Gabrielle Giffords & Mark Kelly Launch Gun Control Initiative in Effort to Combat ‘Gun Lobby’

PHOENIX (TheBlaze/AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband launched an initiative aimed at curbing gun violence on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the Tucson shooting that killed six people and left her critically injured. The announcement of the group comes one day after conservative causes announced a Jan. 19 event aimed at protecting the Second Amendment called “Gun Appreciation Day.”

Giffords and Mark Kelly wrote in an op-ed published in USA Today that their Americans for Responsible Solutions initiative would help raise money to support greater gun control efforts.

“Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources,” they wrote in the column.

They said that it will “raise funds necessary to balance the influence of the gun lobby.”

The move was hinted in Kelly’s recent comments that he and Giffords want to become a prominent voice for gun control efforts.

The couple last week visited Newtown, Conn., where a gunman opened fire in an elementary school, killing 20 children and six adults in December. They also met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a gun control advocate.

The couple was expected to discuss the initiative in an interview airing Tuesday on ABC News. The network offered a preview of the interview Monday and during “Good Morning America” on Tuesday. Kelly described a meeting with a father of a Connecticut victim in which he “just about lost it” after the parent showed him a picture of his child.

When asked by Diane Sawyer about when such violence happens to school children, Giffords responded: “Enough.”

In the op-ed piece, Kelly and Giffords discussed what they deem lawmakers’ inaction on curbing gun violence.

“In response to a horrific series of shootings that has sown terror in our communities, victimized tens of thousands of Americans, and left one of its own bleeding and near death in a Tucson parking lot, Congress has done something quite extraordinary — nothing at all,” Giffords and Kelly wrote in the op-ed.

“This country is known for using its determination and ingenuity to solve problems, big and small. Wise policy has conquered disease, protected us from dangerous products and substances, and made transportation safer. But when it comes to protecting our communities from gun violence, we’re not even trying — and for the worst of reasons.”

They hope to start a national conversation about gun violence and raise funds for political activity, so “legislators will no longer have reason to fear the gun lobby.”

“The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve fellow citizens and leaders who have the will to prevent gun violence in the future,” they wrote.

Tucson will mark the anniversary by ringing bells across the city at the moment that Jared Lee Loughner opened fire at a supermarket where Giffords was meeting with constituents.

But even on a day of remembrance, residents won’t be able to escape the gun debate.

City Councilman Steve Kozachik has organized a gun turn-in program at a local police station Tuesday for people who have decided they no longer want weapons in their homes. He’s hoping it helps bring added pressure as Congress and Arizona’s Legislature come back into session to “keep the conversation” alive.

People giving up their guns will receive $50 gift cards from Safeway — the grocery store chain where Giffords was shot in the parking lot. The grocer contributed $1,000 of the nearly $10,000 Kozachik raised.

He said that as the shooting fades from the public’s mind, issues like controlling the sale of large capacity magazines and keeping guns from the mentally ill need attention.

The event has angered local gun-rights advocates, including an outgoing state senator who plans to gather outside the station and offer people cash for guns instead.

“They’re stealing it — stealing it,” said Frank Antenori, a Republican who was defeated in a congressional primary bid last year. “Can you name me one firearm in working condition that’s worth $50 or less?”

Antenori and Kozachik accused each other of acting out of political motivations. Antenori said the councilman was sullying both the Tucson and Connecticut school shooting victims by the timing of the buyback. Kozachik said the outgoing legislator was just trying to keep his name in the news and remain relevant.

Tucson residents held events over the weekend to mark the anniversary of the Saturday morning when Loughner opened fire with a pistol with a 30-round magazine that he emptied in just 40 seconds.

Rep. Ron Barber, then a Giffords aide, was shot in the thigh and cheek, and went on to replace his boss in Congress. He supports an outright ban on high-capacity magazines and a new federal assault weapons ban while acknowledging there are millions of both already in circulation that will remain there.

“There’s no way that those are going to be taken or collected – there’s no way that’s possible,” Barber said Monday. “But if we can move forward toward controlling the accessibility or access to those magazines or assault rifles we can go a long way to minimizing or possibly preventing future tragedies.”

Barber plans to mark the moment of the shooting at a private gathering with staff and family members. He will also visit a hospital to thank doctors who treated him and other victims and attend an evening prayer service.

Barber also is pushing for better mental health care and early intervention into school bullying, which he said can lead to serious mental health issues.

“I think it’s a very complicated issue and no one or two or even three steps are going to address it or get rid of mass shooting in the future,” Barber said.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican who vetoed GOP-sponsored bills twice in two years that would have allowed guns on school campuses and in public buildings, said Monday she’s expecting more legislation in the wake of the Connecticut shooting, but she offered no suggestions.

