The streaming player Roku — a device that’s used to stream content like Netflix, Hulu, TheBlaze TV and other subscriptions through the Internet onto a television — recently signed a deal with Time Warner Cable to offer an app that will allow it to function like a traditional cable box service.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Eric Savitz for Forbes wrote that Roku announced the deal, which brings its device’s use more into a mainstream capacity. Time Warner subscribers who also have a Roku box will be able to stream up to 300 television channels without any additional charges.

Here’s how TechCrunch described it:

The new channel will allow Time Warner cable subscribers to log in using their cable credentials and begin streaming live TV in their homes. While Time Warner Cable has made apps like this available on the iPad, iPhones, and through Web browsers, this will be the first time that a connected TV device will have the cable distributor’s programming. Despite previous announcements with CE manufacturers like Samsung and Sony at previous CES events, Time Warner Cable will land on Roku first.

“The big picture is that TV is moving to the Internet,” Roku CEO Anthony Wood said in an interview with Forbes. “All TV eventually is going to [be] over the Internet.”

Forbes reported this breakdown to show that shift is already occurring:

Wood says that about 30% of Roku users to do not use a pay TV service, although the other 70% – and he says the balance has been pretty consistent as the company has grown. Of the 30% without cable service, about 10% came to Roku without previously having cable service. The other 20% drop cable after buying their Roku box.

The deal is being hailed as a milestone for the two companies. It’s the first time Time Warner has allowed a third party to access its content and Roku is functioning more and more like a cable box replacement.

TheVerge pointed out that the channels available to be streamed will be limited by what’s included in the subscriber’s cable package.

I dumped satellite TV (Dish Network) about a year ago for Roku and over-the-air TV. I’ve had little problems with Roku so far.

This article does confirm that Glenn was right about the future of TV. Chalk another one up in the “Glenn Beck is right column.”

  I too have Roku ..though I also still have cable on my large tv .. I haven’t had many issues with the Roku and with my Blaze subscription and Amazon Prime and other free channels .. it has been a good experience .. I agree this is the future.

  What kind of subscription prices are you seeing for this box in reality? Cable costs about $160 per month here, and that’s just for basic. It’s insane.

  Netflix – $8.98/month
  Hulu= – $8.98/month
  Amazon Prime – $80/year (but that includes free 2nd day shipping on any purchase – no minimum – for a whole year.
  
  If I could add just the networks I watch on TV; I’d gladly pay $15/month per network – that would cut my bill by over 50%. Just pay for unlimited internet at 16 Mbps (I found that 8 Mbps or slower results in the movie stuttering or stopping – you need a constant/clean 8 Mbps or faster).

I had an awful experience with Dish Network. The satellite would always stop working, and every time it messed up, my Tivo wouldn’t record my kids’ TV shows. It would go out almost every day. After a few times of trying to get that fixed, we cancelled our subscription within the 30 day money back guarantee, and they refused to give us our money back. Didn’t have the same problem with direct TV, but it doesn’t work with out Tivo.

VRW Conspirator, the Roku in our master bedroom is on wifi, it’s even the other end of the house from the router. My GBTV login is saved.

When I’ve had problems with channels in the past, deleting and replacing them usually solves it.

The same Roku in the master bedroom dropped it’s internet connection a few weeks ago and wouldn’t reconnect. After looking around for a potential solution, I found something on the Roku support site. I unplugged the Roku box for a few minutes and then plugged it in and turned it on. When I connected to the internet, it worked and hasn’t dropped the signal since then.

  I got ROKU for the simple reason that it was the only way to get Glenn Beck. I love it. Wish you could record from there, but I guess technology is just not there yet. We still kept our Direct TV for my husband’s NFL ticklet.

everything is on the net for free if you do a little looking, just make sure you have decent antivirus protection, and be sure to close any pop ups you come across. Out of curiosity, i wanted to see how long it took me to find and have foxnews running on my laptop (which is plugged into my TV like a roku box) it literally took me less than five min after checking the links after searching foxnews livestream. check it out. a google search of free streaming tv yields similarly useful results, the same for movies…check it out.

