Has Rapper Eminem Really Become a Born-Again Christian?

Has Rapper Eminem Really Become a Born Again Christian?

Reports are circulating that rapper Eminem has become a born-again Christian (Photo Credit: AP)

Rapper Eminem is known for his edgy music, which generally includes explicit lyrics and controversial themes. That’s why last week’s media report alleging that the performer has become a born-again Christian sparked so much interest.

While it was enticing for many to pounce on the idea that the formerly-troubled star would have a “come to Jesus” moment, the entire notion of an intense spiritual transformation is based on an unnamed source who was cited on the web site AllHipHop.com.

“I heard a doozie recently and I’m not sure that I can believe that its completely true,” the article announcing the rumor about the purported conversion read. “On the flip, I wouldn’t be shocked if it was. Eminem has been evolving a lot over the last few years. We’ve seen it. Maturity. Sobriety.”

The rumor, based on a source from Detroit, Mich., claims that the rapper is removing himself “further from the depths of the music industry.” This action, which has purportedly had an impact on his business ties and the acts he works with, is allegedly predicated upon the conversion to Christianity in which the rapper is said to have turned his life over to God.

This story wasn’t only reported on the hip hop blog, though. Other outlets like The Christian Post and the blog and opinion section of The Huffington Post also explored the alleged faith transformation. Following the story’s circulation, TheBlaze decided to investigate the shocking claim. We made several calls and sent e-mails to an Interscope Records representative who work with “Slim Shady” (one of the rapper’s stage names).

After repeated attempts to receive an answer, the publicist offered a brief response when asked if the singer is now a born-again Christian. ”He is not,” the message back to TheBlaze read, thus debunking — at least until we hear a response from the rapper himself — the notion that has has personally embraced Jesus Christ’s teachings.

Rumors and intriguing theories surrounding Eminem’s faith are nothing new. As USC Annenberg communications professor Marcia Dawkins writes:

Conspiratorial theories asserting that Mathers is either a Satanist or an Illuminati pawn have reached a broad, mass audience through the Internet. Now, a new meme has been added to the rapper’s spiritual story. Rumor has it that Mathers is now a Born Again Christian. According to rap’s and religion’s insiders, Eminem has “turned his life over to Christ,” and is “building a relationship with God and using that to help him spiritually, and with his addiction problems.”

It is impossible to know, with any accuracy, the truth about Mathers’s spiritual journey. However, the fact that God and Devil worship rumors abound makes it important to examine his public endorsements in lyrics as a meaningful way to draw audiences in through passionate condemnation.

Either Eminem has not yet announced to his record label that he has converted or the notion, itself, is an unfounded rumor. Or — perhaps he’s still in the process of figuring out his spiritual journey. Regardless, the rapper’s turn from a controversial figure touting questionable themes to a gospel-driven performer would certainly be fascinating to observe.

I prayed for the salvation of Osama bin Laden for years. His testimony would have been overwhelming for the Muslim community. Likewise, Mathers could have a huge impact on those who look up to him. Look at what Saul of Tarsus did for the emerging Way.

Please do not judge him before hearing him out.

It makes me sad to read so much vitriol for someone who’s spirit is in such peril. M&M’s influence is huge, he’s not just a rapper, to many young kids, he’s an inspiration. He’s not the typical rapper, nor does he produce the typical rap of hip hop culture. I’m no big fan of his, but if he was to make the choice of life over death, it could have a huge impact on many other young people in our society. Not to mention, he would make an excellent soldier in God’s war. I truly hope that he can peace either way. I really and truly hope that the rest of those here can find the same peace and hope as well.

It just goes to show you all WHO IS and WHO IS NOT TRUE followers of Christ on this board. READ THE COMMENTS. Those who wish M&M well are deeply spiritual people (maybe they are or aren’t followers of Christ) and have favor in the eyes of God because of their loving hearts.

And then there are those who are negative and nasty towards M&M and people like him, who have had a change of heart about their lives. These are the same people who have lost hope in their fellow man because they believe there is no hope for themselves. WRONG. There will always be hope, right up until your last breath on this earth.

I PRAY that those on this board who are the latter (negatives and sour), do some real deep soul-searching for your own heart and mind. If you do, you will also have favor before God (NOT salvation UNTIL you ask for it, but God will lead you into something better so you too, can find truth and hope for your own life). If you do not, then Satan already has you and it will become VERY DIFFICULT to escape the devil’s clutches. Look around you. Evil comes from Satan (in language, in TV, in porn, in movies that are PG-13 to0 X rated) etc. If you do not see the evil in all those things and you believe that is just the way of life, then SATAN ALREADY OWNS YOU.

I pray that M&M has gotten his act together for righteousness. That would be simply WONDERFUL!

Well, I respect your right to listen to what you prefer, but I think rappers offer nothing of any value…including entertainment…… and in the case of the black ones and those like M&M, they illustrate the ongoing downward trend in a society that is fast plummeting to the lowest common denominator.

