While bemoaning the fact that former Detroit Tigers superstar Jack Morris got passed over again for Baseball Hall of Fame, Fox MLB reporter Ken Rosenthal took a shot at both the sabermetrics community and the Tea Party.
But first, for those of you who have no idea what sabermetrics is, here’s a succinct definition: It’s the “organized study of baseball statistics to give objective, empirical evidence in measurement of in-game activity.”
In short, sabermetrics ignores such things as size and build and instead focuses entirely on players’ statistics. In the early 2000’s, for example, the Oakland Athletics made a name for themselves by discarding the old way of recruiting players (i.e. looking at strength, speed, etc.) and instead recruited players based on actual performance (specifically their on-base percentages). In fact, it was the focus of the movie “Moneyball.”
“Moneyball” by Michael Lewis is all about Oakland’s experiment
with sabermetrics. It was later made it into a movie.
The Athletics won games. Lots of them.
Anyway, that’s what the sabermetrics community does. They crunch data and, apparently, they’re not too keen on Morris.
“The level of discourse against [Morris] by certain segments of the sabermetric community right now is over the top,” said Rosenthal. “It’s almost a crusade and it’s ridiculous.”
“At times, not among many of us, but some of us, is the almost polarized view of the world now that has come to pass. It’s as if the Tea Party is taking over one part of baseball discussion and that’s not right.”
Final Thought: While you try to figure out how a community based on statistics and spreadsheets has become “polarized,” enjoy this “Moneyball” trailer. If you haven’t seen it already, you really should:

Jan. 11, 2013 at 12:21amI liked Morris, and yeah, he should get consideration, however….I’m not so sure he belongs in the HoF. His situation kind of reminds me of Hines Ward’s. Cult hero among the fans, but stats tend to matter as well, even though the play on the field spoke volumes about the player in the clutch. Both of these guys were clutch for a long time with good results. But again, stats matter.

If you have to debate it, they shouldn’t be in. As a matter of fact, it’s time clear some of those folks out and put them into the Hall of Very Good or the Hall of Popularity.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 1:57pmYou know,….the more the public realizes how liberal and leftist most reporters and leagues are in pro-sports,….the less of their crap people will pay to watch. I can get the same excitement from a college or a high school game as I can from pro-ballgames. Pro-Football games in particular are getting really expensive to attend in some cities…..and the same goes for the rest of the sports. You are paying to see a bunch of lib millionaires play a game. How sick is that? Screw them.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 1:07pmCal Ripkin’s brother once stated that sports reporters were the scrawny little trolls that wore black socks to gym class and now they are the experts on sports. Jack Morris reminds me a lot of John Lowenstein. They had a certain disdain for the media. They believed them to be more foolish than anything. They loved the game but believed in its purity. Just play. Don’t comment. Jack finished his career in Cleveland in 94′(stike season). He went on to live in semi-seclusion.

( Heard about the “new” bank loan regulations ?! What a farce . All caused because of the economic disaster caused by the Democrat ( Played the Discrimination Card ) Affordable Housing Act. Oh, our radicals have long planned the mess we are now living through…BUT they were able to get more federal control of the banks and corporations, were’t they ?? Clever destructive radicals…

Jan. 10, 2013 at 12:17pmA normally GOP friendly Rasmussen poll released on Monday found tea party support at an all time low.
Only eight percent (8%) now say they are members of the Tea Party, down from a high of 24% in April 2010 just after passage of the national health care law. Only 30% of Likely U.S. Voters now have a favorable opinion of the Tea Party. Half (49%) of voters have an unfavorable view of the movement. Twenty-one percent (21%) are undecided.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 12:36pmIf that were true it would be acceptable. But the Tea Party was represented by individuals such as Christine O’donnell, Sharon Angle and similar moronic politicians. So stand for freedom and liberty for all US citizens to pursue their dreams and exercise of their civil rights as they begin at the tip of their nose, where yours end. Stand for all parts of the constitution including the Supreme Court decisions such as Roe v. Wade that decided as constitutional. And yes stand for the diversity of the United States which is the bedrock of why it is the greatest country on earth. If you want to stand for something that will really make a difference, stand for citizenship in terms of support and service to one’s community, state and country. The US was the greatest country when citizenship was more important than individual ideology, individual beliefs and individual possessions. And by the way all citizens of South American countries, Central American countries and Canada are also Americans.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 1:01pmIn other words jrook, the tea-party was hy-jacked. When the movement was in its infancy Tucker Carlson said that, “If the tea-party sticks with one plank, fiscal responsibility, it will be a huge success.” The dems and the media did a great job associating the movement with crazy small % fanaticals. The GOP couldn’t take the work done by the tea-party in 2010 and convert it to a “big tent” policy. In fact the election was never focused on the economy and that’s why Romney lost. Now that RGIII has been outed as a republican, his support in the media will wane.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 1:10pmThe comparison actually makes sense, although in a way that I’m not sure the reporter intended. Sabermetrics evaluates players based on their statistics through reason and logic thought. While the old school baseball scouts/GM/reporters based their evaluations on look and feelings. Much like conservatives, the sabermetrics community, their thought process revolves around logic while liberals and this reporter’s thought process revolves around emotion.

Jan. 10, 2013 at 12:08pmthey hypocrisy of sports writers… while tearing through adjectives about the more and more majestic homers… while arrogantly criticizing the speed of the game and the low scores, sports writers contributed in the 80′s to the atmosphere that encouraged steroid use.
and now, without proof of use by some, the same sportswriters who have made their careers on the backs of athletes, snub the very players that let the writers entertain their readers. we are through the looking glass, folks… musicians use beta blockers to overcome stage fright. fighter pilots use amphetamine analogues to improve reaction time… and athletes use steroid and other supplements to maximize their productivity.
the Lance Armstrong ‘sufficient heresay evidence to strip his medals’ attitude is unjust and unAmerican, but it is hardly the only injustice being visited upon professional athletes… a host of professional ballplayers deserve to be in the hall… put them in with an asterisk if you choose. put in a display that demonstrates Barry Bonds’ armor let him get greater leverage on his swing and stand closer to the plate, and likely contributed as much as the steroids to his record total. put in displays that show what happens with steroid use over time… what the athletes were willing to trade away for their time in the majors.
but stop the hypocrisy. and stop trying to demonize either athletes, their fans, or the tea party… doing so only shows the ignorance is the sportswrite
