Report: Obama Has Picked Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary, Announcement Expected Monday

President Barack Obama shakes hands with former Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska as Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and first lady Michelle Obama look on during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, Monday, May 28, 2012, in Washington. (AP)
President Barack Obama has settled on nominating former Sen. Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense and is expected to announce his decision on Monday, according to Politico.
Hagel has been widely presumed to be Obama’s pick to replace outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, with multiple reports just days ago indicating the announcement would be sometime this week.
The Vietnam War veteran — who served as a Republican senator for Nebraska from 1997 to 2009 — was openly critical of the Iraq War and made an eyebrow-raising comment about not being intimidated by the “Jewish lobby.” He also referred to an ambassadorial nominee during the Clinton administration as “openly, aggressively gay,” a remark he apologized for in December. Obama has defended Hagel’s tenure in the Senate.
From Politico:
A Democratic aide described the White House’s logic for choosing Hagel, age 66: “Chuck Hagel is a decorated war hero who would be the first enlisted soldier and Vietnam veteran to go on to serve as Secretary of Defense. He had the courage to break with his party during the Iraq War, and would help bring the war in Afghanistan to an end while building the military we need for the future.
“He has been a champion for troops, veterans and military families through his service at the VA and USO, and his leadership on behalf of the post-9/11 G.I. Bill. The President knows him well, has travelled with him to Iraq and Afghanistan, trusts him, and believes he represents the proud tradition of a strong, bipartisan foreign policy in the United States.”
Obama’s announcement is expected Monday as his first public appearance after returning from his holiday vacation with his family in Hawaii.

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 2:52pmLet’s appoint Representative Eric Cantor (Marshall, VA). Eric is a “young gun” Tea Party man who has close ties to pentagon and military bases, federal employees, defense contractors and our intelligence community.
He is fully endorsed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and the American Zionist Council. AIPAC’s official position on Iran is to encourage a strong diplomatic and economic response with “crippling” sanctions against Iran coordinated among the United States government, its European allies, Russia, and China.
Cantor is also fully endorsed by Dick and Lynn Cheney, William Kristol, John Bolton, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, and important entertainers like Levin, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, and Hannity.
Eric Cantor would be absolutely devoted to Israel first, and would not flinch at the thought of turning Iran into a thick sheet of glass in the desert, no matter what the cost to our deficit or the sacrifices of our brave all volunteer military, reserves, national guard, retirees and stop losses.
Most Republicans should take a really close look at clear-eyed Israel Hawk Mr. Cantor. He is in Top Leadership. Unlike speaker Boehner, he is a Tea Party friend of Sarah & Todd Palin, Louie Gohmert and Heritage Institute President, Senator Jim DeMint.

No. The useful idiots stood by and supported the war while the politicians in Washington ( BOTH republicans and democrats ) used 9/11 as a means to push their radical nanny-state domestic policy agenda on the American people ( talk about never letting a crisis go to waste. 9/11 was the ultimate crisis and the republicans and the democrats wasted no time in shoving the patriot act and domestic spy programs down our throats ). The American people were the useful idiots because they were willing to give up all of their freedoms and run to the federal government for protection. It was cowardly and stupid. Now all of those unconstitutional powers that you all willingly gave to president Bush have transfered to president Obama and he has taken the Bush big government ball and ran with it. Thanks to all of you, we now have the NDAA, drones over OUR skies, even stronger domestic spy programs, and on top of all of that, Obama now wants our guns.
I hope that future generations will look back and realize what cowards the American people were after 9/11.

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 11:11amIsrael is totally dependent on the USA, and they resent that they are not in charge. So they apply lots of pressure on Congress with their lobbyists and Political Action Committees. They cannot stand the prospect that the pentagon might require logical rationale and diplomacy before providing support.
Senator Hagel is a thinking man the way Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan were. None of these distinguished leaders were considered anti-Semite, yet all three openly negotiated with the Israelis to arrive at historical agreements that resulted in years of peace. Anytime the chips were down, we fully supported Israel. When war was necessary, they were always ready for war. But the USA saved untold Billions by not folding to every one of Israel’s extremely nationalist demands, and by making them compromise and act diplomatically to receive our support.
Hagel refuses to be pushed around, and some of our Congressional leadersheep can’t stand independent thinkers.
And, having an enlisted Veteran in charge, an Army ground pounder with combat wounds, is remarkable. Less than 3.0% of Americans serve in the military, and 0.5% of our citizens experience hand to hand combat to defend the freedoms of the 99.5%.
If outspoken Chuck Hagel does not accept, we can always nominate representative Eric Cantor of Marshall VA. Eric is a trusted Tea Party man with close ties to military, pentagon, Federal employees, Defense contractors and intelligence community.

