‘Wilkow!’: A Liberal’s Case for the Second Amendment

The gun control debate has taken a prominent place in the national political discussion over the last month following a year that saw several incidents of deadly gun violence, which many Americans have argued could have been prevented. Some on the Right have cited worries that high emotions following the horrific massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, could lead to reactionary and ultimately ineffective policy from the president and Democrats in Congress. Early reports from the task force on gun violence set up by President Obama in the wake of Newtown indicate that the White House is looking at plans that could take on a new, broad agenda on gun control.

Looking at this issue from an unorthodox position is Craig Whitney, a longtime editor, reporter and foreign correspondent at The New York Times, who recently published “Living With Guns: A Liberal’s Case for the Second Amendment.” Whitney appeared on “Wilkow!” Monday to discuss gun control, gun rights, and bridging the gap between liberals and conservatives on this issue in order to create a safer society.

Just like “fair share”, who’s going to decide what constitutes “mentally ill”? Will PMS be considered a damning mental health issue? What part of “…shall not be infringed” don’t these people get?

It was refreshing to hear a self-professed Liberal who could speak intellingently about the 2nd Amendment, it’s too bad that Libs will not take the time to read his book. For them it’s a waste of time because their socialist utopian world is closed to facts or ideas that don’t fit in their fantasy vision of the world. Why do they not understand the Consitution is NOT negotiable (can only be modified by Amendment). The Bill of Rights are rights that are natural (i.e. God-given, not granted by Government). Our Founding Fathers were much wiser than the people today many of whom spend most of thier time texting or watching reality TV. I guess they just don’t teach history anymore in our Government schools …….

Can any one point out to me any room for any gun control laws being constitutional?
The only part that remotely applies is the part of the regulated militia.

      The 2nd Amendment:
      As passed by the Congress:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

      The Bill of rights:
Second Amendment – Militia (United States), Sovereign state, Right to keep and bear arms.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

      Militia:
The role of militia, also known as military service and duty, in the United States is complex and has transformed over time.[1] The term militia can be used to describe any number of groups within the United States. Primarily, these fall into:

The organized militia created by the Militia Act of 1903, which split from the 1792 Uniform Militia forces, and consist of State militia forces, notably the National Guard and the Naval Militia.[2] The National Guard however, is not to be confused with the National Guard of the United States, which is a federally recognized reserve military force, although the two are linked.

Constitution – Article II – The Executive Branch Section 2 – Clause 1:The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States…

      @Conservative2: Who are the militia?

According to USC, Title 10, Subtitle A, Part I, Chapter 13, Section 311 Militia: compostition and classes:

      (a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
      (b) The classes of the militia are—

      (1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
      (2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

There are one issue not being talked about right now concerning gun control. Gun Control by price gouging. In the few weeks after Sandy Hook tragaity prices have sky rocketed. Nt because it cost more but because of fear. Fear Obama will take away our rights to own whatever concerning guns. In three weeks 30 round AR magaines and othe high cap mags have went from $9.97 to $99.97 online and at gun shows. I saw used mags going for $60.00 at a gun show this weekend, and they are out of stock everywhere. Ammo has trippled in price and so have the guns that use them. Did they suddenly jump im cost to make. No, it’s price gouging plain and simple. Gun Control by price gouging. Has no one else noticed it.

It’s called supply and demand idiot–your gripe, in a hilarious twist of irony, is against heterodox economics, and it’s principle CAUSE is conspiratorial reactionaries (like you) who rush to buy all the guns and ammunition of the shelves they can get their hands on every time there’s a mass shooting for fear that the government might, gasp, actually DO something. But you needn’t worry on THAT front–remember this is America, and our politics are expressly DESIGNED not to work.

First the second amendment is to protect the citizenry from the tyranny of government, that in itself should be enough to end the discussion.
But is there any other common thread between all the mass murders?, psychiatric drug use, unlicensed to own firearms? ( guns were borrowed or stolen), mental health issues, video game use, or other things, it is obvious that firearms were not the only common thread in all of these killings, is there any reason that the congress and the president can’t look into the other commonalities?

The Democrats pushing this agenda KNOW that the pro gun argument is correct. Ever see how they completely ignore the facts presented, completely disregard the evidence presented? This is because it is NOT about gun control, it is about people control. We pro gun Americans repeat ourselves over and over again to no avail. It’s not about the facts, we have them. It’s not about the truth, we have that too. It’s about their ability to repeat their narrative in front of a camera and the dutiful regurgitation of their emotional BS on network TV. Three hours after Newtown, all the networks had the exact same list of gun cotrol demands, in concert, on queue. What is missing is our lack of understanding of the sham we are participating in. They are LIARS, the media will never call them on it, and truth and logic will not be enough for us to avoid this coming insult to our liberty and freedom. Morgan is a perfect example. All emotion, no thought process. He has slammed our proponents with his bs because we actually tried to argue facts with him.. Facts are irrelevant to him. The democrats have learned about taqiyya, to lie to our face because it is for our own good.
I personally believe we are close to checkmate. We are to blame for this. We forgot that participation in our governments process is not optional, and this is what we have to show for that lapse. Half the country has no clue what the Constitution is for.

Did we all forget about what the word Freedom means? When anyone tells you you can’t eat suger, salt, butter, drink cola, eat red meat or own a gun freedom dies. But you have to then accept what they tell you homosexuality, abortion, pedophilia (latest craze in Britian and coming to an extremist radical pervert Democrat near you soon) out right propertry theft at the hands of politicians or else and once again Freedom dies. In 1776 we had brilliant people that understood what Mao knew that the power is at the end of the barrel of a gun. Take it away and you take away the power of the people who then become enslaved to the whim of the radical extremist Democrat party and their lefty loon union thugs. The extremist Democrat Party does not believe in freedom for anyone and yes they believe in the one perdcent having the money as long as they are the one percent just look at the latest tax evasion dodge by Al Gore and you know what hypocrits they all really are.

The NRA needs to push for a repeal of the gun control act of 1968 and the abolishment of the ATF. Both are severe violations of the constitution. Time to take back all the inches we have given them over the years. The congress cannot infringe on our right to arms, they don’t have the right to register them, and they don’t have the right to limit them in anyway.

Don’t leave out the GOP. They are in cahoots. They just let the dems do everything and then cave in to them. It is their game plan so that it doesn’t matter who gets elected. The difference will be the speed at which things happen.

There is no gap bridging period so get over that one. A safer society is an armed society.
Liberal- I dont have a gun– oh my body guard does. So, thats not me. I play a hero killing people in the movies, thats not ok? These morons need to shut up and pledge to never appear in an action film with a gun. Lets see them first take that pledge.

Yeah, since you’re clearly an idiot I’ll explain what the difference that should be patently obvious to you–when you “shoot” someone with a gun in an action MOVIE, they get up at the end of the scene. When you shoot them with a gun in REAL LIFE, they suffer intense pain and possibly debilitating injury or death. There’s a word for people who don’t understand the difference between fantasy and reality–it’s called schizophrenia.
