High School Teacher Suspended After Allegedly Stomping on American Flag, Telling Students ‘It Doesn’t Mean Anything’
A South Carolina teacher has been suspended after he allegedly threw the American flag on the ground and stomped on it in front of his honors English class. He reportedly told students the flag was “only a piece of cloth” and didn’t “mean anything.”
At least one parent calls the actions of the Chapin High School English teacher disrespectful and unpatriotic, WIS-TV reports. Officials at Chapin High School, located in Chapin, S.C. hope to have a permanent replacement for the teacher for the remainder of the year while an investigation is carried out.
One parent, Michael Copleand, says he heard his teenager talking about what her English teacher did with the American flag in the classroom and pressed to get the whole story.
“He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was a cross, and he said, ‘What does this represent,’ and everybody said, ‘Christianity,’” Copeland told WIS-TV.
“Then he proceeds to take down the American flag, and said, ‘This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything,’ and then he throws it down on the floor and then stomps on it, repeatedly,” he added. “I asked what was he trying to get, the point across? And she said, ‘I don’t know,’ and he said, his explanation was there would be no consequences, it’s just a piece of cloth that doesn’t mean anything.”
But there were consequences.
wistv.com – Columbia, South Carolina |
Mark Bounds, A spokesman for the Lexington-Richland 5 school district, a military veteran, was unhappy with the teacher’s disrespectful display.
“Our superintendent served in the military, I served in the military for 20 years, our flag is a symbol of our freedom, and so many people have fought and died for that liberty, and so we take this action very seriously,” he said.
He continued: “There is a code of ethics for teachers that talks about professional conduct, and then we tell our teachers that their personal opinion is their personal opinion and shouldn’t be brought into the classroom, and so we caution them all the time,” said Bounds.
The lesson on the flag was repeated in three classes that day. School officials have reportedly launched a full investigation into the incident.
What do you think, is the American flag more than a “piece of cloth?”

Posted on January 9, 2013 at 6:11pmThis is liberalism, the disease, featuring contempt and hatred for anything moral, respectful, traditional, or American. The disease has infected our schools, courts, and our elected representatives. I remember a time when people stood up for the flag, freedom, liberty and the red, white and blue symbols for duty, honor and country. Now there is a television show featuring an unwed father of nine or ten children, by nine or ten women, and he is somehow the new American hero to be looked up to and admired. We are in a cultural and economic death spiral and we are allowing 535 members of the House and Senate and one very scary President to take us over the cliff. Oh yeah, have you folks who voted for Obama noticed your paychecks decreased? Told ya! LEAN FORWARD, and brace yourself… it is only the beginning.

I have had a dream that we got an influx or invasion of conservative/right wing Americans that would place the vote here for an improved and better Australia. Our lefties could leave and with enough right wingers we could build dams, nuclear power or coal fired plants (new), irrigate the desert, encourage farmers and become self sufficient once again. All left wingers are welcome to leave and a new selection procedure to be put in place for teachers as well as company CEO’s and representatives in parliament. Well that’s one dream I have anyway.

The quote that I think is apropos is:
” A man getting rattled because his religionโs book is burned shows he is weak, peccable, and has a poor foundation because he cannot tolerate dissent. And this really is the issue, that dissent must not be allowed.”
Freedom of speech means two things, I am allowed to express my ideas, and also that I must tolerate your expression of idea – without fear of physical or legal recourse.
I think this man is seriously misguided, but I can use my intellect and reason to counter his ignorance.
The only thing to do is to show the children why we should respect the flag; bring in a veteran or two to talk about their experiences and sacrifices. Then let the kids make up their own minds.
I learned to respect the flag, it didn’t come naturally. Others can learn, also.

A flag is a “stand in” for the American people & what we value. To desecrate the flag is to speak ill or have ill will toward the American people.
In a political sense a flag is to the American people what a variable is in an equation.
If said teacher thinks so little of the American people the American polity, he should find a better one & move.

This alleged business is going way too far. If I shot you in the face with a squirt gun (I’d never use a real gun) and there were three people who saw me do it, that would certainly not make me an alleged shooter. It should definitely prove beyond a doubt that I did indeed squirt you in the face with my squirt gun.

Posted on January 9, 2013 at 7:05pmlordjosh, I have two flags, in cases. One was given to my husband as he retired from the Navy aboard the USS Isenhower, it had flown over that great ship that day, and had my husband’s
acheivments in the case also. The other flag covered his coffin, and he was a true patriot. When you are handed a flag like that, it is more than just your country’s symbol, it is the symbol of a life lived in service to keep all of us free and is filled with love he felt for America. It was cold that day in Dixon, Calif, I hung on to that flag and remembered his pride and love for a country that is less and less than what he would have considered acceptable. Do not try to tell me it means nothing.