I have seen Mr. Hagel (and many others) work quietly for the Nam Vets for decades, and since it started, for combatants of Afghanistan and Iraq (he and others did not want to repeat the way returning veterans were demeaned after Vietnam). So I personally think it would be a Veteran-Friendly choice. I also just prefer not seeing Americans kow-tow to even close Allies.
Aside from that, I don’t have a dog in this fight. You choose someone else, I know I could.
When you look at the available talent, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor or Governor Bob McDonnell come to mind, if it is meant to be a Republican. Or Senator Mark Warner if it’s not. These guys really know their way around the Pentagon with connections in all the Federal/DoD, Military, and Contractor sectors, plus they represent sizable Naval, Air and Army installations and special commands throughout the state. No other state can claim it represents the Pentagon, but DC or Maryland might come close.

Look Bow-Wow…..
Saddam Hussein quickly realized that Israel was supplying the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran with the heavy weaponry needed for Iran to fight its war against Iraq from 1980 – 1988:
——————————-
“Thus Operation Seashell, in which hundreds of tons of Israeli weapons were airlifted or shipped to Iran, was conceived. More would follow in what became known as the Iran-contra affair. “I don’t remember even one discussion about the ethics of the matter,” one key figure from the Israeli Defense Ministry is quoted as saying. “All that interested us was to sell, sell, sell.” No one in the security establishment claims to have foreseen then that post-revolution Iran was to become the main exporter of Islamic fundamentalism and a vital supplier of Israel’s front-line enemies with money, weapons, and know-how. According to Bergman, one of the Browning machine guns sold to Iran by Israel was used by Hizballah 25 years later to kill Israeli soldiers during the kidnapping of two troops on July 12, 2006.

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 11:12amThere are many problems with Hagel, and very real reasons why even many Jewish democrats in Congress oppose his nomination. Not only has Hagel been a long-time, out-spoken adversary of Israel, but, he has spoken about his fears of the powerful “Jewish lobby” (when referring to the pro-Israel lobby – this was red-flag to many Jews) which he believes holds too much sway on Capitol Hill. Hagel is Jewish, but, he has long been viewed by the Jewish community as a self-loathing Jew because of his bizarre support for, and from, islamic terrorist organizations and radical islamist governments around the world.

And, apparently you do not understand that there are two separate issues here – Hagel is anti-Semitic, as evidenced by his bizarre fear of a non-existent, malignant “Jewish lobby” on Capitol Hill, and, he is anti-Israel as evidenced by his long history of criticisms of Israel and his dangerous associations and praise of radical muslim governments and organizations whose focus is the destruction of Israel (and ultimately, all Jews worldwide).

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 9:55amI’m sure all Theblaze readers will protest this nomination but if you think about it, Obama could have done A LOT worse. Hagel does have some redeeming qualities when it comes to foreign policy…..
“They talk about America’s national interest. What the hell do you think they’re talking about? We’re not there for figs.” – Hagel in 2007

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 10:27amObama also promised peace……He then doubled the size of the war in Afghanistan ( which doubled troop deaths ), vastly increased the drone missile strikes which kills civilians, assassinated American citizens without due process, renewed the patriot act, signed the NDAA into law, waged war on federal whistleblowers, and ran guns into the Mexican drug cartels. Need i continue?
Also, in the 2000 presidential election cycle, Bush ran on a platform that included a “humble” foreign policy. How’d that work out?
People change. Our foreign policy doesn’t.

Indeed. Obama is another globalist pawn doing the bidding of the UN by trying to take our guns, much like Feinstein, Romney, and the rest of the progressives that support gun bans.

Exactly, Obama does not like the jews (Israel) and is using our troops to overthrow governments in the middle east(Syria, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Pakistan,… ) in order to rush in the Muslim Brotherhood and a Caliphate. Is it not clear what this president is trying to accomplish? Of course it is!

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 9:59amYeah, that seems to have been Obama’s litmus test.
Given Obama’s policies in the Middle East in his first term, expect major wars there in his second term, but don’t hold your breath waiting for Obama to help Israel. In fact, I predict Obama will overtly align with Israel’s enemies in the next 2-3 years.
Woe to you, America.

Romney, McCain, Graham, ect all support the arab rebels. Its not just Obama. The problem is the UN. We need to get out of the UN and we need to elect leaders that understand this. The UN is pushing agenda 21. The UN is pushing the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda. The UN is pushing to disarm America. Both parties bow down and worship at the globalist altar of the UN.
Where a candidate stands on the UN should be the ultimate litmus test.

Obama is not a Muslim, he is too self centered to worship anyone else than himself; the fact of him being an Islamist-SUPPORTER, is true to the core of his being. He sees them as a means to correct a grand mistake (read: Israel and America) done against the Muslims for centuries.
