‘Brought to You By the NRA’: Artist Unveils Provocative Sandy Hook Painting

The provocative painter Michael D’Antuono, like many artists, wants people to look at his work and think. But he doesn’t just want them to tilt their head sideways and ponder his use of light. He chooses controversial topics and scenes ultimately wants people to engage in discussion that could lead to change. And his latest painting is sure to cause some discussions — perhaps heated ones.

The piece titled “Brought to You by the NRA” shows the wood floor of a classroom. Among scattered crayons lies a chalkboard eraser, a children’s career book, a carton of milk, a hand-drawn family portrait and playing blocks. Only those blocks spell out “NRA” and have gun sketches on their surfaces and bullet shells and blood splashes mar the scene.

Painter Michael DAntuono Creates Provocative Anti NRA Piece in Response to Newtown Tragedy

(Image: Michael D’Antuono)

According to his website, the painting depicts the Newtown, Conn., murder and the NRA’s response. Twenty children and six staff members were killed by one gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 2012.

“Instead of taking some responsibility and supporting tougher gun laws, [the NRA] call[ed] for putting more guns in schools,” the painting’s description said.

In an email interview with TheBlaze, D’Antuono said the painting was spurred on by his “overwhelming sympathy for the parents who lost their children, and the burning need to do whatever I can to help prevent more families to suffer the same pain.”

D’Antuono said he’s not sure how exactly people will react to this piece, but felt it needed to “reflect the gruesome reality of doing nothing.”

“It will certainly upset people, but they need to direct their anger at those responsible for creating conditions in which tragedies like Sandy Hook happen,” he said. “I’m not saying the NRA are the only ones who share some responsibility, but they are an organization whose sole purpose seems to be to lobby against any kind of gun control. You have to wonder how many of those children might be alive today if the NRA hadn’t have successfully lobbied Congress to let the ban on assault weapons expire. Let’s not forget that China had a similar incident the same day only the attacker had a knife and no children were murdered.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve brought D’Antuono’s work to TheBlaze. D’Antuono made his debut on TheBlaze and with the Glenn Beck audience in November last year with his painting “The Truth,” which depicted President Barack Obama wearing a crown of thorns with his arms stretched out in a similar position to that of Jesus Christ on a cross. You might remember the clash between D’Antuono and Beck on TheBlaze TV about the First Amendment.

D’Antuono as an artist doesn’t create pieces for decorative purposes. As the motto on his website shows, they’re meant to make a statement:

“Art is not made to decorate rooms. It is an offensive weapon in defense against the enemy.” -Picasso

D’Antuono told TheBlaze after hearing about the tragedy that he could think of little else and had finished the painting, which he hopes will show “how greed has corrupted our priorities to engender an environment where we can’t protect our children,” before Christmas.

Is the release of painting now still too soon though, given that it hasn’t even been a month since the 26 people were shot by 20-year-old Adam Lanza in Newtown? D’Antuono wrote that he waited a month out of respect but felt that “now is the time to remind people about the consequences of allowing the NRA to influence gun control policy.”

As for the symbolism in elements of the painting itself, aside from the obvious, D’Antuono said the etchings on the blocks are of semiautomatic and *automatic weapons. The drawing and “When I Grow Up” book are reminders of the lives that won’t be fulfilled in same way now. And the mix of crayons, bullet shells and splatter of blood D’Antuono said are to make the viewer uncomfortable.

“…uncomfortable enough to do what we must so that we never have to see that combination again,” he said.

*It should be noted, however, fully automatic weapons have been very strictly regulated since the 1980s, making it very difficult for civilians to acquire them. So-called “assault weapons” have come under additional scrutiny after recent shootings like the one at Sandy Hook, but legal “assault” rifles like the AR-15 and AK-47 are semi-automatic. Many pistols are also semi-automatic.

How comes the picture on one of the blocks is of a Russian AK47, when we know the shooter had an AR15 (that he left in the back seat of his car)?

take notice that the artist did make the empty shell casings to be of the pistol type, and not rifle. Also note that the artist made the spent casings rimmed like a .38 revolver would use, but not what a Glock or Sig Sauer uses. (These libs never really know anything about firearms)

How comes no blocks spell out the name of the company that produced the violent video games this kid played for hours on end every day?

How comes no blocks spelling out ZOLOFT?

How comes no blocks spelling out “Goth”, being the MSM reported he was goth.

How comes no blocks spelling out the heavy metal violent music he listened to?

How comes no blocks spelling out MTV that has indoctrinated kids in the multicultural education that has lead to this sort of behavior.

Notice the blocks do not spell out any Bible verses, being these kids did not learn any in school, especially that one about “thou shall not kill”

Why no blocks asking about KEVIN JENNINGS. You say who is Kevin Jennings? Why he was Obama’s pick for SAFE SCHOOL CZAR. His only claim to fame was teaching school age children homosexuality, but not one person in the MSM (including the Blaze) has so much as mentioned his name.

I wonder why the artist did not show us a school sign, declaring this school a “Gun Free Zone”, where killers know they came come have th

Do you think the artist realizes that not one single school shooter has ever been an NRA member?

Does he know that not one school shooter has ever been a marksmanship competitor in CMP, 4H, NRA, or has ever earned their hunter safety card?

Do you think he realizes the most likely a good number of police that showed to stop this shooter,
were NRA members, up had NRA trained fire arms instructors in their department?

