A father in Columbus, Ohio was forced to defend himself and his 2-month-old son when a man pulled a gun and attempted to rob him on Monday night. Luckily, Kelby Smith, 34, owns a permit to carry a concealed handgun and was able to shoot the robber.
Smith told police that he was sitting in his brother’s driveway just before 9 p.m. when the armed robber approached him. The man held a gun to the father’s head while his 2-month-old son sat in a car carrier. Instinctively, the dad shielded the child from the robber’s gun.
Smith handed over all the money he had and the robber and took off on foot, but then reportedly pointed the gun back at the father and his baby, according WBNS-TV.
Smith then pulled out his legal handgun, for which he has a concealed carry permit, and fired at the suspect. While the robber still got away, a man fitting the description of the suspect arrived at Mount Carmel West Hospital with a gunshot wound shortly after the incident.
WBNS-TV has more:
Police later confirmed that Smith’s concealed weapons permit was valid and determined he used his firearm in self-defense. The man in the hospital will face charges if police determine he is the robbery suspect.
Smith and his child were not injured in the robbery.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 9:00pmEvan Marshall has done extensive research on shootings. “One shot stops” are assessed. The Left focuses on firearms being “killing machines” but the real value is fight stopping. The 125 gr 357 Mag is the best but all high performance 9mm, 40, 45 autos have better than 90% “one shot stops”, ending the gun fight. When FMJ ball ammo is discussed with the 9mm and 45… the 9mm just turns someone into swiss cheese, but with about 60% stops with the 45 being better…. fortunately private citizens can go with high performance ammo although New Jersey prohibits hollow point ammo… gee… how dumb. No matter what the caliber… it is real estate…. location, location. location that counts. With the newest performance ammo, the odds of stops is upped… such as the “Critical Defense” rounds from Hornady or other great ammo such as Corbon. Good Remington, Winchester and Speer ammo is very good also. Again…. shooting to protect is not killing to protect (unless several cops empty their mags into the same sad soul).

Jan. 9, 2013 at 8:54pmBefore we start debating caliber, center mass, et al, let’s remember that this guy had to hit a target moving away from him, in, at least partial darkness, while still trying to shield his 2 month old child. Good shot!!

Jan. 9, 2013 at 8:35pmColt Model 1911, .45 ACP. Combat proven in two World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. Special Forces are dumping their 9mm Beretta’s and going back to the weapon that stops them cold. That 1911 is the way to go.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 9:43pmThe 1911 is a fantastic weapon, I switched to HK Tactical years ago because of improved safety characteristics. Both are 100% accurate and reliable but the fire control system on the HK is more flexible. It also has duplex recoil spring and handles 45 Super with ease.
Core Bond 165grain@1250fps. I have a 6 inch barreled Elite that on a good day will do headshots@100 yds. with ease.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 7:11pmThe absolute last thing a cc holder wants to do is kill. But when the threat is life threatening we are trained to shoot to kill. This not a maniacal desre to kill. If the perp is not dropped and you are out of ammo you could end up killed. Also in todays legal world a wounded perp will sue for damages in civil court. Again shoot to kill is a last option.

I sure hope that all this ballistics controversy gets resolved real soon to everyone’s satisfaction because we can’t be too far away from encounters like the one described in this story becoming commonplace.

Just to let you know. If you have to use a gun you are attempting to kill. Wounding someone is great for a movie but is not very realistic. As I was instructed you pull a gun to kill. I was also told that an intruder in your house is better dead then wounded. That still alive intruder may come back and sue you later.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 6:53pmHere is a quote to ponder: ….and share!
“The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand arms, like laws, discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside … Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them.”

Jan. 9, 2013 at 6:18pmI caught a 230 grain .45 round in the midsection 40 years ago. It knocked fight out of me and a lot of the stuffings. Knowing what it is like, I never enjoyed shooting anybody, but many times they leave you no choice. You can see the change when someone is hit, they realize it was not worth it. A career felon used to average 160 felonies a year. If he puts a gun in someone’s face, it probably is not his first time. A bullet in the guts will reduce the # of victims. It has to be done by someone.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 6:08pmThe article claims the man and his son were unharmed in the robbery. This is false.
They lost whatever the robber stole from them.
I’m really tired of this wholesale lack of understanding that property is a representation of the legitimate owner’s life: it took time to earn that money (short of its being welfare or from another kind of theft). If you take $25 from me, you made me your slave for an hour (or two, or a half, depending on my wage). Slavery is wrong, it is a harm.
When I hear people say, “It’s just money,” I want to scream at ‘em. It’s not “just money”, or, at least, “just money” is far more important than they seem to believe.
And, for the kid who got shot in the rear end while stealing a bottle of vodka from a gin shop in Colorado, and who’s now suing the owner: tough on ya, ya dummy. You tired to take his life (or part of it), and you paid the price. Your life is not worth what his is. Even though I do not drink alcohol, he is performing a service for others, and you are nothing but a thief. You do not deserve to live off the sweat of others. (The same applies to any thief.)
Mr. O’bama, will there ever BE any Jobs?

Jan. 9, 2013 at 5:49pmRobber got free health care paid for by citizens. The prisoners in jail should be working for wages that go to funds to provide heath care to criminals. Will he get free disability too? I say free, because odds are he never paid a penny into the disability fund.