  I bought a long cable that’s compatible between my TV and computer. And the web is wide open now. Finding content is harder, but many of my favorite shows are also on the internet. I wish more websites would stream the program or story to story uninterrupted.
  A way to stream internet wirelessly, I understand, is through Apple TV (which otherwise, doesn’t offer quite as much as Roku).

  I’m always amazed when I go without cable for awhile, and then try it again. The garbage on TV is so pronounced when you see it again after a long time of no cable. It’s true that tv desensitizes you, and you accept the filth after awhile.

I had so called ROKU problems, mainly while watching the the GB show. While to a comcast rep at Best Buy,we discovered that my Comcast modem should be replaced with a newer version. Did so. No more problems.

Dish Network is better, that being said. We purchased a Roku and are getting ready to dump Dish, we have the basic package. I would like to get away from Comcast for internet. There are no choices and they charge High.

I bought my Roku boxes specifically to dump cable. Now if Time Warner wants to sell me individual channels that I can add as Roku Apps, that would be great but if I have to subscribe to cable then why would I need Roku?

My fear is that Time Warner and Dish Network are getting in tight with Roku as a means of killing it off (much like NBC has done with Hulu, which used to be an awesome service and now is worthless).

  I went with Roku last year for the same reasons. Cut ties with cable TV. Couldn’t see paying for a service that wastes almost half my time with ads, and mercilessly edits the films I watch. I don’t buy that arrangement. I also save enough money to buy a big screen TV each year. (if I thought I wanted too)

the cable providers wont let their business model go down w/o a fight. Comcast is raising internet prices Jan 15th. you can bet its because of netflix and other online content providers. We must have more ISP providers. Hopefully technology will bring new providers and ways to provide.

This service is about the stupidest thing I’ve heard today. I cut cable over a year ago and will NEVER return to ANY cable provider EVER again. The most I spend is 8 bucks a month for netflix. I download torrents for everything else. Yeah, torrents are an ethical question, but when it comes to Hollywood, there are no ethics…

  I do the same thing. And I have a Plex server running on a desktop computer so I can stream everything I have downloaded to any of the TVs in the house with Roku boxes and it works slicker than anything.
  
  Plus the Plex plugin for YouTube brings direct access to YouTube back to Roku and the “MyPlex” service allows me to que up all sorts of videos on YouTube and other video sites and watch them on the TVs as well.

  Same situation here. Lots of Plex use, and I have several friends who use Plex as well and share each others servers with each other. Odds are if it was on TV and worth watching I have commercial free on demand access to it.
  
  My one issue why I haven’t dropped cable yet:
  
  Live HD content specifically for sports. If I can find away to get that, in good quality, for the NHL with out blackouts, I can finally cut cable.
  
  Hockey is quite literally the only thing I watch on cable anymore.

  As for the ethics, you are on the good side. Each sane person should boycott Hollywood. They are so arrogant and corrupt that they spit on the same people and values that made them rich, they despise American values, hardworking and Integrity. Remember how fanatically their brainless starlets like Scarlet Johanson supported Obama; now Hollywood just got a huge tax exception from the Gov. So they are getting your money anyway. I don’t watch their movies at all as most of them are nothing but propaganda.

  LB – We got ride of land line a couple of years ago and just dropped everything on cable except for the local channels, saving us $95 a month.