So many of his fellows in the field seem to glob onto one religion or another for monetary gain and a measure of fame in the tabloids (Madonna trying to convert to some arcane Jewish sect, for example). If it is a true conversion he really doesn’t have to prove anything but to himself and his God, the rest of the truth of his faith will follow after.

They offer just as much as any other artist in rock, pop, etc. You’re still lumping the “black ones” into a group. Sure, there are plenty of rappers that not only have no talent, their music sucks to.

I think music as a whole these days illustrates the downward trend in society. There are hardly in “real” artists out there, let alone artists with talent that produce good music. Almost every song and music video has something to do with sex, no matter kind of music it is.

      Amen, Plowman.

I hope he IS at least honestly searching, as I hope for everyone. It would be wonderful to know that he did accept salvation through Jesus, but of course also foolish to assume so based on a rumor.

Believe me (well, don’t take my word for it :P), if anyone does that searching honestly, they will eventually find out that it’s true, having done it myself and knowing for a fact now that it is. I get the sense that many people simply assume beforehand that the search will be fruitless and so they don’t bother. But it’s worth it!

Amazing story! There’s a prophet named Kim Clement that wrote in his 2006 book ” Call Me Crazy but I’m hearing God” this exact prediction of Eminem becoming a Christian (among hundreds of other predictions that have come true). It’s in print. I remember be shown this when the book came out and thinking “there’s no way he’s right on this too.” This is the same Christian Prophet who was the only one to predict 9/11 exactly, Hurricane Sandy, Katrina, a black president in 2008 (predicted in 1998) and the exact location where Bin Laden was and said it would happen the same weekend as the Royal Wedding! Wow! Note: He also wrote that 50 cent would become a Christian (which would be another great story). He was even invited to the White House throughout the 2000′s. God bless you Kim Clement!

First, Eminem, whether you like his rap/music or whatever, is certainly NOT a no-talent hack. I don’t care much for rap at all, but this guy is certainly a gifted lyricist and word smith. Though the theme of the song “Kim” was bastardized as hateful, violent and mysoginistic, a critical listening to the lyrics enables one to hear the depth of this man’s emotional trauma at the dissolution of his marriage, the recognition of his own responsibility in it… it is raw, and painfully honest. I don’t care for the violence portrayed in the song, but it was about as honest an expression of the anger, pain, sadness and regret as you could imagine. Took testicular fortitude to do that.

And once again many Blazers show me all I need to know about the Christians of Christianity. PLOWMAN and others… If there is a God, I hope you are immeasurably blessed by Him for your humility and compassion. But folks like SOCIALISTSLAYER and some others who were crass and dismissive… you ought to reexamine your faith, you charlatans. I don’t give a rat’s 8uttocks if Eminem becomes a Christian, but it seems to me that Christians ought to be happy for such a conversion, instead of nasty and hateful like plenty of you were. You embarrass yourselves, and do damage to the image of your Christ.

Ok, to all here who are condemning this story without even knowing if it is truth or rumor: if you claim to be a Christian, then SHAME ON YOU for being a hypocrit. If you do not claim to be a Christian but say you don’t care about this story, then my question to you would be, “Why even bother to respond if you really do not care?” By responding, you show that you do care, so your comment are invalid.

If he has become a Christian, then I say Praise the Lord. NO ONE can become a Christian by doing good deeds nor by birth. It is ONLY by God’s Grace, and believing that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, and rose victoriously from the grave on the 3rd day of His death.

    an ‘illuminati pawn’?
so in addition to Scientology now there is a religion based upon the FICTION of Dan Brown?
and this new religion is put up as an equal with Christianity…
and the possibility that Eminem has been and remains a Christian, but one whose behavior are not (gasp) always Christ like is somehow ignored… that he would have to have ‘become a born again’…

it is terrifying the utter lack of not only investigation and fact presentation in this article and too much of modern journalism, but the absence of critical thinking demonstrated in the article.

I would like to clarify your statement about belonging to whom:
Simply stated: If you are not FOR Christ (repentant), then you are by default FOR satan (John 3:16-18).

As for Eminem’s conversion, I am not the judge of his heart, however I can put logic into practice and critique his actions. If his actions are not of Christ, then I know. Good trees bear good fruit, bad trees bear bad fruit. Good trees cannot bear bad fruit and bad trees cannot bear good fruit (although some bad trees try and fail).
Example of a true conversion (as far as I can tell) is Brian “Head” Welch from Korn.
I will pray that Eminem has, or shortly will, find Christ and God’s love. I pray that God will cover him and protect him until the time comes that God feels he can withstand the arrows that will come his way. The discipleship process can be slow with many set backs (I have first hand experience at stumbling often). God bless

It is a good posability that a tax expert has convinced him the need to start the Eminem Church out of his mansion and get a tax exemption from the IRS. This is what The Rev. al Sharpton did except it was found out the only church members are family and the IRS says that al owes 1.2 million $$. Last I heard was that it stalled when Obama became president. He was talking about the Whities when he talked about spreading the wealth. Remember Charlie Rangel and the $800,000 he owed on his foreign condos – he got a slap on the hand from Congress.I wonder if paid them or they were written off.

