Donald Trump to Bill Maher: Cough Up the $5 Million You Owe Me or I’ll Sue You

NEW YORK, NY – JANUARY 09: Donald Trump Credit: Getty Images
Donald Trump wants the $5 million that HBO host Bill Maher promised to pay him if he could prove he was not the “spawn” of his mother having sexual relations with an orangutan. And if Maher doesn’t pay up, Trump said he will “probably sue him.”
Earlier this week Maher jokingly made the $5 million offer on “The Tonight Show,” saying he would give the money to a charity of Trump’s choice if he could prove he did not come from an orangutan. It was a knock on Trump’s previous offer to President Obama, in which he offered the president $5 million to a charity of his choice if he released his college and passport records.
And one day later, Trump released his birth certificate and called on Maher to honor the offer. The fact that Maher was obviously joking doesn’t seem to matter to the real estate tycoon.
“He made an absolute offer, I made an absolute acceptance. I sent him documentation and he owes me $5 million, which I’m going to give to charity. Let’s see what happens, and if he doesn’t pay the money we will probably sue him.” Trump told Extra’s A.J. Calloway.
“You are going to sue him?” Calloway asked.
“I think so. I mean, he made an offer, we accepted the offer. I’d probably sue him,” Trump replied.

During Thursday’s “Kelly’s Court” segment on Fox News, a legal panel debated whether Maher is legally obligated to pay Trump. Watch the segment below:

Uh, yeah. Meritocracy is a “political philosophy that says power should be vested in individuals according to merit”…
where have i heard some thing like that before?
Oh, yeah- Karl Marx..
“From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs” sounds very Meritocratic to me.
Who ever said Capitalism is Merit-based? A teacher’s union? Firefighters?

No, that’s what the MARKET economy is all about–capitalism is a completely independent system (conservative misunderstandings/misinformation on the subject notwithstanding) defined by the private absentee ownership of the capital goods of a society. It is the conferring of property rights, most saliently the right to extract rents, over the means of a society’s economic production to a private class of people (capitalists) who may, or may not, be members of that society. That is capitalism–no more, and no less. Everything else is merely a consequence thereof, or an independent coinciding feature of the particular capitalist economy (for example, an economy need not be a strongly market-based economy in order to be capitalist–just look at China).

your breaking the definition of capitalism down to proletarians.
i was referring to entrepreneurs.
In the case of the Chinese government, they have virtually monopolized themselves as the only legal entrepreneurs.
As far as the proletarians go, we have the edge on equity over the Chinese by miles.
Why is it so many Chinese flee to the U.S. in search of simple proletariat status?
Why do no Americans flee to China to be their peons?
Our system has regrettably become more feudal than it once was but Capitalism is, and will always be (as you so astutely point out) necessary- regardless of the political system.
That’s because it’s essential for motivating the proletariat class.
The only other way to motivate labor is force.
People don’t ever work for the common good.

Different laws govern contracts for the sale of goods than do services.
@PS
There’s never been any such thing as “unfettered capitalism”–capitalism has NEVER, and will never, exist in a vacuum. It has ALWAYS existed in social and political context, and it had the help of the law and the government, which it relies upon to continue to function to this day, at its inception. If there wasn’t a legal regime, courts, and the coercive power of government to uphold contracts and ensure stockholders were paid the dividends and/or share price of the stock they owned, then capitalists could not exist as a socioeconomic class and there would BE no “capitalism.” Capitalism has therefore ALWAYS been crony capitalism, since its operation has not fundamentally changed but has ALWAYS been comprised of rewarding wealth for wealth’s sake, rather than labor value, and the manner in which it accomplishes this, the abstract absentee titular ownership of a society’s capital goods from which capitalists extract rents, has not changed terribly significantly either. And THAT is not, and never was, meritocratic–it has thus ALWAYS been parasitic “cronyism,” and they only difference between then and now, is that since capitalism has NOW served most of its primary social value at its inception of industrializing, it’s marginal utility has diminished and it is quickly becoming apparent that its socioeconomic COSTS will not be outweighed by its BENEFITS for much longer.

Good evening.
He proceeds by letting his ABA factotums fight it out with Mahers team.
First they will try to settle the matter through non-judicial accord and satisfaction (out of court settlement).
If the two sides can not agree, it will go to court to see if it bears merit and has standing for a case.
If the Plaintiff can prove standing, then this boils down to who can make the best case.
You can see two ABA “Experts” disagree in this video.
I would venture to say that Trump’s lawyers are a little bit “slicker” than Maher’s.
Trump’s team has the evidence (Video, BC).
This is also contingent upon whether the defense can convince the jury that this was “Without a Doubt”, a Joke. I sensed some seriousness to the offer, and so did Trump.
This could go either way. As previously stated herewithin, I would love to see Maher pay.

He made an offer and Trump called him out on it. The president could have just sent a couple pieces of paper to give $5 million dollars to starving, sick, children, but Obama could care less about these children.