I am not a computer savvy person, but I also had trouble with GBTV not loading correctly, not allowing me to ‘play from beginning”, etc. When I talked with Roku Tech support, they helped by walking through the uninstall and reinstall procedure, THEN the tech support lady told me the difficulty is with The Blaze TV (technical talk which I didn’t understand, but the bottom line). Bottom line: any time you change anything with your Blaze subscription (profile, password, payment method, etc) it interferes with the Roku connection for the Blaze TV. To simplify it, she told me all changes (as noted above) have to go through the same ‘pathway’ as their connection to Roku does. maybe I am not explaining it good enough, but it’s like using the same door to enter the kitchen, the garage, the attic, etc. A magic door that has to decipher what your intent is before you go through it. If the Blaze had a dedicated pathway just for Roku alone these ‘cliches wouldn’t happen. Maybe someone out there with technical expertise can explain this better. Hope this helps get the problem solved. The onus is on the technicians at the The Blaze now.

  I have been using my ROKU2XD for about a year now. Most off the time, the Blaze comes through great with no service interruption. I have however had incidents where the program stops and restarts incessantly. I reboot the ROKU, and that usually fixes it. I always respond to the blaze that I am having difficulty, and what the difficulty is. The last 2 monts has been outstanding service. I really enjoy their programming.

When you put this together with the other news from Time Warner, the intent becomes clear. TW is positioning itself to control and profit from all streaming over the internet.

The plan described in this article seems to offer no advantage to the consumer, because it doesn’t. But TW is also working on eliminating unlimited internet so users will not be able to stream very much video without paying extraordinary additional charges. The only choice will be to use this box.

Net result is that not only will you pay Netflix a monthly fee, but you will also pay TW a monthly fee.

I must be missing something here… If I have access to TW Cable via my cable box, which is using a high performance dedicated video stream, why would I want to offload that to my much slower internet bandwidth? I dumped TW Cable for my Tivo, becuase I was tired of spending nearly $100 a month for just a few shows I was interested in watching (especially after Glenn left Fox!). The only feature that would ever modivate me to go back to a cable provider is the ability to do alaCarte channel selection, at $1-$3 a month per channel.

  OH, DEAR LORD, stop the world, I want to get off. Things are changing so fast and I really don’t want to learn new technical things. I have no idea how to sign up for Glenn Beck’s TV show, so I miss out.
  I have no idea what roku means. I have no idea how to use any of this if I had access to it………….
  
  The only thing I know how to work anymore is the radio, and part of the the time our local station goes off the air for some unknown reason. Guess I’ll just sit back and act dumb and ignorant like most dems.

  TV is already using Internet, so are phones. I question how many divorces happen due to that change, going from phone that has infinite possibilities to a digital phone that has finite possibilities, so tone is lost and couples fight over why they don’t sound interested in what they are saying(hint, they are, it’s just the damn phone.)
  
  TV and phone and all that other junk may not be completely on the net yet, but they use the same backbone, which the large phone companies are the master of.

Do not understand any benefit in this, all you are doing is eliminating the cable box, no reduction in price of the subscription. If you could choose channels you wanted that might be different. The basic cable TV package carries local channels you can get with a digital antenna for free or you can watch current network TV shows a day later on Hulu Plus for 7.99 a month. No deal here

  What I think the benefit is, is that you can stop paying the STB rental fee. I pay (comcrap) $10 a month for the living room plus 8 for the DVR service (wonder if this will do dvr services) and $2 for a simple standard def converter box for the bedroom. I used to be able to just plug the set into the wall, but now can’t do that.

  The problem is they bundle all of this stuff to keep you committed to THEM. And it’s become more expensive if you pay for cable, pay for internet, pay for telephone…………I know nothing about any of it, but if I lived alone, I have rabbit ears for TV and dial up for the internet and local service for phone. Thank the Lord, my precious son provides a cell phone for me or I’d be land-locked to local service only.

I have been advocating for years to be permitted to design my own programming package. I no longer want a portion of my monthly fee to DirecTV to be paid to CurrenTV, MSNBC or the pornographic “gay” networks. With a bit more research, I too will cut the cable (or satellite) for good. The providers need to put their customers and stockholders over their ideology.

