Boehner: I Was Stunned When Obama Told Me ‘We Don’t Have a Spending Problem’

WASHINGTON, DC – DECEMBER 21: Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) Credit: Getty Images
The United States does not have a “spending problem,” President Barack Obama reportedly told House Speaker John Boehner during recent “fiscal cliff” negotiations. And yes, the Republican leader was shocked to hear those words from the leader of a country with roughly $16.4 trillion in national debt.
The Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Moore, recalling a recent interview with Boehner, writes:
I am talking to Mr. Boehner in his office on the second floor of the Capitol, 72 hours after the historic House vote to take America off the so-called fiscal cliff by making permanent the Bush tax cuts on most Americans, but also to raise taxes on high earners. In the interim, Mr. Boehner had been elected to serve his second term as speaker of the House. Throughout our hourlong conversation, as is his custom, he takes long drags on one cigarette after another.
Mr. Boehner looks battle weary from five weeks of grappling with the White House. He’s frustrated that the final deal failed to make progress toward his primary goal of “making a down payment on solving the debt crisis and setting a path to get real entitlement reform.” At one point he grimly says: “I need this job like I need a hole in the head.”
The president’s insistence that Washington doesn’t have a spending problem, Mr. Boehner says, is predicated on the belief that massive federal deficits stem from what Mr. Obama called “a health-care problem.” Mr. Boehner says that after he recovered from his astonishment—”They blame all of the fiscal woes on our health-care system”—he replied: “Clearly we have a health-care problem, which is about to get worse with ObamaCare. But, Mr. President, we have a very serious spending problem.” He repeated this message so often, he says, that toward the end of the negotiations, the president became irritated and said: “I’m getting tired of hearing you say that.”
Boehner also told the Wall Street Journal that negotiations with Obama and Democrats was brutal. So difficult, in fact, Boehner admits to losing his temper and telling Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to go “f**k yourself.”
“Those days after Christmas,” the Republican said. “I was in Ohio, and Harry’s on the Senate floor calling me a dictator and all kinds of nasty things. You know, I don’t lose my temper. I never do. But I was shocked at what Harry was saying about me. I came back to town. Saw Harry at the White House. And that was when that was said.”
Boehner confirms that when he asked Obama, after budging on $800 billion in new taxes, “What am I getting?” — the president replied: “You don’t get anything for it. I’m taking that anyway.”

Posted on January 7, 2013 at 8:24pmThe president could submit a budget that consists of a turd on a *******, which he basically has since he took office in 2009, none of his budgets have past including some that received no votes at all.
It then becomes the responsibility of Congress for appropriations and expenditures, which since 2010 the Republicans have controlled the House. The Republicans could submit a budget which has zero deficit spending and zero tax increases.

Not Obama
Not the Senate
The correct answer is the House of Representatives which is controlled by the republicans and their MAJORITY leader is Boehner.
The blame for any fiscal problems of the country belong squarely on the republicans in the House.
Time to get a clue.

Boehner is such a moron. And the Republicans are stupid beyond belief for letting him keep his seat.
The correct response to Obama not giving an inch would have been to walk away. It is so obvious. How can someone be that bad at negotiation? After walking away, he should have passed a bill in the House that lowered everyone’s taxes and cut the government across the board by 10%. Then went on to enjoy Christmas.
For the Debt Ceiling deal, there should only be CUTS. And the hammer to hit Obama and Reid with is their own “balanced approach”. Just keep telling the media that the taxes have already been put on 77% of Americans by Obama (what HE wanted), now it is time for the promised spending cuts.
Too easy.
Save your quarter, FlagWavingPatriot, Boehner doesn’t even know where to find the Clue store.

