Gawker Publishes Complete 446-Page List of ‘All the A**holes Who Own Guns in New York City’
Editor’s note: This post contains some strong language that may be offensive to some readers.

The website Gawker has outdone New York’s “Journal News” and published the names of all licensed gun owners in New York City. With the provocative headline, “Here Is a List of All the A**holes Who Own Guns in New York City,” John Cook provides a 446-page list of every licensed gun owner in NYC, obtained two-and-a-half years ago via a Freedom of Information Act request.
“Below is a 446-page list of every licensed gun owner in New York City…Because the NYPD is more interested in raping and/or eating ladies and spying on Muslims than it is in honoring public records law, the list contains only the names, and not the addresses, of the licensees,” Cook writes.
(Scroll down for updates to this story)
The Journal News sparked outrage when it published the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland Counties. The paper wanted to also publish the information of gun owners in Putnam County, N.Y., but so far the county has refused, saying providing the information would put the public in danger.
As Cook correctly points out, section 400.00 of the Penal Law of New York, entitled “Licenses to carry, possess, repair and dispose of firearms,” makes addresses of licensed gun owners public information. “The name and address of any person to whom an application for any license has been granted shall be a public record,” the law states.
Critics argue, however, just because information is publicly available, that doesn’t mean it should be published online and in newspapers for criminals and others to see. In other states, like Texas, the personal information of concealed weapons license holders is considered confidential.
In his post, Cook also brags about outing Fox News chief Roger Ailes, Sean Hannity, Howard Stern, Don Imus, Donald Trump and others as gun owners with permits to own or carry firearms in the city in 2010.
Because New York pistol owners must register with their local police department and the state, the names of 1.2 million New York handgun owners and the addresses of 300,000 of them have been available online for more than two years. Because of this, gun owners in New York should not be upset about the Journal News or other outlets like Gawker publicizing their personal information, according to Cook.
“In any case, it’s clear that many of the Rockland County and Westchester County gun owners who are outraged at having their addresses plastered on the internet have had those addresses plastered on the internet for years without it causing a problem. And if anyone wanted to really stir some sh*t up, they’d grab those Who’s Packing databases and throw them up on Google Maps,” Cook writes.
While the names and addresses of gun owners are considered public information in New York, the media, even websites like Gawker, still have a responsibility to exercise smart editorial judgment and carefully consider the consequences of all of its decisions.
Ex-burglars and thieves recently told Fox News that a database of gun owners is like “gold” for criminals, letting them know which houses are easy targets and which ones have guns to steal. Frank Abignale, the famous former thief portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in “Catch Me if You Can,” called the Journal News’ decision to publish gun owners’ information “reprehensible.” Another ex-burglar said the newspaper was “exceptionally stupid” in its actions.
“And for the record,” Cook concluded. “[The gun owners] are not all a**holes. Some of them need guns for legitimate reasons for their jobs, like providing security for a**holes.”
TheBlaze is not providing the 446-page list of all New York City licensed gun owners.
–
UPDATE: Gawker quickly changed its headline, striking through the word “a**holes” and mockingly replacing it with “handsome law-abiding citizens.”
–
Update II: Gawker is now reporting death threats directed at the website over its decision to publish the names of all licensed gun owners in New York City.
About an hour-and-a-half after they published the story, someone apparently called Gawker’s headquarters and said “you’re f**kin dead.” Gawker reports it is “fair to assume this was related to the gun post.”
Another Gawker employee claims to have received a phone call after the story went live, telling her to “look both ways when you leave the building” and “all of you better look both ways because you’re going to get shot.” The same caller also reportedly said “every girl better have a boyfriend because you need someone to protect you.”
Gawker has contacted the police over the threats.
“These violent threats come as reaction to us publishing information that was already publicly available,” the website writes.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. I wouldn’t brag about being from the communist state of Illinois. The only state without a concealed carry law. A state that requires you to get a firearms owner identification card to own a gun and to purchase a gun and ammo. Not a very red state my friend. I can say this because I was born there and lived there many years. Follow my lead man and leave that place so you can experience freedom, what little there is left.

I was not bragging about living in Illinois. I said we have enough trouble here as it is and we don’t need more Democrats infesting my state. You say that Illinois isn’t very red, here is the election results for the Governor’s office county by county. http://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=17&year=2010&f=0&off=5 for some reason, they colored the Republican Party blue, but I imagine you get the image. Posted on January 9, 2013 at 8:46amWe all know that the government will do stuff like this, and much worse. That is unless they are stopped. But before that can happen people need to take a stand on the issue of gun control.
We have all heard enaogh of Pelosi, Reid, and Feinstein on this issue. Now it’s time for the people to have their say on the issue, we do not need less guns, we need more of them.
We need lees people like Pelosi, Reid, and Feinstein running this country. We need to clean out the lot of them and start over building a new group of people who care about the country.
I will keep my right to bare arms, and that does include the AR 15 assault rifle if I want one, I don’t own one at the moment, but I will defend the rights of those who do.
Because if we allow them to do this assault weapons ban the next thing will be a complete gutting of the 2ND amendment of this country.
For Obama this is about control of the people, and nothing else.