My Roku box interrupts constantly and will not play live shows from the beginning – like Glenn Becks.
I report this constantly, to no avail. It works fine for movies – Amazon, Netflix. I probably will not renew my Beck membership until this problem gets resolved.

  Have contacted the blaze TV and also Roku about this issue with the blaze app. Every live show is interrupted multiple times by reloading or exiting. Did get one email response from tech support at Blaze TV…had me changing router settings, uninstalling and reinstalling the app and then wanted me to shut off my router firewall, um, no. All other streaming works flawlessly, I am using a wired connection so the excuse that it is a wireless problem doesn’t fly. Am also so frustrated that thinking of stopping my subscription. Responsive customer service should be a part of the deal

  I think I’d have been more excited about this is The Blaze went directly to Time Warner and cut the deal. At least then I wouldn’t have to sink more money into my Blaze subscription.

  Hear hear, I struggled with this non-stop for almost every day since GBTV came to Roku. It worked fine until the roku 2 came out. Shortly after the Roku 2 came out, my Roku 1 started studdering and sputtering, no matter what I do. The Roku 2 I have runs it fine, the Roku 1 no longer does.
  
  Technical Issue: For some, unknown, reason, it seems they lock their bandwidth in at 1.5mbit. This likely causes part of the issue, as well as their very constrictive codec selection. I don’t think they have the best “MLB” stuff they promised (or were promised). I fear with seeking sat/cable it will get worse.
  
  I have a 50 mbit internet connection, everything else on the internet works great. Everything else on my Roku 1 and Roku 2 works great. GTBV/TheBlazeTV Support has been equally unresponsive, I’ve given up.
  
  I don’t like Cable TV anymore either, I want al la cart. FoxNews, local channels, cspan, that’s about all I watch. I’ve tried every which way to get FoxNews without sat or cable, I finally cut the cord since I can’t get it without all the other stuff. Hopefully this leads to a way to get FoxNews or other one-off channels without buying it all.

  The interruptions remind me of when Glenn Beck was on CNN and I lived in California. Every week it seemed out of the blue some infomericial would kick in over Glenn’s show and it pissed me off. I emailed and called people complaining, it would stop, and then restart a couple weeks later. I found it immensely annoying, I never knew if I would be able to view the show that day until a few minutes into it. I felt it was intensional, it never went away.

  My Roku does the same to the TheBlaze I watch Netflix, Amazon, Hulu flawlessly every night. TheBlaze is a constant stop and restart zone. I’ve resorted to connecting my iPad to my tv solely to watch TheBlaze.

So what about those of who cannot afford the Internet. I have to go to my local library in order to go on to the Internet since I cannot afford Internet connection at home. Also I had to discontinue cable 4 years ago. The price got so high and since I am retired I cannot afford it. I had an antenna installed and that is the only way I can watch TV. There a lot of people out there like me. So I guess it will come down to not watching TV at all and just listen to the radio. Then I guess some idiot will decide to make money by making people not being able to listen to free radio? God help us!

  You have the option to get a smart phone and access it that way. Yeah, it comes with a fee, but so does your wired phone.
  
  And unless I’m mistaken, Apple / AT&T have plans that get you the brand new phone for free with a contract. That doesn’t get you the Blaze subscription, but it gets you 90% of the way there. Internet, streaming, a screen to watch it on (albeit small)…
  
  You still have to pony up the $100 a year for the subscription. Well worth it, as far as I’m concerned.
  
  I just can’t see ponying up that *next* $100 or more for the Roku box when I already have so many ways to access the same content otherwise.

  if you want that channel to stick around, don’t advertise it.
  FoxNews sues anyone who streams their channel without permission and your channel will get a letter of “Cease and Desist” if they get wind of it.
  I have known people who were streaming FoxNews on Justintv who got those letters.

What a brilliant idea – helps to reduce competition, streamline AND focus unlimited data collection.

