New Poll: More Americans Identify With Democrats Than Republicans

In another sign of flagging fortunes for Republicans at the national level, the polling company Gallup recently found that the relative position of the two parties has shifted from essentially even to now favoring Democrats, when it comes to the number of Americans who identify with each party.

The poll, released today, shows that 47 percent of Americans identify with or lean toward the Democrats, with only 42 percent saying the same of Republicans. The advantage to the Democrats is slightly lessened when leaners are removed (31 percent identify as Democrats, with 28 saying the same of Republicans). However, the thin numerical advantage Democrats enjoy among independents is likely to cause more concern for worry. From Gallup’s press release:

Americans last year continued their trend toward greater political independence. The 40% who initially identified as political independents matched the record high from 2011. That is particularly notable, given that the usual pattern is for the percentage of Americans identifying as independents to decline in a presidential election year. In each of the last four presidential election years, dating back to 1996, the percentage of independents was lower than in the year prior to the election.

The increase in political independence has led to a reduction in Democratic and Republican identifiers, with the percentage of core Democrats and Republicans currently in the lower range for the past 25 years. In fact, 2012 marked the sixth consecutive year that less than 30% of Americans identified as Republicans. This includes 2010, when Republicans made huge gains in the midterm congressional elections.

The year 2012 saw President Obama re-elected to office and saw Democrats regain an advantage in party affiliation among the American public. But that bit of good news for the Democrats is tempered by the fact that a record number of Americans continue to claim political independence, at least when initially asked to say which party they support.

And here is Gallup’s trendline over the past 20 or so years for this metric:

Gallup: More Americans Support Democrats Than Republicans

The fact that Gallup has found this result is arguably even more cause for concern among national Republican partisans. This past election, Gallup was the pollster most friendly to Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and showed him holding leads with the national electorate through election day. Given this fact, it could be argued that Gallup’s methodology understates the size of the disparity.

The one bright side to the report is that while Democrats enjoy an advantage among those who do identify with either party, a sizable number of Americans are still up for grabs, with 11 percent of Americans counting as pure Independents. These numbers also need not necessarily translate into a weak GOP, as the last time such numbers were recorded was in the run up to the 2001 election, when Republicans (narrowly) won the White House.

This article states that there are more brain dead sheep in one mafia over the other.
the only thing that the two parties can agree on is taking away more of our freedoms & liberties in the form of the patriot act, NDAA , SR347 & the police state we live in.
we are all tax slaves & it was done deliberatly.
you clueless sheep better wake up soon because DHS did not purchase 1.6 billion rounds of hallow point bullets & set up a school shooting for nothing…the same things happened in Germany we are no exception…look for dollar to collapse & WW3 to happen this year…

The expansion of the “gimmedat” party is inevitable in the wake of massive government expansion. Two elements of human nature guarantee it. The people voting themselves greater access to the public trough and those opposed resigning to the reality that, being in the minority, there is little that we can do about it.While I have come to face that reality, I still stay connected with current events. My final act of rebellion against a government that seeks total control over me will be my adamant refusal to relinquish my second amendment rights. Better dead then red.

No BOTTOM_DWELLER..what it means is you’re a dullard.
For some perspective, try to remember that Gallup and Rasmussen had Romney beating or level with Obama right up until election day. As a liberal troll, you’re quite unteachable and a rigid ideologue.
What these numbers are reflecting is the success of the media’s campaign against the GOP house over the “fiscal cliff” debacle we just witnessed. That’s all.

It’s the numbers behind the numbers that you should be looking at. These kinds of polls are meaningless, 6 months from now these same Democrat leaners will be leaning Republican if the national conversation changes. These are the “much coveted”…”independents” that everyone tries to pander to. The unprincipled, uninformed voter in other words…you should know…your liberal machinery keeps them in perpetual darkness.

No what the article states is that people want less government intrusion in their lives.