“It will be something that I’m sure will be addressed in the Legislature and my ears are all open, and I’m certainly anxious if there is a solution that we get it done,” she said.

Loughner pleaded guilty in the Tucson shooting in November and was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences plus 140 years.

  We need to be careful and smart in how we defend the second amendment. I think we are not thinking two steps ahead here. This is an attack on our freedom on two fronts. Front 1 an head on attack of the second amendment just to see what they can get. Front 2 they are not menioning anything about controlling the psy drugs that a lot of people take in our society, my theory is that they are going to control guns by determining who is mentally sane or stable enough to own guns. Do you not think that most of the people that comment here on the blaze will be considered mentally unstable by the left, therefore disqualifying your ability to own a firearm. We have no problem with not letting felons own guns…..Hope you think about this before you allow them to form your argument for you.

  She should be going after the tobacco Inc. since it was ciggies that detoured the young man that came from the drugstore were he went first rather than go to listen to Gabby first. He was carrying a .45 and had a valid carry permit. I’m talking about the young man that helped the older man hold him down.   Nationally, there are about 1.3 million abortions each year, which works out to 3,562 abortions each day, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. But try and put a stop to that and your violating their rights. I don’t know but this country has gone off the deep end. Fix the US Debt, get the economy growing and reform mental health.   Does this mean the Giffords body guards will be unarmed. I hear all these politicians go on about gun control but never mention the fact that their body guards will be unarmed. M. Bloomburg is the worst example since he has 4 armed body guards.The giffords should be demanding that we put God & prayer back in school. All the violance started after we quit teaching the difference between right & wrong. My kids are in their thirties and they remember a morning prayer and a prayer before each sporting event.   Consider the Iraq war. The bombs became more sophisticated there. IEDs initially were simple defeated by speed. in the 1st 2 years. Later the convoys specially built vehicles MRAPs were built that had as much electronic warfare equipment as a EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft.
  The point is that that they got better at bomb making. If they can, people anywhere can. Did the bomb makers there have high school or college diplomas?

  My guess is when their idol crashes the dollar and the EBT card do not work people will understand why we need ARs and hi-cap mags. The price you pay is occasionally an untreated. mental patient gets one. Let’s hope he never realises a pick up with 100 gallons of gas is a much more effective weapon. I still find it astounding how one could be accused of being somewhat intellectual yet believe a sham like gun control solves the ultimate problem in a decaying society.

Actually, I know these people don’t truly believe this, but it is a much easier avenue for them to travel down. They pass a law, which they feel absolves themselves of any further responsibility and move on. This is how leftists operate. Where’s the “compassion” in that? How does imposing further firearm and ammunition regulations help the fact that half the people in this country cannot properly rear children???

Is Giffords and Kelly trying to be like the Bradys? They should take note that their efforts will be in vain because they contradict the Constitution of the United States. Laws are used to convict criminals, not prevent their actions. The liberals cannot admit that the only policy to prevent gun violence would be to mandate all citizens to be armed or at least have mandatory gun safety classes in our schools.

What kills me is the fact that we are not screaming about tge absolutely obvious hypocrisies. That are being reported. “Wayne LaPierre calls for more guns at schools…. we spoke with so and so official (parent etc.) and they disagreed.” Fast forward to these poor kids first day back to a new school. “Heavy presence of police checking identification…”. LaPierre didn’t site what kind of armed security he just said armed security. Where’s the outrage from the msm? Afterall why would we admit LaPierre is correct (note sarcasm). Hypocrites…

‘Gabby +co.’ should not be running around the countryside pontificating on gun control. Being shot does not make one an expert on gun control any more than being run over makes one eligible to decide who should drive a car. This is just using her celebrity to promote a cause; a cause about which she is clearly ignorant.

Make it illegal for any politician to campaign in public squares. Limit them to mass media. If politicians wouldn’t put themselves in these compromising positions, shootings wouldn’t occur.

It has nothing to do with making children or anybody else safer.If the Government has its way you will be their subjects and won’t be able to do anything without the permission of dictatorial leaders. Make no mistake people everything the Government does is about controlling every aspect of your life not making your life better or safer.The price for their benevolent behaviour is the loss of your liberty.

Stop trying to re legislate legal guns.

When you tell me you are getting the illegal guns off the street, maybe then I will advocate with you to get people to give up there guns. But you can’t and you won’t.

What you will do is make more laws to have honest law abiding citizens to disarm themselves.
