation, she grabbed her children, her phone, her gun, and ran upstairs.

One can only imagine the breathless moments after the man broke down the door and began searching the house.

But the man eventually found the family.

“The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he’s staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver,” [Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman] told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.

The woman then shot him five times, but he survived, Chapman said. He said the woman ran out of bullets but threatened to shoot the intruder if he moved.

“She’s standing over him, and she realizes she’s fired all six rounds. And the guy’s telling her to quit shooting,” Chapman said.

The woman ran to a neighbor’s home with her children. The intruder attempted to flee in his car but crashed into a wooded area and collapsed in a nearby driveway, Chapman said. [Emphasis added]

Slater– who was taken to the hospital with punctured lungs, a punctured liver, and a punctured stomach– has reportedly been arrested six times since 2008.

WSB-TV continues:

“My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as a responsible, prepared gun owner,” [the woman's husband] Donnie Herman said.

He said he’s thankful for his family’s safety.

“Her life is saved, and her kids’ life is saved, and that’s all I’d like to say,” Herman said.

Commenters have overwhelmingly agreed with the husband thus far– one Savannah Morning News reader even posting a similar story illustrating the importance of the woman’s firearm.

In the other report, after an unarmed woman’s home was robbed, she was the one who ended up in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

It’s just good that she didn’t have one of those evil “assault weapons” or she could have kept shooting until the sucker was, uh, terminated. The liberal fools who want MORE gun control obviously believe the movies their commie movie maker buddies make showing people dropping with one shot from a handgun and/or being blown backwards out a window or whatever when shot with anything short of an RPG.

This is a great example of doing it right, doing it the conservative way. And here is a perfect example of doing it wrong, doing it the liberal way.

If the current administration gets there way about banning weapons in the hands of law abiding and registered gun owners, situations like what this lady and her kids experience could will be a different ending if she didn’ have a weapon to protect herself from intruders. By the way, Obama and the rest of his minions have bodyguards with gun to protect them, but we who pays their wages can’t…..go figure…….

Say what you will about better aim and larger caliber (all very important) , but when your put in that position with your adrenelin pumping and never have shot anyone before, I say she done pretty well hitting him five times. I’m sure she will practice more in the future. To bad we live in a society that more and more requires honest citizens to defend themselves and thier families with a weapon. The libs and other left wing gun hating idiots have yet to be put in this position . When they are I want them to tell me what they are going to do when their door is kicked in and the police have not yet arrived. Whining and sceaming won’t work. By the way as much as I hate to say this ” a round between the eyes ” would not have broke my heart. This slug should have been in prison long ago…………

I am going to throw this out here in public. Perhaps one of the moderators will see it. Perhaps a reader can act on this.
A NEW TV SERIES
I wanted to get these types of stories into the mainstream. Armed civilians save lives.
I would bet not a single person can offer an example of a movie or tv show that shows a civilian that is armed in a good light. Only police or other government officials are armed good guys. All others are criminals. In fact civilian heros usually refuse to touch a dirty evil gun. yuck. then toss it.
I did not think a full length movie would work. I have two alternatives
First: The “crime” show with a regular cast, depicting multiple stories running simultaneously, and even ongoing stories spanning several shows. They are common. They usually introduce a short vignette that is started and concluded inside the 48 minutes. Each week one or two of these could be shown. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of these. We would never run out of material. Some of these even have real video.
Second: is a mini-clip type show. Like “1000 ways to die”. If you have never seen it. It is on Spike tv. It usually shows a number of short stories in the hour. It depicts all the stupid ways stupid people find to kill themselves, by accident. They are based on true stories, supposedly. The give the date and location and first names. 6 stories a week, talk about the 2A.
Why not both? If you make $ remember me. Thanks.

First: The ban of “assault weapons” is not banning assault weapons. Only the military, swat and very few civilians can afford them. They are proposing to ban semi-automatic rifles. Huge difference. let your liberal buddies know the difference.
Second: This is a good case to have a larger capacity pistol instead of a revolver. There are pros and cons either way. If she had stopped to re-load the revolver, she could have been charged with murder if the threat was no longer viable. I still don’t know how he ran with holes in his lungs.
Third: this is a good opportunity to remind people who do have guns to train with them. Your shooting ability drops considerably in the midst of the emergency.
Fourth: make sure the last bullet is a kill shot to avoid him suing you. You can defend against his family much easier if they don’t have their star witness. This may sound cruel, but take your time to call 911. Your first words should be “I thought he was going to kill me” memorize them.
Fifth: Plus she could save the taxpayers about 100 grand or more for trials, appeals, prison, parole, medical care, disability payments section 8 housing, food stamps.