How do you know Eminem is a bad rapper if you don’t “get” rap and think it’s all “a joke”?

That’s like saying “football sucks”. I don’t “get it”… and “Tom Brady is a bad QB.”

      @LION

He’s actually one of the best rappers of all time. He has a lot of good stuff.

      @EAST

Tom Brady is overrated. All the pats success (including TB’s) comes from one of the greatest coaches of all time—Beclichick.

      lol A_CALL….

      Totally agree on Eminem.
      Disagree on Brady…..

How do you explain The Hoody having a 36-44 record with The Browns from 1991 until 1995 with only one playoff appearance?

Bet it would’ve been better if he had someone as good as Brady with him…

I don’t think you can take someone with no talent and have a really good team. TB does have talent and is a good QB, which is clear. However, the way people hold him to be the top 3 (of all time) some even are so bold to say the greatest ever is absurd. All I ever hear are excuses for TB and the Pats. So many factors go into having a good team…and many people fail to remember that Football is a TEAM sport. Belichick is just amazing (regardless of his past coaching).

@lion – “He barely tries to rhyme or be rhythmic about it”

Do you ever think back on something you have said in the past and feel embarrassed about it? You shouldn’t comment on things your ass has no clue about. There is no one in all of music past or present who has better rhythm or rhymes than Eminem. He is the #1 act in ALL of music for the last decade. The radio only plays his worst songs. The ones he made “for the radio”. You should educate yourself FIRST and then add your two cents.

Ok obviously you know literally nothing about poetry, talent, and musical theory because if you had even a slight amount of information and learning on these subjects you would understand that eminem is one of the most talented rappers alive today, bringing shame to almost all Christian rappers who bring not even half the talent as someone rooted in the ways of the world. Everything rhymes, in fact many of his songs the entire verses will rhyme, as well as internal rhyming. Not something that could be done by many poets, let alone uneducated rappers. since you obviously know nothing about popular music of the day, you are unequipped to be a part of our society. please educate yourself, ignorance like yours grows leads to ignorance that would write an article about some rumor as if we have never heard religious/conspiratorial claims about certain musicians.

I’m sure we’ll all know soon enough. He cannot perform the same type of “music” that he’d done in the past and at the same time be a born-again Christian.

Eminem’s rise to glory included his “coming out” hit with these ‘lyrics’ – “My name who? My name is what” My name is Slim-slim-slim-slim-slim Slim Shady!”….

Let me try and complete SOME of the story for Billy – Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), better known by his stage name Eminem (stylized as EMINƎM) and by his alter ego Slim Shady.

Soooooo…which one converted? Was it Marshall? Slim? or, in fact, Eminem?

IMPORTANT To NOTE – “The [RUMOR], based on a source from Detroit, Mich., claims that the rapper is removing himself “further from the depths of the music industry.” [is] allegedly predicated upon the conversion to Christianity.”

    If that don’t explain all…

I say welcome. If you listen to the lyrics of Eminem, if you really listen, he is not different. So Marshall, welcome. Glad to have you. Now, for my fellow bipolars out there, I penned a song you will relate to, maybe: In Two.

    Taking the day
    In the usual way
    Looking for someone
    Or something to play

    Working the basics
    Of a single-mind taken
    Feeling you were alone
    But you were mistaken

And when the day was done
    After the setting sun
    You find, there’s you
    And this other one

    And what do you do?
    Finding your cut thru
    And finally know
    You are really in two

    For bipolar deals a woe
    High for awhile then low
    Dressed for a party
    Then decide not to go

    Awake for the night
    Asleep by the day
    Laugh at the moon
    Nod at play
    Conquer the world
    Lose your way

    A north and south
    Just like Earth’s pole’s
But cannot tell up and down
    Even if a frozen stick
    Standing in a magnetic hole

    Is there something wrong?
Can you again right get along?
    Will others see the split?
    Can puzzle pieces again fit?

Some meds make you really happy
    Some make you really sad
But some may be the glue
    To make you really glad

But all is like an unseen deck of cards, shuffling the cards of life, some right side up, some upside down, but the next card played leads to smiles or frowns, but the game it must be played, and for that reason really we have all excitedly stayed, in one, or, in two, splayed.

Our teacher taught peace and love, nothing more than we ca

It would be very good news if true. I guess we will see.

Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

The Lord makes it pretty simple.

I also pray this is true. If we could fathom how bad it will be to live for enternity without God then we would be out witnessing to others everyday. God cares about EVERYONE regardless of their actions and will keep knocking on our hearts until we either acept or decline Him, he gives us this choice because He loves us so much. He woul;d have a wonderful testimony, God can change anyone at anytime if you answer His call. He stands at the door and knocks, if you notice in the picutre of Christ at the the door there is no door knob, you have to let Him in. Lord we pray at this exact moment that You wil change this man’s heart!