The freedom of choice, freedom to marry who you want, and the freedom to put substances in your body to alter your mood. All things that the statist republicans fight tooth and nail against. Republicans claim to want government to stay out of their lives, but what they really mean is to stay out of their wallet. They are fine when the government controls a woman’s body, a man’s heart, or a young adult’s creativity, but touch their wallet and ooooh boy watch out. Very altruistic of you republicans. I’m not saying the democrats are perfect either. They do plenty that I do not agree with, but if you truly want the government out of people’s lives, a great place to start is a woman’s ******.

Most American’s are waking up to realize what harm the teabillies have done to this country over the past 2 years. Hell, now only 8% of republicans identify as tea party. They were a failed experiment that cost this country it’s AAA credit rating (and consequently raised our interest to debt payments).

The funny thing is though, as more and more people leave the republican party, the tea party will get what they want. A cleansed and purified party that holds to ideology instead of common sense. The sad thing is they do not realize that this will forever cement their party into the minority. Hell, even true libertarians like myself look down on the tea party.

Get 3rd world folks in here to get freebies and they’ll keep voting for Dems. The Democrats (commies) sold out this country for votes.

There are so many people now who are Independent or not affiliated with any party. Give us something to sink our teeth into wouldja? This is crap! Only republicans would confuse the social security witholdings from the federal tax withholdings. It’s funny though. For the past 4 years everyone on the right has said Obama raised your taxes, when in reality he cut them by 2% (under the payroll social security tax). Now that this tax expired (because the republicans took it off the table), they are complaining that their taxes went up. Guess what. That tax only existed in the first place because it was part of Obama’s stimulus bill.

If democrats had won the house of representatives, this tax cut would still be in place, but seeing as it only benefits the poor and middle class (ss taxes are only collected up to 113k of income) and not the rich, the cut went bye bye.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court made it clear that the individual mandate of Obamacare MUST be deemed a tax in order for it it to be constitutional. Obama has in fact raised taxes on every tax payer in the country.

This is the radical Left’s latest attempt at the ” use the system ( the media ) to “change ” ( wink, wink ) the system. 8. Are you a family member of someone in Congress?
      9. Do you lobby for Washington, D.C.?
      10. Are you employed by Hollywood?
      11. Do you work at or support Planned Parenthood?
      12. Are you a Government Cheat working under the table and getting welfare?
      13. Do you work for GM? or Al Jazeera?
      14. Are you a card carrying member of the Communist Party?
      15. Are you a Kennedy?
      16. Are you an employee of the Tides Foundaton? (ACORN and affiliates)
      17. Do you live in Detroit, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, Las Vegas, D.C. or Chicago?

Then when the people interviewed have answered all these questions tally their answers up. Then tell us who the Democrats are and the Republicans. I betcha the moochers will all be Democrats.

Folks, it’s not the party, it’s the people. Between Post CIvil War Reconstruction/Pre Civil Rights the people of the Democrats are not the same as the Democrats today. As well as the Republicans. Post 1960s there were a major switch by the people i.e Reagan, whom was a DIXIECRAT turned Republican followed by the Southern Slavers descendants that high jacked the G.O.P and Christianity that exercised political “code words” against their opposition.
The Major core of the G.O.P today are Southern rural Whites whom were Dixicratesque 2 generations ago. The labels may stay the same but it’s the people behind the label that drives the engine.
It will always be rural vs. urban. Agrifarm vs. Manufacturing. Industry vs. mom and pop. Trailer parks vs. the projects. CMT vs. BET. Trick my Truck vs. Pimp my Ride. hip originality vs. posers and copy cats. Nascar vs. MMA. Landowners vs Bankers. Saying and blaming the Democrats for past mishaps can only be matched with the same characteristics of those that are presently in the G.O.P Same types, different stripes.

    Telephone ‘Service’

    Cable TV ‘Service’

    Civil ‘Service’

Federal, State, City, & public ‘Service’

    Customer ‘Service’

I thought that “Service” meant a voluntary giving of oneself for the good of others.

Then I I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to ‘Service’ a few cows. BAM!!! It all came into focus. Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us.

At some point, the balance will swing back in the other direction, or they will run out of money as the more sane and sensible leave town! Just look at Detroit if you want a glimpse of how it might be! This Candy Store mentality will take a generation or two to scrub out of our system! Democrats demonize the rich, but the national level Democrats tend to be …RICH!
I bet Al Gore will be more popular in 5 years form now than Romney after his backstab is forgotten.

