The National Climatic Data Center’s head of climate monitoring Deke Arndt called the record highs in 2012 ”off the charts.” The Associated Press reported him saying that 2012 is ”a huge exclamation point at the end of a couple decades of warming,” which is attributable, according to the report, to both man-made climate change and natural variation.
Scientists say even with global warming, natural and local weather changes mean that temperatures will go up and down over the years. But overall, according to what’s being released, temperatures are climbing. In the United States, the temperature trend has gone up 1.3 degrees over the last century, according to NOAA data. The last year the U.S. was cooler than the 20th-century average was 1997.

“These records do not occur like this in an unchanging climate,” said Kevin Trenberth, head of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. “And they are costing many billions of dollars.”

This map shows state rankings by average temperature. (Image: NOAA/NCDC)
What would so-called climate skeptics have to say about these records?
One of them, Steven Goddard who maintains the blog “Real Science,” wrote that NOAA “inflated the 2012 record maximum number,” which was reported to be 3.2 degrees warmer than the average for the entire 20th century. How did they allegedly inflate this? “By adding new stations which didn’t exist during the hot years of the 1930s,” Goddard wrote.
“An apples to apples comparison uses only the same stations,” he continued. ”When that is done, 2012 doesn’t even crack the ten hottest years.”
Meteorologist Joe Bastardi (via Climate Depot) echoed these sentiments on Twitter the week before the numbers were formally released.

Read more about NOAA’s 2012 State of the Climate here. Watch CBS’ report about the U.S.’s high average 2012 temperature:
Although the final numbers for global temperatures for 2012 from NOAA won’t be released until next week, according to the data, in the first 11 months of 2012, the world was on pace to have its eighth warmest year on record.
In the mean time, in other world global temperature news, on Tuesday the U.K.’s MET office scaled back forecasts for how much it predicted the world would warm by 2017. According to the BBC, it had previously predicted a rise in temperature by 0.54 C but a new computer model set it at 0.43 C. BBC noted the MET Office saying that the work is experimental though that that it will stand by the predictions it has made for the longer term.
If the newest computer model is correct, this means the average global temperature was static for about the last two decades, according to BBC. Here’s the MET’s response to this:
A Met Office spokesman said “this definitely doesn’t mean any cooling – there’s still a long-term trend of warming compared to the 50s, 60s or 70s.
“Our forecast is still for temperatures that will be close to the record levels of the past few years.
“And because the natural variability is based on cycles, those factors are bound to change the other way at some point.”
Still, there are some who believe the difference shown in this computer model could cause questioning of the accuracy of other models. According to the Daily Mail, Dr. David Whitehouse with the Global Warming Policy Foundation said that with no statistically significant change in global temperatures since 1998 would “pose fundamental problems for climate models.”
“If the latest Met Office prediction is correct, then it will prove to be a lesson in humility,” Whitehouse said, according to the Daily Mail.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 4:11pmI am no climate scientist, but how exactly does adding more stations make the temperature measurements warmer. I would think that an increase number of stations simply improves the accuracy of the measurements in which case there would be a 50/50 chance that the temperature measurements would actually decrease.
The climate sceptics are quickly running out of credible arguments and are clearly grasping at straws here.
In any case any real climate scientist will tell you that climate does not equal weather, so despite 2012 being a record year, that in and of itself is no indication of climate change. There are numerous other indicators out there that climate change is happening, but that’s a discussion for another day.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 4:19pm“An apples to apples comparison uses only the same stations,” he continued. ”When that is done, 2012 doesn’t even crack the ten hottest years.” But of course a real scientific mind would ask the question in both directions. Perhaps the stations utilized in 1930 understated the temperature in that it did not provide a comprehensive profile.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 4:31pmC_G ….. Whether the accuracy is improved or the numbers are weighted in a colder or hotter bias, depends on the locations selected for the additional stations.

So you’re suggesting the government knew in advance with locations would get hotter and over a period of 80 years placed additional stations at those locations in order to make it appear that the climate is getting hotter.
Let me guess, they did this because they hate freedom and want to bring about socialism, and since communism as a political movement is essentially kaput, climate change is the new means by which the socialists can implement their ideology.

What they have done is placed station in areas that will be hotter like near AC vents, Roads Hot tard roofs. I have seen many of them near places where acourse they would be higher thust playing with the real numbers,
Also seen a satellite picture of Antarctica showing how much of the ice self has melted but didn’t mention that the picture comparisons were in two differ times of the year. Feb where there would be less ice because it is warmer during the winter times in teh NH. The other was during Augest I believe showing with more ice shelf’s
Also scientist been talking about yeah Glaciers are melting but in other parts of the world they are growing.
It is abotu control of our industries and put so much regs on them that if funds and obese government or they sell out and the government comes and fills in the place which makes the government more obese.

Jan. 11, 2013 at 1:44amIf you add reporting stations in high density areas, like down town LA or NYC where there is more concrete and asphalt, those temps will read higher. That is where the raising temps come from, more buildings and streets that absorb the heat from the sun.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 4:05pmHere in California, some of those “monitors” were found to have been placed “near” hot air vents / exhausts.
I worked outdoors for the better part of my career. My worst time here in So. Calif. was in the mid to late 80′s – it was just freaking hot!!!!
My best years have been within the LAST decade before I retired – summers were overall cooler (ie – the hot spells didn’t last as long and/or there weren’t as many).
I call BS on Deke Arndt and the NCDC, based on personal experience in one of the warmer States of our Nation.

Jan. 9, 2013 at 3:56pmI can only imagine how much money I’m saving in heating costs with it being warmer. I’m going to need that extra money to pay for the extra taxes we all have to pay come April 15th, unless your on the government dole; in that case Uncle Sam in paying for your heat. Wow! it’s getting hot in here.

Oh, that’s right, they don’t need data from thermometers. They think they can determine the average global temperature using core samples of ice. LOL
They don’t know how old the ice is because well ice melts and also “evaporates” (its called sublimation). So if they have no idea how old the ice is then how do they know when the earth was warmer or cooler?
All this to the third or fourth decimal place? yeah right

Jan. 10, 2013 at 6:36amFunny thing is, warming the earth a few degrees would actually help out humanity, it would make the growing seasons longer and we’d be able to farm more food.
Also, there was a tribe long before Europeans came that thrived in a period of Global warming and was wiped out when it ended because the growing seasons went kaput on them. Mississippians I believe they where.
