White House Petition Calls for Obama Admin to Designate the Catholic Church a ‘Hate Group’

On Christmas Day, a petition was added to the White House web site, urging the U.S. government to “officially recognize the Roman Catholic Church as a hate group.” According to a brief description accompanying the plea, the basis for the designation is the church’s stance on same-sex marriage and homosexuality.

“In his annual Christmas address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Benedict XVI, the global leader of the Roman Catholic Church, demeaned and belittled homosexual people around the world,” the petition reads. “Using hateful language and discriminatory remarks, the Pope painted a portrait in which gay people are second-class global citizens.”

The text goes on to note that Pope Benedict claimed that same-sex families “are threatening to society.” The individual behind the initiative accused the Catholic leader of implying that gays are also “sub-human.” As a result of the pope’s recent words, the petition argues that the Church meets the criteria to be called a hate group by both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

The effort to urge condemnation from the White House was sparked by Pope Benedict’s Christmas message. As TheBlaze previously reported (as per AP), the Catholic leader has taken his opposition to gay marriage to new heights with a strong denunciation of how people today are manipulating their sex and gender to alter their God-given nature.

White House Petition Calls for Catholic Church to be Called a Hate Group

A screen shot from the controversial White House petition.

Benedict made the comments in his annual Christmas speech to the Vatican bureaucracy — one of his most important speeches of the year and one he dedicated this year to promoting family values. However, following the posting of the petition, Peter Sprigg, senior fellow for policy studies at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., defended the pope. The Catholic News Agency has more:

Sprigg argued that the petition is “distorting” the Pope’s words, which do not actually include hateful or discriminatory language.

In his address to the cardinals, the Pope did not directly reference “gay marriage” or “homosexuality” at all. Rather, he defended the Church’s understanding of sexuality and “the true structure of the family, made up of father, mother, and child.”

The Holy Father refuted the modern notion of sex as “a social role that we choose for ourselves,” rather than “a given element of nature” and “bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being.” [...]

Sprigg argued that the petition is misleading and “clearly has political purpose.”

Currently, the effort has 2,184 signatures. The goal, by Jan. 24, is to capture 25,000 total signatures in order to reach the 25,000 goal of receiving an official review from the Obama administration.

Doesn’t this in fact make the people who are calling for this, a hate group? Seems logical to me. What has the Catholic Church ever done to them for them to despise it so?
    ————————————————
Well, that all depends on if your ” group” aligns itself with liberal ideals and PC- in which case you are not classified as a hate group. If your group believes in God, His Word and a free country, then yes, you are considered by the left to be a hate group. So I guess that makes me a big hater. So be it.

They shouldn’t. It’s a simple answer, and probably why with more than 2 weeks gone by since the petition started, it only has less than 10% of the signatures it even needs to be looked at by anyone in Congress.

You have a lot of hate in you for a Christian. Your tearing apart of the Catholic Faith is exactly what this government wants to see. You are helping them break it down with your similar attitude. They’ve taken away Religious Freedom for Catholics in Obamacare. And part of that is fine with you. They want to hear all the, “Oh well, they’re only Catholics.”. Once Religious Freedom goes for Catholics, you are right that you are next. We are in this together, and it would do us good to love each other, because He told us to! So, quit throwing logs in the fire with the Anti-Catholic rhetoric. That’s like saying people who oppose legalizing drugs are a hate group. MJ crowd could become the new oppressed demographic.

Obama objected to the clause in a bill that protected chaplains in the military from being required to perform gay marriage ceremonies against their conscience. The president says he will stand with the gay rights. I would guess he realizes the Democrats are going to be losing votes based on their views of morality in modern society so they have to replace them with groups who oppose laws that suppress their desired behavior.

First and foremost. I have to say the Catholic church is confused.

They oppose homosexuality, but the two men surrounding the pope are wearing White and Magenta Dresses with feminine lace.

Secondly. We the PEOPLE Need to start some real PETITIONS to the White House

    Petition #1
Repeal the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.
This will end Income Tax and will stop the Deficit because we will print OUR OWN money WITHOUT INTEREST ATTACHED.

    Petition #2
Quit the United Nations and get them of OUR SHORES !!!!

    Petition #3
Bring criminal Charges against whoever is behind Geoengineering.
They have committed assault on ALL of us, by making us breath in Aluminum, Barium and Strontium. to name a few.

    Petition #4
Demand that GMOs – Genetically Modified Organisms, be labeled in our GROCERY STORES.