They forgave Clinton for assaulting women (Juanita Broederick or former Miss America Elizabeth Ward Gracen). But it is all good progs Elizabeth was made to recant & video tech was not advanced enough for Juanita to capture the brutish love taps of Clinton. So Al Gore will be forgiven & his popularity will be near 50% in the future.

“When former Vice President Al Gore ran for president more than 12 years ago, he had less than $2 million in assets to his name. ”

“Taking into account taxes to be paid on the deal, possible earlier debt and the fact that Gore’s representatives declined to comment, FORBES conservatively estimates the former vice president’s net worth to be at least $300 million, making him wealthier than unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.”

This doesn’t really mean anything. I don’t identify as Republican, I don’t identify as Democrat. I don’t identify as anything other than myself. Independents and unaffiliateds sway every election, except probably the last one when more than half the country stayed home…something I’ll probably do next time until we get a decent choice.

The muddled-middle is solicited by the political prostitutes on the right and the left of the Ruling Class. You are welcome to the government that YOU deserve.

Exactly! They never tell us the criteria of the polling and how they arrived at these answers they just throw out these stupid percentage points over and over. Blah. Blah. yawn.

This actually doesn’t surprise me, given the character assassination tactics that have been used by the Democrats for many years now! In the Democratic politic, there are more lies than truth, thus a survey such as this is only significant in that it verifies the sourdid success of their program! The Republicans need to figure out a way to neuter the beast without stooping to their level of disinformation!

      Exactly.

The Democrats are coming off a win, using OWS as character assassination, etc.

Some people are so ill informed or so fickle that they will believe the demonization of Romney & hate him. they will give lip service to how bad Al Gore & Clinton are & then blithely skip low the low road because it is easy & vote Democrat.

“Business Is Good: Al Gore Set to Surpass Romney’s Net Worth With Current TV Deal”

Al Gore’s sale of CurrentTV according to Forbes magazine looks like it will put many liberals out of business (shedding no tears). It is betraying everything that he said he stood for. He is putting many people who believe in global warming etc out ion the street. But he is more popular than a generic conservative, the Republican party, Bush, Congress or the Pope.

      That about says it all.

Republicans need to dump the progressive shills that run the place. But, they won’t, as evidence of Jon Boehner’s continued speakership. The republican party is dead.

Even if the numbers are off I’m glad to see the rep. party seem to be in trouble. I used to be reg. rep. but changed to Constitution Party. The repugnants deserve no loyalty. It is no longer a party that stands for limited govt., and hasn’t been for at least 12 yrs.

Maybe they will go the way of the Whigs. The majority of Americans are actually Tea Partiers but they don’t realize it because the party of treason has successfully mischaracterized the Patriots.

    New Poll:

More Americans need another poll to tell us what we already know.

Thank you, Sir, may I have another.

Yep, because we have realized that the GOP is only the right-wing of the progressive American Ruling Class.

See Angelo Codevilla’s July 2010 TAS essay, ‘America’s Ruling Class — And The Perils of Revolution’

The Constitution Party is the only principled representative of America’s conservative Country Class.

16 trillion in debt and a police state,I think we can thank our one party system for the state of modern day Amerika. It took the ‘R’s and ‘D’s to get us here and there isn’t any difference between the two.

Yeah! What a total police state. It’s like I can’t even choose what I want to eat or what to watch on TV or what I can say on my blog or in public! I mean all these rules! These imaginary rules that conservatives keep spouting!

Thank ‘god’ we have people like you, who want to protect us from all the imaginary rules.

On second thought, no thanks. I actually LIKE communism and socialism. That’s what I vote for and that’s what I’ll continue to vote for, along with the increasingly majority of American people :)

When Obama gives amnesty and a path to citizenship for all ‘illegal’ immigrants we’ll have the Presidential elections locked up for the next 40 years.

Nice to be on the winning side. Gloating over racists and homophobes and those who would rather see poor people die than give a helping hand…well, it just warms my heart to no end :) :) :)