How many of the illegal gun owners are liberals?
How many of the shooters were liberals?
Who said it was not public realm in some liberal states? It should not be!!!
Who said we know it is but it should not be and is absolutely stupid to publish the names as it puts
people at risk in all positions! Owners and non owners
Guess what you ignorant jerk, I’m a dem, I own guns and I think you and everyone like you is stupid.

It’s the pastering of law abiding citizens’ information in an easy to access and at least relatively widely distributed list that has people up in arms. Honestly though, while it sucks for the gun owners in New York, I hope you wonderful lefties keep doing stunts like this. It’s one of the few areas where gun owners are enjoying wide spread sympathy, even by some left wing sources, and it’s doing far more damage to your cause than help. Creepy lists like this on private law abiding citizens just rub most Americans the wrong way.

I agree. I believe thoug, this can be easily handled by the 10th amendment from a legal standpoint. Nothing will ever pass Congress therefore pressure could be put on the individual States to come up with their own plan (if any). Then, people can vote with their feet. If they want to be a sheep in NY and rely on the great shepherds Bloomburg and Cuomo, then fine they can be sheep and move there. But if you prefer Kentucky who might well say ” We’ll let the people be their own shepherds. No Thanks”, then you can move there. Simple.

Lt_Scrounge
Posted on January 8, 2013 at 11:04pmYoursensai, that’s dependent on a number of factors.
1. The authorities determine who did it. The number of unsolved murders is quite high
2. The authorities can find the person who did it. Many murderers remain at large for decades
3. The authorities actually are able to get you into court. How many criminals are never brought to trial for lack of evidence?
4. The authorities actually are able to convince a jury that you are guilty. Again, they have to have the evidence to get a jury to convict you.
5. The authorities have to be able to get it done before this whole house of cards collapses and they end up stacked up like cord wood as well.
That’s a lot of BIG IFS that even minimal precautions will make the odds of being pulled off very long. It doesn’t take much. Due to threats from the FBI, I won’t tell you how to do it, but it would be very easy to do and very hard to prove.

Posted on January 9, 2013 at 8:46amSensei is trying to be smarmy and stylistic. Clearly he’s trying to impress somebody other than himself, and other than the person he condescends to. Keep in mind that his lunacy “death penalty” only applies in a society that is not torn apart by civil war. He’s counting on duplicity of mind.

Once the names of these gun owners were posted were not their children brought into the fray! Isn’t this what the current hysteria is about? The defenseless children in the school in Newtown? You post my name as a gun owner on a website you have now exposed my children to any quack that wants to retaliate for whatever reason against me and my family. It cuts both ways!

Posted on January 8, 2013 at 4:30pmKnow it or not you are part of the problem.Everyone but felons. The only felon who shouldn’t have a gun is one who is still serving their sentence or the crime involved the use of a gun,Even then execpt in serial offenses shoudl eventually be able to get the right back.Your support of the convicted felon rule is one reason we are currently going down a slippery slope.Remember everytime you advocate someone losing their rights its another step to everyone losing thier rights.Remember that if you give an inch they will take fifty miles.its been a step by step process.

This is a list of the people who LEGALLY own guns.
The list would be 5 times as long if it mentioned those who ILLEGALLY posess them.

They are playing with fire and putting so many lives at risk, the first time someone is endangered by these idiots actions, they need to be held criminally responsible.

One of these days, an event will occur, something that will cause the snowman and all other patriots to throw off the gloves. One tiny spark. Then, it will spread like wildfire. And no force on earth will be able to stop it. Good men and women will band together and it will be on.

Welfare recipients?
Abortion providers and their employees?
All felons?
Tax cheats?
Drug addicts?
Problem is, unfortunately, is there is no shame in the devious anymore. The left is corrupt and doesn’t apologize for that. Instead up is down and right is wrong. Law abiding citizens are being shamed. Rats used to scurry when the light came on, now they brazenly walk around, glorifying in their wickedness. How does a society rid itself of ugly, disease carrying, filthy rats, if society itself is joining the rats?

Posted on January 8, 2013 at 4:14pmYou know a few years ago I thought we were smart enough that this would not happen. I guess I was wrong, it sure looks like it could now. Best thing to do is relocate to a different State. One that supports the Constitution and the Rights of the people. That way when it does happen and I am beginning to think it will, you will at least be around people who believe as you do. Relocate now before it is too late. Looks like the battle lines be will drawn soon.