    Petition #5
Demand that ANY politician that ever tries to tamper with our BILL of RIGHTS should be immediately arrested, for high treason.
Even discussing the matter, is an “INFRINGEMENT”

The real question for everyone is this:

If homosexuality is a genetic predisposition and not a choice then God cannot condemn the biology that He created because it would make his will on the matter unjust. If homosexuality is a choice and not genetically driven, then homosexuals deserve no special rights, privlidges, or protections beyond what any person in the US would recieve. It would also be “rightly” called a sin by Christians because it’s somthing a person chooses to do.

How any individual weighs in on the above will determine how they feel about the matter.

      Hahaha, what? No.

That’s like saying God created (most) men wit hthe desire to spread their DNA among any women they can find, so monogamy must be unjust.

God created homosexuals with homosexual attraction. They have a tougher lot in life than heterosexuals, but in the same way that I’m commanded to not commit adultery, so are gays. You can follow God’s laws or not; that’s free will. Nothing in the situation is making God’s will unjust.

Well, twin studies have shown that homosexuality is NOT genetically determined, and animal studies have shown that it appears in reaction to a crowded environment. At most homosexuality may be “epigenetic”; that is, genes may determine that, after exposure to some as yet unknown combination of pollutants found in crowded environments, one individual will become homosexual while another becomes sterile.

Doesn’t mean we need to persecute homosexuals. Doesn’t mean we need to say that homosexual behavior is acceptable. I read the scientific evidence as meaning that we need to be very, very careful about crowding and polluting our environment.

The Catholic Church has historically attracted large numbers of people, many of whom achieved influence in the church because they were very strange. Plenty of people don’t like their teachings either. I don’t like some of their teachings myself. So I don’t attend the Catholic Church. Why should anyone else have more of a problem than that? Or is their problem that the Bush administration allowed government “partnerships” with religious missions, so in some communities beneficiaries of public services may be, or suspect they are, victims of religious discrimination?

We all have a free will to act or not to act … a free will that we exercise every day in regards to right and wrong when sinful desires/temptions present themselves in our daily walk.

Do Catholics not have freewill? I keep hearing these statistics that Catholics voted for this or for that, yet how do we know, because AP or Reuters says so? I didn’t vote for this in either election. Some of the “Catholic” organizations are catholic in name only. So I must lay in it? I’m just as baffled when I see O’ 2012 stickers on cars at my parish and kids private school. I, like many others had this tyrannical evil thrown upon us all, why should Catholics be above the fray? ” … the Catholic leader has taken his opposition to gay marriage to new heights …”

This is simply not true. Pope Benedict XVI has always opposed same-sex marriage, homosexuality and ‘gender’ manipulation, 100% – because this is Catholic Doctrine – Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church have not taken anything to “new heights” – 100% is 100% is 100%.

It’s hilarious that obama’s liberals want the Catholic Church declared a ‘hate group’ because they oppose the sin, but love the sinner. Where is the outrage from these same ignorant libs about the ‘cult of islam’, which also opposes same-sex marriage, homosexuality and ‘gender’ manipulation, but, instead of opposing the sin, and loving the sinner, the cult of islam puts the sinner to death?

There are plenty of ‘hate groups’ in the world, but the Catholic Church is not one of them.

Yes, and the strange thing is that before homosexual lobbyists started throwing possibly AIDS-tinged blood at people, I was very often the only person in a whole office block who would say out loud that what homosexuals do in the privacy of their own homes is their business. Virtually EVERYONE who is now over age 40 used to say worse things about homosexuals than the Pope now says!

Wow, the pansies certainly have their g-strings in a twist over this, don’t they? Heaven forbid should anyone not kowtow to their agenda. Whatever happened to tolerance?

    Oh wait…

Mornin’ BIO! Hope all is well with you!

Don’t ya just love how Islam can be advanced by the Left but Christianity is considered a “hate group”?

Oh…..and I just came across this study which I found to be an accurate reflection of our young, narcissistic trolls who frequent The Blaze. Their inflated egos eventually meet the real world. LOL Enjoy!

@Fubared, probably, as long as said banana has not been surgically removed. :)

@CoPats, good morning! I saw that article earlier today. Un-freakin-believable yet not unexpected. And yes, it’s pretty sad that the left will actively promote the troglodytes of islam and protect those who commit jihad and honor killings yet attack the Catholic church while willfully ignoring all the good the Church has done. Again, not unexpected but still completely pathetic.