Do you think he realizes the NRA is a lobby group, the same as the ACLU?

Do you think he knows that many of our current military members compete in NRA sanctioned events?

This “artist” would probably deny that violent movies and their air-headed “stars” have any influence over what people end up doing in real life. Then with his next breath, he would say that the PSA those same air-headed “stars” put out is great because they are using their fame as influence. Liberals are so ambivalent when it comes to actually having to stand for something. They want it both ways to suit their agenda, no matter how much it’s lacking in any sense whatsoever.

Not even counting the fact that it is not the fault of the NRA, the Second Amendment, the Military, the maker of the Bushmaster rifle, the maker of the ammunition, or the millions of law-abiding gun owners in the US, this piece of “art” is crap. This is yet another loser who tries to get their 15-minutes of fame by leeching onto a tragedy.

Not only does D’Antuono not understand the issues he’s attempting to tackle in this piece, his artistic skills are lacking as well: His work features several serious scale and perspective errors involving the cubes, poor rendering of cylindrical objects, and unsophisticated handling of color relationships and spatial cues.

The jerk needs to be in a mental institution where he is not a threat to another group of innocent bystanders, he happens to personally dislike, using the ‘sandy hook’ tragedy as an excuse to target them. Left plans and goals are at WAR with God: a moral people who believe their rights come from God would never want nor need what they are selling and they know it. Lenin founder of Soviet Union said “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.” John Dewey went to Russia and influenced education to socialize child to be a tool of the state – to dumb down not teach to critically think. Once there is control of teacher’s unions, education colleges this becomes self perpetuating you remake the country in the schools rather then by throwing bombs. Your children in government schools 7hrs a day for 13 years being indoctrinated with anti-American, anti-God, anti-capitalism. Journalists now trained to interpret events and not report facts. Teachers union supports forcing every child to attend public school. Home schoolers beware!

Gun control is one weapon to control the culture and once you control the culture you can shape the thought of rising generations and change the country in a way where it can never be changed back again.

Turn our music, art, literature against us to change the culture.

    Guns and Liberal Hypocrisy

Facebook’s recent suspension of the NaturalNews.com account for
posting a quotation from page 446 of Mohandas Gandhi, An Autobiography
in which the noted pacifist observed, “Among the many misdeeds of British

Forget the facts that MSNBC’s Ed Schultz, Michael Moore, Rosie

Assault Weapon = Select fire Weapon with the ability to change from Safety to Semi-Auto to Full Auto with a selector lever.
Semi-Auto = fires one round per every pull of the trigger or as fast as you can twitch your Index finger!
And Assault Weapons were banned in 1986 with the ban of the manufacture of Full Auto Rifles for the General Public. It also requires you register the transfer or sale of the Assault weapon with a “Stamp Tax” equal to $200 – $300 and because they are no longer manufactured 90% of those “Assault” weapons cost $10 – $50K each depending on condition and yes that is a used price for a registered version.
And so far the news outlets have not really said what caliber was used to kill the kids and until that comes out then maybe we should hold off on any gun bans or even registration. Because the murders were committed with stolen guns, not the legal owner.

You also forgot to add “burst” in you definition as the M16 rifle is capable of. I own many firearms which are not “assault weapons”, though the left would classify them as one, the are defensive firearms should the need arise, but mostly sporting enjoyment for now.

      Daddy

Lighten up on True. He probably was trained on the M16A1 which had Safe, Semi-Auto and Auto. There was no burst on the M16A1. We were trained to fire 3 round bursts. But we had the mad minute which wasjust too much fun.

The NRA had nothing to do with a deranged lunatic that was intent on murdering innocent people. Join the NRA. Don’t hesitate or it will be too late. Help us protect our rights. https://membership.nrahq.org/forms/signup.asp?campaignid=bonusgiftwy&EK=Y3ARPPBD&pubID=272.7&hid=20342315

Just another liberal, following obama’s lead and exploiting the murder of 26 children and adults for personal gain. This is what obama-liberals do.

Agreed. A painting of 50 million chopped up dead babies with “Brought to you by Planned Parenthood” would have been more accurate.

Wonder how come he doesn’t do one for all the women and children killed in predator drone strikes? He could show a bloody wedding veil and little bloody shoes and then King Obama in the background pushing a button. Obama has killed more children than all the mass killers combined.

This propaganda (its not art) should be of the killer with bugged out eyes sitting around with bottles and pills of prozac, lithium, zoloft, lying around, while he sits there playing a murderous video game. Then the thoughts coming from his head of a US Govt plaqard reading “GUN FREE ZONE”.

Thats what this weirdo should have drawn. But no, the govt makes too much $$ off of the psycho drugs and even the vid games. Also the govt promotes the drugs that are meant to dumb down americans

We do not have a gun problem. We have a ” crazy ” problem. We have a mental health and a young male anger problem. And with all of the divisive, ” the rich don’t pay their fair share” anger -producing rhetoric emanating from the White House, we also have a Chicago Radical Democrat and MSM problem.

Some people just have no clue what it means to have class.
It is never appropriate to use something like the deaths of these children and adults to get your 15 mins.
Artist? No activist that likes it when they get credit within their circles.

“Art is not made to decorate rooms. It is an offensive weapon in defense against the enemy.”

I happen to agree 100% [with the quote above - not his position]
Blaming the NRA is not only ludicrous its downright irresponsible.
Therefore expose the pea brain and let the consequences commence.