Although this appears to be CLEARLY a case of self defense, I would not be at all surprised if this woman faces federal charges from the obama Department of Justice (We no longer have a US Department of Justice).

You lot really think that a woman murdering a man in front of her children would have been the best move?
Deciding for herself that he deserved capital punishment without knowing his intentions?
One of his prior convictions involved violence, perhaps the others didn’t? The violence he committed may well have had nothing to do with women and children
How can you all be sure he even meant to hurt her and wasn’t just there to steal?

  This woman did not murder, attempt to murder, or try to enforce capital punishment. She was defending her home and family from a criminal intruder. Under the law in all 50 states, when someone breaks into a home that person LEGALLY forfeits their right to safety. Getting shot, and possibly killed, is an occupational hazard if you are a criminal, which this intruder appears to be.
  Yes, he may have been there to “just” rob the home, but with his criminal record he might have been thinking about not leaving witnesses. I bet you didn’t think about that possibility.

  Surely law is not the only consideration here? The horror of children watching their mother kill a man is surely also to be considered.
  Is death such an easy thing in America?
  So easy to conclude he would kill, so easy to conclude he should be killed, I see no compelling evidence.
  How can I not have considered that possibility Daniel from TN? Everyone here has concluded it. I think there is absence of people thinking of the alternative as a possibility.

No mention of what drugs the perp was on, probably one reason why he was able to get up after being shot 5 times. I carry a revolver because when the chips are down I don’t need a round stove piping on me! I know when I pull the trigger it goes boom until it goes click. Since the article did not comment on the type of ammo we must wonder, but perhaps a better ammo could have been more productive. While she did not kill him, she did in fact neutralize the threat and was able to get herself and her children to safety, that is the important part of the story.

Hooray for her! I was really surprised to see this story on MSNBC also, in that possession of a gun protected this family from criminal intruder who was obviously looking for them.

While human life is precious, I am actually sorry she did not kill this guy. He is clearly a habitual criminal and will probably end up suing for wrongful injury or some other stupid claim allowable under our flawed legal system. This hoodlum should have not been out walking the streets!

This kind of thing happens every day but there’s no way the MSM is going to cover anything that changes their narrative on guns.

She did exactly what I would want my wife to do. Grab the kids, the phone, the S&W .38 and retreat. The object is to protect the kids and then yourself. Six rounds off with 5 hits while on an adenalin rush. That is good in anyone’s book.

The Mom should have double tapped the intruder; two in the body and one in the head. Dead intruders can’t hire some fame seeking lawyer to sue the original victims. I wish her luck on this and hope she NEVER has to go through something like this again!

First, glad the good people are ok. Second, this article screams gun control, as a tighter group in the perp’s chest would have solved the problem. Hollow points are somewhat forgiving for “bad aim” as are Hydro shock rounds. The .38 is a good backup gun, but to stop people, .38 special, or .357 are a better choice. She needs a high capacity mag in a Glock or Sig. A 1911 A1 would be a good choice as well. Honestly IMHO 16 or 20 gauge pump shotgun with slugs or 00 buck would probably be a great choice for this nice lady! Simply racking the gun in the dark would likely had this perp running away, Especially with a tactical light or laser on the barrel. Oh look, he brought a crowbar to a gun fight, he chose badly!

The whole things begs the question, with 6 arrests, what is this “individual” doing on the street? And how long will he be in for this crime?

Wow, good job, ma’am..your husband is correct – you are a HERO! You saved three lives – is there any doubt this man would have killed all three of them. I know she was shaking & nervous that’s why this thug is not dead, but she could have saved taxpayers a bunch of money by having better aim or a better weapon.

Also, it is a good thing this thug was a public school student, because apparently he could not count. This was evident in the fact that she shot 6 rounds and he still asked her not to shoot him, another dumb criminal…..lets hope after the 7th arrest that he will be put to death.