I believe that whoever started that petition against the Catholic church is showing hatred and animosity toward the Catholic church. I believe that individual – and anyone who signs that petition – needs to be designated as a hate group.

any insinuation that religion makes homosexuals ‘second class citizens’ is inherently wrong.
the church supports the age old LEGAL definition of marriage. that is all.
they may decry homosexual behavior as wrong or sick or evil… that is opinion.

otherwise, they have no ability to classify citizens, and the present push by organized/ radicalized homosexuals seeks a new right, not to mention actively SEEKS classification as a minority group.

not saying the church is right or that something akin to marriage shouldn’t be acceptable for same sex couples (government doesn’t protect marriage now)… just saying this petition is flawed at its argument.

Sure why not? The Catholics voted for this crap. Not that the petitions mean anything. I guess equating capitalism with terrorism and having Catholics vote for Atheistic Fascism isn’t enough. Not until they allow gay perverted sex on their altars. Ce la vie. This is what the Catholics wanted, the bed they made they must lay in. I’ve defended my last Catholic. Now I will just be amused at the choices they have made, and the course they have set themselves on.

      Cavallo,
What you are doing is similar to what the left does when they divide us by “the rich”, minorities, gender, age…. Not all Catholics voted for Obama and those that did, violated one of the Dogma’s of the church (a requirement of belief to qualify yourself as “Catholic”, therefore they do not practice their religion and are “Catholic” in name only).

If putting people into boxes is the way you want to go, as numbers go far more Protestants and Atheists just didn’t show up to vote, essentially handing the election to Obama. Women, minorities, people who live East of the Mississippi and north of the Mason Dixon line, City dwellers, union members, people under 30 all voted for Obama by a large majority, it was not a flaw in one group or another but a combination of all.

We are failing not as Catholics, Protestants, Black, White, Male, Female, Urbanites, Rural dwellers, Northerners or Southerners, we are failing as Americans, but accepting that would mean that all of us share the blame for not doing enough and is just difficult for some people to admit. Unless and until we are willing to see this, things will not get better…..

      @ CAVALLO:
As a devout (as much as I can be as a sinner), God-fearing,and practicing Roman Catholic, in my experiences, many of those Catholics who voted Obama were generally liberal Catholics-in Name Only (one need only look to Pelosi or Ried as glowing examples of this belief mindset) or don’t have a well-formed understanding of Catholic “Social Justice.

Irregardless, Jesus called all Believers, Catholic or Protestant to hate the Sin and to Love the Sinner.
Though admittedly, it is hard sometimes we must strive to do so and seek forgiveness/repentance when we fail..

@Cavallo: Don’t give up on all Catholics okay? We despise Reid, Pelosi, Kennedy’s as much as you do and we are Catholics. Conservative Catholics. For the life of me I don’t understand why the College of Bishops hasn’t excommunicated these apostates I mention above. And a bunch of bishops and priests, starting with Fordham University and Georgetown University. I don’t get it. We USED to excommunicate and SHUN and refuse communion at the altar to Catholics who publicly went against the churches teachings as Pelosi and Biden and the Kennedy’s publicly do in this day and age. But we have a BUNCH of gutless bishops and priests that the College of Bishops and Pope Benedict do not discipline. This aggravates us Catholics who remember what USED to be in the Catholic Church. Is it about money? How much does the Catholic Church USA bring into the Vatican? I don’t know. It disgusts me too. I don’t know the “Politics” of it but I can tell you it stinks! But, I spent 25 years visiting other denominations too: Foursquare, United Methodist, Episcopal Church USA and I can tell you that politically the churches stink! There is no discipline because of lawsuits that would bankrupt any denomination. I think that is the problem. If you start something the lawsuits would bankrupt everybody. So everyone shuts up. Disgusts me too. Worse thing about being Catholic for me is knowing Pelosi/Biden get communion every Sunday. Puke bucket please.

Pew Research Center 2012 Presidential vote

      Catholic 50 Obama / 48 Romney
      White Catholic 40/59
      Hispanic Catholic 75/21
      Black 95/5

Catholic’s did not elect Obama, Hipanic Catholics and Black Catholics did.
Those votes probably had more to do with immagration and race than religion

Of my Catholic family and friends maybe about 1 in 6 voted for O.

I don’t believe their polls, anyone to say they are Catholic who might have been at one time or not at all just to have their say in a poll.

Just look at the difference with the Democratic Catholics versus Republican ones. Who are the real followers of Christ and biblical teachings?

Are you surprised? Once a person become gay, any threat to the gay community & gay lifestyle automatically becomes a existential threat to their psyche.

The urge to protect the lie is so strong that they will turn on the psychologists, neuro-scientists, biologists & any other branch of science that publishes facts inimical to the lie. The APA has already learned its’ lesson. They will not fight the gay lobby.

But until the lie is deconstructed there will always be contradictions in the “received” truth of the scientific literature.