Also gives more impetus to politicians who want to ‘regulate’ the internet, erahhhh, “for the children”…

  Once the regime sees that their channels are the ones no one subscribes to and can no longer gain advertising and distribute propaganda, they will step in and change it in the interest of fairness. In their eyes individual channel choice will be seen as too much freedom for us little people. i.e. If a person subscribes to a conservative channel they will force the company to include a progressive one. There by ensuring their propaganda machine still gets money.

I don’t have a roku so I watch gbtv on my computer. I guess I’ll get it so I can watch GB on my tv…..just in case you wanted to know this info….(sarc).

So you have to be a Time Warner cable subscriber, right?
Why not just watch your cable box?

I have Roku to get AWAY from cable.

  This is capitalism at work. Time Warner sees an opportunity to increase revenues by selling a-la-carte TV content over the Internet. They will be a competitor to other services and this will likely increase the availability of on-demand programming. It seems like a good move to me.

  I wondered the same thing. I have roku for GBTV and I had time warner. I switched to dish network because I was unhappy with time warner. Now GBTV is on dish so I don’t use my Roku. I used to get frustrated with the roku because it would pause during live broadcasts all the time. I have time warner interenet service, no other comparable high speed internet in my area.

  My husband and I just decided to cancel cable. Such garbage on TV and with young children in the house we just decided that it is such a negative influence and distraction. If a la carte becomes an option we may come back or access through the roku. It seems crazy to me that you can’t just pay for the channels you want.We love our roku!

  Let me rephrase your question, maybe that will help:
  
  Why would I want to BUY a Roku when I can just RENT a digital cablebox (and remote!) from my provider?
  
  This would allow a currnet subscriber with a Roku and a TWC subscription to dump their cable box fees, lowering their bill.

I got a Roku to watch Blaze TV when it first started airing. But my Roku doesn’t save The Blaze channel in the lineup, which means every time I want to watch Blaze TV I have to get the code from my computer again. (It does save the information for everything else on the Roku). Just curious if anyone else has that problem?

  Mine saves info, so I would suggest you call Roku and have them troubleshoot. They were very responsive when programming lockup problems were on GBTV.

  Have you tried resetting Roku? Unplug the power source and start over. Maybe your box is faulty???

  I’ve never heard of that. I do no have that problem with my Roku. I’d call their customer support and have them help you work through fixing the problem.

  No, never heard anything about this. I automatically went to my lineup, no problem, and I never have to log in when I go to TheBlazeTV. Just click and wait for the program to start.

  only problem I have with my Roku…on TheBlaze or any other app…is the stupid “loading” crap that pops up…
  some say it is only on theBlaze…but I get it all the time on many different apps that stream video…I think they need to increase the buffer size in the Roku box…
  I am on Wifi, some say that is it, but others have the same type of problems on wired….
  My router is not being changed, sorry, it is locked down as much as it can be and I am not opening up channels just to stop an inconvenience…
  for those that are saying they are going to cancel theBlaze because of this… TROLLS LIE all the time…what is more important…a 30 sec wait to rebuffer or 30 sec to stop and reload, even reboot the Roku….or the importance of the information and staying informed..
  
  sorry…my inconvenience doesn’t stop me from wanting to be educated and informed…not to mention there are tons of things I keep finding on the Roku for my kids…am just a few inches from dropping my FIOS….and Liberty Treehouse is GREAT for my kids…with or without rebuffering…
  
  you would think that they 8 Gig SD chip in the Roku I bought could be reconfigured with a software update to the Roku to act like an increase in RAM and Buffering…sure would speed up the stupid little box…it only takes my computer 10-20 minutes to DL a 2 hour movie and only about 2 gigs… use the SD chip for that ROKU..you dolts…

  You all just shot down my conspiracy theory that there was a liberal tech working at Roku who was forcing GBTV to not save. Eventually everyone would cancel because it’s such a hassle to look up the code.
  
  With that theory shot, I’ll have more time to work on proving that we never really landed rovers on Mars…