They are 100% going to get the blame anyway, so we can let it hit rock bottom and rebuild it. I want MY elected leaders to stand up and fight for me the tax payer. They should all go home and start having a daily press briefing on what 16.4 trillion is doing to us, what a true drop in the ocean raising taxes is. When everyone of them repeats the same message everyday at the same time they might start to gain traction in this fight. If we had to work along side of these useless fools on both sides of the isle in or jobs everyday, we would lose or jobs because our business would fail because of the lack of production. Posted on January 7, 2013 at 10:05pmActually whether or not the US has a “spending problem” is a matter of perspective. When Bush took office the budget was balanced – no spending problem. Bush started a war in Iraq to deprive them of weapons of mass destruction, and that has cost the US about 1.5 trillion dollars. Yes, that’s a spending problem, especially given that the money to conduct that war had to be borrowed. Every penny. The war in Afghanistan – another trillion bucks – was also borrowed and is still being borrowed. The extra Medicare benefit that Bush passed? Also borrowed.
So Boehner is obviously correct. The US does have a spending problem. There was no spending problem when Bush came into office but there sure is now.
What about a revenue problem? The Bush tax cuts are, according to the CBO, the largest contributor by far to the countries revenue. So we have a revenue problem too.
Not to mention the economic calamity that Bush ushered in in 2007. When people stop working, and businesses stop making a profit, then Government revenues drop. People and companies who don’t make money don’t pay taxes. That would be another revenue problem.

Meteors wants to lie to one & all about all 3. She is good that way. She is also good about posting on the 1st page with the last post on the main thread posting into the wee hours of the morning if necessary.
What do we know of bubbles. Well there was the tech bubble in the late 1990s. Clinton benefited politically from it. The tech bubble lifted the stock market generated economic activity & generally buoyed the market. It helped boost tax receipts. All those people out in Silicon valley trying to get rich. Clinton didn’t cause it. The bubble collapsed in 2000 & this was not bush’s fault. Bubble’s collapse & Y2K was no longer a threat.
To say we had surpluses for the last 2 or 3 years ignores the details. I know some people paint canvasses with rollers like …Meteors. Republicans passed welfare reform. Clinton vetoed it.By the 3rd or so time they passed it he signed it. To say that Clinton endorsed it is being less than truthful. Entitlement reform helped balance the budget.
Then there is the part that is not so pretty. The shell game. Borrowing from Social security. Yes both Clinton & many of the Democrats & Republicans in the Senate & House are guilty. That said t

There is such a things as a business cycles, bubbles & divided government.
Business cycles affect tax receipts. When Bush came into office on January 20, 2001 we had entered a recession around March 2000. Who was president then? Oh Clinton. Now he is not solely or mostly responsible, but he could have set the table better with better policies. But we get the usual from shills like Meteors that the recession starting in 2000 was bush’s recession even though he took office ion 2001. See how that works? Lie big like Goebbels said.
“Growth in gross domestic product slowed considerably in the third quarter of 2000 to the lowest rate since a contraction in the first quarter of 1991″
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_2000s_recession
The Bush recession started before he was sworn in or had a budget? His 1st budget would have been October 1, 2001. It is common sense to believe it was not Bush’s recession unless you are a Democrat shill.
Bush also had 911, which had quite an effect on a whole industry segment (airlines). That did not help GDP.
The shill usually mentions 2 wars but this time zeroed in on the Iraq war. Are these wars optional? If the Taliban does not extradite Usama then all is well? We can go on our business without a care like an unescorted ship past the pirate infested water

Meteors posted a few one liners around lunch to show that they are not nonplussed about having their strawmen arguments refuted.
Personally, I scroll the 1st page of comments for trolls making outrageous statements.
After web research, I refute them. The hardest one was the disparity between U.S. & British homicide rates. The libs always like to make it a one factor problem. Criminologists cite several if not a dozen factors. I’ll keep banging away on those other factors even though it is a hard sell. Most people cannot do a regression a analysis or a multifactor analysis to save their lives.Having done D.O.E.s Meteors posts are an insult to all intelligent discussion.
The best & simplest argument is that England has always had a lower crime rate/homicide rate.Check “English homicide rates 1857-1993″
It would be worth comparing rape stat form U.S. & England. recent U.S. rape stats are 3 times higher than England.. I would like to see if that matches the gun data. That is has it always been higher.
As an Aside
But England is catching up. they have a developing human trafficking scandal that the gov has been ignoring because because the perps are Muslim.
